METALLICA's digital "box set" called "The Complete Metallica", featuring the band's entire 163-track recorded catalog, was made available last month.

"The Complete Metallica" was released during a high-profile period for the San Francisco-based hard-rock heroes. On March 29, Activision released the highly anticipated video game Guitar Hero: Metallica, featuring 28 songs from the band's nearly 30-year career. In addition, METALLICA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors legendary rock and roll performers, in a ceremony which took place in Cleveland on April 4.

METALLICA recently completed its first proper tour of the United States and Canada in four years in support of the platinum-selling "Death Magnetic", which debuted at No. 1 in September 2008 and won two Grammy Awards for "Best Metal Performance" (for the track "My Apocalypse") and "Best Recording Package."

Is that supposed to excuse the fact they played the song like shit? I love Metallica and all, but their lack of effort in the live arena is painfully apparent. Mistakes everywhere, no double bass, blown lyrics, and just sloppy overall.

This band used to rule live, but now they just go through the motions. You can't listen to this and deny it.

I´m glad they played it live at last. Btw, this song is demanding and James has problems with his voice at times but he is always the best, however Kirk has fucked up the whole solo, it sounds awful, he didn´t have his best day. So as to Lars, we cannot ask for more. The setlist is always changing, thing that I celebrate, but they should remove Enter Shitman and Nothing Else Farters from the setlist. THAT would be perfect.

priest_metalhead

"just keep in mind that they haven't played the song for 4+ years."

just keep in mind that is what rehersals are for. so four and a half years or the 1st time (whatever) my ass. they practiced their ases off to play it and that's the best they could do? c'mon.

"they'll get there if they play it more."

again, that is what rehersal is for. you don't just decide to play a song live without rehersing it. no the won't get better. james "trying" to sing it instead of just belting it out sounds absolutely terrible. and "no legs" lars had to change the kick drums pattern just to make a lame attempt at playing it. tuning that song down sounds terrible as well and not to mention the issue of kirk's lame solo which he used to nail.

"same reviews came for All Nightmare Long, which was the first time EVER that they had played it "

your implication that this was like the first time they played it has some warped correlation to it for a song that has been out since 1989 holds no water.

"deadbeat"

"You guys are unbelievable. You should be lucky they even considered playing the song live. We can't all be perfectionists, nothing is ever good enough for you."

why should i be lucky they broke out a song that hardly resembles the recording in the worst possible way???? plenty is good enough for me but that was pure crap. i first saw metallica in 1985 it that annihlated every single live video clip i've of theirs in years. their best was years in the past. nu metallicrap is plain embarassing.

"Anyway, kickass video. Yeah, suck on it."

i'm glad you like it but it was absolutely horrendous so you go suck on it yourself, kid.

"jesus christ"

my thoughts exactly.

".. gosh people are not ready to give anyone a fair chance before rushing in with their comments!!"

i didn't rush in. i happened to see the article and listened to the song with an open mind. i actually like to be proven wrong and in this case i was 100% right with my preconceived idea about what would happen had they played it. it blows. i gave my ex-favorite band a fair chance and it was horrible, just plain horrible.

"sinned"

"What's with all the hate on here?"

i think you're confusing hate with TRUTH.

"You know people are just talking shit when they dig so much into what was a good performance of the song."

if i said that was a mediocre performance of that song i would be a liar because it really did suck.

"90% of you have never picked up a non-plastic instrument in your life, and maybe 50% of you have never played in a live setting. So suck it."

i've played guitar and sang since 1982 in front of good sized crowds so you go suck it, snot nose.

"That was good, and it doesn't hurt to admit it."

it does if you're delusional which is obviously the case.

"I'd love to have been at that show."

i think it would be cool if you could have seen the show since you're such a fanboy of theirs. sincerely.

to reiterate, metallica used to be my favorite band but now they are just a shell of what they once were.

Dude, Pro-Tools wasn't around in 1988-1989.

I'm not sure how a producer like Fleming would "fake" double bass in the analog age, but some trickery was at work, 'cuz Lars never played like that before or since.

I'm not mindlessly bashing Metallica...I like them, and I like Lars as a person (I know I'm in the minority on THAT one), but his drumming has gotten worse and worse over the years. No thought or effort put into it...just bash the hell out your kit and make scary faces.

I believe that they know that Dyers Eve is a fan favorite, but they have rarely played it live if ever. This is the first time I have seen it on a set list. Being a musician I cant understand why they would play it live if their having troubles in practice, which Im sure they had. You cant blame age, thats just a cop out. There are plenty of bands that play faster and are older.

Metallica used to be my favorite band untill they took metal from their name... tallica. I do have to say that I really like the new record. Not that all of it is good and it took some time to get into it. They are not THRASH anymore its more like Stoner Metal which I like as well. I just watched the performance of Dyer's Eve a few times. A couple of comments...

There are many other bands of roughly the same age that perform their songs with high precision. Many of these bands are faster and have more aggressive songs. Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Dream Theater - just to name a few.

Folks, this is Metallica. Biggest metal band in the world. There is no excuse for a performance like this. If the previous mentioned bands can pull it off, it should be within reason to expect Metallica to do the same. James played tight but his vocals were off. Kirk's solo was off, but at least he tried. Lars is the most disappointing of them all because he didn't even attempt the double-kick. Kudos to Rob, he's actually playing the song correctly.

I agree that Dyer's Eve is a difficult song to play and is rarely played. Maybe they were just having a bad night. However, my perspective is this: Playing live is their job. This is what they do for a living. People are paying a lot of money to see them live. I argue that it is reasonable for people to expect nothing less than a tight performance and unacceptable that Metallica would deliver anything shy of excellence.

Hetfield and whoever is the bassist at the time have always been the strong points when it comes to technique and precision in Metallica: They are a great band because of their songwriting skills and creativity anyway, not because of technical precision anyway: Live their strenght has always been energy, and this version of Dyers Eve KILLS when it comes to energy. Great vocals by Hetfield too.
