According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, the new album from progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER, entitled "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", is on track to sell between 35,000 and 40,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. DREAM THEATER's last CD, "Systematic Chaos", opened with 36,000 units in 2007 to enter The Billboard 200 chart at No. 19. 2005's "Octavarium" premiered with 27,000 copies to debut at No. 36. In addition to the standard-version CD, DREAM THEATER's tenth studio album, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", was also made available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc, special-edition CD that includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs. DREAM THEATER commenced work on "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" — the band's second for Roadrunner, following up 2007's "Systematic Chaos" — in October of last year. Just got mine yesterday..and it's even better than what Mike described.
Just plain beautiful.
THIS is the reason why I continue to buy my fav artists music...give the fans something physical and tangible that we can display proudly.
How in the fuck do you display a collection of mp3's inyour living room? lol
Great album.
Only small little complaint I wish that had been in the boxset would have been a DVD. But on a scale of 1 to 10...a solid 10.

Great songs, great covers, believe it or not, my least favorite is 'the best of times'..: p Good to see their sales increasing, they deserve it, especially in a time where album sales are slowing down.. And the reason is simple, good albums do get bought..!!
...and hopefully, the next time they decide to release a live dvd, they exceed 'score''s greatness, because their last release was a disgrace, thank god i downloaded it first, because i would still be regreting my euros..: p

They deserve it, this is an excellent album. But I see what some are saying about some of the lyrics...a little awkward and out of place, but that still doesn't take away from the greatness of the album.
Cheers

Great band!! Great album!!
I bought the 3-disc version.
I'm glad to see these guys are finally getting some recognition and seeing an increase in album sales with each release. People are finally discovering how great this band is.
This just goes to show if you respect your fans and stick to what you do instead of following trends and you put out good quality albums, people will support your band and buy your albums.
If you follow trends and put out crap, don't expect people to hand over their money to support you.

The other thing I love about Dream Theater is that they don't make their fans wait between 5 and 10 years for a new album or keep releasing different greatest hits CD's over and over.
They put out a great CD of new songs every other year.
They're definitely not KISS.

I used to really love these guys, but now it seems like they are just treading water.
If they aren't trying to sound like some band they're a fan of (okay Mike I heard A Nightmare to Remember, and I know that since you toured with Opeth you like death metal but that style of music doesn't belong in what DT does okay?) they're busy copying their own riffs.
Seriously the intro to A Nightmare.... sounds like a Dimmu Borgir outtake.

This album is fantastic from start to finish. Production, performance, structure, lyrics, they're all in there.
You can hate all you want but this band has been consistently bad ass since day one. I remember seeing them in 1991. It was virtually nothing but a room full of 200 or so mostly musicians coming out to see if this band could play the songs on their CD live. And the answer was hell-to-the-yeah they did! They've only gotten better since.
Those numbers are fantastic for a progressive metal band's first week sales in the US. America is so fad-oriented that we don't appreciate quality for any length of time. Oh well. I got mine bitches!

"America is so fad-oriented that we don't appreciate quality for any length of time. Oh well. I got mine bitches!"
Definitely agree. America's too worried about what's gonna sell ringtones, or be the catchiest, or be the best "club song", or whatever... substance or no. Just look at the top 10 music searches on myspace:
1 Lil Wayne 2 Taylor Swift 3 Gucci Mane 4 Beyonce 5 Eminem 6 Miley Cyrus 7 Akon 8 Flo Rida 9 Keri Hilson 10 T-Pain
The fact that most of the people searching those are in our country sickens and embarrasses me. I mean, at least T-Pain can be funny from time to time, but that's about it. I believe what we're seeing there is the power of advertising and mass corporate marketing at work.

Special 3 discs edition is cool but the package with cd sleeves idea suck. Nonetheless, you get a DT album with a instrumental version of it (who cares about instrumental) and a bonus disc with prog and metal covers. Too bad it's so short! Would've like to find Metallica song and a The Who "Won't get fooled" ... and more Deep Purple Made in Japan!
They do have the cheesy lyrics but this is in no way a surprise, and I personally loved all the cheese contained in Octavarium and Systematic Chaos

Just because DT toured with Opeth doesn't necessarily mean Mike likes death metal. To call Opeth mere death metal is to do them a grave disservice--they do have death metal elements, but are much more influenced by 70's prog rock.

I'm pretty sure he is a fan, though it's not his favourite genre. I'm almost certain he had the lastest Bloodbath album on his top 10 for last year.

The Count of Tuscany is the best thing they've written since Six Degrees. The rest of the new one is pretty much same ol' stuff they've been doing. Good but not great. Just my h.o.
