DAVID LEE ROTH's 'DLR Band' Album Available On iTunes For First Time
- June 5, 2009
Wawazat!! Records and Red Stripe Plane Music have announced the long-anticipated release of "DLR Band", the fifth full-length studio album by David Lee Roth (VAN HALEN), via iTunes.
"DLR Band" was recorded and mixed in ten days, a technique Roth had not utilized since 1979's "Van Halen II". John Lowery (a.k.a. John 5 of ROB ZOMBIE and MARILYN MANSON fame) and Mike Hartman played guitar on the record. Hartman actually performed double duty on the LP, having also laid down the bass guitar tracks under the "B'ourbon Bob" pseudonym.
"DLR Band" met with favorable reviews upon release, especially in comparison to Roth's previous two solo efforts (1991's "A Li'l Ain't Enough" and 1994's "Your Filthy Little Mouth"). However, with little promotion and limited distribution from David's own smaller label, the album failed to make a significant mark commercially. Further hurting the LP's sales was Roth's inexplicable reluctance to embark on a support tour. In fact, Roth did not hit the road to promote the album until several months into 1999, often in sporadic increments.
Both John Lowery and Mike Hartman failed to join Roth's band for the "DLR Band" support tour, leaving Roth to find yet another guitarist. The singer chose Bart Walsh, a Los Angeles player who had previously performed as a part of the VAN HALEN tribute band THE ATOMIC PUNKS.
"DLR Band" track listing:
01. Slam Dunk! (David Lee Roth, John Lowery, Bob Marlette) 02. Blacklight (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 03. Counter-Blast (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 04. Lose the Dress (Keep The Shoes) (Roth, Terry Kilgore) 05. Little Texas (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 06. King of the Hill (Roth, Mike Hartman) 07. Going Places (Roth, Kilgore) 08. Wa Wa Zat!! (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 09. Relentless (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 10. Indeedido (Roth, Hartman) 11. Right Tool for the Job (Roth, Kilgore) 12. Tight (Roth, Kilgore) 13. Weekend With the Babysitter (Roth, Lowery, Marlette) 14. Black Sand (Roth, Kilgore)

It was a really solid album. More than a few kick ass cuts like Slam Dunk, Black Light and the surprisingly atmospheric Black Sand. I think he's a very underrated rocknroll lyricist. Unfortunately, his schtick ofter overshadowed this quite often. The haters don't have a clue!

I love all the excuses as to why it didn't sell then so what makes you think it will sell now?face it nothing he did solo compares with what Sammy does or what he did in vh.whine all you want about how you think Van Hagar sucked, nothing sucked worse than roth's solo carrer.I bought the shit thinking it would be like getting 2 vh albums a year since he was always bragging about how he wrote half of the vh songs.they sucked compared to what he did in vh and to what they did with Sammy. hands down Van Hgar is a 100 tines better than his solo shit.now be prepared tp be further enbarassed dave as Sammy unleashes chickenfoot while you are still acting like it's 1984.

The DLR album had some good stuff on it, but take a look at that album cover. Maybe one of the worst ones ever.... REALLY ?

"metalhead43" returns!
Although I see by your email addy, that you're "metalhead48" now? Still bitter over DLR passing you up for a blowjob back in the day I see, and still posting the same pro-Sammy drivel. You're going to need to face the facts, and that fact is that what DLR did with just 5 solo albums, Sammy still hasn't accomplished with... um, how many solo albums and different bands? Hell, Eat 'em and Smile alone topples *Sammy's entire career* and what's even funnier, is that Sammy even knows this. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Sammy, glad to see him still doin' it and trying to kick out some fresh music, and I hope Chickenfoot rules, but if you're going to compare him to DLR, sorry, but DLR wins.
Anyway, all I really wanted to do, was put my 2 cents in about the DLR Band album- what a sleeper, very underrated. I put it in recently for the first time in a while, and it has stood the test of time quite well, it doesn't sound dated by any means. I really hope people notice this on the ITMS that haven't heard it before and try it out.
COMMENT | What are you kidding me this album suck big time. posted by : vanhagar 6/5/2009 8:09:59 PM
It's as bad as some of the Hagar solo stuff after he was with Van Halen the second time, but Sammy had some really great solo stuff, it's just that Roth never did anything like Van Halen. His stuff just wasn't any good, a lot of second rate crap. Even "Eat em and Smile", Awwh it isn't even worth argueing with you brown nosed DLR loversanyways.
But when Dave gets his willy out of your asses then you will realize he sucks.

Good album. I found it used a few years ago. Slam Dunk and a few other tunes on it are great

I feel sorry for you or anybody who thinks roth outside of vh is better than Sammy.if you realy think his solo stuff is better than Sammy's or Van Hagar then you are beyond hope.if he was/is so great then why did he fall off the planet in the late 80's and 90's?answer because nobody cared!if they did then he would not have released the dlr cd on his own would he? why am I wasting time with an idiot who goes by the name bungole anyway?

Ray Luzier does a hell of a job on this one! He played the old VH solid as hell live as well.

If you enjoy stereotypical bullshit rock songs with the word 'love' in them then you're a Sammy fan (and probabley a Journey fan and a Toto fan and a Boston fan and a Kansas fan). Faceless, sterile pop rock. Sammy was inspired in Montrose and the first 2 VH albums were passable but after that....ugh!!! I mean, please listen to Balance from start to finish if you can....Eat em and Smile, Skyscraper and DLR band wipe the floor with that crap! Dave is much more creative and eccentric which for me was and is waaaay more entertaining. And Roth's lyrics are sooooo much better than Sammy's. Sammy does have an impressive wail though....I will give him that.

Journey's Infinity, Boston's first two albums, and everything Kansas did until Steve Walsh left are all better than anything Dave ever did on his own. If you've got a problem with Sammy, you don't have to slam everything played on the radio in 1978 to make your point.

The Tonight Show with Conan O'brien.
Need I say more, Alan.
Oh Yeah !
Dave was probably sitting in his livingroom doing nothing waiting, because Eddie isn't ready yet, after writing numerous albums of new material?
Your supporting the wrong act, get out of the past and into the present.
Do something with your life.
Peace, and may the Foot be with you !

For all the Sammy Lovers : Brittany Spears and Pink sell crazy amounts of records...does it mean its good ? No, it means it popular....... So here we have yet another ass-hat of a Hagar fan trying to justify record sales with which band version is most relevant. Get a grip and read the following: DLR fronted VH is the ONLY ONE THAT WILL EVER MATTER !
