COBRA CLUTCH Guitarist Dead At 24

Frederick, Maryland hardcore/thrash band COBRA CLUTCH is mourning the loss of guitarist Pat O'Brien after he died in his sleep Friday night. The group recently recorded its debut CD and had been playing shows up and down the East Coast, including several with MURPHY'S LAW. The cause of death is unknown but it's assumed there will be a toxicology report. O'Brien was 24 years old. For more informstion, visit www.myspace.com/cobra666clutch.

You should learn more theory before you start spouting off like that. It just makes you look like a fool.
Furthermore, there are a lot of great bands keeping the spirit of Metal alive. Dark Tranquillity for one, Amon Amarth, Metal is about everything and all things. It isn't limited by *just* shredding as you seem to imply. And who are you to judge what comes from the heart? Post a clip of your playing, or shut the fuck up.

To a few of the comments here, metal is NOT about solos. Not about arpeggios, sweeps. It is about songs. About aggression and then sometimes about every other emotion. Metal has ballads and metal can thrash or blues or jazz or anything else.
Sometimes Metal is hijacked by bands and labels wanting to pretend they are metal to make money. Most actually are like this. Trend Jumpers. Case and point? 5+ years ago, all the way back to 1993, it was taboo to mention the word METAL in connection with your band. New Metal was ok to say but not until much later. Now take a look at the last 5 years. Tons of bands that would never call themselves metal or anything related are now calling themselves the heaviest metal band and record they have ever put out. Tons of new kids start "metal" bands. Most are not even metal. Labels who once were metal labels, then got rid of all their metal bands, all-of-a-sudden decided to be metal labels again!
Now amongst all the phony crappy metal bands out there, there ARE and HAVE BEEN a few dozen REAL METAL BANDS that have chugged along the sometimes lonely path of artistic integrity and watched others claim riches and fame and glorious things, all in the name of their false metal. These dozen or so bands nee to be sought out and worshipped. Labels will not do it. Press will not do it. But the internet can do it. Seek and ye shall find.

It's a death is never easy to cope with, especially at such a young age.
My thoughts go out to Pat's Friends and Family.
I hope his mates go out and get proper shitfaced in his memory. (but lets keep the chemicals out of the mix)

First off as far as music theory goes (learn it! pussy!) a chromatic scale is basically Every note played in a consecutive order of semitones or half steps... So for example it would be C, C#, D, D#, E, F, etc... so if you say "all scales are based on the chromatic" Well of course!!!! Chromatics contain every note!!! if you leave a full step in between or whatever alterations are needed you get Whole Tone, Minor, Major, etc... So if your playing is based on chromatics you probably sound like Shit!! because you're not even difining a specific tonality!..... Sorry I had to get it out!... Anyway R.I.P. My Metal Brother!!

man that dude needs to shut his mouth and go learn some fking theory, so what, I played guitar for ~17 years and now guess what, i wish i'd paid attention in all the theory classes I took in college ten years ago, you need to know all scales modes chords and arpeggios inside out to truly express yourself,
so how about you go learn that, and stop posting endless chunks of egotistical drivel on message boards, we don't care how you compare to some kid on youtube, music isn't a race or a competition, the sweep picking 14 year old might think so, but so do you if you're comparing yourself to him

no, you're the puss, sweep picking is a technique to be used like any other, a technique for playing arpeggios, so you're saying no one in metal can play an arpeggio using a specific method?! how silly, that's like saying alternate picking ruined metal because it made people able to play scale fragments fast, so lets ban the use of scales and alternate picking too shall we, oh an economy picking too cos that'll make you even faster, hell lets just do away with all technique whatsoever, and we'll just listen to silence and call it metal, so long as i t's not 'fake' silence, of course!
if you actually read a fraction of the drivel he posted, you'd see he's only been playing a year, so not exactly qualified to provide his opinion on anything about playing guitar,

sweep picking used in every fuckin riff/solo is lame and done to death. and that goes for any goddamn technique that is used as a crutch. it's getting to the point where this technique is almost as bad as having shitty breakdowns in every song. and if zakkwylde has only been playing for a year, leave him alone.
rrrrrrrob you are fuckin more egotistical than he is, are you more qualified to dictate what the guitar is all about with your 17+ yrs of guitar experience, should we all wait that long before starting bands? poor pat was only 24 (doubt he had 17 yrs under his belt)

It is believed that he passed from an overdose. Pat was a great friend of my and i loved him dearly. This is extremely devastating to anyone that knew him. He will be missed greatly. Love you patrick o' brien

Pat you were the coolest dude I've met in town in forever. We met when you were just hanging out watching the smoke shop blasting white chapel from the door step. We bought a 6 pack and just drank out there all day long. Then we went to OTT and drank pitchers for the rest of the night. We watched the relapse DVD at your place and talked about riffs and horror movies and how shitty warlock's are as guitars but how they still rule. From that day on we were bro's and you were always down to hang or drink or just bullshit. I'll miss you man.. I can't believe you're gone. It's surreal. Market is empty without you. I understand this is only a news article but have RESPECT! Pat was an amazing person and would have had your back if he knew you. Please STOP posting opinions about how or why he passed away or the music that he played. All of Pat's friends were his family and this has been tough.
Pat, I will remember all of our crazy insane dancing at shows, people would get so annoyed and pissed off... it was awesome and down to being silly and dancing to "dancing queen" at Venutis haha..hanging out at your apartment.... The horror convention last year....Old Towne.....Anytime that I hear someone say "SUP!" or "WURD!", it will remind me of you 'cause those were pretty much the only two words you said haha..Pat I love you.
I hope a benefit show will occur in honor of Pat and to benefit his little girl.
