METALLICA Now Selling First-Ever CLIFF BURTON Biography - June 21, 2009
METALLICA is currently selling "To Live Is To Die: The Life And Death Of Metallica's Cliff Burton", the first-ever Burton biography, via the band's official web site. Written by U.K.-based author Joel McIver and published by Jawbone Press, the book includes a foreword by Cliff's close friend in METALLICA, Kirk Hammett.

"I'm deeply honored that Kirk spoke to me for the Cliff Burton biography," McIver (pictured below with Hammett) told BLABBERMOUTH.NET earlier this year. "We talked about the rollercoaster ride of METALLICA's early career which he and Cliff experienced, from the time that both men joined the band in early 1983 until Cliff's death three and a half years later. The impact that Burton had on the rest of METALLICA, both musically and as an example of how to stick to your principles in the music industry, was profound — and Kirk provided a perspective on that impact which couldn't have come from anywhere else."

Other interviewees who spoke to McIver for this book, many for the first time on the public record, include Cliff's bass teacher Steve Doherty; legendary reporter and photographer Brian Lew; Bay Area headbanger Harald Oimoen, the subject of "The Ballad Of Harald O" by the infamous SPASTIK CHILDREN, in which Cliff played; that band's frontman Fred Cotton; EXODUS founder Gary Holt; Metal Blade label founder Brian Slagel; photographer Ross Halfin; Cliff's first guitar tech Chuck Martin; METALLICA's first fanclub manager K.J. Doughton; "Ride The Lightning" and "Master Of Puppets" producer Flemming Rasmussen; the last reporter to interview Cliff, Jörgen Holmstedt; roadie and ex-METAL CHURCH guitarist John Marshall, who was also in the bus crash which killed Burton; Lennart Wennberg, the photographer at the scene of the crash; and Cliff's girlfriend for the last year of his life, Corinne Lynn.

After Kirk Hammett's foreword, separate introductions are provided by a range of musicians influenced by Burton, including Mikael Åkerfeldt (OPETH), Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT), Dave Ellefson (F5, ex-MEGADETH) and a host of other musicians and writers.

McIver's earlier book, "Justice For All: The Truth About Metallica", will be republished in its third edition in the summer by Omnibus Press. "Looks like that first METALLICA book has taken on a life of its own," comments the author. "Since its publication five years ago it's been translated into nine languages: clearly there was a gap in the market for a fully comprehensive book on METALLICA. Lars Ulrich told me recently that he's constantly asked to sign copies of it all over the world."

Legend has it that Kirk and Cliif drew cards to decide who got which bunk. Cliff drew the Ace of Spades...

So these guys are making money off of Burton's biography or is all being given to his family or charity or something? It seems pretty shitty to profit off of this dude's death, if they are.

Look forward to the book.....I dont see how Burton can be compared to Newsted. Both good players...different styles.
Just because an artist writes something that is easy to play does not take away from their talent or what they are capable of.
Trujillo is an excellent bassist, however the best Metallica, in my opinion is from Kill em all to justice

i've read it. actually, it's an interesting read, focuses a lot on Cliff's life pre Metallica, and of course covers the Metallica stuff, yea, everyone here knows the story, but the book is SOOOOO badly written it's laughable. A teenager in an English lit class could have written it. And it's got some serious facutal errors, ie, that Jon Zazula (Megaforce dude) had his store in New York City, when of cours it was in New Jersey. Minor things like that, but I mean, come on, fact check anyone? Anyway, it'll definitely have you reaching for your copies of the first 3 albums, but if you are looking for a well WRITTEN book on Cliff, this is NOT it!!

I think it's about time there be a book a Cliff bio. I've read other books on Metallica's history, and Cliff will get a chapter, and that's it. Doesn't really go into much detail about his life prior to Metallica. Should be a good read.

@Kent Brockman

Kirk admitted that in an interview a few years ago. Kirk also seemed to have a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that if could have been him. Really sad interview to wat

See, this concerns me because I have the first edition of the Justice for All book that Joel McIver wrote and it had some HUGE errors that were hard for me to swallow, like having Kirk’s birthday as January 18, 1962 (or 3) when it is actually November 18, 1962 and, just in case you need a fact check, Kirk has a fucking tattoo below his chest that clearly states: Born in San Francisco 11-18-62 or something like that. I think either Mustaine’s or Burton’s birthday had an error as well. There were a few others, but birthdays are such egregious errors, they’re inexcusable, and if they weren’t copy edited in the later editions, that’s just terrible journalism, terrible biography writing.

agree, there's a few other errors as well in this Cliff book. Apparently this guy has written loads of books, but i can't understand how. he's an absolutely terrible writer! and yea, those kind of factual errors are really a red flag. it's really a crappy book, i've not read the one you refer to but i wouldn't read anything else this guy wrote. just wanted to warn people that they will get an interesting look at a great talent but NOT a quality book!

It's Joel McIver's book, not Metallica's.. the money goes to McIver and his publisher...

The money should go to McGyvor because he is great.
