STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Working With Producer DON WAS
- May 28, 2009
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS/ex-VELVET REVOLVER singer Scott Weiland has told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that STP is working on material for a new album, tentatively due in 2010.
"We've already got 18 songs written. We'll probably whittle it down to the best 12," he said. "But then there'll be a lot of other songs ready for the next record."
He added, "We're working with (producer) Don Was. And if he could make records with the (THE ROLLING) STONES and all their shenanigans ... then he can handle STP."
The upcoming release of PILOTS' sixth studio album and first since 2001's "Shangri-La-Dee-Da" has been complicated by a contractual dispute between Weiland, drummer Eric Kretz and STP's label, Atlantic Records.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS were reactivated in 2008 after a six-year layoff, during which time Weiland recorded two albums with VELVET REVOLVER before being dismissed in April 2008.
Weiland issued a second solo effort, called "Happy In Galoshes", last November and has been touring on his own behind that release.
Fan-filmed video footage of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS' December 31 (New Year's Eve) concert at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California can be viewed below (clip uploaded by "lisapolisa").

All I ask is that's it better than 'Shangri-La-DeeDa'...got that was awful. If "All In the Suit That You Wear" is where they left off, then maybe this will be good.

I think Don Was produced Voodoo Lounge which was a great album

STP is (in my opinion) one of those bands who hit it big with their first album (thanks mostly to the popular style of that time) and has never been able to recapture that. Watching recent performances has made me cringe to be honest. The band is still great and able to write and perform very well. Scott Weiland however has come to disappoint me every time I hear him these days. He frequently has trouble keeping his breath, his dance moves are just plain scary and his tone just isn't what it used to be. Don't get me wrong, I understand years of singing road abuse, drugs and alcohol have their effects. I couldn't do it, thats for sure. But I guess I just wish they would really do something great again. Hasn't been done is over 15 years by these guys. Here is to hoping.

So, that way they will make sure that at least 6 songs on the next album will worse than any song on this one.

Everything this band has done after the second album is pure shit. They should stop wasting time on new material and just continue living off the first two records--especially since the stress of writing and recording can only push Weiland closer to the precipice.

everything from album #2 and on is amazing. its less redio friendly maybe, but the songs are great. Take a while to grow on you, lots of variety, like some of the great old bands...but its all opinion. If you like them at all, their last album may have been there best, not a bad song on it. 4 I could say the same....but its 8-9 years later, they are over 40, wasted alot of prime years.

Maybe they can do a cover of Walk Like a Dinosaur on the new album!!
Does anyone else think that Big Empty gets longer every time ya hear it? It's like Black Hole Sun. I swear each time it's played they tack on another grueling 10 seconds!!! I'm surprised T-boner hasn't splooged all over this thread yet. You're losing your touch T!!

Core and Purple are good albums, the rest are complete garbage. I think the reason so many have got turned off of STP aside from their worsening music is the freaky lead singer. Why do lead singers gotta do the most retarded things to keep the attention on them.

some people crack me up on these threads "his moves are scary"? ok, I suppose you could judge a bands catalog or output by the way a FRONTMAN moves...everyone is entitled to an opinion so heres mine, the first album for what it is, is good I think they got better and better with each album - Purple, Tiny Music and No.4 especially, is a way underated album. Shang-gra la dee da, wasn't that bad, it's a grow on you type of thing, at least for me. With that said, I bet they'll pick up right where No.4 left off (at least thats what I'm hoping) either way I still look forward to new music from what has to be one of the greatest bands to have ever exsisted, in a nut shell BRING IT STP!!

exactly my sentiments. SLDeeDa sonically does pick right up from 4. It is a grow on you album and those tend to be the best cuz you don't tire of them. But you have to listen...you don't have to like STP, its all opinion, but my guess is if you liked the 2nd album, you'd probably like the others but didn't really get into them. Very underrated, solid albums, all the songs.
Freaky moves. My guess anyone saying that is young, cuz the new front men are all boring Cookie cutters. All the great front men of the past were super freaky, androgenous, Jagger/Bowie, all down the line. He's a rocker. A F up, yes, and they wasted lots of good years, but freakier the better, unless its a complete act.
STP, while boring alot from Page, or Bowie, were one, if not THE last of the hard rock bands that could play, have heavy material, mellow, mid tempo...and mellow without being a sappy ballad(Sourgirl for one)...1st album comparisons to PJ, for my tastes, they went & blew PJ completely out of the water, in the studio at least...take a good listen to the last 2 albums, they are great.

Right on right on.....I just thought of something...imagine people actually taling about a band! It was fun....now comes the slaggers and insults lol!

If by young you mean 30 years old, then yes, I am young. I can appreciate a good front man but Weiland has become a bad impression of David Bowie at best. The point was really about the fact that he puts more focus on his "image" and stage presence these days and way too little on vocals. Watch the video of their last performance on Jimmy Kimmell Live. Disgustingly bad performance by Weiland.
YES I do judge a band on what can be replicated live. ANYONE can go into the studio and with hundreds of thousands of dollars worht of equipment, they can sound pretty good. If you can't replicate it live......get off the stage.
Bottom line is that this band has fallen really far from where they started and Weiland is not helping the situation.

I cannot fucking wait. STP are easily one of the best bands of the last two decades. Core is a great album, but people like cscott need to get a clue and listen to the others. They are so much better than Core in every single way.

I see what you are saying too, & you dont' just spout shit, you know what you're talking about. StP could be a great live band. But I also agree SW can be too Much into being Bowie Jr, and just sort of wasted, not living up to his talent....but, as far as the studio stuff goes, I don't think people actually listened to the laset few albums only because they didn't get radio play, so..."it must suck"..take a listen, they are killer albums.
COMMENT | Gotcha Cscott.... posted by : Hazerfazer 5/29/2009 8:22:33 AM
yeah I agree he does try alittle too hard to "cop the Bowie vibe", but he makes no bones about it in interviews. I will say though "replicating" what a band can do in a studio as opposed to being live can rarely be duplicated, I'm mean bands like Floyd or Radiohead seemingly pull it off I suppose but "hard rock" type of bands always stray from "the studio sound". However like you said, that Kimmel "performance" was pretty sad on Weiland's part. His recent track record with STP live seems to blow donkey! So with that....I hear ya. Heres to hopefully a great new chapter in the STP camp. Because reguardless....I love that shizz! (STP music)

straying from studio sound, or recording is fine, if its on purpose. If you are just playing bad, can't pull off the guitar work or vocals, then that's another thing. Scott struggles live at times. Maybe its his substance abuse, or like many singers, they just dont' pull it off....the guitarist sounds good...and I don't think you can go from this clip, its not recorded on good quality, I don't think that how it sounded live. I've heard much worse by big bands.
