WE ARE THE FALLEN's LECOMPT Says New Band Is 'Completely Different' From EVANESCENCE

CNN's Reggie Aqui conducted an interview with guitarist John LeCompt and singer Carly Smithson of WE ARE THE FALLEN on Tuesday, June 23. Watch the eight-minute chat below. WE ARE THE FALLEN — the new band featuring original EVANESCENCE members LeCompt, Ben Moody (guitar) and Rocky Gray (drums) along with "American Idol" powerhouse Smithson — was officially unveiled during a press conference on Monday, June 22 in Hollywood, California. The group also performed a two-song set consisting of WE ARE THE FALLEN's first single, "Bury Me Alive" and a rendition of EVANESCENCE's "Going Under". "Bury Me Alive" is available for free download at WeAreTheFallen.com (e-mail sign-up required). It can also be streamed below. WE ARE THE FALLEN's lineup is rounded out by bassist Marty O'Brien, whose recording and touring credits include DISTURBED, KELLY CLARKSON, STATIC-X, METHODS OF MAYHEM and TOMMY LEE. "This all happened by accident," Smithson — who sang EVANESCENCE's "Bring Me to Life" during the 2008 Idols Live tour— told USA Today. She's friends with Moody's housemate, Monique Morrison. "I met him once or twice (at the house) before the band thing," said Smithson, who had been working on a solo project. The new group's name alludes to EVANESCENCE's 2003 major-label debut album, "Fallen", which has sold 7 million copies in the USA. Smithson doesn't see herself as replacing EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee. " Amy let the boys go," she told USA Today. "We just started a new band, called THE FALLEN. It's got really nothing to do with EVANESCENCE." WE ARE THE FALLEN initially may perform a few EVANESCENCE songs live, she says, "but we're pretty much focused on new music. You have an amazing writing team here, and amazing musicians. "Our voices are completely different," she said of Lee. "This music is, obviously, the players from EVANESCENCE, but Marty's bringing a different flavor from what he does. I'm bringing a different flavor from what I do, and Ben has completely explored many different genres over the last few years. It's not EVANESCENCE anymore. It's huge. First off props to her for being from San Diego like we are. If Ben wrote most of the hits off the first Evanescence cd then I hope they do ssound like the band because the first album was great and now they are just a shadow of themselves. I thought the song was killer and I normal;y don't like chick singers but Carly has the goods to deliver the power and the tone only a few have. i have been rocking the live video because I think she sounds better on that then the recorded track. Carly if you are reading this I would love to have you guest on our next record. keep it up.

Firstly, to say that this band is completely different from Evanescence and THEN to go play an Evanescence song at their unveiling is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!
Then the whole name thing, come on. So The Fallen was taken by two, yes TWO other bands that have had releases, and probably another hundred cover bands all over the country, and the best these clowns can come up with is to put "we are" in front?
Man, what a generation of retards we have running around now.

To be honest as far as guitar work and things go Terry (from Cold) did easily as good of a job as Ben on "The Open Door" and those songs Ben wrote were years and years old before going on "Fallen" most of them featured on "Origin" their self released album some years before. The "Fallen" album is a collection of songs of 10 years. Good luck.

If you guys are not like Evanescence then why are you covering their songs? Seems all Ben is doing is trying to pit We Are The Fallen VS. Evanescene because he has some hidden agenda to prove. This band seems to around for all the wrong reasons.

First off, I love the name "We Are The Fallen" much more than boring The Fallen. Me and my wife love Evanescence's music with and without Ben. I love Amy's voice and I would still like to see her bring Evanescence back to relevance. These 2 bands can both make it, similar or not, they both have the talent. Carly has amazing control and with such melody and harmony in her voice (just like Amy). There is no need to say you are nothing like Evanescence, if anything, i believe they are using that reference as a platform. Dude from CAGE, you guys slay, but i have to say, new album sounds overproduced, i have all your old albums though. I hope Carly takes you up on that offer.

Hey dude. I ain't no clown. Amy fired me and Rocky midway through the last tour. So why wouldn't we hook back up with Ben now? Things are tough out there and a guy's gotta feed his family. Ben's our friend and was a great songwriter and this is a chance for us to have another shot at a career hopefully. No one has Amy's voice, so it's unfair to compare the two. Evanescence is a kick ass band. Maybe it does sound a lot like Evanescence, but what's wrong with that? We'll play more original material once we write it. JL

What do you get when you combine an american idol dropout and some losers who couldn't cut it in a real band? You get the Fallen or We are the Fallen or maybe they should just change it to We Want to be back in Evanescence. No cred or originality. Creepy. Fallen is what they are straight out of the gate. You mean with 3 guys who got fired by a chick in a real band who go out 5 years later and find a new chick that they dress up just like the old chick and have her try to sing and look just like the old chick. Not that I love Evanescence, but Amy can sing her ass off. I've seen them at festivals and she brings it. A reject from a reality tv show that brought us Clay Akin and other no-talent force fed trash. Rocky's a decent drummer but LeCompt sucks. Crap guitar poser. Don't quit your day job LeCrap. I'm actually not a big fan of Amy's voice.
I like this new chick a lot better. She just needs to rock it a little more, IMHO. Not like a Flyleaf kind of thing, but like a Kelly Clarkson "Since U Been Gone" kind of thing.

You want to put together a "rock" or "hard-rock" band with a female singer, she'd better have some "rock" or "hard-rock" pipes.
Like her or not, Kelly Clarkson can actually rock out.
I'm not saying they need to make We Are The Fallen a bubble-gum pop band in any way similar to Kelly Clarkson.
I'm saying if they want to distance themselves from Amy, their new singer needs to sing like she means it.
Amy's too clean for the style of music. It's gotten cliche.
Ben (et. al) can write and arrange some good stuff, but naturally it's going to have some Evanescence flavor. That's his writing style. The best way to gain distance between We Are The Fallen and Evanescence is to make sure the singing style is unique.

the best way to distance yourself is to not name yourself after an Evanescence album, not dress the singer up just like the singer of Evanescence, not take photos that look like Evanescence, not try to sing and move exactly like Amy and not surround yourself with the rejects from Evanescence. Look at the publishing credits and you'll see that Amy and Ben co-wrote everything, along with another guy on Fallen and Amy wrote everything on the second album. Carly is a decent singer but doesn't have Amy's range or emotion or depth. Carly should run as fast as she can from these clowns who just seem to be trying to get back at Amy for something or just re-live the past. The only Idol who can really sing is Carrie Underwood, but whatever. If you like Kelly Clarkson, that's cool. At least she's not trying to be someone else.

Seriously at the end of the day Blabbermouth is clearly not the audience for this type of news nor music.
One unfortunate contrast:
The Fallen sold 7 million copies.
I just read Devon's new album Ki sold like 850 copies nd Sworn Enemy's sold something like 500+ (thats just straight up embarrassing- fanbois save the justification rants).
This just goes to prove the general listening public in America are fucking clueless.

Mad props to you John. You just waded into hell, but I give you some major, major credit. If a fraction of the artists that read BM posted, it would be a rather interesting place.
Here's the deal though, I don't buy your denial regarding the comparisons to your former band's music. As the old saying goes; There is no such thing as bad publicity.
The fact the band is being protrayed as having three former members of Evanescence IMMEDIATELY draws attention to media outlets and as a result, it will also draw comparison to Evanescence's sound.
It certainly doesn't help matters at all that your singer is female, has a similar look to Amy Lee and the music DOES sound a little similar to Evanescence.
And seriously? Covering an Evanescence song doesn't help your cause at all either. I realize that your current music catalog is limited, but that's REALLY not going to help your cause in deterring comparisons to your former band. Find other (better) cover songs for Carly.
Your band is talented, there's no denying that, however if you want to earn some credit for yourselves and shake the comparisons, my suggestion to you and the band is to drop the "former Evanescence members" spiel, drop the Evanescence cover songs and let your music speak for itself.

Dude thanks. Our new cd is the first one we recorded ourselves so of course it is not perfect but damn the price was right ha! I am definately going to take you advice and fix the compression problem. Thankfuly it has only bugged a few people but you are probably right. Next time (2010 we are already working hard on the next one) it will be better I am sure but for our first time it has been serving us well as the reviews have been awesome. As far as this topic here, the song is good, the chick can sing and I will probably buy the record.

Dear We are the fallen, you guys rock. There is nothing wrong if you sound like evanescence. People used to say similar things about linkin park. They used to say all their songs sound the same and look where they are now.
I have seen evanescence twice and they rock yes, but so do you guys.
People need stop comparing this band wth evenascence and saying amy is better or carly is better. They are both awesome! Take them a separate entities that do sound similar but are differnt. Thats twice the rock to love!
From your new single, it's obvious you guys have talent because it rocks!!
The rock world is big enough for 2 bands that sound like evanescence. There is more music to love!! twice the rock to love!! Whether you sound like evanscence or not that doesnt matter.
Just keep writing kick ass songs like your new single and everything will be all right!!

Evanescence IS Amy Lee,Ben Moody,David Hodges which means Amy WAS only 1/3 of Evanescence.
Ben Moody,John LeCompt, & Rocky Gray with Carly will make some amazing music.
Btw I have no problem with Amy,I love her talent. I just have a problem with lead singers firing their entire band and then trying to tell the world that the four new idiots behind them ARE Guns N' Roses or Evanescence.
