Will KISS' Next Album Be A WAL-MART Exclusive?
- June 6, 2009
|
|
According to NWAnews.com, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, co-founders of the rock band KISS, made a surprise stop at the at the 39th annual Wal-Mart shareholders meeting Friday (June 5) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, fueling speculation that the next KISS album will be a Wal-Mart exclusive. Though they didn't perform, a camera crew from Simmons' A&E TV show "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" followed him around Bud Walton Arena. There has been no official confirmation of a KISS deal with Wal-Mart, although artists such as THE EAGLES and AC/DC have both issued recent albums exclusively through the giant retailer. In addition, AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry may have inadvertently let it slip that the band's next studio album will come out exclusively through Wal-Mart. When asked in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the album being delayed by Perry's and singer Steven Tyler's medical problems, Perry replied, "This is about the third time I've had to make excuses why the record isn't out. You line everything up just right: Brendan O'Brien producing, Wal-Mart and Sony screaming for the record, tour coming up, and there's no record. We're still in shock that it's not happening." Whereas Best Buy's exclusive deal for GUNS N' ROSES' "Chinese Democracy" involved a marketing campaign centered solely on the album, Wal-Mart saw AC/DC's "Black Ice" as a way to sell more than music. The company hawked AC/DC T-shirts and an exclusive AC/DC version of MTV Networks' Rock Band videogame. "As we looked at AC/DC's loyal fan base, that's when this idea came about: How do we pull in the music with other things?" Gary Severson, Wal-Mart's senior vice president for entertainment and electronics, told The Wall Street Journal in a December 2008 interview. "Some artists allow you that opportunity." In a recent interview with Wags & Elliott of the Columbus, Ohio radio station QFM96, Gene Simmons stated about KISS' forthcoming CD, "[It's the] first studio album in 11 years. And you can't force those things — either it's in your blood and it's happening or... This is, I have to say... this might be the best new record we've done since 'Destroyer'. In fact, it has a similar sound — 'Rock And Roll Over'-meets- 'Love Gun' kind of a record. That's coming out in September/October, and then we're gonna be doing a 60-city American tour."

I don't think anyone would be surprised to see the new KI$$ album distributed exclusively by Walmart. Walmart shoppers range from kiddies to seniors, and since KI$$ is now targeting an "all ages" audience, it makes perfect sense.
Plus, $tanley and $immon$ can flood the aisles of Walmart with all of their other crappy KI$$ merchandise: "Attention Walmart shoppers! Today, in aisle 10, we have a special on KI$$ tampons, buy one and get the new KI$$ album for free!"

As much as I hate the "Scab Era" Kiss. Hooking up with Wal-Mart, Best Buy etc. is a very good move. It worked well for the Eagles and AC/DC...not so much for GnR....
Let's face it. Most people who care about a new Kiss album ( or Eagles, AC/DC, GnR, Aerosmith etc) don't usually head down to HMV or their local record store.
Plus, the casual Kiss fan who has no idea it's not the "original" Kiss. Maybe out getting a garden hose, see the new disc and think..."I used to really be into these guys, I think I'll check it out".
Eventhough I hate Kiss' merchandising / marketing overkill, selling exclusively thru Wal-mart is a very good idea.

And that's what KI$$ is all about, merchandising and marketing overkill!
In a related story, a consumer warning was issued today. The KI$$ tampons and the new KI$$ album are not interchangable products! Female consumers are advised against attempting to insert the new KI$$ CD into anything but their CD player. ;-)

FOR YOU TO TURN YOUR BACK ON KISS AFTER 34 YEARS IS A DOWN-RIGHT SHAME.
ACE WAS A DRUNK AND PETER IS OLD AND CAN'T PLAY. DID YOU EXPECT KISS TO "QUIT" CAUSE TWO OF THE FOUR FOUNDING MEMBERS ARE USELESS AS SHIT?
WOULD YOU RATHER NO KISS AT ALL. THAT WOULD BE FAIRLY SELFISH IF YOU SAID YES.

I'm thinking there will be more free downloads of this than actual sales. & I'm thinking that most of the free down loaders will not go out & buy it after hearing it, but they will delete it & try to forget the experience!

The new KISS album will do well at Wal-Mart. As much as you haters think it will tank, we all know it will move at least 500,000 copies, which is very sucessful these days. Another gold disc for KISS....I know that just tears you haters up inside. Could be platinum. Anyway, get some new material for your bashing because there will be lots of KISS news on blabbermouth during the next year. Rock on KISS!!!

I think it is a good move. No matter what KISS does they are going to be put down for it . Who cares ! They are doing what they want and making money hand over fist so what the hell is wrong with that. If you done like them then don't listen to them. I for one am a life long fan and don't buy everything they put out but if it catches my eye then I buy it for my collection. They are not hurting anyone doing what they do so leave it at that. As for Eric and Tommy, they are awsome at what they do and bring a new life to KISS. Can't wait to see them in Halifax because that city needs a good kick in the ass to wake up and get some good bands in there. KISS will do that for sure.

cool, lots more ki$$ posts to bash them when the album is released, when it tanks, and when $tanley and $immon$ have to finally admit what everyone else already knows - ki$$ is over!

I find it very pathetic that rock n roll is now all about exclusive releases through ultra-corporate, mega-retailers.
That is SOOO un-rock n roll. Talk about cheapening the image of an art form that used to require street cred. Now it's all about teaming up with mammoth retailers and pushing real record stores even further out of the picture.
What's next? Is Metallica going to do a deal where their merchandise is only available at THE GAP?
Yippy, I can't wait for the day when Slayer gear is only available through JC Penney.

It's a reflection of the times. KI$$ is just like every other corporation - they exist to earn income for themselves. $tanley and $immon$ have not been interested in "rock and roll" credibility for decades. The saddest part is that fans of rock and roll still think that what $tanley and $immon$ represent IS "rock and roll".
Many of the bands that use to be "rock and roll" are now cashing in on their past gloy days at their fans' expense. KI$$ is no different.

Get over the fact that the druggie (Ace) and the worlds worst drummer (Peter) are not in Kiss anymore! Personally Ace is way overrated and sloppy as hell. Peter was never any good at all, just serviceable. Every guitarist and drummer that Kiss has had since those two clowns have been better. I personally will purchase it whether its a Walmart exclusive or available in any store just to hear what it sounds like. I did not like Psycho Circus that much so I don't have much hope but I am willing to give them a chance.

It's actually is really weird how many people here just say how much whatever is happening on here sucks so much. Really...it's just an article about Kiss releasing the new stuff thru Wal-Mart.
I think it's a good move on Kiss' part. It will sell well. I will buy one...although Ace and Peter will be missed.
Someone else said something about Ace and Peter starting a new band. I think that sounds like a cool idea. Try to blow Kiss away.

Pantera classic? Perhaps... anyway, being the Pantera fan you are, I'm sure you realize they probably wouldn't exist had it not been for KISS. Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell have proclaimed over and over again that KISS was/is their favorite band and that Ace was Dimebag's inspiration for playing guitar.

Just out of curiousity, why was the reunion show "with the scabs" the last for you? While I wouldn't support KI$$ by going to see "scab KI$$", I'm curious as to why you didn't like the show.

Because they became a caricature of themselves. The farwell show was the same show as the reunion show, which I saw, and as the 1998 tour which I saw. Why keep paying good money to see the same show over and over again. The only good thing about the last time I saw them is they did throw in a couple of rarely played songs.

That's what I figured. As a KISS fan (not to be confused with a KI$$ fan), I saw the original line-up nearly a dozen times between 1977 and 2002. And, as much as I enjoyed the shows, they were always the same show! Of course there were new costumes and a new stage at times, but the set list was almost always identical.
And that's why I don't support KI$$, or scab KI$$, or 1/2 KI$$ or KI$$-lite, or whatever they are - I've seen the real thing, I don't want to see a KI$$ cover band, especially for $149.99!
And $tanley and $immon$ know this - they aren't so stupid that they don't realize that they are losing some of their core fans. That's why they've chosed the state fair and casino tour of Canada - it's the only way they can "sell out" some shows and still look as though they are a viable touring band.
