Bassist Allegedly Shoots Down SOUNDGARDEN Reunion Rumors - June 25, 2009
The Pulse of Radio reports: Ex-SOUNDGARDEN bassist Ben Shepherd allegedly commented on recent rumors that the band was planning to reunite through a text sent to a reader of music industry news site The Daily Swarm. Speculation about a reunion got kicked up a notch last week thanks to an interview in England with SHINEDOWN singer Brent Smith, who said that "someone specifically in (SOUNDGARDEN's) organization" had told him that the reunion was on. Why Smith was the beneficiary of this information was left unexplained, but when asked by text whether he knew SHINEDOWN or had anything to say about a reunion, Shepherd reportedly wrote, "No to knowing about whatever band and that guy should go fuck himself for cashing in on our name as well as saying things he doesnt know."

There's been no confirmation, however, that the author of the text message was actually Shepherd, making this even more confusing.

Shepherd, drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Kim Thayil did stage a partial reunion at a recent Tom Morello show in Seattle, playing a handful of SOUNDGARDEN songs with Tad Doyle singing.

Cameron now plays in PEARL JAM, while frontman Chris Cornell has worked with AUDIOSLAVE and as a solo artist since SOUNDGARDEN broke up in 1997.

Kerrang!'s interview with Brent Smith can be viewed below.

An inside source told The Pulse of Radio a couple of months ago that a SOUNDGARDEN reunion tour was in the works for the summer of 2010, and that all four members of the band were tentatively interested.

SOUNDGARDEN broke up in 1997 after a five-album, 12-year career. The group was one of the key acts of the Seattle "grunge" scene and one of its biggest exports, along with NIRVANA, PEARL JAM and ALICE IN CHAINS.

He didn't say a no, he said the guy from Shinedown should go fuck himself.

I think that will be the answer to any question I'm asked for the rest of today.

"Is that report ready?" "Who told you it is ready? The guy from Shinedown? He should go fuck himself!"

"Is that to stay or to go?" "Is the singer from Shinedown trying to cash in on my lunch? He should go fuck himself!"

Cornell's solo album tanked and and rightfully so. Fuck him for jumping on the Timberland bandwagon and putting out over produced dance bullshit. I wouldn't be suprised if there is a Soundgarden reunion at all.

Soundgarden was awful and a waste of time. The only good thing that came out of it was Chris Cornell. Chris is a great vocalist, but Soundgarden plainly stinks. Keep it dead guys. And again.... PLEASE NEVER, I MEAN NEVER, REUNITE! Thank you.

Until it happens, I shan't hold my breath on a Soundgarden reunion. I want it but it's not my call.

I could see maybe a handful of shows, but I can't see CC singing the old stuff for a whole tour. I don't think he could hit those notes every night.

Coincidentally, neither can Brent Smith.

Both great singers in the studio, though.

Now watch after being a dick and telling him to go fuck himself in like the next month or two there will be a press conference with Soundgarden reforming.

Really dug the first two albums and then for it went to Pop for me.

You know I lost A LOT respect for Mr. Shephard way to take things WAAAY out of context. The guy spends half the interview going on about how big of a fan of Soundgarden he is and how much they influenced him and how much he would love to play with them and watch them every night and this is what Mr. Shephard does to respond.

Fuck you Ben Shepard because Brent was speaking as a fan and basically you just told a fan to fuck himself. You sure are cool buddy.

as much as I loved Soundgarden, you missed nothing in the live arena. Sloppy as hell. I saw them twice in 1992. One was a headlining show at the Troc in Philly (OK, I was drunk as a skunk, so not a good show to judge) and then Lollapalooza in Scranton (sober as a judge). They really lived up to their rep as very ragged in a live setting...

....we don't even know it was Ben. There was someone on here a day or two ago claiming they were the dude in We Are The Fallen. It means nothing.

Second, what he probably meant by "cashing in", he didn't mean in the literal sense of getting paid money. He meant using their name and reputation and the obvious shock factor to get his band's name in the news by proclaiming to "know" what all SG fans want. And that is a reunion.

Whoever says SG sucks has the right to his opinion. Don't get why he'd bother posting on an article of a band he thinks sucks, but to each their own.

Chris Cornell's voice sucked in Audioslave live the first go round, then the second tour it was back in shape. His solo tour (before the awful solo record) it was better than I had EVER heard. Anyone who thinks his voice can't hold up to the old SG or Temple of the Dog material hasn't seen him live in at least 7 years.

rous out.

SOUNDGARDEN is reuniting in 2010.

Why is it that since they broke up in 1997 every time Chris Cornell was asked if they would ever get back together his answers were always "Absolutely Not!!", or "I want the memory of the band to stay as it was when we broke up." or "When we broke up we promised ourselves we never reunite"

Now over the past few months when he's asked the questions Chris has been saying things like "Ya' never know." or "It would be fun to do something again." or "We'll see what happens."

Plus, the other three guys performed together with Tad and Chris' response was "I wish I was there."

Now, I was born at night but it wasn't last night.

Once Chris Cornell is finished promoting his latest solo album SOUNDGARDEN will be resurrected.

This is starting to remind me of the Rob Halford/Judas Priest reunion back in 2004.

The whole world knew it was happening but their manager Jayne Andrews kept insisting for months that "The guys haven't spoken to Rob in years. I don't have any idea where these rumors are coming from?? Rob Halford is NOT rejoining Judas Priest"

Then she put out a press release denying that there was any such reunion in the works and it was nothing but internet rumors.

The official reunion announcement came about two weeks after the press release.

This asshole doesn't want to say or do anything to piss Cornell off. Without him, there is no reunion. This is your typical 'let's kiss the singer's ass' type of thing. Who gives a shit if this guy mentioned it? People were mentioning Roth in VH for what, 10 years?

I know so much about music that it saddens me when people try to classify Soundgarden as "good or acceptable music". If you're into headache inducing and no-talent, live playing, pseudo-musicians well thats your poison. Admit it, the only good thing from Soundgarden was Chris Cornell. With his solo gig he will never reunite with this dead fad ever. Would you reunite with the gabage you've thrown away years ago? I don't think so.

Soundgarden killed for so long and if they get back together i will buy/be there. i saw them over a dozen times and they were intense and on top of rock in every way. you 'youngins should listen and stop running your lack-thereof idiot mouths. Chris should not have made his last album. it sucks. but he has been trhough a lot of rough times and i don't blame him for experimenting.

I love it when people say soundgarden are terrible. That was the whole point of them wasnt it, being anti everything. songs like big dumb sex tell you everything you need to know about their opinion on the music of their peers. Brilliant band seen chris twice and he cal still sing the shit out of soundgarden stuff. It would be great
