GENE SIMMONS Slams CARLOS SANTANA: 'Get Off The Stage'

KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons had harsh words for Carlos Santana during a Thursday morning (June 11) interview on FOX5 News: Live In Las Vegas. When asked about plans for an upcoming KISS album, Simmons talked of plans for a new tour and, out of nowhere, took a swipe at Hard Rock headliner Santana. "It's time for us to go out and show the little boys how the big boys do it," the 59-year-old said. "I'm sick and tired of these bands like Carlos Santana looking at his shoes and thinking that's a rock concert." "Get off the stage," Simmons said. (Watch video footage of Simmons slamming Santana at FOX5 News.) There has been an ongoing feud between and Simmons since 2005, when Santana questioned Simmons' musical ability and labeled him "Las Vegas entertainment."
Santana said he was appalled by the standard of Simmons' music and insisted the rocker was hiding his lack of skill behind layers of gothic clothing and black makeup.
Santana said, "He's not a musician, he's an entertainer. A musician is (John) Coltrane, Bob Marley. KISS is Las Vegas entertainment, so he wouldn't know what music is anyway. That's why he wears all that stuff.
"A musician doesn't need the mask and the mascara so there's a difference between an entertainer and a musician."
Writing on his official web site in response to Santana's comments, Simmons said in an October 2005 posting, "Carlos Santana is cool. His assessment? I have no problem with it. That's why they make menus in restaurants. Not everyone likes the same meal. I wish him well."

I'm a moderate Kiss fan, but fuck that! Santana is a fucking legend. You should have respect for your fellow musicians. Santana is not blood spitting metal, that is not what he is all about. Its pathetic to even compare the two, and its childish and fucking stupid to see either one of them say crap about each other. What the fuck? They should both know better. But even I question Simmons musical ability. There is a difference between "Las Vegas Entertainment" and a really dedicated musician who is totally entrenched in the music. One is not necessarily better than the other, they both just do what they do. So, though I don't like to compare, there are some obvious points here and it probably pissed off Gene. Before this, Gene probably would have said Santana is a legend.

Not defending Simba in any way here, but CARLOZ owes his entire retirement fund to gringo 'entertainer' Rob Matchbox 20 Thomas. Without that hit ten years ago, Santanny would be working at Burrito King at the corner of Alvarado & Sunset. Also, if you want pure entertainment, read CARLOZ's interview in Rolling Stone from last year. Guy's a kook. Still, the first two Santana albums ROCK. Don't need the guru trip, though.

Gene Simmons and Kiss ARE Las Vegas entertainers. Having said that I still enjoy Kiss ( up until the Scab era....).
Ace is one of my favourite guitarists, and he's sloppy as hell. Still it sounds cool.
Carlos is an unbelievable player, if you want proof listen to the Lotus album.

And by the way, Santana is a different kind of guitarist than what we're used to here in the Metal world. He's what I call a 'feel' guitarist, where it's all about emotional aspect insted of technical chops. The counterpart to the 'feel' guitarist would be the 'tech' guitarist, where it's all about the chops, and nothing but the chops. You know, the kind that practices scales for hours a day. A classic example of that would be Yngwie Malmsteen. I've played with both kinds, and they have their respective vices and virtues.

If he colaborated with Cheech And Chong or Carlos Mencia. Otherwise I have no interest in his music. Granted he is an incredible musician. I just can't get into his music. It's not my bag. Gene Simmons has never been touted as a stellar musician. KISS are an attraction. Pure entertainment. And more power to 'em. They've earned their fame. Their 70's material is essential hard rock. I've seen 'em. I'd go again. I probably wouldn't buy a new release, but they'd be a few pages ahead of new Santana on my list.

I totally agree with Carlos! Now, I am a KISS fan up to the Creatures of the Night album. I love performers like Alice Cooper and bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir. The make up and theatrics add to the music. Having said that I shudder at the thought of Dani Filth getting up on stage at age 59. As far as the swipe at Carlos' song with that Matchbox 20 singer- I'd love to see Gene write a song that sells as much as that one did.

carlos is an overrated, 2 or 3 hit song (and one thanks to rob thomas, wow that gives you cred) wonder....his guitar playing is incredibly overrated.....his tone sets him apart....the actual playing isnt much higher on a scale than Kiss's....

Carlos Santana is a great guitarist, but people like him seem to forget that rock and roll began as pretty simple music. KISS aren't just a band who "hide behind facepaint and gimmicks to show they can't play", they pretty much know that they "keep it simple, stupid." There's a point behind their music, it IS entertainment. It's not meant to be deep, like AC/DC wasn't eitther. It's all about fun. It's all very theatrical and a total thrill.
Back thirty years ago, the vast majority of us got it about KISS.
The rest, well, there was, I dunno, Little River Band and oh, yeah, Bread, and Carlos Santana. No, just kidding about that last one. Now seriously, which do YOU think would hold your interest more, "I Stole Your Love" or "Oye Como Va"?

you completely miss the point. Kiss has sold more record, who cares. So has Mariah Carey. doesn't make up for the fact KiSS is a Vegas act now.
as far as the playing being on the same level...thats silly. I prefer to listen to KiSS, but Santana is far more than "Smooth". He did have a big career in the late 60's & 70's, he & his band would have wiped KiSS up musically. Gene is a BASIC bass player...KiSS if fun, some good 70's song, but musically limited.
Yes, KiSS has more energy on stage, live, but that is their M.O...there are plenty of great players that aren't about that, that "look at their shoes" and still put on a great show, but playing music....I do love a high energy show(Gene isn't bringing much energy these days anyhow), but I can do without the bass player being housted up by pullies. Who cares?....
David Gilmore, Clapton, Beck, and a slew of others don't need to spit blood to put on a great show. (EC might be a bit boring now). It was never about that. Even by his last year, Hendrix was toning down & still was great. He could look at his shoes & play all night I'd love it a zillion times more than Gene & KISS. Just dress in jeans & T. Slash did, you dont need a goofy Demon Costume....
I like some KiSS, they were fun in the 70's, but Gene is totally shedding light on the fact he is a fat Vegas act who only cares about the next buck, ZERO music integrity now. Go do your lame show Gene & have another pastry, sell your KiSS Driveway Sealent

I just read Santana has given in, he said he's wrong & his last shows he's been spitting blood, has cables pull him over the crowd where he then deficates on them, breaths fire, and during his solo, he's guitar smokes...he also has a bowl passed around the audience & he asks for any fluids, which he drinks when he comes out for the encore...NOT urban legend, this is real, tell your friends...Oh, & his face is painted like a racoon. Keep dreamin carlos. Gene was and is right about santana, carlos should shut his piehole. Anybody with half a brain would rather see kiss live than santana. Gene made the same defensive attacks at Grunge. "Who wants to see bands in Jeans & flannel, angry, angry at what"...Alice in Chains, in their Jeans & T's, angry, would STUMP KiSS. Blow them off stage with raw power...and not have to dress like a Monster or Fox, maybe even play looking at their feet. ...but to say "you look at your shoes"...is saying people that don't dress like monsters or gay mimes, then they aren't giving you a good MUSIC concert..Kiss could put on a great energetic show, but guitarists can get up there in jeans & T's & give you music chills with their PLAYING! (maybe not Santana, but....)

ki$$ is playing a 5000 seat casino close to my hometown and it isn't sold out yet. they're playing in a town of 40,000 but it's half an hour from the biggest city in the province/state. tickets start at $149.99, so that might account for something! i've heard a lot of people say they won't pay that money for "scab-KI$$".

At least Santana can play a guitar with a different sound. He is not like anyone else. He is very talented and as far as I am concerned very underated. Gene Simmons looks like an ass and acts like one on TV. I know there music styles are different and some people really like Kiss but I wonder how far they would have gone with the stupid makeup and costumes. At least Santana does not need makeup and costumes, he has real talent!!

I can only wish they'd come play one of our local casinos, id be there in a minute. The pavillion is already sold out for summerfest. The crappy seats are all that is left in milwaukee.
Some seats were only $35 dollars...I'd rather spend the 150 dollars and see them in a smaller venue.
linny...you go watch real talent,(yawn) I want to be entertained for my money, and nobody puts on a show like kiss.
Linny since kiss is so talentless...how come they are millionaires and santana is strumming his guitar on a street corner with a coffee can, beggin for change.

I just logged onto the Casino Rama website. Tickets for KI$$ went on sale three weeks ago, prices are $160.00 and $212.75 (Canadian funds)!!!
I was able to get (but I didn't buy them, of course) 8 tickets in either price range in very good proximity to the stage. Remember, this is only a 5000 seat auditorium and KI$$ is scheduled to play there two consecutive nights, July 20 and July 21. It's not even close to being sold out after three weeks! Casino Rama is located in Orillia, Ontario, less than a half hour from Toronto.
Interestingly, on the Ticketmaster site, the promotional pictures of KI$$ for these concerts are photos of the band with Ace and Peter, not Tommy and Singer!!!!

And i beg your pardon .... you need to be a total rookie to think that any of his playing is inspired or hard...
Also, don't forget this guy kicked out of his band one Neal Schoon ! Guess he could not have the kid stealing the show eh ???! Seriously now. Santana's boring - and his best work was 25+ odd years ago. Gene's an average musician - but has written far many more and far more memorable songs than poor old Carlos....
Maybe when he plays Greece, if he doesn't cancel his performance since he's sold only 3000 tics in a 60.000 stadium so far - good old Carlos could let me show him how rock n roll is supposed to be played !!!
Get of the stage indeed ! Go an play a song with Ricky martin or that clown from Nickelcrap !

Santana needs to get his nose out of the air. He has more in common with Kiss than he would like to think. Both band s made classic music in the 1970's. Once the 80's came around , it was downhill for both. What's Carlos Santana doing now? Recording radio friendly pop songs and using outside writers. Kiss and Santana both suck now.

The 1st 3 Santanas have great tracks, but '82's Shango is great from start to finish, only Santana doesn't realize this. It's been remastered elsewhere, except USA, though available online. Santana needs to show this album the respect it deserves...
It is a hughe mistake when people focus on the makeup, clothing, or long hair, before giving credit to the music itself. Carlos likely also feels that the 80s Rock bands were all about long hair, makeup, & hairspray---Wrong! None of those factors ever attracted me to Metal, Hard Rock, New Wave, Classic rock, or even a bit of Punk. Fact is, never had long hair, tattooes, or leather, except lots of rock & concert shirts now. No credit to Santana on this 1, though no fan of Simmons, it is his way to present Kiss' music.
