GORGOROTH's PEST Replaces GAAHL's Vocals On 'True Norwegian Black Metal' Album - June 29, 2009
Norwegian black metallers GORGOROTH recently spent time at Threeman Recordings in Stockholm with producer Nico Elgstrand (ENTOMBED). During the sessions, GORGOROTH frontman Pest replaced Gaahl's vocals for the "True Norwegian Black Metal - Live in Grieghallen" album, which was originally released in June 2008 via Regain Records. According to a posting on the group's web site, GORGOROTH mainman Infernus (guitar) "has already consulted legal representatives regarding this album, and is prepared to support Regain Records in the label's ongoing legal conflict with two of the band's ex-members, if any such support is needed."

The recording of GORGOROTH's new studio album "Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt" is proceeding on schedule, with a tentative October 2009 release date. The album will be made available via Sweden's Regain Records.

The 2009 incarnation of GORGOROTH consists of Pest (vocals), Infernus (guitar), Tormentor (guitars), Frank Watkins (bass) and Tomas Asklund (drums).

Infernus recently won a court battle against vocalist Gaahl and bassist King ov Hell over the rights to the GORGOROTH band name. According to a posting on Infernus' MySpace page, "The court has decided that King ov Hell's trademark registration of the band name GORGOROTH is NOT valid and shall therefore be deleted. The court states that King ov Hell and Gaahl excluded themselves from the band GORGOROTH when they tried to fire Infernus in October 2007. The court further states that Infernus cannot be excluded from GORGOROTH, unless he himself decides to quit."

Infernus filed a lawsuit against King ov Hell in September 2008 claiming that King (the sixth bass player in GORGOROTH's history) went behind his back in September 2007 and secretly applied for trademark protection of the GORGOROTH bandname and logo, which Infernus had been using since 1992.

"Live in Grieghallen" was recorded live at Grieghallen in Bergen, Norway by Eirik "Pytten" Hundvin and features Infernus on bass and guitar, Gaahl on vocals, and Garghuf on drums.

"Live in Grieghallen" was mixed and mastered by Nico Elgstrand (ENTOMBED) and features all the GORGOROTH "essential songs" from the band's back catalog performed live.

"Live in Grieghallen" track listing:

01. Bergtrollets Hevn
02. Destroyer
03. The Rite of Infernal Invocation
04. Forces of Satan Storms
05. Possessed (by Satan)
06. Unchain My Heart!!!
07. Profetens Ã…penbaring
08. Revelation of Doom

Recording lineup:

Infernus - Guitar, Bass
Gaahl - Vocals
Teloch - Session Guitar
Garghuf - Session Drums

Album info:

All music and lyrics by Infernus, except track 1 (lyrics by Hat), track 2 (music by Tormentor) and track 4 (music by King). Recorded live in studio in 2007/2008. Engineered by Pytten at Grieghallen Studios in Bergen and Nico Elgstrand at Threeman Recordings in Stockholm. All bass re-recorded by Infernus at Threeman Recordings. Mixed by Nico Elgstrand. How can Infernus play guitar AND bass on a LIVE album?

I've never heard of someone getting replaced on a live album before.

Now, Infernus should have Pest re-record the vocals on the track "Destroyer", as well as all of Incipit Satan, Twilight of the Idols, and Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam, as well as replace the bass.

Gaahl and King bite shit.

As much as I agree that Infernus is the true Gorgoroth and King and Gaahl are douchebags, re-recording AMSG and TOTI without them would be taking it too far. King and Gaahl wrote all or most of those albums. That being said, I'm glad justice was served and Infernus got Gorgoroth back.

Imagine if he said something along the lines "Its great to be here, Grieghallen"... pretty paradoxal.

But that's not very black metal, I guess.

It is a LIVE IN THE STUDIO album. Not an actual "Live" album in front of an audience. Grieghallen is a theatre, but it also serves as a studio for bands to record music. I believe Emperor recorded Anthems there too.

detective Rosanegra, yes that is Frank Watkins from Obituary. He has been friends with Infernus for quite some time and has been with the band since late 2007.

Look at that jackass . . . you guys take this bullshit seriously?

"black metal" . . . what a complete fucking joke.

This is what people do when they can't write songs. They invent some totally ridiculous costumes and tell us all how scaaaaarry they are.

But Angry Johnny's post really makes me wonder about what people are thinking about when they type posts like his. All I can see in my head when I read that is a special ed. dropout trying to express his opinion.

I would love to hear of a few of your favorite bands...I'm sure you've got some real gems in your collection. Who beat who out for the CD player today, Disturbed or Linkin Park?

Audience or no audience... if it's live, he sholdn't be able to play both instruments. Unless, of course, he switches inbetween songs, but, in that case, ther should also be another bass player. Or are there songs with no bass?

ok this article makes NO sense!

it says Gaahls vocals were replaced by Pests; but then why at the bottom the recording lie-up states this?

Recording lineup:

Infernus - Guitar, Bass
Gaahl - Vocals
Teloch - Session Guitar
Garghuf - Session Drums

From the statement: "Infernus has already consulted legal representatives regarding this album, and is prepared to support Regain Records in the label's ongoing legal conflict with two of the band's ex-members, if any such support is needed."

I expect the ongoing legal conflict between Regain and Gaahl/King is one of the reasons that the vocals have been redone, so as to be able to go around the temporary injunction which has stopped the distibution of the album. Without Gaahl's vocals and King's bass on it I don't see how Gaahl/King can get the court to stop the album from being released. That's my take on it, anyway. And I am really looking forward to the new version!

Now the "live" album is complete! With Pest back in the band, this should sound even better. I never really liked the albums with Gaahl in the band. The 3 big G albums are: Pentagram, Antichrist & Under the Sign of Hell. The rest IMO are just coaster cd's! They didn't slice the flesh as much as the Almighty 3!

Get Pest to redo all of Gaahl's parts on all previous releases; that would piss him off totally. Make those re-recordings available for free online so no one complains about buying the whole catalogue back.

Replacing the vocals and bass - what a loser. Like the debacle that is now Ozzy's 1st two albums. Nice move crybaby.

I know all you support Infernus because you either can only see things in black and white ("he is an original member, *cry* *cry*") or are all homophobes, but original member or not, Infernus was a lazy scumbag that needed to get kicked out of the band because he wasn't pulling his weight anymore. If you become useless, original member or not, it's time to go.

And I know you want to re-write history, but anyone around in the early days knows that their 1st 3 albums have their moments but were really 2nd tier at best - they were never as good as Immortal or Darkthrone or any of the other major Norwegian bands and they only got realy good and got a sizable audience when they got a proper frontman - Gaahl.

If it wasn't for Gaahl (and King Ov Hell), Gorgoroth would have just been a 3rd rate has-been cult band like Dark Funeral or Ancient are now. Infernus owes his future career to Gaahl who was an imposing singer with massive presence on and off stage. His public persona is the only reason why they have a large portion of their audience and a name in the Metal media. Otherwise no one would have cared anymore.

The only way Gorgoroth will succeed is because they have the name (which many people know because of publicity Gaahl created) and they will get to open for Obituary on tour because they share members. The new music will be 2nd rate as usual. Good luck going up against God Seed Infernus - you are going to need it.
