DREAM THEATER: 'Black Clouds' Track-By-Track Breakdown With MIKE PORTNOY - June 29, 2009
DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy recently took U.K.'s Total Guitar magazine track by track through the band's newly released album, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings". Watch the six-and-a-half-minute clipe below.

According to Hits Daily Double, the companion web site of music industry tip sheet HITS, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" is on track to sell between 35,000 and 40,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release.

DREAM THEATER's last CD, "Systematic Chaos", opened with 36,000 units in 2007 to enter The Billboard 200 chart at No. 19. 2005's "Octavarium" premiered with 27,000 copies to debut at No. 36.

In addition to the standard-version CD, DREAM THEATER's tenth studio album, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings", was also made available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc, special-edition CD that includes the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs.

It's an excellent album in my opinion, a solid 9.5/10. I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it the day after it was released, and I strongly encourage everyone to check it out if you haven't already.

IMO this is their best "album" since Scenes From A Memory. Each album after Scenes had some good songs but in their entirety lacked cohesiveness.

By the way this is the first interview I have seen with Portnoy in a long while where he's doesn't come off as a pompous douche.

BRAVO!!

Great album, but A Rite of Passage totally prevents this from being a GREAT album if you know what I mean. Can anyone explain why the production is so much worse on that song compared to the rest of the album? It has it's moments, but not DT's best.

A Nightmare To Remember drags the album down a lot, MP should really stop doing vocals.

a nightmare to remember is beast, i know what you mean about the bit with the vocals with a rhythmicness that reminds me of cradle, I much prefer MP to dani filth though

This album is so damn great! I agree with the dude that said it's the best thing since Scenes. A Rite of Passage is the weakest song, but A Nightmare to Remember and The Count of Tuscany are just so damn awesome that you kinda forget about it.

A great album and a seminal improvement from Systematic Chaos (even though The Best of Times' lyrics give the words "cheesy lyrics" a whole new meaning haha).

I have to disagree with everyone here. Prog by numbers. They are so supposed to be a prog band. There is nothing on this album that they haven't done previously. It is technically brilliant as you'd expect but the songwriting is generic. They need to rip it up and start from scratch. They need a switch of emphasis. Like Rush had when they left the guitar oriented rock behind for more layered offerings such as moving pictures and signals. DT NEED to try something different.

oh well, in my humble opinion, thats bolocks XD, yeah they reference their previous ideas, but usually when theres a relationship between the songs, I think their song writing has stepped up a notch, and is less technical, its like they're not trying anymore, but its freed them up to just write beast songs

The lyrics on this album are bad...not just everyday bad, but laughably bad! I am stunned by their badness. People bitched about the fantasy lyrics on Systematic Chaos, but at least they weren't rubbish. I swear, the lyrics on DC&SL sound like they were written by a high school sophomore, and not one whose at the top of his English class. They're obvious and clumsy.

The worst offenders are Shattered Fortress, Best of Times, and Count of Tuscany. I know they're drawn from real-life experiences, but that doesn't give them a free pass. Lyrically, they suck. Shattered Fortress is just a bunch of AA lingo strung together, Best of Times is about as deep as my kids' baby pool, and Count of Tuscany is just about as unintentionally funny as it can get, what with all the "I'm afraid for my life, there must be some mistake, give me one more chance" malarkey.

OK, rant over. Again, big DT fan here, and lyrics have never been the strong point of this band, but at least they've usually been passable, and sometimes actually good. What the hell happened here?

Is it any mystery why they released the instrumental only version? I think they know the lyrics are nonsense...

He seems like a good dude here and when he is off stage but once he gets on stage it seems his "confidence" comes across wrong or something at least IMO. Nevertheless he is just a little bit of a douche to watch live. Some guys are interesting to watch live and unfortunately he is NOT ONE OF THEM. Greta drummer to listen to but looks like a complete arrogant toolbox live. Wish I could explain it better.

I have always said that you either LOVE or HATE this band.
Personally I have been a fan since Images and Words and I think BC&SL is another excellent album from a band that has never really released anything less than excellent material.
While other bands change their sound or break up all together, Dream Theater has been cohesive for 20+ years.
It's just a shame that people feel the need to break them down and bash their albums just because they are incapable of judging the material on it's own and not based on previous albums or whatever the case may be.
