BRET MICHAELS' Representatives Slam TONY AWARDS Organizers Over Response To Incident - June 9, 2009
POISON singer Bret Michaels' representatives (Michaels Entertainment Group, Inc.) have issued the following statement in response to the incident at the Tony Awards on June 7:

After a performance by [POISON and] singer Bret Michaels at the Tony Awards Sunday night, he turned to exit the stage and was struck in the head by a descending half-ton stage prop, sweeping him off his feet causing contusions to his face and knocking him to the ground. Even at that point of impact, the heavy prop was still not halted and continued to descend even though Michaels remained underneath it. Witnesses state the singer moved himself out of the way just moments before the prop touched down.

Janna Elias, a representative for Michaels, stated, "With all due respect to everyone working the Tony Awards, somewhere down the line there was a lack of communication and the prop should have been immediately halted until Michaels was clear. Sunday morning at rehearsals, Bret was never informed that the descending set piece existed, let alone would be moving into position as he was exiting the stage."

Although Bret was visibly dazed, he remained extremely calm backstage as members of POISON's road crew brought him a towel to wipe the blood from his face. His only comment at the time was, "What the hell just hit me?"

The severity of this injury is not being taken lightly as symptoms from head and neck injuries at first may seem like nothing and sometimes do not present for days. At this time, the full extent of his injuries remain to be seen until all x-rays are back.

Added Elias: "I find it surprising that a Tony spokesperson would brush off this incident with a comment stating, Mr. Michaels missed his mark,' with no mention of concern for his condition. If everyone at the Tonys were aware that Bret missed his mark, then they should have been aware enough to stop the set piece from hitting him or at least slowed it down until he cleared the stage. I feel had this incident happened to Liza Minneli, Dolly Parton or Elton John, the Tonys would have at least issued a letter of concern.

"Bret has performed live, with POISON or solo, for over 20 years and on a daily basis is around pyro, lasers and a moving light show. He understands that there is always an element of risk in any live performance, but Bret entrusts his safety to the crew whose job it is to make sure the show goes off without a hitch, and should any member of the band be in harm's way, that they do not complete the gag. However, in this situation, Bret was not on his stage but was at the mercy of the Tonys. He was performing on the Tonys stage and had the reasonable expectation that that safety of the artist was a priority and at no time did he do anything over the top or outlandish that would have put himself or others in a dangerous situation.

"To put this into perspective, a garage door has a safety mechanism so that it doesn't come down if your child should accidentally walk under it while it is in motion. You mean to tell us that with all the technology, producers, directors, stage managers and crew that no one at the Tonys saw Mr. Michaels clearly backing up and turning to exit the stage or was capable of halting the prop or slowing it so it didn't strike Bret? There was no official mark; Bret did what he was instructed to do, which was to finish the song and return to the retractable stage platform, which was exactly what he was doing when the prop struck his head."

Bob Wallerstein, a representative for Michaels, said "We realize the show is live and must go on, however it is unfortunate that the show's host made light of the situation without having any knowledge of the severity of Bret's injuries. Comments that Mr. Harris was doing shots backstage with Mr. Michaels and that Bret was completely fine were untrue considering Bret never saw Mr. Harris prior to, during, or after the Tonys, but in fact was being attended to by medical personnel backstage. Michaels did not return to the stage, the seats nor attend any after-parties."

An official statement by Michaels on this incident is expected by the end of the week.

POISON appeared with the cast of "Rock of Ages", the jukebox musical about an aspiring rock group on the Sunset Strip. The dark-horse show, which originated at Hollywood's King King club before moving to Las Vegas and then Broadway, received five nominations, including one for best musical.

The appearance was the first time that Michaels has appeared with POISON on the red carpet since the infamous fight between him and C.C. DeVille took place at MTV Music Awards.

The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Awards, recognize achievement in live American theatre and are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in New York City.

I am no Poison fan but they are right - if it was some top 40 crooner they would be all over themselves apologizing but since its a "rocker" they don't give a shit - The Tony's fucking suck anyways -

Some people (children) on this site are pretty lame sometimes wishing someone injured just because they don't like their music or their tv show or whatever. There are a lot of intelligent metal fans however it's the ones who make inane and immature comments that make us all look bad -

after watching the video several times, it is very clear that the rest of the band knew to get out of the way and yet, mr. important hammed it up about 2 seconds longer than he should causing him great pain to his ego. the guitarist and bassist both got out of the way quickly, but brett, welllll...... i've worked in the touring industry as well as theatre for over 20 years (probably about 19 more than Janna Elias has), and i can tell you that some of these set pieces weigh a ton and you don't just stop them on a dime. that's why you have rehearsals. had pretty-boy gone up to the drum riser as the others did, when they did, this would've been avoided. douche....

the size/weight of the prop is no excuse... even with rehearsals, that should've been coming down a lot slower... they had *barely* finished the song when that thing was already coming down on them... they should've been in control of it... that could've killed him on the spot... hopefully, he doesn't have any serious injuries like Liam Neeson's wife suffered (which led to her death) after a simple fall while skiing on an amateur slope... you don't have to like Bret/Poison to see this as a major screwup by the Tony's...

i have two thoughts about this post:

1) i feel terrible that bret was injured. i would encourage him to file a suit against whoever was responsible. i hope the courts will see that he was the victim of negligence, and that he will be compensated for his pain and suffering;

2) that's still one of the funniest fucking things i have ever seen! (sorry, bret!)

This press statement is SOOOO the prelude to a lawsuit or at least a hefty settlement. The only thing Brett really has against him is the video itself. CC and that other assclown got their asses on the riser very quick. In fact everyone else seemed to know to get out the way quickly at the end except Brett. Looks like he didn't know WTF he was supposed to do. Probably thought they would never drop it on cue because he's Brett and they can wait for him...guess he found out the hard way. Too bad they didn't squash his oversize melon.

It was Bret's fault for playing around at the end of the set. Just like the other posts said this is rehearsed several times so the performers know what the hell is going on. Poison came to play in someone else's sandbox, thus they had to play by their rules or get sand in their eyes, but in this case it was a 2 ton wall lowering from the ceiling. Hopefully the Tony's made Poison sign an agreement to follow the rules before they performed and they pull that out in court if dumbass tries to sue them.

Do you think he pulled this stunt with live pyro at one of their concerts? No they didn't. And why you may ask? Because he followed the fuckin rules so he wouldn't die or get disfigured for the rest of his life! So what was Bret's problem with following the rules during the Tony's? The other band members had no problem whatsoever with following procedure at the end of their set, and Bret did. The wonderful videos of this event will show the consequences of not following the rules; over, and over, and over again if you've got the time...

if the set piece was on a rope and arbor system being manually lowered by stage hands, there was no fkn way it was going to stop quickly.

If it was on an electric motor system, then it would have stopped on a dime.

It was the stage manager's responsibility to make sure Bret made it under the set piece, and it was Bret's responsibility to get to his spot ON CUE.

They both fucked up.

it's still the Tony crew/stagemanager's job to prevent that accidents like this.
A stage show like this is build and operated by a Pro crew and every crew who works at this level knows that the stage set is ok, all the moving lights, pyro and props are placed, tested and operated by pro's, there is allways one factor that is not under controll of the crew.
The human factor, if things do go wrong it's 9 out of 10 times someone on stage who is not paying attention to cue's because they are to much in the show or distracted by something.
A pro crew knows this and it goes with the job to make sure that nothing is going to move, explode or whatever before the situation on stage is safe to go! even if it messes up the time schedule of the show.

In the end this accident has an happy ending, the half-ton prop could have crushed him and leaving him with servere injury or even death.

About the lip sync, Dolly Parton did an european tour a few years back and created a big fuz by lip sync 80% of her live show, and that was no tv show but a concert tour with well payed tickets.......

For what it's worth, Flesh and Blood was/is a pretty ok album!

Janna has been working in the music industry for a number of years. I would guess around 20 years, most of those with Bret. So to make a statement that you have more experience and blah blah blah is just wrong.

As big a poison fan as I am, I must admit that it looked to me that Bret definately missed him mark as CC and Bobby moved to the drum riser as soon as the song ended. Bret stayed out to pump up the crowd as is his normal thing. Almost like he thought he was ending a poision show and not at the Tony's.

I may not like the same music as some of you, but I would never wish harm on any of them....
