GODSMACK Working On 'Really Heavy' New Album
- May 23, 2009
|
|
GODSMACK has begun work on the material for the band's follow-up to 2006's "IV" which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 chart. Artisan News Service caught up with GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna to get his thoughts on the direction the new album is taking. "It's gonna be really heavy," he said. "I mean, it's very aggressive. I'm not really sure; it's very premature right now. Right now we just finished one track for the Crüe Fest this Summer. But as far as the whole record goes, I think it's going to be a lot more in your face. I don't think there's going to be any 'Voodoo's or 'Serenity's on this one. We decided to go balls out!" Watch video footage of Erna talking about the next GODSMACK record at this location. GODSMACK is part of the lineup for MÖTLEY CRÜE's Crüe Fest 2 tour, which will also include THEORY OF A DEADMAN, DROWNING POOL, and new act CHARM CITY DEVILS. In late 2007, the band released a greatest hits collection called "Good Times, Bad Times - Ten Years of Godsmack" and announced that it was going on hiatus. Erna worked on his solo album during this period, while the other three members of the group started a side project called ANOTHER ANIMAL. Erna recently completed work on his first solo album, although he has yet to reveal a title or release date for the disc.

How about "really good"? Just because you detune and blast power chords through dual rectifiers doesn't mean shit anymore. Anyone can sound "heavy". Boring...

I've learned to like 'em even though they've carved out a career ripping off Alice In Chains (named after an AIC song and stole their sound). But, now the real AIC is coming back so they better step up their game.

I can understand that they are not everyone's cup of tea, but I dig em, and no, i'm not one of those new metal kids who likes all of the other new metal crap that goes along with them. I can understand where that parallel could be made.

I really hope Sully backs off, he is surrounded by some great musicians. If everyone puts something in on it it will be great. Whatever happens I'm sure it will be cool. I can't wait to hear it, there acoustic stuff is good but I like their heavy stuff better. I'm happy to hear that there will be no 'Voodoo' on this album.

i have all albums by both bands and have never heard any similarities in the music other than perhaps GS's slower/mellow tunes, i.e. voodoo & serenity, but even those don't make me think "oooh, these guys are trying to sound like alice", nope, sorry, I just don't hear it. IMO, there's more going on in an AIC song as far as texture, melodies and harmonies than GS. GS do have these characteristics, but they are forshadowed by crunchy chords & the low E. Two bands with some great music, though I haven't spun IV much at all. I do hope GS dumps the commercial trend. Lastly, well said by "old fart". It may carry the AIC moniker and have the core members, but it only has 1/2 the heart. Layne may have not contributed much musically, but he did put his heart into what Jerry wrote. It's a horrible tragedy when such a talent , or anyone for that matter, is lost due to addiction.

WELL OF COURSE they are working on a "heavier" album. That is the TREND these days, right? EVERY band says this now but they weren't years ago when the word METAL was taboo.

He can play anything, I know this personally. Sully stifles him and he basically plays what Sully wants him to. We all need a paycheck right?
I was the lead singer of the band he was in before Godsmack....

the 1st 3 releases were solid but somewhat monotaneous. The last one was utter crap and didn't they pull some accoustical BS? They know now that they have to recapture the harder fan base or it's over.

the comparison is made becaue people look on the surface only. They see that they named themselves after an AIC song, that they put out an acoustic EP (AIC was one of the first, if not the first, heavy band to do so), but they also like to copy Metallica too. I mean, Voodoo Too? He was trying to replicate, unfortunately, Unforgiven Too. Both songs are awful.
You're right, the music is very different from AIC, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I really like Godsmack albums 1-3. 4, however, is dreadful. The acoustic EP was a staple in my player for months (yes, I jumped on the Unplugged bandwagon-I love that stuff). But 4 just didn't do it for me.
Here's hoping for something better on the next one.

First album was good, like Disturbed and Korn and then it got worse from their kind of like every other radio band from the mid to late 90's
