ANVIL Frontman Comments On Upcoming AC/DC Support Gigs - June 9, 2009
Steve "Lips" Kudlow, the guitarist/vocalist of the Canadian heavy metal legends ANVIL, spoke to the National Post about his band's upcoming opening-act shows with AC/DC at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on July 28 and Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 31.

"Doing the gig is the easy part, getting the gig is what's tough," says Lips. "I last saw AC/DC with my 11-year-old at the Air Canada Centre. Now, he'll get to see me open for the band in the States. It's bombastic, man. Really, really incredible stuff."

ANVIL landed the gigs based on the overwhelming response to and incredible buzz created by the critically acclaimed documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil".

"What it came down to is the fact that AC/DC will benefit because they're the guys who extended a hand to help ANVIL out," Lips adds. "I don't know if they saw the movie or not. I just know a decision was made by Angus [Young, AC/DC's guitarist] and he wanted see ANVIL triumph and succeed."

In between recording their new album and playing Gillete Stadium in Boston on July 28 and Giant Stadium on July 31, ANVIL is also looking at possible tour dates with METALLICA and hoping to join AC/DC on August's Canadian leg of their tour.

"All this stuff that’s happening to us now could never have happened if we didn’t play for more than thirty years," Lips says. "I got to tell you, man, it couldn't happen at a better time in our lives. It bought me a retirement fund, if nothing else."

"Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is the directorial debut of screenwriter Sacha Gervasi ("The Terminal") and was produced by Rebecca Yeldham ("The Kite Runner" and "The Motorcycle Diaries"). The film follows Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner and their band, ANVIL, which released one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982's "Metal on Metal". The album influenced an entire musical generation of rock bands, including METALLICA, SLAYER, and ANTHRAX, who all went on to sell millions of records. ANVIL, on the other hand, took a different path — straight to obscurity. The film is both entertaining and touching as it follows their last-ditch quest for the fame and fortune that has been so elusive to them. "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year.

Praised as "the best documentary I've seen in years," by documentarian Michael Moore, "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" contains appearances by an array of heavy metal icons, including METALLICA's Lars Ulrich, former member of GUNS N' ROSES, Slash, ANTHRAX's Scott Ian, and SLAYER's Tom Araya, among others.

Metal's first true charity case.

It's funny how they're getting gigs based on how well the movie has done. The movie has done well because it's an interesting story, not because these guys are some amazing band that deserves to open for AC/DC or Metallica.

I don't care how much people liked them in their prime, I believe bands should get shots like that based on the quality of their output and not merely based on their persistence and desire. There are a lot of bands that would be opening for AC/DC if all you needed was to want it real bad for a really long time.

And for every band like this that finally gets well deserved recognition, there are others that don't. Diamond Head should've made much bigger. I saw Metallica in '93 or '94 and they went out with Suicidal Tendencies and Danzig. They opened up with a cover of Breadfan (Budgie) and closed with So What (Anti Nowhere league, but no Diamond Head. Woulda been nice for Metallica to bring Diamond Head to the states.

Raven I think shot themeselves a little in the foot.

So it's kinda cool that AC/DC would have Anvil open some shows for them.

Well said.
I'm happy for these guys, of course. But for every "Never-Made-It" band like Anvil there are hundreds that have more to offer (Riot anyone?). This whole Anvil-mania thing has nothing to do with their music and everything to do with the film-making talent of Sacha Gervasi.
Having seen them once in 1985 and once a few years ago, I can attest that Anvil, to put it kindly, left an impression on me for all the wrong reasons.
I'm looking forward to seeing the film though.

Some metal band needs to put their money where their mouth is and take these guys on tour. No one wants to see a "new" band they don't know so why not give Anvil a shot again. You were all influenced by them now pay them back!!!!

kwf/Woke Up Dead re. Anvil's newfound fame vs. Ozzfest: Not to mention there's more listenable Anvil product out there than that from most of the Ozzfest also-rans. I mean, have you cared what Pulse Ultra, Crazy Town and POD have been up to lately enough that a movie needs to be made in their honor on how they're still at it?

Well done AC/DC for this one, and Metrallica if it's true....

I loved the movie and i do agree their music isn't outstanding but for them to get this at this point in their lives is great. I think this will probably be the swansong for Anvil so good luck to them.

Oh and Australians....Wolfmother are a good band too...enjoy

and I'm really glad they are getting a break. They were no the verge of breaking, maybe not huge, but certainly to a higher level with their first 3 albums, at least here in the UK. Bad management and label decisions got in the way.

I admire them for sticking to their guns. And I remember reading an interview with Lips back in 2005 in "Metal Maniacs" before anything to do with the movie had ever happened, and he was saying he was still hanging in there with the band, for the love of doing it. So I hope things continue to go well for them.

I'm going to the Gillette Stadium show and paid a pretty penny for my tickets. I don't want to see some has been band be the only opening act! I was hoping for an established band to open since this is a stadium show. Anvil sounds like a great storu and I will watch the movie and would probably see them at a club. Which by the way they were playing 6 months ago. But not in front of 50,000 people paying top dollar.

epac (re.Anvil touring with Priest/Whitesnake): I heard the same thing as well but if it does happen it'll be for a very small select group of shows. Especially if the AC/DC touring schedule conflicts with Priest's.
