Former BLACK SABBATH Singer To Celebrate 'Headless Cross' Anniversary With U.S. Tour
- June 16, 2009
|
|
According to a posting on the unofficial BLACK SABBATH web site Black-Sabbath.com, former SABBATH singer Tony Martin will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the BLACK SABBATH album "Headless Cross" by touring the U.S. in July and August. Martin's band, which will also be called HEADLESS CROSS, will consist of the following musicians: Tony Martin (BLACK SABBATH)- Vocals Rolf Munkes (EMPIRE) - Guitar Jamie Mallender - Bass Danny Needham (BAILEY'S COMET, RAZORBACK) - Drums Geoff Nicholls (BLACK SABBATH) - Keyboards Commented Martin: "'It's really THE TONY MARTIN BAND, and that's what we enter the States as, but the promoter has got itchy fingers, I think, and decided it's better to use the album title. I'm not ENTIRELY happy with it just because, but I decided to run with it. He continued, "So the idea is to commemorate 20 years since 'Headless Cross' and I can reveal that some of the songs have NEVER been done live before... like 'Black Moon'... It's a REALLY complex track, but we're gonna bring it to the stage and show it off. Also, we've just left behind the anniversary of 'Eternal Idol', so there's gonna be some more off that album too like 'Born To Lose'. "I have to say it's been a hard slog with negotiations and getting visas and stuff, so we come at VERY short notice and hope to be with you guys in just under three weeks from now!!! "We are a couple of members short — normally we like to have more people up there — but it wasn't possible this time round, but we got it covered. "We aren't able to bring with us much in the way of visual stuff just because there is so little time to get it all together, so... it's just the songs... Me and... well.... I hope.. you guys!!! We're out there 'till the end of August." Exact cities and dates will be announced soon.
Video footage of Tony Martin, Geoff Nicholls and Danny Needham performing with a band that was backing Joe Lynn Turner ( RANBOW, DEEP PURPLE) at a concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2008 can be viewed below.

One of their best albums IMO, it's perfect. Hopefully Tony can still pull these off live, should be a good show. Born to Lose is a classic track also from the underrated Eternal Idol!!

For the Heaven and Hell tour IMO, better than CnC for an old fart like me
The Tony Martin era in many respects is as good as the Dio era, if ya wittle it down to 50-60 minute set, it would be as heavy as the Dio set if the TM band is good. And an incredible night of Iommi music.
In any event, I'll get down to AC and may hang in the casino till bout the end of coheed and maybe catch the last song or 2, if Tony the Cat was there, I would be in the hard rock early...

Geoff Nicholls' presence seals this for quality's sake.
I will see this live if they hit DFW.

Headless Cross? Sure, why not? Sabbath calls themselves Heaven & Hell now. So can Iommi sue?
Next Tony Martin can call his band Cross Purposes - I guess Tyr and Forbidden are already taken.
Just me or do a lot of people feel sorry for Geoff Nichols? He always seems to be Sabbath's bitch.

Hey guys, good on you for throwing some praise at Geoff Nicholls. He is a truly unsung giant in metal. Geoff wrote the famous bass line for Heaven and Hell, he played bass on Heaven and Hell, he played on those kick ass Quartz albums, wrote 7th Star, was Tony's enforcer, wrote the better songs on Ozzy's Down to Earth album (and the better songs off Tony Martin's Scream album). Just a great musician. I was also glad to see Tony Iommi remembering Geoff in the Heaven and Hell TDYK liner notes.

Did Tony get Ozzy and Sharon's permission first?????
I mean, I heard they even wanted the words Black and Sabbath banned from the spoken/written word unless they receive 25% of the money made off them.

It's weird to call it Headless Cross, but then again why not? I never stopped being a Black Sabbath fan but I could hardly listen to Forbidden so hopefully they'll leave that one alone. Headless Cross, Eternal Idol, and Cross Purposes all have great songs. Tony Martin is a fine, if somewhat uncharismatic vocalist. I'd check it out for sure! Before long it will be the 30th anniversary for Born Again (2013). I wonder if that will recieve any fanfare?

Tony Martin era is great, unfortunately it wasn't commercially successful...
I don't know the reasons, maybe after so many vocalists (I think Martin was the 5th to sing on an album after Ozzy, Dio, Gillan and Hughes) people didn't care to even listen and give it a chance.
Then after Cross Purposes metal wasn't commercially viable anymore, it was the grunge era already.
Still the music was really good and now that metal has become huge and Black Sabbath is popular again (as Heaven and Hell) I can't see a reason why not playing these great songs again and give the new and old fans a chance to hear them live (once again).
I understand Mr. Martin disliked the idea of playing as Headless Cross, but I think it's a pretty good idea, very appropriate for the moment. And it might help his career with the Tony Martin Band, get young fans to acknowledge the albums he made with Sabbath. The guy really deserves the credits and recognition for his great work.

The clips at the top of this page are not The Tony Martin Band. Tony Martin, Geoff Nicholls and Danny Needham (Drum Monster) went over to Brazil and guested with a band over there.
+KentHiltz, you are quite correct - the promo pic was taken in a shitter at The Ice Hall, St Petersburg, Russia, in 2006 when we played with Uriah Heep, Nazareth and U.D.O. But it was a very nice shitter!
