NIGHTWISH Frontwoman Talks About Her Singing Technique

NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon recently wrote a blog entry on her official web site where whe talked about singing technique. She said, "It's hard to go in to exactly what I do when I sing since some things are 'by nature' and just come naturally but, of course, a lot of things are what I have learned earlier in vocal lessons and also during my career as the singer in NIGHTWISH where my voice is needed to be able to sing many high-pitched songs for 1.5 hours many nights a week.
"First of all, what I use most when I sing is a technique called 'belting.' For you who don't know what kinda vocal sound types normally are talked about, there are different sounds and techniques to use when singing. This technique is a way to come very high up by pushing the vocal cords together, slamming them against each other, so that no air at all can leak through. If any air leaks through, it can make the voice soar and aching. I do this technique also by thinking that I lift my upper lift upwards, kinda showing my teeth and a good sound to practise for it is to imitate an evil witch. You know the evil laughter. Also imitating a car like: öhrn, öhrn, öhrn... as a car accelerating forward. These things make me lift the lip and close the cords. Of course there are so many more things to do to make this technique perfect but that's an easier way to explain what I do."

In a recent interview with Classic Rock's Dave Ling, NIGHTWISH keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen was asked if alarm bells rang when, echoing her predecessor, Olzon recently hired a personal manager (Swedish management company Hagenburg Management, which also represents EUROPE and THE CARDIGANS). "At the beginning I had a feeling of déjà vu," he replied. "But when we discussed it I understood that she needs somebody who speaks her own language [Swedish]. Her manager is a very, very reasonable guy."
When asked how Anette is handling the fame, Tuomas replied, "She has told me a couple of times that she might not be able to handle it, on top of her divorce. I've seen her close to collapse and it has scared me, so we are protecting her. There will be no more interviews."

I'm certain she doesn't swallow, some interview with her she talked about disliking everything sexy and hating porn etc etc

look at that dress, seriously, this can not come naturally to any normal human being - she had to stady this dress technique.. look, what the dress is doinh on her back (1:49 - 1:56 and 2:50 I think). She looks like pregnant on front side as well as on the back side. Since when is wearing of potato sack good idea for Nightwish? Actuall, I need to buy some potatoes today, so thanks for reminding me. :-)

lame performance they will not have any fans left soon, that i can tell you. Terrible, and how low was that volume, really? If you can hear people talking to each other it can´t be much of a volume at all. They are not huge in Europe by the way, playing in big rockclubs and some big festivals don´t make a band huge. Maybe in Finland then, but who cares about that, thats where they started.

are potatoe sacks in this summer? And the blonde hair, wow she looks like vince neil from a distance. This girl CAN sing and they're a good band. Not metal in my book but I would go see them in concert. They could use more of a metal guitarist to bolster their sound. If Malmsteen and her did something together perhaps they would be a stronger band but that will NEVER happen so they'll make some good cd's here and there.

No one in America cares about this band, it's over-the-top shit. You'd think we would normally go for something like that, but not in this case. We don't care about singing techniques or anything else to do with this band.
The one thing I would like answered though, is how does this band book shows over here?

Good point, Maidenhouston. If you want to read more nonsense from Mrs. Artist, check her webside. She has her own webside, because she actually performed ONE SONG completely without NIGHTWISH and she writes there daily to keep her fans informed: what she thinks before sleeping, what she wears, what cat she wants. As Anette Olzon says on her webside: "let us make this world a better place". Let your mail adresse there - If there is any chance she will write about her fart technique, they will for sure keep you informed.

She would make this world a better place by giving me a lap dance and getting rid of that potatoe sack she's wearing. And was royally pissed that not only did the opening band royally suck, but a band with Nightwish's catalog didn't even make it to the 90 minute mark. For fuck sake's my old band had a 90 minute set. Sure, it wasn'y symphonic metal, but you know tarja could go the distance and more, and this bitch should. I know I won't likely waste money to see the same line up again, despite it being a very awesome show. I doubt they will ever tour America again.

I knew you would like it. There is a web page in Finland, it is called Metal from Finland and it is meant basically for worshiping finish metal bands. On daily base you have there news about Nightiwsh, Tarja, Apocalyptica, etc. But people who write there are "simplemessagists", they basically write things like "Nightwish rocks". AND they had this huge discussion about Anettes web page. So, just to know, what they are talking about, I checked. Because it looked to me, that they did not have a clue what exactly they did argue about. And it (the web page) really was SO FUNNY. For me, you know. On the other hand, it might be a webpage, where all Finland looks every day, as far as we know. I try to respect all these cultural things, being not finish, having Nightwish not to be a part of my religion. But still - she is 38, I am 40. You might say we are the same generation. But as for me - she is from different planet. Have you read her "Thoughts before sleeping?" I need to do plans for another day, think about shopping, cooking, staff. She is thinking about things what happened to her 26 years ago. DO YOU REMEMBER what happened to you 26 years ago? Well, if there was nothing happening within last 26 years in yout life, then it might be the case.. Still, what is the reason to THINK about THAT? I just can not help myslef, this is just too weird. Acceptable, if you are a teenager, but for somebody who might have her own grandchildren, soon - it is just too weird.
