THIN LIZZY Parts Ways With Guitarist/Vocalist JOHN SYKES
- July 1, 2009
|
|
THIN LIZZY's management company has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the band has parted ways with guitarist/vocalist John Sykes. Commented THIN LIZZY guitarist and mainstay Scott Gorham: "It's been a very tough time of late for myself and the band, firstly with drummer Tommy Aldridge's injury and now the subsequent decision for John and the rest of the group to go their separate ways. I can only apologize to everyone who has supported us over the years, but we will be back up to full speed soon." Gorham intends to announce future plans for THIN LIZZY shortly. All previously announced THIN LIZZY shows will be canceled or postponed until further notice. THIN LIZZY's most recent touring lineup was as follows: Scott Gorham - Guitar John Sykes - Vocals, Guitar Tommy Aldridge - Drums Francesco DiCosmo - Bass "Still Dangerous: Live At The Tower Theater Philadelphia 1977", the newly discovered THIN LIZZY live album featuring the band's quintessential lineup — Phil Lynott, lead vocals/bass; Scott Gorham, guitar; Brian Robertson, guitar; Brian Downey, drums — was released on March 3 via VH1 Classic Records THIN LIZZY roared out of the 1969 Dublin, Ireland pub scene. Their sound was crystallized in the 1976 anthem "The Boys Are Back In Town". With Lynott's intricate wordplay and those two lead guitarists, a template for '70s hard rock was cast in stone. In 1978, they released "Live And Dangerous", thought to be one of the all-time great live rock albums. Seen as a companion volume, the new live album contains two songs not found on "Live And Dangerous" — "Soldier Of Fortune" and "Opium Trail" — alongside such Lynott-authored classics as "Dancing In The Moonlight", "Jailbreak" and "Don't Believe A Word". This long-lost concert CD pulled legendary producer Glyn Johns ( LED ZEPPELIN, THE ROLLING STONES) out of retirement to remix and remaster. THIN LIZZY performing in Munich, Germany - October 2008:

TIME TO HANG IT UP!
John Sykes is a god amongst pretenders. He did an awesome job both on guitar and vocals, and they think they can just replace him with someone else? They'll just trash whatever's left of their legacy.

Skyes sucked anyway and he is a complete ass. he only played on the tail end of the Phil days and he sucked. Saw them live a few times with John as the tribute and he did no justice for the songs at all. Scott is the only true member anyway. but with that said, there nothing without Phil anyway, so maybe Scott should just hang it up anyway.

I was OK with this "version" of Lizzy cuz it was keeping Phil's music alive & out there, but the further it gets from the original band the weaker it gets. What could the future plans be? I'm sure there's guys out there that could do a good Phil, but c'mon already.

Sykes should have played the rest of the dates and just sucked it up while doing so. I mean really he should have thought of how much planning was made for people to go to rocklahoma, i mean jesus your fronting one of the most classic bands ever show the fans some respect! Then after all the dates have been played he could quit

Not to mention, Robbo sounds like a bucket of ass now days. I also have that abortion of a concert in Australia, with Moore and some spare on drums. Well, at least i got to see them a couple of times. RIP lizzy, RIP phil.

Sykes has got to be one of the most underrated guitarists. He's an absolute monster and gives the TL songs a swift kick in the ass. Did the same thing to the Euro version of Slide It In. Let's hope this just hastens the Blue Murder reunion!! You've done an honorable job of keeping the music of Phil alive, John. Maybe it's time that JS and DC bury the hatchet.

John Sykes owns the name Thin Lizzy. Phil's mom gave it to him years ago, with clauses. You need two members of Thin Lizzy to go out as Thin Lizzy. Which means John when home with the ball. So since John and Scott have been doing Thin Lizzy for a little over 10 yrs means John and Scott were probably fighting over something stupid.
Stop talking that Sykes sucks cuz he doesn't and everyone knows it. Stop talking about Scott doing something more with Thin Lizzy cuz he can't. Stop comparing the Phil tribute band to the real band which has been gone since 1983!!!!
I hate the non-sense on Blabbermouth. They just report the news and you people NEVER just give an opinion.

There's no doubt that John is a great guitarist and breathed a bit of life into Thin Lizzy at the end. I saw the Gorham / Sykes tribute a few times and really enjoyed it. But it's REALLY not Thin Lizzy without Phil, and Scott going on by himself is a bit silly. What if Snowy White or Gary Moore decided to start their own versions of "Thin Lizzy" too? This is the type of nonsense that is going on with Wishbone Ash...

Is the only option, sorry but it's that or nothing. If you don't like it that's OK. In this case I think something is better than nothing. I don't think anybody is getting ripped off by showing up expecting to see Phil. John did a great job singing like Philip using his tone and phrasing and he is not an ass, I have met him several times and he was always polite and accomodating. I am glad to see Scott play anytime, whatever the occasion. I would love to see Brian Downey return but I wouldn't hold my breath. The Gary Moore thing was good but much less similar to the live Lizzy sound than the current Thin Lizzy.

John Sykes did a great job replacing Phil, because he treated it like a tribute band, and not like he was to take the place of Phil. I'd wish they would grow up (Phil and/or Scott), and carry on with the legacy of Thin Lizzy......
But if someone should replace him, it could be a good choice to get Gary Moore, or if you ask me John Norum (of Europe), who is a huge Thin Lizzy fan, and have covered quit a few Thin Lizzy classix in his time, han have done a great job...and he has a voice in the same range as Phil and John.....but would he leave Europe for Thin Lizzy?????

I never really bought the whole Gorham/Sykes Thin lizzy thing either. Sykes is a genius guitar player, but without Lynott the band did sound like a cover band. The tribute to Phil lineup on the other hand was awesome, if they can make that a world tour, that would be great. Gary Moore hasnt been in US in ages, and people would love to see just him. Don't care much about Robertson, and dont care who plays bass, theres enough good players out there. Blue Murder reunion would be awesome, if that's gonna happen. I heard an interview with Carmine Appice and he is dying for this, he is doing some crappy drum shows to kill time. So I say Good news?

............not like it could ever be Lizzy without Phillip. And even if they were to keep going, what is this really? No one plays like Brian Downey, not even the great Tommy Aldridge, and that missing element is so obvious when you listen to them now. If they don't get Gary Moore involved or Brian Robertson, then forget it, this is done. Hell, it was done way back when Phil said it was. Stop whipping a dead horse.

I understand those that say Lizzy died when Phil left us. I also understand why Scott/John/hired hands were trying to keep the Lizzy flag flying high. History has not been appreciative enough on this great seminal band! Why do I get the feeling Gorham wanted to bring out a new “Lizzy studio album” while Sykes was content to represent the Lizzy legacy via live shows? Hmmmm Some things are better left alone to memory/history. Long live Thin Lizzy! Lynott/Robertson/Gorham/Downey/Moore/White/Sykes
