ALICE IN CHAINS Signs With VIRGIN/EMI - Apr. 25, 2009
Steve Appleford of Los Angeles Times reports that ALICE IN CHAINS' as-yet-untitled new album will be released mid-September via Virgin/EMI.

The band began work on the CD last October at FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl's private Studio 606 in Northridge, before moving to Hollywood's Henson Recording Studios in December. "We've been working toward this for over a year now," says guitarist Jerry Cantrell. "It's a long haul."

Among the visitors to their recording sessions was late AIC singer Layne Staley's mother, who, along with other family members, has expressed ongoing support for the band. "It was really important that it was OK with them," says manager Susan Silver, who first began representing ALICE IN CHAINS 21 years ago and now co-manages the resurrected band with David Benveniste and his Velvet Hammer firm. "There were a lot of baby steps. The first year especially was such a profound healing for everybody."

There was some initial resistance from within the industry in 2006, particularly from U.S. promoters, she says, but that has largely changed. When Benveniste, who also represents SYSTEM OF A DOWN, DEFTONES and CYPRESS HILL, began approaching record labels with a sampling from the new sessions, the offers started coming from virtually every major label; the band eventually signed with Virgin/EMI.

"The response has been amazing. We got massive offers off of four or five songs," says Benveniste. "The most important thing to me was that we position this as a new band moving forward. The band is not a heritage act — this band is a new act and we're going to market it as such. It's a double-headed monster."

Alice In Chains is big enough to create their own label, free of any contract with a corporation. They would have more revenue from their own venture.

I hope Virgin/EMI doesn't screw these guys. I also hope they issue this album ASAP and on vinyl too.

Oh wow, this was quite a suprise. As Cain wrote, they would benefit more from going solo/own label but I guess they are lazy.

Looking forward to the new record anyways..

I hope it has that deep and devastating feeling of doom, like they did in Layne Staley years. I loved how they ventured deep into darkness of one's mind.

There are maybe 5 rock bands on Earth that can truely do it without a label. Metallica, U2, The Stones, uh maybe only. 3. Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead still have a record company. The 3 bands I listes above still have a record company. AIC are nowhere near big enough to go DIY with a major release. THat being said, after over 13 years of nothing and a change to an unknown singer, to get a fall release off the bat means that this album is going to be really fucking good. Virgin is deciding that the new AIC is strong enough to compete against the new Daughtry, Dr. Dre and whomever wins American Idol this year. THe fall releases have to give the company its best shot for a million plus. Can't wait to hear it.

or not here they come! actually they don't have the beards anymore, they shaved 'em off a few weeks ago for some award show or some shit. these guys have nothing to prove. they shopped thje record around so they could get paid, something they can't do on their own....yet. once this monster drops, people will be able to listen to nothing else. why would anyone mention american idol and AIC in the same sentence?!

It's the 21st century. They have an established name. They just need a good website and to sell the album online, or maybe even do pay what you want, like radiohead did on that one album.

When a record label is involved, you barely get a cut from the CD anyways. Maybe the band members aren't internet savvy yet?

I think you guys are making bad analogies. Radiohead could do it, as well as NIN because they have had continuous releases for the past several years. People will be wary of a Layne-less AIC, thus won't rush to the site to download directly from them. There will be a ridiculous amount of promotion on this; commericals, appearances, giant posters you will be able to see from space, etc. That all takes a LOAD of cash, the kind of load only a major can produce up front before album sales begin. A band that has been out of the spotlight for 10 years needs this sort of promotion, especially with a new singer that the general public has largely never heard of before.

And how is Virgin going to water down the sound, when the album is pretty much already done? Jerry & Co has never watered down their product before, so why would they allow it now? Don't you think that they shopped it around to those companies that afford the band 100% creative control? This album is going to sound exactly as Jerry & Co want it to sound, I guarantee that.

This is why they were smart to sign with a major:
They already have a (mostly) finished product that they paid to record themselves. So they are not going to have to get a money front from the record company for an expensive full year of recording. That is where the majors fuck you over money wise. Instead they will get a nice advance that will be easily covered by the sales of the cd. They will still be in a partnership and there for responsible for a portion of the money for the reproduction of the product. But this too should be covered by sales even if the album doesn't tear up the chart. This way the guys might get some money for the cd in the long run. As well as get to keep tour money and not have to spend months on the road just to pay back advances to the record company.

This is why self releasing in this case might not have been the best idea:
They already have paid to record the cd, they would then have to risk further money out of pocket to reproduce the product. The way sales go today with all the downloading, that is a big risk. They have a lot of work to do to sell themselves as a new band like they want...that takes promotion that they would again have to pay for out of pocket with out a label (and all it's other business holdings) to partner with and also take it's own money risks with a portion of that cost . With out support that is lots of paying out with no sure promise of return. At least with the major if it/they tank their pocket isn't the only one being hit.

This is why Virgin/EMI isn't going to "fuck up" the cd:
They signed them based on the songs they heard....they had other offers based on those songs... Virgin/EMI is buying a product at this point not a potential product they can mold. If this is a multi cd deal then that means that Virgin/EMI could try and fuck up the NEXT cd but this one is going to be what it is going to be. That is what all the parties signed up for.

What would be a win for AIC is if this is only a 1 cd deal and it hits huge. Then they have had help with the leg work of relaunching the "brand" Alice in Chains and can now go it alone with out a major or be in a position to get a contract that gives them the control and money they deserve.

I have heard lots of good from a number of people that have heard what they have so far and can't wait to hear the new cd when it comes out!!!!

You pretty much broke it down in Laymen terms for all the know-nothings on here. It's pretty much like Lars Ulrich recently said. A record company is like a bank. A band like Metallica does not need a bank because they can put up whatever up-front money they need. A coming-back-from-obcurity band like Alice In Chains most definitely need the up-front money, not to mention a marketing department, to take care of shit like promotion and distributions...the kind of shit a small band like Alice in Chains (yes, they are a small band right now) doesn't need to be bogged down with.

It's amazing any of you fucker's aren't working in the industry right now with all your sage career advice.
