DREAM THEATER: New Single Available For Free Download For 24 Hours Only - May 5, 2009
Starting on May 6 at 12:00 a.m (midnight) EST, click here to download a free MP3 of "A Rite of Passage", the first single from DREAM THEATER's upcoming album "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", due in stores June 23. The free MP3 will be available for 24 hours. After that, the track will stream on RoadrunnerRecords.com.

In addition to the standard-version CD, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" will also be available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc, special-edition CD that will include the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.

Six weeks prior to the June 23 street date, Roadrunner will release one cover song per week through digital retailers.

DREAM THEATER commenced work on "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" — the band's second for Roadrunner, following up 2007's "Systematic Chaos" — in October of last year.

Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci are once again at the helm as producers, while Paul Northfield mixed the record.

"Black Clouds & Silver Linings" track listing:

01. A Nightmare to Remember
02. A Rite of Passage
03. Wither
04. The Shattered Fortress
05. The Best of Times
06. The Count of Tuscany

A video for the first single, "A Rite of Passage", was shot in late March.

Portnoy previously stated about the upcoming CD, "Imagine a DREAM THEATER album with 'A Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium', 'Learning To Live', 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album... COULD YOU HANDLE IT?? Excited? I sure am!!!!"

I like DT but they've gotten quite derivative lately. And they were kind of derivative in the first place.

You always get a good album from Dream Theater but thats maybe their foult also, they may have stopped hitting some fans in the fans like in the beginning. but i like all their albums and i rather have a good to great album after album then do a Metallica, make shitty albums almost for 20 years and then suddenly make one ok album and everyone think they are great again.
Dream Theater is a grear band and people who like them should check out bands like Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giants, Porcupine Tree and more, they are not as heavy but still fucking great bands.

^^Just to finish Doros78's thought, some bands to check out if you're into prog: Redemption, Pain Of Salvation (earlier stuff), Zero Hour, Adagio, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, OSI, Fates Warning (duh), Pagans Mind, To-Mera, Exivious, Textures, Symphony X, anything involving Ron Jarzombeck (Blotted Science), Outworld, Opeth, Nevermore, Evergrey, and a whole slew of others I can't think of right now.

It's actually different for them. I wouldn't have known who this was due to the samples and vocal weirdness during the first verse. Kind of straight-forward, but like a lot of Dream Theater songs, it builds and gets better as the tune progresses. It picks up and gets metal after the 5:00 mark. Some shred--this is killer (yeah, I'm listening as I write). The solo is outrageous and the underlying riffing, very cool. Keyboard solo, then some stupid sound effects for a few seconds. Rudess, go figure. Back to the main chorus, which is backed by harmonized single guitar melody lines, a little Evergrey-ish in parts. Ends with the main riff abruptly.

I dig it! Not what I expected, and it sounds like they're trying something new but more solid if that makes sense. I'm not a huge Dream Theater fan these days, but I think I'll be picking this up.

yea Rush are great, but i like Dream Theater better, maybe its because they are heavier but i think Dream Theater are on par with Rush instrumentaly, just because Rush are an older band doesnt mean they are better. and im not sure Rush could play all songs by Dream Theater but im pretty sure Dream Theater could play any Rush song. but both are great bands but still very different. and yea Gavin Harrison is great but im not sure he would fit the heavier stuff of Dream Theater.

Great song, little different from usual Dream Theater wich is nice.
but still you always get Dream Theater when you buy Dream Theater album. that wasnt always the case with Rush in the 80's, got a little too much stuck in the 80' stuff for my taste and Alex Lifeson too i have heard but they have been great since Presto.

I'm just getting into more prog-metal stuff and I'm loving DT - the singer is a bit light for my tastes but, hey, a good band is a good band right?

I can't help but feel I've heard these riffs before in various places... the 'heavy' section from about 5 mins reminds me of Megadeth for sure... sort of Youthanasia/World Needs a Hero albums... even the solo sounds like some Marty and Dave licks strung together, right up until 5:48 when it kicks back into to some freaky time sig that is very DT.

Portnoy and Petrucci are absolute masters of their instruments though.

Liked it - pretty solid I guess but nothing incredibly

Myung is probably the most underrated bass player around, hes a fucking monster on the bass. and Rudess is a great keyboard player. but yea a good band is a good band, but you dont have to like them.
Neglect: aggree with you on those bands, havent heard all of them but they are all very good. and of course Frank Zappa.
and the Focus, Mahavisnu Orchestra and of course Mars Volta and some other bands too.
and all these bands usually get better with each listen and you are always finding something new. but its sometimes good to just listen to simple rock/metal stuff like GNR, Motley Crue, AC/DC, AIC and many but its all for different times and places.

The riffs are very strong and raw.

The guitars sound great. Fantastic drumming.

But the melody of the singing is disappointing. And that background "talking" in the beginning is irritating! We want to enjoy the riffs! Without that kind of distortion.

I found a Nightmare to Remember on the web last night (nobody yell at me, I already pre-ordered the 3-cd special edition). Have to say, it's good, BUT trying way too hard to be Opeth in that song. I'm hoping that as time goes on, maybe I won't feel that way, because I rarely love DT songs the first couple of times I hear them (and they're my favorite band). I know Mike is a huge Opeth fan, but let Opeth be Opeth and DT be DT. Has anyone else heard it?

what? this song is nothing like Opeth in any way. and Yes, Rush and Pink Floyd are influences on Dream Theater but Dream Theater isnt very much like them but yea some songs are, but definently not this one. good song, maybe not their best but still very good and better then the best songs by many other bands

How many times can you re-write the same song and keep your audience? I've been a loyal DT listener since '89 and I'm done. Dream Theater desperately needs an outside producer to help bring something new from these guys. Until they do, I'm not buying any more CDs or going to any more shows. This song is formulaic and predictable. Rick Rubin.... save Dream Theater, please!!

hahaha are you tone-deaf or what??? how can this be the same song as ony other song by them??? them all bands must be writing the same song over and over. and why the fuck bring Rick Rubin so they can try to remake some albums they made 20 years ago????
like Metallica? and make the album sound bad?
its just your loss.

My commentary was about "A Nightmare to Remember". Rite of Passage definitely does not sound like Opeth at all.
I'm hoping this one (Rite of Passage) grows on me, because I'm not loving it (yet).

It's got to be tough to be in a band and pick the first single, because you are your own critic in a way -- two prime examples of bands not realizing how amazing the rest of their albums are by picking the wrong first singles:
Dream Theater: Constant Motion -- liked it initially, didn't stand the test of time like most of of the other songs on the album. In my opinion, and in contrast, ITPOE I & II will go down as top 10 in DT history.
Metallica: Day That Never Comes -- decent, definitely not great, by far the worst vocals on the album -- there are 6 songs that are FAR better than that on DM.
