EDDIE VAN HALEN Says MICHAEL ANTHONY Quit VAN HALEN
- June 1, 2009
|
|
David Wild of RollingStone.com conducted an interview with Eddie Van Halen at the third annual Spike Guys' Choice Awards, which was taped this past Saturday night (May 30) in Culver City, California. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. RollingStone.com: The VAN HALEN tour was such a success. Were you pleasantly surprised? Eddie Van Halen: You never know. But I do know this. Janie [ Eddie's fiancée/publicist] and I are getting married on the 27th of June, and then we'll go on a honeymoon. Then Dave [ Lee Roth], Wolfie [ Van Halen], Alex [ Van Halen] and I are going into the studio and record some new music and go on tour about a year from now. RollingStone.com: Did the VAN HALEN tour help fire up some new musical ideas? Eddie Van Halen: No, I am always writing, you know. But we're a true band now. It wasn't just a reunion one-off thing. I've already gone to Dave's house four or five times over the last month. I've got so much music. It's just trying to figure out what Dave's into because we haven't written together in a long time. But it's great. It feels like we've always felt in the beginning. But I'm sober, so it's different. He's sober, so it's different. It's a wonderful feeling. RollingStone.com: Have you heard CHICKENFOOT? Eddie Van Halen: No, I haven't. RollingStone.com: No particular interest? Eddie Van Halen: Well, I don't listen to anything really, for one. RollingStone.com: You make your own music? Eddie Van Halen: Yeah, I'm too busy doing my own thing. I wish them well. The funny thing is that everyone who quits the band always claims they got fired by me. Hey, I'm not the bad guy here. When [ Sammy] Hagar left the band, Mike [ Michael Anthony] went with him. Then when we get back together with Dave, and all of a sudden, he wants back in. It's like, "No, dude, you quit the band." So my son became the bass player. But we didn't give Mike the boot to have my son play. He was around. We didn't have a bass player. "Hey Wolfie, you want to play?" Read the entire interview from RollingStone.com.

Mike quit? That's funny. Mike never quit. He's the one person from Van Halen that I do believe what comes out of his mouth when he's interviewed. He has more class than everyone who's been in the band put together. What about Mike giving up his rights to the VH name and taking a pay cut to play on the Van Hagar tour? Mike was the only good guy in Van Halen. Sorry, Ed, you fired Mike. But Mike's in a better band now. And by the way, I own every VH album (even VHIII) and was as big of a fan as anyone. I no longer care. You fired Dave. You fired Sam. You fired Gary. You rehired Sam. You fired Mike. You rehired Dave. You hired your son. And yes, driving someone to quit is the same as firing them so yes you fired them all. Sounds like a circus to me. Anyone want to buy the entire VH catalog? It's for sale. I have no more time for this drama queen named Ed. If David Lee Roth was smart, he'd find Steve Via and Billy Sheehan and have a solo band reunion. It's time for Chickenfoot!

Yes, he was great once, and Van Halen was once a great band...but this past tour sucked....DLR can't sing and without Mikey's background voals...what is eddie going to do...play guitar, sing background and sing lead? did anyone hear "how many say i" ???? what a joke eddie van halen is

Once I saw those new songs when Sammy came back without Mike's name on it, I knew it was trouble. AC DC did the same thing to Brian Johnson but he took it across the chin to stay with the band. Mike did the same and he is a high class league above Mr Van Halen. It was obvious something was up when after years he finally started copyrighting everything that is Van Halen. He is a joke among us, how could he possibly say those things and quite frankly when Dave leaves again after he's made enough money, I'm sure their will be another two to three more books about what a backstabbing a-hole edward really is. I still love the music though. If he was a pro, he would of said that he wished Chickenfoot the best!!

So even if this is true and Mike quit the band, so what? This kind of shit happens in the music business, and unless there is some big problem, some big argument and hatred between people, you bring the guy back in for a reunion if he wants back in. I mean, who is going to be more deserving of that spot? Mike Anthony, or someone else who as never been in the band before? "all of a sudden he wants back in"? I somehow doubt it was like that. How much time has passed? And why leave out someone who was in it for that long? It just seems all very flippant to me the way it was handled. And that kind of stuff happens all the time too, real sad to see. So great. You got your reunion, sort of. More like, you reformed the band. I'm not a huge Van Halen fan to begin with, but I've listen quite a bit over the years and its a shame to see it go this way.
So, I'll just enjoy watching my Van Halen DVD's every once in a while and see Mike Anthony there, with his great big smile, wild attitude, and crazy bass solos. He's probably better off with Sammy. Sammy always seemed to have his head on pretty well anyway. The Van Halen world has always been a lot of drama.

Even if that was true, Eddie's still a spiteful asshole, not to mention a complete idiot. You're finally ready to do the reunion your fans have been awaiting for two decades, and you tell an original member to go fuck himself?!! Then, you replace him with a teenage amateur musician?!! Great move!!! Michael Anthony should feel slighted, but it's the fans who really got screwed. Van Halen no longer exists, as far as I'm concerned.

that guitar god or not, EVH is one of the most difficult people to work with. He's strikes me as one of these guys that would use the "Hey, I'm Edward Van Halen" comebacks anytime he didn't like what someone else said or did.
DLR, Sammy, Mike, even Gary Cherone have all made statement about what a shithead EVH is. Christ, the only one that stands up for Ed is his brother Alex, who coincidentally is probably as big a prick as Ed is!
DLR said it best: "Without a guitar, EVH is a pretty crummy person."

Now you have your answer, and what, it's still not good enough? Face it, the last tour ruled, and Van Halen are ready to do another record, FUCK YES! They where never this quick to put out new music with Michael Anthony. In MANY ways, we have Wolfie to thank for what we DO HAVE, and in my mind, that's fucking AWESOME! "Hey, what did Gary Cherone say about Eddie V?"
I heard Gary on a radio interview say something like it was "incredibly tense to be around EVH and AVH" and that they were "extremely critical of everyone but themselves". Gary said that, although he enjoyed his time with Van Halen, it was not easy to be in a band with Ed and Alex, and that he would not want to return to that role.

All Ed has to do is say, "Yea we coulda done a full reunion, but this was my chance to play in a band with my son."
Case closed. End of story. Like it or lump it. Say nothing else.
But whatever.
Going over to Dave's house 4 or 5 times in May! Playing new music for him. Dave's creative energies combined with Eddie's creative energies. That's all that matters. The first six albums are pure gold. "Can't Get This Stuff No More" and "Me Wise Magic" were creative and fascinating. Can't wait to hear the results of this!
While I'm impressed with the new Chickenfoot album (I already have a copy of the whole thing), Dave and Eddie together always take it to the next level - there is just a higher level of creativity there.

There is a blabbermouth asshole pecking order. All of you have your assholes ranked regardless of the topic. When did Sammy Hagar and Chickenfoot become so wonderful? Have you heard the Chickenfoot songs? Sammy fagged up Van Halen and now he's fagged up Joe Satriani. All of you presumptuous Chickenfoot lovers should be happy that Eddie and Dave will put out a new album. If it's titled Van Halen or Ed & Dave, the fact that they're gonna make music again is pretty damn cool. You guys wanna listen to shit music because Sammy & Michael Anthony are good guys and because Eddie is an asshole? Based on that most of you should throw out most of your cd collections because I've got a news flash for all of you, most popular bands have assholes in them. How many years was Ronnie James Dio known as an asshole or controlling or difficult to work with? What about Iommi? I've heard on numerous occasions that all throughout the 80's and early 90's that he was an asshole and difficult to work with. What about Ian Gillen and Ritchie Blackmore? Are all of you done with Rainbow, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath forever? What about Megadeth and Metallica? The bigger the spotilight is on a band, the more reports of being an asshole you will get......I'm just amazed at most of you for ripping a band that has EVH, Dave & Alex in it and creating new music but you'll defend a guy that sang and co-wrote songs like "How Do I Know When It's Love" and "Dreams" and "Why Can't This Be Love". I'll listen to the 2 assholes that did "Mean Street", "Unchained" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love". You "hardcore" metal heads can take Michael Anthony and the nice guy that fucked up Van Halen. Enjoy, pussies.

Except Sammy ain't so wussy on the new Chickenfoot as he was in Van Hagar. Heard the whole thing and for once he didn't piss me off.
Nonetheless, the music is everything. The soap opera is just attended to out of boredom due to having so little new music from our 70s and 80s heroes.

EVH is a punk. All he does is revisionist history. This dude has crossed every single person who's NOT related to him his whole career. He's a drunk and a crappy human being.
I'm not a Valerie Bertinelli fan but she dumped his sorry ass and cheated on him for a reason. It couldn't happen to a better guy and it'll only be a matter of time before EVH pisses everyone off.
I don't think his son has the voice or the chops but he's a good kid in that he got his dad to reunite w/ 3/4th's of the band. But it was his fucked ass that decided not to include Michael Anthony and that is something he'll make excuse after excuse for.
He's a shit of a human being and he should just dissappear and live off the legacy of the real van halen...DLR, EVH, Alex, and Michael. Hagar was a great solo artist but his Van Hagar stuff was not good at all in my book.

I'm glad to see Ed looking healthy again. And that was a huge step for him to wish Chickenfoot well. Maybe he's actually getting serious about becoming a good human again, who knows?
We all know that his take on Mikey is complete bullshit. But I've seen raging alcoholics in action before. When they treat those that care about them like shit, they tend to make themselves believe a story that isn't true but will alleviate the guilt. It's easier than admitting you were wrong. Perhaps that's what he's doing. I have hope he'll man up and take responsibility some day for the wrongs he's done to people. For now, I'm happy to see him sober because that's a start.
Let's hope VH makes some great new music. I can't regret the past too much because with Mikey out, it gave us Chickenfoot, which, judging by the music I've heard, is awesome. Great to see Sam and Mike hungry again...

Ed is meth head. Mike never quit the band. He got tired of sitting around for YEARS waiting for the sisters to get their crap together.
It's been long reported that Ed has tried many times to rid Mike of the band. Someone posted on here a while ago some excerpts form an Eddie interview in Guitar World from the early 80's whereas he said he was sick of splitting everything evenly 4 ways when Mike didn't write any of the songs (yeah, and Alex doesn't either, but Ed doesn't have a problem with that evidently). This was brought up again a few years ago when Panama was in some movie or something, and Ed had Mike's name removed from the song writing credits.
Mike said he didn't play on any of the new tunes a few years ago, yet he and Sam were still in the band.
Accordingly to Billy Sheehan, Ed approached him several times about joining the band.
Who replaced Mike's image on the band's website? Does "someone" just get in there and do it because they have nothing better to do?
Ed is an addict, and this is typical ramblings from someone who is threatened. Nobody cares about the nostaliga VH tour from last summer anymore, everything is pumped up about Chickenfoot, and it's absolutely killing Ed.

This guy is really full of himself. Sammy left because Ed's drunk ass couldn't play the right songs live. Mike went to play with Sammy instead of sitting on his ass. VH is now just like all the other bands out there with some of the original members. It's sad, because they are all still alive and can't play together. And yeah, they are one of my all time favs. Just sad, that's all.

Also, i remember that Eddie wanted no part of Mike during the 2004-5 gig, and didn't even let Mike play bass on the 3 new song released in 2004 on BofBW GH ? And about being sober, yeh right, has he looked in the mirror recently???

Just cause you maybe didn't say the words "you're fired" doesn't mean it's not your fault you diva bitch.

Long? Stupid? Why the insults? I didn't zero in on one person. You must be a big Hagar fan. Are you insinuating that I've never heard of Montrose, or HSAS, or Sammy's early solo stuff? Okay, Okay, you got me. He's been a nice guy since the seventies and put out damn good music but then sucked sweaty ass since 1985. Is that better? hetal Metal? THAT, my Sammy blowing friend, was not as long but far more stupid than my long, stupid post. I understand why you don't(can't) write something longer.....Hetal Metal.....idiot

The actual truth is that Eddie and Alex quit Van Halen and took the band name. The TRUE Van Halen got a better guitarist and drummer and a better name.

I thought that Eddie, Alex and Dave simply couldn't be around Mike because he still drinks like a fish and the other three have recently all been through rehab.....any truth to this? Any way you slice it, Mike would be a fun drunk to hang out with anyway!

no truth. at MA's last contact with EVH, EVH was still going hard, trying to break airplane windows with wine bottles...but who doesn't? Harmless fun!!
MA made the mistake of playing with Sammy while he waited for EVH. He probably felt slighted. Mike didn't have those petty ideals...then EVH said "Mike wanted to be in another band(not true, he was just jamming), and was more worried about his hot sauce, selling it at OUR shows"...so?!! Lame excuse.
Seems from what I've read through the years early on DLR was controlling of the goings on in VH. EVH went along earlier, he admits this. It might have been annoying for EVH, but professionally it worked.
Not chosing dlr or sammy, any of that stuff, but it seemed to work as far as the music was concerned...then EVH's star rose on his own, he took ownership, got sick of DLR's controling nature, got a bud in the band in Sammy. For me, that dynamic worked less musically, but to each their own...I'll take Mean Streets, DOA over Dream, Love walks in, but that's me. Or the hand holding on stage & swing each other around...the edge was gone for me....EVH, when drunk, seems bitter & paranoid. He ended up with too much control. Not as bad as the Axl story, but really right on par....just my opinion.

Oh my God.....quit the whining already! Eddie is and forever will be VAN HALEN. He has earned the right to be a complete douchbag! Bottomline is that the early era Van Halen is and always will be the ONLY VERSION OF VAN HALEN THAT EVER MATTERED!!! Eddie was the brains.......Dave was the flash. Mike was a decent player but he wasn't Geddy Lee. He had the ability to sing high notes and was a good compliment to DLR when he was singing. In my eyes it would be great if he was back but he is EASILY replaced with Wolfie. Alex holds his own as a drummer and stays quiet for the most part....so glad he is still around...even though I cant forgive him for OU812's use of electronic drum's! Sammy was and always will be the "replacement guy" so all you slighted Van Hagar fans DEAL WITH IT! I liked Cherone but lets be honest this ain't Extreme.
Anyone can spend $$ on a cd/mp3 etc and call themselves a fan. IMO when Dave left it was over. All the life and energy was sucked out of the room and VH became just another pop band with a shredding axeman. There was no "X factor" anymore. Eddie's creativity went flat and he went for the cash grab for those Hagar days. Moreover, please dont talk to me about record sales cause Brittany Spears, Pink and Fergie sell lots of records and that doesn't necessarily make it GOOD MUSIC! I am not doubting they sold records after Dave but if you dont understand where I am going here read the aforementioned again for clarification.
When any of you soap-box surfers sell millions of records, can shred like none other and tour the world come and preach your sermon; until then quit whining and listen to what you like.

I am looking forward to see what these two will write together!
You guys do realise that DLR and EVH together wrote the six pack.
The only thing that matters to me is what hey will create. It would be great to have MA back, but hey he's happy with Satch, Hagar, and Smith. The Cfoot is a big sound, not sure how i feel about it though....

I wonder what color the sky is in King Edwards world? He seems to live his own sort of alternate reality, and surrounds himself with those who support that reality. Kind of like Axl Rose.
Someone needs to tell the King he has no clothes before he is the only one left from the VH that we all cared about.

He ain't the King, remember. He is a God.
"Eddie, this is not the first time you've been called a god. But what did it feel like when you heard Spike wanted to give you the Guitar God Award — the first ever? Well, it's a little overwhelming, I guess. I mean, who ever would have thought? I was seven years old when we came to America with my mom, my dad, my brother with 50 bucks and a piano. Who ever would have thought I would be a guitar god, you know? If I'm a guitar god, then my son would be Jesus, right? That means on the next tour, he'd have to walk on water."

as a matter of fact Riot Act, let me count the ways that I am better than EVH. I'll conceed the guitar, and possibly the quantity of alcohol consumed, but the bitter old bloated meth freak can be bettered at at least 10 things:
1. rodeo clowning - I guarantee I can escape a raging bull better. 2. getting along w/others - a staple in my repotoire since 2nd grade, my teachers told me so. Not Ed's strong point. 3. teeth - EVH's teeth have nothing on George Washington's. 4. calming the most jittery squirrel - I can calm that crazy guy Painkiller that posts, I can calm any beast. 5. cleaner lungs - I can guarantee you this Riot Act. 6. graciosness - this guy is jealous of any guitarist & finds the need to put down all the greats at one point or another. he's trashed Jimi, Page, Nugent, derringer, angus...that's just a couple off the top of my head.
I feel bad now, he's really not what we thought.

blame everyone else. I'm sure your drinking there Ed and your personality when drinking had nothing to do with anyone leaving. You always talk about all this music you write all the time yet every ex member of Van Halen even including Roth when he was out all said you never wanted to get together and make new music. People wonder what they'll create together............let me tell you.........ZIP. Because that will be the time heads butt and everyone gets pissy again. Not too mention I'm pretty sure all these guys are quite removed from anyting remotely related to music of today. The edge they had 30 years ago isn't there and nothing they can do will make that come back in there writing process.

..I am a D.J. in the NorthShore of Massachusetts, and I did a gig this weekend at a pub and there were about 125 people there, well I asked about Van Halen and tried this, I played "Dance the Night Away" and asked people to dance and sing, and yeah it was a modest amount of people, but when I played "Why Can't This Be Love" the whole place went into a craze and people were dancing and screaming and singing along to the song like I was playing Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" well guess what beside that song at the end of the night I will start playing "Why Can't This Be Love" from now on, becuase the 20-30ish crowd is way into the Hagar-Era Van Halen.
