MEGADETH Completes Recording New Album
- May 20, 2009
|
|
|
On January 7, MEGADETH commenced the recording process for its twelfth studio album at the band's own Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California. The CD is once again being helmed by acclaimed British producer Andy "Undie" Sneap, who produced MEGADETH's last album, "United Abominations" (May 2007, Roadrunner Records).
Tentatively due in September via Roadrunner, MEGADETH's forthcoming LP will be the group's first with guitarist Chris Broderick, who replaced Glen Drover at the end of 2007.
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has issued the following studio update:
"I'm at the studio right now, Vic's Garage, and we are done! We're just right now finishing the last couple of notes on the new record, and Andy getting ready to pack his bags and head up to Los Angeles tomorrow to get ready to fly back home on Thursday. Man, this has been a long, grueling, enduring process but it's been so worth it, and I'm so excited. I'm more excited about this record then I've been in any record since back in the 1980s. I would say, probably since, well definitely since 'Rust In Peace' there's nothing that's excited me this much — maybe 'Countdown' ['To Extinction'], but this is just absolutely insane."
Listen to Dave's entire audio message at TheLiveLine.com or call Dave on his TheLiveLine number at (866) 597-6342.

Looking forward to hearing some more "clever" puns and phrases such as:

Are so stupid. You can talk all the shit you want, and bash Dave all you want, but Dave will still be one of the baddest mother fuckers in metal ever. Now hurry and get back to your Korn and fuck off.

I certainly hope the quality of this album lives up to the hype Mustain's given it over the course of the last few months
"united" fell way below expectations. And I'm not sure I can take another let-down. I'll have to pretend that Megadeth recorded rust in peace and then promptly fell into a black hole singularity and never tarnished the Rust LP with any superseeding trainwrecks

Dave has hyped this album up and he did the same with U Abominations but that cd was really good so hope he's right on this one. "Washington is Next" is a superb song and an instant Megadeth classic in my book. Can't wait...the fear I have is that when he aligns himself w/ great guitarists, great stuff normally is forthcoming. The new dude is nowhere near as good as Glen Drove and that is my fear. Drover was the whole package...a shredder w/ melody and some blues thrown in. One of my favorite guitarists so I hope Chris can live up to that.

Death Magnetic was very very good. The only crap part of it was that thery were stupid enough to name a song "the Unforgiven Part 30" That was such a gaffe it's not even funny. It's stupidity personified! Other than that, Kirk Hammett brought the solos and the song writing was very well done, Lars drums actually sound like drums and not trash cans and James' voice is spot on for the first time in years. The guitars could have been turned up a bit more because the sound is distorted a bit throughout the album but that's the producers fuckin fault.

One Megadeth fan to another, I gotta' ask what about UA fell so far below your expectations? I mean, where did you really see it go so wrong? I've been a fan for around 15 years and I really thought it had a lot of elements very true to Megadeth--solid riffs, memorable solos, thought-provoking and politically relevant lyrics, cool choruses and melodic rhythms.
Assuming we see eye to eye on what makes a good Megadeth record, I'm really curious as to what UA would need to meet your standards and still be Megadeth...
I guess I would say, be ready for another disappointment; Dave has already said that this next record will NOT be another Rust in Peace. Personally, how could it be? Different place in life, different band members which implies different music altogether...

dude, first off, I really appreciate your approach and attitude. refreshing to say the least
why UA fell over for me? to be honest, it's actually really difficult to puy my finger on!
I don't know for sure, but there was just something "Missing". It really didn't feel like he was writing with any adventure any more. It just sounded like it came right out of Dave's comfort zone, rather than really stretching his creativity. He's been so far removed from the Narc, and will to really PISS PEOPLE OFF (which is what I adored about early Megadeth) that it just seems so much more passive aggressive in comparisom lately.
Instrumentally, definitely a vast improvement to a few things he'd done BEFORE UA
but... i don't know. Lacked a little of that good old atmosphere. Even earlier tracks like The scorpion, Tears in a vial, still had a bit more of that familiar BITE than what I could feel from UA
I'm keeping an open mind

apparently, you, my friend, have never heard Chris Broderick play guitar before. I respect that Glen Drover is a machine and absolute shredder, but Chris Broderick blows him away. Have you ever even listened to Nevermore? you can't get much better than Chris Broderick and Jeff Loomis, but when it does get better, do you know what you get? you get Chris Broderick and Dave Mustaine.

I didn't really like United abomination either. I didn't like any of the songs, besides perhaps Sleepwalker. And the production did nothing for me - I think it sounds like almost any other of Sneaps productions - shure, the sounds are ok but way to triggered and unorganic for my liking. And the UN bashing was.... really wierd. And the re-recording of A taut le monde was embarrasing to say the least.
But - on the other hand - I really dug "The system has failed"! That one was great imo! Not as "static" as UA, alot more dynamic - and better songs as well.
Dave is a great songwriter at times, and I really like his guitar playing and his singing style.
So, I have still high hopes for this record! Rock on!

Since countdown to extinction there has been just crap albums. Thought the system has failed was gonna change that after hearing kick the chair, great song, bought the album all giddylike, but then again it was the only good song on the crappy album.
So I'm a first day downloader, and if it holds up after a few spin religious dave get's my money. But I'm not expecting much since dave doesn't really seem to like writing complex shit anymore.
And in nevermore chris was just a hired hand, steve smyth on the other hand both played on that high level and wrote great material for them. So Chris has still alot to prove...

Dave hyped up UA, too, and like some of you others in here, the album didn't do much for me. I probably haven't popped it on much more than a month after it was released. It just sounded like watered-down Megadeth. TSHF was promising, at least the first half of it was, but then the second half just trails off imo.
I own every Megadeth record, even the bad ones (which is mostly pretty subjective, but most of us can agree Risk is by far their worst), and I will purchase this one too to keep the collection going. I just hope it can, at the very least, pick up some intensity that has been lacking in years. Dave makes his best music when he's "pissy," and I've seen nothing by hugs and kisses in his posts for the last year, so I'm definitely kind of on the fence until I can hear it.

I agree wholeheartedly...except on two counts. First, Jeff Loomis is hardly amateurish. I don't care much for Nevermore, but Loomis is pretty impressive.
Also, Al Pitrelli, while certainly not my favorite Megadeth guitarist, absolutely does not suck. I saw them when they toured behind The World Needs a Hero, and Pitrelli broke his B string during the Hangar 18 solo. Somehow, he still managed to play it note-for-note. Now THAT was impressive.
