VAN HALEN, QUEEN, POISON, VELVET REVOLVER Members Comment On MICHAEL JACKSON's Passing - June 25, 2009
Members of VAN HALEN, QUEEN, POISON, SHINEDOWN and VELVET REVOLVER have issued statements regarding the passing of pop music legend Michael Jackson, who died earlier today (Thursday, June 25) at age 50.

CNN.com reports that Michael collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time, suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said an autopsy would probably be done on the singer Friday, with results expected that afternoon.

VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen: "I am really shocked; as I'm sure the world is, to hear the news. I had the pleasure of working with Michael on 'Beat It' back in '83 — one of my fondest memories in my career. Michael will be missed and may he rest in peace."

QUEEN guitarist Brian May: "Hard to know what to say — what to feel. I find myself wondering what might have happened on his tour... The number of dates in the U.K. that he had committed to was insane. I did have a feeling it was impossible, but I was so shocked to hear that he went so suddenly. Very sad. Of course, I still think of him as a boy — he used to come and see us (QUEEN) play when we were on tour in the States, and he and Freddie [Mercury] became close friends, close enough to record a couple of tracks together at Michael's house. Tracks which have never seen the light of day. Michael was the boy star of the JACKSON FIVE, and always the most screamed at. I remember in their show, they tried very hard to make all the brothers equal in the presentation, but it was abundantly obvious that all most of the girl fans really wanted to see was little Michael. It was Michael who heard our track 'Another One Bites the Dust' when he came to see us on 'The Game' tour ... and told us we were mad if we didn't release it as a single." [Read more of May's thoughts at BrianMay.com]

POISON drummer Rikki Rockett: "Michael Jackson — huge loss!!! The words genius and musical are used in the same sentence too often. Not in the case of Michael Jackson. His musical expression will never be topped and his inspiration will live forever. R.I.P."

SHINEDOWN guitarist Zach Myers: "Sitting in a dressing room in Calgary, Canada I am more saddened than I can remember in maybe the last five years. Call the guy whatever you want... judge his actions, judge his judgments, and judge the man any way in any language you want. But Michael Jackson was the best. There was no one better. There never will be anyone better. People don’t try anymore. You can take any pretty loser who can't sing who has a good smile and sells records and make him a star. Just look at ANYONE on the charts today. Today we lost a part of music history, a legend, and the greatest pop music artist there ever will be. The things Michael created on 'Thriller', 'Off The Wall' and 'Bad' will never be matched. By anyone ever. Michael Jackson was the best. People believed in Michael Jackson who didn't believe in Jesus. And that, my friends, is a legend. God bless Michael Jackson's music, his soul, and his legend. That can never be replaced. Rest in peace, sir. God bless your soul."

VELVET REVOLVER/ex-GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash (Slash played guitar on two Michael Jackson singles, "Black or White" and "Give In to Me"): "Really sad news about Michael. He was a talent from on high."

Sad and tragic.

Obviously he was a very sick, mentally-damaged individual, mostly caused by the years of abuse suffered at the hands of his father.

I'm not excusing what he was accused of doing (if, in fact, he did do it), but the totality of his life story is incredibly sad. A tremendous talent never fully realized.

I disagree slightly that the talent was never fully realized. His talent and his art - fully realized and a million miles ahead of ANYONE in our time and generation...of any musical genre or style. Michael Jackson was bigger than the Beatles, bigger than Elvis...bigger than anyone in the history of recorded music.

He was a kook off the stage and outside of the studio, but there's just no denying that this guy was beyond dynamic on stage, in the studio, etc. He created the "art" of true Music Video, track layering, choreography, and music itself. I'd bet 99 of every 100 metalheads can name at least one song that's a guilty pleasure to them.

Huge loss to the music community.

MJ was iconic, and his contributions will outlive all of us.

This might be controversial, and it isn't my intent to cause it, but I also believe that he was innocent of the charges brought against him.
Yes, he was eccentric in some ways, but also misunderstood. Some of his behavior can be attributed to his lost childhood. That whole deal was a cash grab by people wanting to take advantage of his off-center image while leveraging blood-thirsty press to squeeze Michael. Possibly this will emerge now that he's gone.

His most popular music (Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad) was largely attributed to the synergy between himself and another musical genius, Quincy Jones. Without Quincy's musical gifts and Michael's vision, there would have been no Thriller... Michael wanted the horror show Thriller, he brought in Price. He wanted an edgy "Beat It" and brought in the best of the best, including EVH to give his music that feel.

Where Michael REALLY brought it was in the live performance and the imagery. It will NEVER be matched in pop music -- that era might actually be lost because of the way the internet has transformed the music industry.

What a loss. I wish I could take a trip back to 1983 and live the Thriller hype all over again, as a boy. RIP MJ, you were one of the best.

In one case, he was acquitted. In the other, he settled out of court on the advice of handlers who wanted to just end the whole drama, despite an accuser and his mother who seemed to lack any credibility at all -- (recall that these people were quickly labeled as 'grifters' out to con a rich and vulnerable man).

Then there are all the other children he had access to who NEVER made any complaints...

I'm inclined to believe Jackson was innocent of any criminal wrongdoing, but obviously guilty of poor judgment for ever having placed himself in such a risky position where he might be the target of some bogus lawsuit for easy money.

His talent was undeniable. Then again, so was his self-destructive bahavior. Nobody who earns that kind of money should ever be broke. The crazy spending, the plastic surgeries, the pills he was supposedly abusing, etc...

I get the earlier poster who said his talent was never fully realized. On 'Thriller' it was, but with his talent, there should have been more great records and tours, and less off-stage drama and controversy. Thriller was his peak, and it was a long, slow downhill fall after that.

As big as Jackson was, it seems he spent most of the last 25 years trying to escape the press, prove his innocence, or restart his career-- and less time just following in his own big footsteps established in the first half of his life.

Too bad.

a) MJ was unique. A phenomenal dancer, great entertainer, decent singer, had more than a handful of hits. He had charisma. There's no denying that. He was probably one of the most successful people in recent years, his sales, 3/4 of a billion ! That's mighty impressive !

b) michael jackson, by his own free will, put himself through a lot of un-natural and possibly health degrading unnecessary and uncalled for cosmetic operations, that may or may not have affected his over all health. Again, they may have caused him health problems, they may have not. The definably made him, stand out, not always in the best of light, and probably earned him the nickname Wacko Jacko. I mean, the guy altered his face, and his skin color. He almost self mutilated himself, with all these procedures ! If they have not damaged his health, they definitely didn't benefit it, or his psychological wellbeing - im sure !

c) musically MJ was on a steep decline since 01. Invincible, with a very respectable 2 million sales or so was deemed a failure and he fell out with his record company etc etc... faced the child molestation charges ...
things went really downhill from him, from that point onwards ! People didn't give much of a damn, at least not as much of a damn as when the guy was in the spotlight ! He became media fodder. Now people are weeping at his demise, pretending to have been standing by him all the way. It's pharisaic ...

d) fake autographs on ebay for 20k a pop -
surely some cash in hastily put together compilation
to commemorate the life and death of the poor guy, posthumously obviously .... but above all that huge tour,
he had planned - allegedly sold out, with very expensive tickets ....
he was a man on the doorstep of death, that finally passed the threshold, last night, a guy rumored to be have skin cancer, and someone actually tried to assist him to put on 50 very demanding shows and then undertake a tour of America too... ?!? For what ? money ??? Posterity ? I mean, if anyone - even half liked the guy and saw that he was unfit - they shouldn't have even suggested all this... they should have suggested that he takes care of himself... unless he was condemned ...

Death's the ultimate unswer to the ultimate question : Life.
No matter what we do or say, they guy passed and left his mark in popular culture. a lonely but shining star.

MJ was a very weird case. This guy was ONE OF A KIND ! There's no other quite like him.
May he rest in peace. Whatever.

No one should ever have to go through what he went through as a child, performing or otherwise. It seems in that performance Slash stole the scene and I read somewhere that Eddie put those guitar tracks on his album for free because he thought it wasn't going to go anywhere. I don't know if that is true or not but Michael Jackson was a twisted and tortured human being who just happened to make some of the most memorable music in history.

But he was simultaneously abused and catered to his whole life. Someone like that has zero clue as to how the real world works. I always felt sorry for him more than anything. But he'd been physically unwell for a while and when I heard about his death I wasn't really that surprised.

Also--yes, Steve Lukather did play on "Beat It" but Eddie Van Halen did the solo. EVH's sound is unmistakable.

Off the wall IS better, and J5 is better than that....I thought it was Rick Derrienger that played the Riff in Beat It?...The Beat it Solo, while I'm not dissing that, became the blue print for every lame 80's R&B pop solo after that, they all needed a Fast EVH style solo, all goofy watered down tapping solos.

my bad, it was Lukather.

Rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen, lead guitarist of hard rock band Van Halen, was then drafted in to add a guitar solo.[4][2] Upon being telephoned by Jones, requesting that the guitarist participate on the track, Van Halen thought he was receiving a prank call. Having established that the call was genuine, Van Halen recorded his guitar solo free of any charge. "I did it as a favour", the musician later said. "I was a complete fool, according to the rest of the band, our manager and everyone else. I was not used. I knew what I was doing - I don't do something unless I want to do it."[

Just look at Madonna today, although she's a great performer, her songs don't even come close to the masterpieces of Michael Jackson..!

wouldn't you? he realized it would drag on forever, with all the fucking loser gold diggers coming out of the woodwork telling their "stories". The guy was fucked up, but I don't believe he did anything that would constitute it being molestation.

How do I know this? The same way you idiots "know" that he did it! All speculation! Was he ever convicted of anything? NOPE.

Ask the hundreds of kids he helped, and made their dreams come true by visiting his ranch. Ask Macaulay Culkin!

Thriller the album is Metal. No it doesnt have blast beats, cookie monster vocals and a pentagram. But its imagery and presence is the dark symmetry if metal could be physical and attracted me before I discovered metal. Low and behold Eddie Van halen plays on it. and to take it a step further Slash made later guest apperances as well. Was Micheal Metal? No! But was the thriller album? Yes. Just like Queen wasnt thrash or punk however "stone cold crazy" and "sheer heart attack" could make you question that opinion. There must be found a mutual respect for crossing over to our side.

....but using the argument of record sales means nothing. Look at Britney, and all those other hacks out there that can't write a lick of music on their own.

I'm guessing Oliver Stone will be doing a movie called "Michael", with Prince in the lead role, standing on a stool the whole movie.

Wikopedia. But I've read Eddie talk about that many times, & how Quincy Jones called him & he told him to F off cuz he didn't believe it was QJ....and how Jacko told both EVH & Slash "Play the high notes, I love the high notes. So does Bubbles & Blanket...and Emanuel did too".

That was all he could do when he was feeling bad about DLR upstaging him, play on a MJ record. Thank God Sammy came along and finally propelled the band Van Halen into the spotlight, so we could all forget about that very week moment in time.

Sorry Michael, but Eddie make like MJ and "Beat It"

Since you have nothing else to do?

not week...yeah, VH was a minor act, just getting by til the Red Popper took over. No one had heard of EVH, except a Bubbles, who informed Jacko of EVH. Word has it the Chimp would go wild when Jacko would crank Fairwarning n 1981...one time, while dropping the needle on VHII, Quincy Jones stopped by. While tapping his foot to "Bottoms Up", he said "why is Bubbles going so wild?"....retorted a sheepish Jacko "why Quincy, Bubbles loves the High Notes, he loves this Eddie Van Halen"...QJ at that moment knew, if he couldn't have DLR on the album, he'd get EVH & his high notes. The rest is history.

Of course when Emanuel Lewis was over, Jacko would play the radio on the latest pop station, hoping to hear "Don't stop til you get enough" to impress his latest conquest. HEre & there they'd hear "Your love & driving me crazy" or "I've done everything for you" in between some Kenny Loggins, .38 Special & Juice Newton. At this point Bubbles would get in such an aggitated state, defecating in his Chimp Diapers & tossing the hot mess at the radio. His ass all chaffed & red...hence the "Red "rocker"". the term "Rocker" in this case is quite presumptious & too kind....

Legend has it Webster then took his pistol out & shot the radio to bits, hoping to never hear Pop Music taken to new lows. (it did get worse, as the Red Popper released a faux rocker "I can't drive 55", showing he was probably better as a pop star)...they all returned to truly rockin', as Jacko went to the turn table & CRANKED Women & Children First at blistering volume. Jacko loved his "Romeo Delight".

When Bubbles heard this Red Popper had joined EvH, Jacko had to sedate the poor primate, wrapping his ears & calming him by whispering "They will return to rocking again someday".

Dear schenker's liquor, DeadSkin Mask, Neil Young's Cocaine Booger, and the others who have shown just how pathetic you are. Yeah, Michael Jackson isn't metal, and he was accused of child molestation (which he was proven to be not guilty of), so why is he on this site? Maybe for the same reason all of the other bands who aren't metal are on here. Stop and take a look at how abusive his childhood was and have a little compassion. Yeah, he was weird, so are a lot of the douchebags in all of your favorite bands. What M J did for music was unforgettable and his legacy will not be matched ever again. Making degrading jokes like this just shows how pathetic your lives are sitting at your computers in your mom's basements jerking off and reading blabbermouth. No one here is laughing with you, but plenty are laughing at you. What the fuck did you ever do that isn't worth pissing on?

"Why can't you share your bed? The most loving thing to do is to share your bed with someone. It's very charming. It's very sweet. It's what the whole world should do."

Everyone is so hateful and negative, that a statement like this can't be said without thoughts of sex and pedophilia. Don't you think that letting a nother person sleep where you sleep is kind and sweet? Probably not. But just because your head is filled with violence and sex doesn't mean everyones is. Michael Jackson was a really upset guy because he had no childhood. Maybe thats why he opened a park at his home and called it neverland. Where you don't grow up.

What MJ could be doing is being kind to others, Kids that have told on MJ were grown up and not kids anymore, there parents or gaurdians could have provoked the aligations against him. Kids are usually sweet when young, but like everyone knows, can be real mean or nasty when entering their teens.

or Neverland could have been one big pedifile trap to lure small kids into his bed. We wil never know.

Rest in pease "King Of Pop"
