METALLICA's JAMES HETFIELD Explains Why DAVE MUSTAINE 'Had To Go' - June 3, 2009
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield was interviewed for the July 2009 issue of U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine. A few excerpts from the lengthy chat follow below.

Classic Rock: Were you glad to see the back of [former METALLICA guitarist and current MEGADETH leader] Dave Mustaine?

Hetfield: I don't know if "glad" is the right word, but it was necessary. There would have been myself, Lars [Ulrich, drums] and him all trying to drive and it would have been this triangulated mess. It's obvious that he had the same drive as us — he went on to do great things in MEGADETH. The way things are now, the character dynamics, Lars and I are one half of the scale with Rob [Trujillo, bass] and Kirk [Hammett, guitar] on the other. They're great idea people but very good at being okay with someone else driving. It does take that, I think. They're very un-ego-driven and Lars and I are the other way, it seems. That's what I've been told. [Laughs] So back then Dave had to go.

Classic Rock: In "Some Kind Of Monster", he seems fairly unhappy about that.

Hetfield: He's an amazing, talented person. Maybe just part of his character is having a chip on his shoulder. If I got kicked out of METALLICA, I would have one too. Ron McGovney, our first bass player — very big chip on his shoulder. They're never able to really be comfortable in the now, and that's tough to see. Lars did say that too in the interview: "Can't you see what you've done?" But none of that matters because he's chasing something unreachable.

Classic Rock: Were you uncomfortable with the band's new image for "Load"?

Hetfield: Most definitely. Lars and Kirk drove on those records. The whole "We need to reinvent ourselves" topic was up. Image is not an evil thing for me, but if the image is not you, then it doesn't make much sense. I think they were really after a U2 kind of vibe, Bono doing his alter ego.

I couldn't get into it. The whole, "Okay, now in this photoshoot we're going to be '70s glam rockers." Like, what? I would say half — at least half — the pictures that were to be in the booklet, I yanked out. The whole cover thing, it went against what I was feeling.

Classic Rock: What didn't you like about the cover?

Hetfield: [Laughs] How can I put this? I guess when I talked [earlier in the interview] about the resentments of being left out of the bond that they had through their drug use — Lars and Kirk were very into abstract art, pretending they were gay. I think they knew it bugged me. It was a statement around all that. I love art, but not for the sake of shocking others. I think the cover of "Load" was just a piss-take around all that. I just went along with the make-up and all of this crazy, stupid shit that they felt they needed to do.

Classic Rock: A lot was made of the haircuts at the time. Was that a group decision?

Hetfield: [Laughs] It wasn't like we went in together and went, "Hey, can we get a deal on four haircuts?" It just slowly happened, with age, thinning hair. Long hair just didn't feel right anymore.

Classic Rock: Musically, was that the first time METALLICA was unsure?

Hetfield: I would say so. That whole period. Why do we need to reinvent ourselves? A lot of the fans got turned off quite a bit by the music, but mostly, I think, by the image.

Classic Rock: Were you uneasy about Kirk and Lars kissing in the photographs?

Hetfield: Totally. That's why they did it. I'm the driving force behind their homosexual adventures. I think drugs had something to do with it too. I hope. [Laughs] There are many times in our career that people have jumped ship, and that's going to happen. It's more hurtful to hear, "Okay, people are stomping METALLICA records because they're suing Napster."

I think he's sincere, but of course he couldn't have said that back in the day when they were promoting their new style.

that said, i surely got disappointed by the image but the actual let down feel was caused by the music itself.

A very unique and strong attempt at "reinventing" their sound with their other musical influences. Much better than "black album" I think.

But the image sucked, of course. And "Reload" was unbelieveably bad. And it makes sense since it's all leftovers. It was just a quick cash in - the biggest mistake of their whole career, even worse than St. Anger.

EXACTLY what I've been saying for years... Even if Mustaine hadn't gotten kicked out, he would have left eventually.... Mustaine is obviously too driven and too talented to be content sharing songwriting credits with James and Lars and doing the types of compromising that's required in those situations.

At this point I would rather be Dave in Megadeth then Metallica. Megadeth is still relevant and not just living off their past. If Metallica would have just quit music after The Black Album, they might have been remembered in the same vain as Led Zeppelin or The Beatles. Look what Axl is doing to Guns N' Roses. Kenny Rodgers said it best, "You gotta know when to fold."

Hetfield is showing some class, but the bottom line is why keep talking about this, and why do interviewers feel the need to continually discuss. enjoyed reading it...at first glance I thought, isn't this old news but it's really a lot clearer than any discussion on the subject - ever! It was always said that it was the alcohol but w/ the way they were all drinking, it came off VERY hypocritical to me and it didn't make much sense. The Ego-thing makes all the sense in the world though. I'm sure alcohol usage was worse w/ Mustaine at the time than with Lars and Hetfield but things are clearer now.

Big props to James for taking the high road and for being honest on the load/reload crap. St. Anger was worse than those two albums put together though. Probably the worst metal album ever put out. Lars sounded like he was beating on trash cans. Hetfields voice sounded like an imitator trying to do karaoke with his voice. The riffs were not catchy and there were no solos to speak of. I think the high school marching band could have put out a better metal album than Metallicas St. Garbage.

Death Magnetic was a very good cd except for "The Unforgiven Part 3" titled song. Don't get me wrong...the song is very good but to attach themselves back to albums that were so bad by titling one song "Unforgiven" was just stupid and someone should kick Rick Ruben in the ass for not putting his foot down on that one. Maybe he couldn't and James and Lars decided on it alone, but this was not smart at all. It also allowed for the haters of Load/Re-load era (of which there are many-me included) to discount the album as a repeat of past failures which "Death Magnetic" is not.

On the title of that song alone, I've come across people that won't even listen to their new stuff.

And yes, it happened 20 years ago, but it's like RRHOF reset the clock. This will NEVER die. Think about how unique a situation this is. A band fires a principal member in the band's infancy, before any recognition whatsoever, and both bands go on to nearly-unrivaled success. What are the odds in that? Interesting to read the Load comments, it does seem that Metallica are trying to distance themselves more and more from their shit period of 1995-2003 ( I`m not a huge fan of TBA but it`s a solid metal album ).

Beacause people love hearing about it - it will never get old for many, many people because the issue of Dave Mustaine's dismissal from the band STILL hasn't been resolved by the parties involved. Dave is still incredibly bitter while Lars and James are still incredulous about it all.

Dave hasn't sold out? Let's see:

Same polished sound metallica went for(Countdown and onward)

"Crush em", a fucking wrestling anthem.

Numerous MTV things.

Oh, and they did "clean up" a touch too. Junior cut his hair, and Dave and Marty had significantly shorter styles around the cyptic writings record.

And you know what, that doesn't have anything to do with anything. They have both made a lot of great music, with some shitty stuff thrown in the middle(IMO more crap from megadave).

On the topic of hair:

Lars with the obvious receding hairline.

Kirk got thin through the whole crown of his head, and has admitted to using rogain.

James got the little monkey's ass patch(top back of head) area thinning out. You can see it thinner as far back as the load tours, but he may have done something about it(rogaine or transplant surgery) cause it looks a little thicker back there now.

Why is this news? Because James has rarely discussed in detail that kind of stuff about Dave. It has been mentioned, but not much by James. I recall him saying he was uncomfortable with some of the load era stuff, but not in detail like in this interview.

Frankly, Kirk Hemmett is probably a musical drag on the band, and Ulrich is one of those people you have in a band, despite his not being much of a musician, because he can make the business side of things happen. But one pays a price--and a very big price at that.

Ulrich and Hemmett kissing--clearly the most notable thing either will ever do. And they know it.

First. It's Nice that One CAN Admit to Their Own Ego & Homophobic Issues. I Just Wish this Could've Happened Sooner to Save the Relationship with "Jason" No Diss on "RT" but In MY Opinion "Jason's" a Better Fit In All Areas.
As For the Look of the Band During The Load & ReLoad Era... Ah- It Wasn't Totally MY cup of tea (I've Been a Follower Since The "Metal up Your Ass/Kill 'Em All- Days") But... So What! Bands Do Stranger Shit. I Think the Music Done During That Period was GOOD. As Opposed to the "St. Anger & Death Magnetic" Albums which Kind of Has Metallica Capitulating to the New 2000's Just Bang Loud Cuz You Don't Have The Chops Style, Which Metallica Does Have and Didn't NEED to Do That! Also as a Fellow Singer/Songwriter/Writer & Producer. To All the Limp Dicks Here Doggin' "Load & ReLoad" You Probably Can't Even Write a Song Nor Sing One to Save You Life If ‘Ya Had Too. If You Actually-, LISTEN-, To These Albums …There's Some Killer Shit on Them. And Kirks Guitar Playing IS ON Point. That's Why He's Influenced and Still Influences, All players Young and Old. (The Dude IS a Student of Music and Continues to Learn MORE Classical, Blues & Baroque Techniques, Etc. and If you Listen to Metallicas’ Intros & Outros Etc. Throughout Their Musical Careers-, You'll Hear It. More Guitarists Should take Note and do The SAME, Cuz "Real" Guitar Playing is Atrophying in Today’s Modern Day Pop Rock Crap Society!)
So... In Conclusion Yeah It's an Older Topic to Rehash, but It's Part of Metallicas’ Legacy. And It WILL- Come Up Again as long as They Continue to Play and Be Relevant or Alive and Give Interviews. The Dudes Are Friggin’ Metal/Rock Legends for Pete’s Sake.
They Still Prod Paul McCartney about Him & Johns Relationship, Etc. So Give the Bithcin' a Rest. And as John Lennon Would Say ...Let it Be. Thus I'm Speaking Those Words of Wisdom... So, Let It Be!

I'd give Death Magnetic 4 out of 5 stars.

The production on the other hand...I'd give the production 1 out of 5 stars. The production is very distorted in parts. For being a Rick Ruben production it's very poorly produced and it sounds dirty all the way through. It seems like the distortion pedal was turned all the way up on all the intros and the finished product sounds like a radio when it's not exactly tuned to the right channel. Very scratchy. I don't know who mixed it but the mix was bad and the only "clean" sounding part of it is the intro to "Day that Never Comes" until it speeds up and gets clogged by the scratchyness.

Great music though but hopefully they can remix it someday so what's supposed to sound clean, actually does.

If their intent was for the finished product to sound like a needle on a very dusty record, then mission accomplished I guess. I personally thought it got in the way of the sound.

Typical for a non-musician to make such an unfounded speculation. Aside from his detailed lead work (I don’t care if anyone thinks it’s good or not), Hammett has/does provide a great deal of good riffs in Metallica. Just as an example, Kirk’s best riffs are on Master of Puppets (no surprise). That main riff in “Puppets” is Kirk. That badass finger riff in “My Apocalypse” is Kirk…and then of course there are the money riffs he’s responsible for: “Enter Sandman” and the main melodic riff in “The Unforgiven”. Yeah, he’s a drag

I could go on, but I made my point.

And musically, I’m sorry, but no way Jason can contribute something as awesome as Rob did on DM…the flamenco stuff that got used by James & Kirk….or that intricate staccato part he brought to “The Day That Never Comes” that they all play. That stands out for me.

Hetfield: [Laughs] It wasn't like we went in together and went, "Hey, can we get a deal on four haircuts?" It just slowly happened, with age, thinning hair. Long hair just didn't feel right anymore.

Dave was a angry drunk and druggie and always got into fights with James. That is the story.

Why the fuck should James apologize? Please explain why?

James: Hey Dave, sorry that you punched me for no goddamn good reason. Sorry you were a drugged out burnout who played like shit on stage.

Get the fuck out of here with that weak ass shit!

As for the Lars & Kirk are gay shit, they trump that bullshit by being married to and banging super models (and fathering children with them), not to mention the countless groupies (especially Lars) they banged back in the day. Yeah, I'll take their gay lives over all of you losers. They've had more pussy than any of you have even seen in all your late night strokin' to porn festivities.

To me, It seems like the most confortable guy in the band in the Load era was James. And there is more good songs on Load and Reload than in Shit Anger and Death Magnetic.

Christ, he said they all had egos and were extremely driven. Nota that Dave was the most driven. Fuckin tards making up shit.

Dave had a personality clash(ego) AND was an angry and violent drunk. Yes, they were all alcoholics at the time. But when you have three happy drunks, and one fucker throwing punches, that is the dude that goes. I stopped partying with people who did stupid shit when they were fucked up too. Who wants to be around that shit?

You still got people here griping about Dave's superiority. Yet none of those people bring up his crap music.

Great: peace sells, rust in peace, countdown, youthanasia.

Good: killing is my business(great playing, not much by memorable tunes though), so far so good, TWNAH, TSHF, United Abominations.

Poor: Cryptic writings(minus a couple of songs), Risk

Dave is not infallible. Neither are James and Lars. I'm just sick of the mountaintop people put Dave on.

I thought Dave was a drunk? Bullshit excuse it turns out becuase none of them can handle a fucking drink these days. I always said Dave was too much of a personality for Metallica.

James is just as bad-ass as Mustaine. Great interview...props to the interviwer from Classic Rock! The Metallica/Mustaine rivalry is probably the most entertaining thing in metal.

I'd love to see Mustaine create a festival bigger than Ozzfest and have Metallica open for Dave some day.

Hopefully Lars has pissed off enough people now with his obvious influence on the mixing of DM and the disaster SA album that they will finally start to fade and let MegaDave's album sales get really close to Metallica's!

Why would I be bitter? Silly lad, calling out dumb ass blabberbitches does not require bitterness. The only prerequisite is a strong intolerance of ignorance.

Mustaine should be happy he was kicked out before he'd see a photo of himself kissing Lars while he was too stoned to remember it.
