MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE On 'Endgame': 'I've Made The Record Of My Career'
- June 25, 2009
|
|
Darryl Sterdan of Sun Media recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A few excerpts from the chat follow below. On touring with SLAYER again (as part of of the "Canadian Carnage" run) after so many years: Mustaine: "This tour's going to be outrageous. It has been quite some time. Because we played when we were so young, it seems like it was just yesterday. I think the fans are going to be excited because it's two very powerful bands." On whether there's any friendly competition between MEGADETH and SLAYER: Mustaine: "No. There really isn't any room in my psyche, my id, to think, 'Well, this guy can play better than I can, so I better get out there and shake my ass.' Dude, it's music. I just go out there to have fun and to play. I've been playing a long time. I'm a legendary guitar player. I've got what I want in life. I'm very confident and very content. If every time I go up onstage, I get caught up in trying to steal back my thunder from the guy who was onstage before me, then I never really had any thunder in the first place." On the upcoming MEGADETH album, "Endgame": Mustaine: "I've made the record of my career. It's as aggressive as anything I've played in years. It's faster than anything that I've heard in a long time. The record is the best MEGADETH record I've ever done by far. It's my favourite record. I've been playing songs to people and everybody goes — 'Whoo!' or 'Fuck yeah!' That's been the consensus — a lot of whoo-hoos, hugs and fuck yeahs." (Laughs) On playing new material live: Mustaine: "We're gonna play one of the songs from the new album — a song called 'Headcrusher'. It's about a medieval torture device. That's by far the most appropriate song for us to play for this audience. It's straightforward, no-nonsense MEGADETH thrash metal." On MEGADETH's fans and haters: Mustaine: "I've been through a lot of stuff. I've been pretty open with my fans about it — all that 'a burden shared is a burden lessened' bullshit, I believe in that. Our fans know that they can count on me to be honest with them. I talk to them a lot on my TheLiveLine web site. I think sometimes that I should talk to them a little bit more about stuff that's a little bit more meaty — like political stuff and social issues. But I know if I do that, there's gonna be somebody who's going to take exception with me and make it their life's ambition to tell me I'm wrong. And I've got a couple of stalkers, which is very unfortunate. There's one girl that's following me around saying she's my stepsister and demanding my older sister take a blood-test. It's really disappointing. I'm accessible to the fans ... but dude, my job is not as fun as it used to be." Read more from Sun Media.

I love Dave, but he needs to stop with the constant mentioning of how he's a legendary guitar player. Yes, he is, but when it comes from his mouth, it makes him sound arrogant and well....douchey. Plus, I hope to hell that he's right about his new album, and its as good as he says it is.

So true... Dave is a great guy, and I've met him a few times, but it's almost if he feels compelled to attract hatred. How many times did he make the album of his career now? Can't say that Headcrusher sounds special at all... I doubt it will top Cryptic Writings, which was a great one, that I keep listening to after all this years, certainly more than United Abominations. Generic thrash and bad propaganda. Where did thinking Dave go? Vanished with Celtic Frost?

Says this kind of shit about everything he puts out. I'm sure the record will be good (his last one was) but I think he may be blowing smoke up the 'ol ass again. He's on a "best" kick lately. Best drummer I've ever had, best guitar player I've ever had, my guitar playing is the best it's been in years. Good God man.

I think Dave Mustaine is making the best music of his life. The last albums have been my favorite Megadeth songs ever. I have been a fan of them since day one and I believe Mustaine just keeps getting better at songwriting. This new music will be just brutal and freaking cool. First day buyer!

Dave is a legend, but a bit modesty should apply here.. And you guys Cryptic Writings? are you serious? The best Megadeth album imo is Rust in Peace, they haven't topped that yet...and doubt they will, the last album was pretty great but no Rust In Peace....

Cryptic Writings now? strange. I remember most fans thinking it was kind of ordinary at the time. It's nothing special IMO. 'Youthanasia' was much better.
hell i even prefer 'United Abominations'.
Anyway, new album will be decent at best IMO.

we can trust him huh? how about all the times through the 90s he said he was off heroin, then a few years later he says he was on heroin at the time.
dave has done some good stuff, but in all honesty, he's the shit element of megadeth. The drums, bass, solos and the production were what made them cool. dave needs to realize this and quit trying to suck his own dick. he's about as legendary a guitar player as dan spitz.

What metal fan would deny that?
Anyway, I dig what I've heard of the new track "Headcrusher"
I liked the last two albums alot, but something tells me this one may be better. Still, I think most well versed metal heads realize Deth's high water marks will always be the Peace Sells and Rust In Peace albums. Peerless classics both.

This is just Dave being Dave. I'm not sure its productive for people to make suggestions about what he should and should not say at this point. I may agree with some of the suggestions, but the guy is 45 years old. HE'S NOT GONNA CHANGE. Let him be, ya know?
A fan for 15 years, I just laugh it off. I think it's funny because he's made these type of statements his entire career and still manages to ruffle feathers.
I think in the instances that matter (alcohol, drugs and family loyalty) he's made some extraordinary changes and I trust he will stick to them. If he lets a pompous comment or two slip out...great! I still find myself going to some of his old interviews for a good laugh. He is a hilarious individual.

i dont think calling yourself legendary, its only arrogant if its not 100% accurate and honest
fact is he is a legendary guitar player
and saying it out loud every so often is probably good for him to remind himself what hes achieved

Yuyp...I realy lost respect for him immediately after Dimebag went down when he made mention that there are few guitarists like he and Dimabag that can play "where the air is so thin". So, he couldn't even let Dime go without bringing himself into the discussion- referring to his alleged greatness. Face it Dave, the fact that you need to continue to tell yourself how great you are is simply pathetic. You are not great, you are an average metal guitarist at best.
What did he say?? ...."Why is it that everything you touch turns to gold, and everything I do backfires in my face" hahahah

Why do so many on here feel the need to bash Mustaine for it? I often think the supposedly "Heavy Music Fans" who bitch when a band puts out something great in the latter years of their career, really want the band to just repeat themselves & want in this case; Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good! Pt. II Peace Sells... & We Are All Buying, Now That Obama is Prez? So Far, So Good... So What are We Fighting for? Anyway, The new track sound fucking great, I hope the album crushes Death Magnetic in the long run, not so much to show that Megadeth is the better band (everyone should already know this by now) but rather to light the fire under Metallica's ass so they make the album Death Magnetic should have been! I remember that from around 85-88 both bands were kickcin' ass so it was a win win for the fans & it would be cool if history repeated its self.

Dave has always taken a back seat to the "other" guitarist in Megadeth. Marty, Chris all of them. The most legendary thing Dave did for metal guitar playing is his picking technique. Anything else he has done on the guitar has been good but fucking hell, not legendary. He's more a legend for his personality, the dumb shit he says and yes, I hate to throw this in here...being kicked out of Metallica. The only album Dave has ever put out that I thought was 100% shit was Risk. Everything else has been very good and he should be proud of his music. An some dimp above wrote that "we all secretly want to be Dave Mustaine". That's a good one. If there's one person who is truly legendary and still living that I wouldn't mind being for just one day would be Lemmy. That man is legendary and respected.

Its funny no one tells bands who write about the devil to STFU, & no one tells bands who write about being citizens of the world or anti-American stuff to STFU either.
Guess what I'm American & I believe in God but it doesn't stop me from being open minded or listening to Jacob's Dream or Mercyful Fate, Stryper or Celtic Frost (& I'm not talkin' Cold Lake), Barren Cross or Slayer . Whatever happened to it being about the music? Why is it some are so closed minded that they can't look past the subject matter & just enjoy it ? I don't get my politics, faith, morals, values from Music, Movies, Books, Games etc.
Those of you who do or are challenged by a band or a person with different views/beliefs are the real POSERS! Man back in the day posers were the minority, the people who you knew heavy music was just a passing fad & one day they would grow up, now it seems like you are the majority & that is why so many bands lack integrity in what they produce.
All true Metalheads should demand Authenticity, & then tell all these fuckin poser to STFU!

SKEPTICAL! Sure Dave, you're firing on all cylinders right now, new album, solid band-lineup. But to say ENDGAME is "better" than RIP or Countdown to Extinction....now, YOU'LL REALLY HAVE some explaining to do if this new record doesn't par up or indeed be your best, and that will be according to your FANS ultimately. If this is your best according to you, that's fine. Then again, the fans will decide 2 or 5 months after ENDGAME comes out. And Headcrusher sounded good....not great (but that can change with a couple more spins when its on CD). So, it'll either be ENDGAME to be Megadeth's best or it will still be RIP & COUNTDOWN, IMO...we all shall see.

I hope the new album is good. I've heard some riffs from it already, so far it sounds pretty cool, but I am not getting my hopes up. The last album United Abominations could have been A LOT better. The title track was the best song on the album and they NEVER play it live. Mustaine and SLAYER are way past their primes, so I'm not getting my hopes up on anything new that they come out with. The new Slayer song Psychopathy red kicks ass though. Hopefully the rest of the album will be good. The last 3 Slayer albums were dissapointing, actually the last 4 if you count Undisputed Attitude
