DREAM THEATER Drummer Reveals Top 5 Metal Bands Of All Time; Video Available - June 28, 2009
Roadrunner Records has uploaded video footage of DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy revealing and discussing his "top five metal bands of all time." Watch the seven-minute clip below.

Portnoy's top five metal bands of all time are as follows:

01. BLACK SABBATH
02. IRON MAIDEN
03. METALLICA
04. SLAYER
05. OPETH

According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, the new album from DREAM THEATER, entitled "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", is on track to sell between 35,000 and 40,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release.

DREAM THEATER's last CD, "Systematic Chaos", opened with 36,000 units in 2007 to enter The Billboard 200 chart at No. 19. 2005's "Octavarium" premiered with 27,000 copies to debut at No. 36.

In addition to the standard-version CD, DREAM THEATER's tenth studio album, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", was also made available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc, special-edition CD that includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.

Not all that bad really. Can't top the classics, and Opeth is my favourite band of all time. That being said, I'd probably bump Sabbath and Slayer down to #6 and 7, and replace them with Megadeth and Queensryche, with At The Gates, Emperor, and Pantera/Testament/Anthrax rounding out the 10. Of course, Dream Theater is top 15 material themselves.

and maybe Master of Puppets by Metallica, its the only album i realy like by them.
but agree with him on Opteh, they are great!! and i would even have put Katatonia there also but like i said there are so many bands, you could put a list of 20-30 bands or more and not is any particular order

opeth is so great because they dont sound like every other shitty metal band out there who sound like carbon copies of eachother. Also theyre all actually musicians in the true sense of the word. they listen to much more than just metal and arent afraid to show it in their music so they transcend into much more diverse ground and do it very well and very tastefully. you dont have to be their biggest fan, and i get it if theyre not for you, but if you cant see my point, me thinks you dont know shit about music. and id love to hear your brillant top 5

aside from that id go with
1. black sabbath
2. iron maiden/judas priest
3. metallica
4. pantera
5. opeth as an obscure choice absolutely, but classically id go with slayer

I think Sabbath is the dark horse here. You never hear DT covering or giving any accolades to Sabbath or any of its members in interviews or covering any of their songs. I thought Maiden would be in first and Priest second (MP always said Priest and Maiden were the two bands they jammed on all the time). Not surprised about Opeth unlike a lot of people just due to how much MP adores them and loves playing with them on tour. I think the other surprise here is Slayer. Though they cover a snippet of Reign In Blood live from time to time, I would have thought that if anyone were going in here from the thrash genre it would be Megadeth. They toured together on the first Gigantour, plus Megadeth's style is a bit more progressive than Slayer's, who, while still amazing musicians, just overpower the fuck out of a song rather than change dynamics much throughout it.

Overall, very good--if not too shocking--a list.

have ever actually listened to Opeth???? it doesnt seems so. and Metallica didnt to nearly as much for metal as Black Sabbath, Metallica made people like One and nothing else matters and songs like that, and the most of the people who bought the black album only have the black album and maybe listen to these songs and enter sandman and if they hear another metal band they think its sucks because its not on the radio.
but you have to have bands like Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, Hawkwind and many others that not a lot of people know about.
and im not sure any grunge band count except Soundgarden or Alice in Chains, but grunge was just some advertising word for the Seattle scene, if Nirvana was grunge then all the other bands arent grunge.
yea and naming Nickelback here on this site is just plain stupid, they are just some typical commercial shit, similar to Creed, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and crappy bands like that

2. Led Zeppelin (same as Sabbath, but with a little less edge)
3. Metallica (The Led Zep of my generation, and are to modern metal bands what Sabbath and Zep were to them)
4. Iron Maiden (Enough said)
5. Megadeth (Unfortunately forced to stay in Metallica's shadow, and like Metallica, has one god awful album, Risk/Metallica's St. Anger, and one sub-par yet better-than-their-worst album, The World Needs A Hero/Metallica's ReLoad)

Somebody listed AC/DC, and as big of an AC/DC freak as I am, I cannot put them on this list because they are not a Metal band. If this was a list of all-time bands in general, AC/DC would be very high on that list.

I would say these are the top 5 PIONEERING Metal bands:

Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Metallica
Pantera
Black Sabbath

But the Top 5 of all time would look different to me. Those would include bands that take metal above and beyond where the pioneers took it.

Nevermore
Necrophagist
Decapitated
Suffocation
Pantera

Thats probably what it would look like to me...I think I'm giving a lot more credit to the bands that are truly great by their own merits instead of great because thats what is common knowledge.

Dude, how can you say Opeth fans must not know anything about music? You are a stupid little bitch.. Opeth are twenty years ahead of your pussy ass Godsmack who are only a run-of-the-mill rock band. I thought Portnoy's list was accurate and exact. Every band on that list has contributed to the art in a very big way.. Opeth's influence has yet to be fully realized but it will be in time. So you stupid ass know-nothings on here that wanna bitch about Opeth make me sick. Stick to little radio rock and leave the real music to us people who know it. I'm a musician myself and I will tell you that all the bands that he listed were ground-breaking and ahead of the pack in their time.. To not have Black Sabbath as number one would have been sacrilage. They only created Heavy Metal. And I'm sorry but Zeppelin were not metal, though they were a great rock band, but the use of blues scales instead of minors is the reason they didn't sound as dark and brooding as Sabbath. Like Sabbath, Opeth are breaking new ground. The asshole that said they sound like everyone else is either deaf or incredibly stupid and should never post another opinion on a topic he knows nothing about.. You shouldn't even be on this site if you like Nickelback anyway.. This ain't your momma's website bitches.. This is for metal people not clear radio worshippers who believe that Nickelcrack is groundbreaking. Your very opinion makes me doubt the human race as a sustainable life-form..BTW, What the hell is wrong with signing to Roadrunner? They only gave us great bands over the years such as Sepultura, Machine Head, Chimaira, King Diamond, Diecide, Life of Agony, Soulfly, etc.. Too many to name over the years. But, all these bands we loved came from roadrunner too. Not just from all the other labels. I love and support any label that's gonna put out extreme music I don't care who else is on the fucking roster... So what if they have a cash cow? You assholes are so fickle. Stop being whiny bitches and don't ever post an opinion when you are an idiot.. Mr. Bleh, You are an imbecile and should never be on this site again.. How dare you call this YOUR internet.. Who the fuck do you think you are? Al Gore? Shut your fucking mouth Bitch!!!!!!! This site is for real metal not your lame-ass radio rock.. GET OFF OUR SITE!!! And don't come back, ya hear?

I deeply regret buying this new album. All the songs
seem to suck. 10 minute songs for the sake of being 10 minute long. Who the hell told Portnoy he can sing ?
I thought i was listening to a bad version Sacred Reich at some point.... also on another note Labrie should be let go, he's SO burnt out.... every time he reaches a higher note i have to reach for an aspirin and earmuffs...
They were bad in Sweden Rock. The covers, while primarily good choices, are butchered.....did they record these in an afternoon ? The production is .... thin ? it screams CHEAP ! for all his chops, the keyboardist is the most unimaginative one they had... and i mean... they have fanboys that will blindly guy anything these guys will put out.... which is sad...

and hip-h-opeth is a really tiresome band... to claim that they are one of the top 5 bands of all time.... oh... means he'd be leaving say kansas, rush, priest and a myriad others outside that lofty top....

Top XX's are for morons ! Usually also compiled by people who feel that they got some sort of divine judgement too ....

Question: How many of you who commented here actually watched the clip and listened to Mike explain his choices? This list is bands that influenced him and had an affect on him. How can anyone argue that or say that his list is wrong? It's what influenced him.

Mike threw Opeth in even though he said he wouldn't. But also said that there is a quality to Opeth that moves him. And I have to say that I agree.

Opeth may not be everyone's cup of tea and maybe they're a musicians band, don't know. A lot of people like them, they're very popular here in Finland, and I know that people on Blabbermouth have praised them long before Watershed. I mean I used to read stuff about them here before I even got into them, and It seemed that alot of people were really passionate about their music. I listened to Blackwater Park and didn't really like it initially. Then, at some point, I listened to Ghost Reveries and thought it was good. After that I went back to Blackwater Park and it blew me away. So Opeth's music is not easy to get into at first, especially if prog music is not something you listen to already. The songs are complex and there is so much to them, which is why I like them so much.

My top 5 metal bands would be:
Metallica
Amorphis
Prong (if you can classify them as metal)
Slayer
Carcass

Top 5 right now:
Absu
Bloodbath
Samael
Death Angel
Ihsahn (especially Angl)

Dream Theater is also about being a little pretentious and over the top but Petrucci has more soul in his playing then most people have.
why is it always that people with no talent say people with great talent have no soul. if you watch Dream Theater live you can see they have more fun and more soul then most bands have.

and does noone mention Overkill here??? they are a great metal band. and Metallica only sold more albums then the others because they are obviously the most likely band to do so, Hetfields voice is more commercial then any of the others and music too.

2009 they have finally hit some success and are still making amazing albums but a majority hate them...

As an Opeth fan since 1996 (yep Morningrise was my first) saying they are anything but talented even if you don't care for the music proves you honestly know nothing about musicianship.

Also debating someone's top 5 band list is stupid do you want everyone in the world to have the same top 5 as you? Oh wait probably so since a majority of society these days is happy living homogenized lives like every other person.

exactly and Opeth are far from mainstream, if they would have made another album like Damnation straightaway then maybe you people could have called them sellouts or whatever but they went straight back to progressive death metal and their last 2 albums are arguably their best.

incorporating the influence of certain bands into the decision. I think Sabbath gets put in mostly for their influence- I for one wouldn't put them #1 for best music. And yeah, I'm one of those people who just doesn't get all the Opeth love- they're obviously talented, but I'm not a fan, although I've tried. Hard to argue with the first 4, although I could argue the order, and at #5 I would maybe put in a band like Death, Cynic, or At The Gates for their music and influence. I know Cynic really only has 1 death metal release, but are there any song titles from Focus that aren't now bands, inspired by Cynic? Napalm Death, Venom and Judas Priest would also be contenders, but I'm not as big of a fan of their music as the others I mentioned. Also, Motorhead, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, and Entombed deserve mention.

Opeth is still quite a recent band compared to the others on the list, so it's reasonable to expect that they're going to provoke some controversy. I expected maybe Pantera or something, although to be honest Pantera's eighties albums are very hit and miss (but most folks just pretend they don't exist anyway I guess).

As for Opeth, I enjoy them a lot, but have to be in the mood for them. They certainly don't bore me like a lot of extreme metal bands do, who pretty much just rewrite the same three minute song over and over again, but nor do they use precision just for the sake of it. They have a nice array of influences too. The only thing I'll say against them is that their technicality is less entertaining live. There's no room for improv, so it can sometimes get tedious because they play exactly what you've heard on the CD. There's no surprise or adventure there, but this is true of most bands from the eighties onwards though. Lyrically I don't think they're first rate either. Mind you, neither is Slayer, but their lyrics do have good unintentional-comedy value.

I can't believe this thread is going to get over 100 posts...

And I guess because everyone else is doing it, I'll do it, too. In no particular order:

Megadeth (older)
Testament
Fear Factory
Cradle (older)
NIN

"With the exception of a small handful, you people make me fucking sick."

One of the best comments here and totally agree with you.

And blahmouthbleh if you don't UNDERSTAND Opeth's music, if it is too much for you don't insult the band and the ones who like their music.

Hey! Put your fingers in your ass and rip yourself apart ( just anticipating insults eheh!).

Blahmouthbleh or whatever, You suck!! As you can see, you've inticed alot of people to tell you so.. You should never comment on things that you don't understand.. Long live Mikael Akerfeldt and Opeth: The most brilliant band of this shitty generation.. Now I also have to put my influences in two catagories..
Classic:
Black Sabbath
Metallica (old)
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Death

Current:
Opeth
Cannibal Corpse
Throwdown
Chimaira/Bloodbath tie
Lamb of God
I know that alot of you would never have this list but this is just what I like. Everyone should have a different one cause that's what makes the world go round.. Like someone said earlier, what kind of world would it be if everyone had the same.. Long live metal and the people who support OUR art. May it forever invoke passion to those of us who understand it..

Look, bedwetter, unlike you, I've been reading Blabbermouth since day one (I think Borivoij Krgin started it all in 1999) and commenting here for years - and trust me: other long time posters like "madeinquebec" have forgotten more about metal than you will ever learn.

Reading your retarded gibberish, it's pretty safe to say that you're just a loudmouth adolescent with no clue about this genre. And since there are more than enough other morons like you on this site, please do us a favour and piss off.

On a more positive note: good to see "The Holy Ferret" posting here from time to time.

Btw: Does anybody know what happened to

Who?

They're are a trashy - oops! I mean thrashy group of girls who had a CD 'Roadkill' and I was lucky to get a used copy. They're on the L'amour Rocks compilation with other bands that played that NY venue. Oh, what else have I forgot? Oh yeah! Mike is married to one of their members as is 2 of the other DT guys.

Really I wouldn't say they are in the top 5 (maybe Mike shoulda!) but they are very good. I see that there are some YouTube clips of them now, so now the average Headbanger can check em out.

"Slayer, who, while still amazing musicians, just overpower the fuck out of a song rather than change dynamics much throughout it."

Might be the most simply accurate description of Slayer I've ever heard. LOL. Slayer rules.

I don't care who are the other four, but Black Sabbath *has* to be first; every fuckin' band you people listed owes something to Black Sabbath: Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Slayer, and every other heavy metal and hard rock band. To say that bands like Iron Maiden or even Priest (and BTW I love both) have contributed more to heavy metal it's no less than a fuckin' blasphemy.
