Obviously with this line up, the music is going to be top knotch, BUT....I dunno..im not sure what it is, or why, but Sammy is kinda shitting me. I appreciate the guys vocal talent, but I have to say he has always been a terrible lyricist IMO...i mean, what is he now.? 60? Must be close too it, and hes still singin about chicks and cars and sexual innuendo's.... I dunno, its just getting a bot boring and tedious these days. I know its all about fun and its just a rock band but I always hear Sammy singing about the same old same old. Hes got a great voice, no doubt about it, but I think im just OVER the same lyrics about the same old subjects year in year out..anyway, whatever, its just a song right? Good luck to them anyway, at least hes still putting out music, unlike Ed who just wants to carry on like a drunken old twat.

Kind of a super group. Chad Smith's shirt was awesome. We had just seen Land of the Lost and the movie sucked because of Will Farrell.
Anyway, cool that Satriani gave Conan the guitar.

"Chad Smith isn't wearing a backwards baseball cap!!!!!!!!"
There was a funny bit earlier in the show where Conan brought out all the kids conceived and birthed during his tenure as the host of The Late show, because Leno did that during his last show. All the kids came out wearing red wigs (even a few black kids - which was silly). So that explains Chad's wig.

I can't really say anthing bad about Mike.... 30 years in the biz...... Joe, so influencial in ways that we can only imagine.... chad.. 20+ years and then there's Sammy.... 35+ years... not bad. enough of the Sammy bashing!his lyrics are simple and stupid, right they don't match up to the great lyrics to vh songs like jump, panama right?or the awesome solo songs from roth like oh wait a min. can't think of any of his songs but I am sure tey are bono like in thier signifgance right?as for chickenfoot it can't hold a candle to the new van halen right?oh wait there isn't a new one cause eddie only talks about writing all these great songs without you know actualy recording any of them. maybe he is still waiting on roth to come up with those great lyrics of his, jump 2 anybody?me wise magic yea poetry right there baby, what a joke!Sammy rules and dave drools!if you were one of those people stupid enough to pay for the reunion tour because you were not around the first time I feel sorry for you.you paid to much and it was NOT the orignal line up!plus you had to sit thru a washed up roth ramble in between songs. it was bad enough the first time around when you would sit there thinking enough already shut up and sing another song!at least he could sing then.

This is at its core is 70's hard rock, throughout that decade there were so many great bands that got lost in today's short term "bring on the next trend" market. The bands from the 70's offered an extension of what had been established in the 60's, a purity in the approach & playing of the music players like Peter Frampton, Robin Trower or Frank Marino for example were the gods of that time.
Its a shame that there are so many comments on here that just miss what the "point" of this music is, you are really missing out on some amazing stuff.

Why would more than 1 or 2 haters post on this thread? If you don't like it get lost don't post and let us Van Halen fans and Chickenfoot fans enjoy a little of what is left of rock and roll today. BSlash43 yeh you complain about lyric, well what do you want #1 hit lyric to make the band popular like Van Haeln use to be with Roth and Hagar, and be part of the corparate world you hate so much. These were just plain lyrics from a band of great musicians having fun, sing good old rock and roll. So give it a break and wuit posting aka and double hater posting.

The only time this guy hasn't annoyed the shit out of me was when he was in Montrose. I'm not sure how to explain it properly but he just has this air of fake a douche bag about him. While some people think Sammy is one of the coolest guys in rock he comes across to me as the guy in high school who tried too hard to fit in. I like his singing voice but his lyrics annoy me and so does his stage persona. I have heard a handful pf tracks from the Chickenfoot album and they are good. Not anything ground breaking. Nothing really memorable either but good jams for the summer at least.

but I cranked this up in my car as I was on my way to Long and McQuade this morning. not a huge fan of flashy guitar players, either, but I could get into this. The song they played on Conan didn't do it justice; the album version is great. And given how PJ sounded on Monday, I think there might be some sound issues with that studio.
Just like all the other non-haters on here, it's good old fun RNR. Fantastic for listening to on the way to the beach, or sitting on the deck with a cooler full o beer. Good stuff.
I'd take Van Hager over DLR ANY DAY.

I certainly appreciate that Rock n Roll is about Cars, Girls, Parties and all that, but I think Sonic Titan hit the nail on the head with his post....I wish Chickenfoot and Sammy all the best, but if Sammy would just mix things up A LITTLE for god sake, maybe I wouldnt be cringing so much everytime I hear him sing.

Sounds like what would have come after Balance, part of the natural decline of Sammy era VH, with each album getting progressively worse. I guess the point is to just have fun, but Jesus, this couldn't be any more irrelevant to 2009. Even the solo sounded uninspired. Great musicians, but to me this sounds like a rehash of Mas Tequila which was some miserable shit. Same kind of gimmicky chorus. I dunno. This was disappointing. I was hoping for some sort of originality.

And to those of you bashing Sammy's lyrical abilities, give the entire album a listen before judging. I think only "Oh Yeah" and "Soap on a Rope" feature the traditional Hagar cheese. "So I'm guessing that Michael Anthony ISN'T the one who wrote all of those amazing vocal harmonies in VH."
-handsolo
Well it is well known that Dave was a huge part of the songwriting process. Yes, Eddie wrote the riffs but Dave arranged and wrote all of the vocal melodies and harmonies and of course the lyrics. Never mind he orchestrated the image of the band and even directed their videos. Notice that the swing and swagger of the VH beat left with Dave?
Chickenfoot has alot of talent, but I dunno...

Sorry folks, Sammy's voice is in fine form and he can still scream. And his stage presence is fine. Not goofy like in 1986. And I love Dave but his hair was too short and stage performance too restrained, and with the forced smile, on the 07/08 tour. Yet, he had his magic moments.
The real problem is Satch. The riff for "Oh Yeah" is way too pedestrian and he doesn't move around enough. Makes you miss Eddie's magic and stage enegy. Even Stevie Vai took more risks and created more interesting riffs and songs on Eat Em And Smile. Eddie's and Vai's solos blow Satch's away here. He just isn't letting loose. All those years wanting to do the band thing someday and he is restrained and playing it safe. He should be exploding.
That said "Oh Yeah" is one of the best songs on the album. The catchy "My Kinda Girl" would have been better for national TV.
The lyrics ain't cheesy. They have some classic blues elements and atmosphere - and Hagar is loose and not straining. The lyrics actually sound cool and like they were written by Diamond Dave.
And Mikey and Dave did not write the harmonies or vocal lines or melodies on the first 6 albums. Eddie did. Dave was in control and vetoed a lot of shit and shaped the band sound and image for sure! And wrote all the cool lyrics.

Yea, and writing the music isn't the same as writing the vocal melodies and harmonies. When Eddie performed "Panama" on the David Letterman show in '85 Shafer did the vocal melody on the keyboard, which Eddie wrote. That takes nothing away from Dave's contribution of cool lyrics, style of delivery and his veto power, shaping of the music, band image and visuals. Pavarotti and Elvis did not write the music they sang either. Takes nothing away from the artistry. Eddie is the musician.
All the Who's music was written by Pete Townson. Motley Crue's by Nikki Sixx. Yet, it takes all members to be a band and give the music its style and character. The musician who writes and performs their own music is a recent phenomena in the history of music, really kicked off my the great Bod Dylan.

You are wrong, Dave wrote his own vocal melodies and wrote the vocal harmonies as well and wrote the lyrics and helped arrange and even came up with a change or two musically.
I read a qoute from Dave himself. You can take that up with him if you want, but this is according to Dave.
Look I am a song writer, and I write entire songs by myself all of the time(and have been doing do for many many years(well over 18 years of writing either with people or on my own), and I write them by myself(sometimes everyday I write something) so I have more than understanding of song writing. I can also colaborate with people when it comes to writing no problem, or sit back and let someone else do it depending upon the cirteria of the situation.
