MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE: 'If You Criticize Me And You're Wrong, That Ain't Cool' - July 1, 2009
MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has recorded a new audio message for TheLiveLine, a service he launched that enables musicians to connect to their audience over the phone. A couple of excerpts from his message follow below.

"I am so stoked to be back home after [completing the 'Canadian Carnage' four-date tour with SLAYER, MACHINE HEAD and SUICIDE SILENCE] — it was so much fun. And I'm so grateful for the messages you guys have been leaving us, especially about the new song we put up — 'Headcrusher', our new song from the new record, 'Endgame'. I really dig the things you guys have been saying — it's been very supportive. Even the constructive criticism... I mean, if you criticize me and you're wrong, that ain't cool, but I can chalk that up to being a democracy and giving assholes a chance to speak too. But if the constructive criticism is right... you know what?! I could take that, and I appreciate it.

"I've gotta tell you, the tour with SLAYER was really, really cool. I saw Kerry [King, SLAYER guitarist]. Kerry was out watching us last night on two separate occasions, and although I didn't get a chance to see them [SLAYER], it was really good to know that the ice is melting. I sent them over a couple of peace offerings on the way from Edmonton to Calgary and those guys had a nice trip on the way down in the bus — we flew.

"We just had a great, great time playing with these guys. The audience was over the top — so loud, it was unbelievable. My soundman, Doug Short, who lives up there in Vancouver, said that he's got something on the side of the console called a spectrum analyzer, and that measures the sound and the EQ in the house at all times. So that's we're always constantly trying to improve our sound. Sometimes we have a bad night sound-wise — usually the first night of any tour, because you're just getting your hands on the PA for the first time and you're flying by the seat of your pants because you've got the same new PA in a building, and now all of a sudden, it's full of people. Well, we haven't had a building full of people to play with these systems yet, so usually the first concert is a struggle for them. But Doug had said, while he was wrangling with all of this stuff — and I thought he did a great job — he said, 'The audience was over 106 dB.' And I said, 'That's crazy — that's almost louder than a jet airplane.' And he told me that the last night, when we were in Winnipeg, was even louder. So I'm really excited to be able to have been on this tour with SLAYER. They said it couldn't be done, and the power of heavy metal brought us back together."

MEGADETH's twelfth studio album, "Endgame", is due on September 15 through Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at the band's brand new, self-built studio in San Marcos, California — Vic's Garage — which was named after the legendary and iconic Vic Rattlehead character.

MEGADETH's brand new track entitled "Headcrusher" will be made available for free download on Tuesday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m. EDT at the Roadrunner Records web site.

As previously reported, the studio version of "Headcrusher" is available for listening by calling Dave Mustaine's number (866.597.6342) at TheLiveLine.

"Endgame" was helmed by Mustaine and acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap (EXODUS, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD). Sneap also manned the boards for 2007's "United Abominations".

lol this sounds like a bit of a jibe to me. a subtle way of saying 'oo look at us in our plane, shame the guys in slayer still have to bus it'

i love dave mustaine, he cant help himself. even when hes trying to patch things up

Dave's great but even when he's trying to say something nice or complimentary, he's still very bitter! Too bad he can't realize that he's Dave fucking Mustaine and he's already achieved legendary status and doesn't need to be a dick to get respect!

Don't buy this. Slayer are and have been so much more financially successful than Dave has ever been. Trying to make it look like he flies and Slayer takes a bus is one of the reasons why Slayer have 100X more in their bank accounts than he has.

As far as I recall, Dave was selling guitars on eBay and DAVE admitted HE WAS BROKE somewhere around 2001 or 2002. Rehab era.
So this would mean that he has only had a pair of cds since that time to make his money and that can't be very much. Gigantour has not been a big money maker. Their headline tours are not that succesful. We all know the last few have sold not that much so basically he is so insecure about Slayer and every other successful band because they have alot of money and he is trying to get whatever he can get now at the end of his career. I hope he makes some good money on this cd because to build his own studio cost alot i think. This is why he always feels threatened by Slayer and other successful bands nad has to take jabs at them. Like this jab at Slayer with the plane/bus thing and not seeing their show and that Kerry, not once, but twice watched them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Totally funny.!

And those who are saying Dave is broke are simply being the ignorant turds that you guys normally are. You guys obviously haven't seen Dave's mansion.... probably haven't seen much out of your bedroom in your mom's house.

tell them to put the track up on Friday. they do this every year. wouldn't it benefit you more to let it get played all weekend than waiting til Monday? is it because they're counting how many downloads and it the week starts/ends at a certain point?

That's dumb. You're a metal band. Offer it for d/l and send it to radio Friday! It's atleast a 3 day, if not 4 day weekend for people. People are gonna be tired Tuesday. Wouldn't it be better to have people out having a good time, drinking some beers OVER THE 4TH OF JULY going, HEY NEW MEGADETH!!!!"

And why are you going to wait over 2 months to release the album? Are they going to use the same model they used for Trivium where we get 1 track this month ("a digital single") and 1 next month ("another digital single";), then the album "leaks" in about 2 weeks (which is about 2-3 weeks before the album drops)? The 2 1/2 month model is retarded! We live in the digital age.

"He's a smart man, Mustaine; he's got freckles, but he's a smart man."

- Lemmy Kilmister, In His Own Words, 2000

Dave is doing the right thing in the process of patching the Slayer feud up by distancing his band from the other band. Dave just wants to do his job, while letting Slayer do their job without confrontation. Sounds like a reasonable means of patching things up between both parties, and it allows a window for future business to commence. It has nothing to do with any "perch" or any other higher plateau.

I could totally imagine a different tone of reaction towards Dave watching Slayer...

"Dave's a sneaky little bastard thinking he can spy on Slayer's like that. Why can't he just mind his own business?!"

Geez, some of you are clueless. If Dave was almost bankrupt (his own words people, get it?!!) when he was in rehab and hurt his hand he said and was selling his stuff and told us all in interviews that he had no money at that time, THEN WHERE DO YOU THINK HE GETS HIS MONEY FROM LATELY? He only put out 2 cds since he was out of money then and the sales of his last few cds do not at all make him a millionaire. Neither does Gigantour. The gold records a few of you talk about were BEFORE he was almost broke. So he basically has only had 2 records to make money and they did not sell very well. Slayer ARE a bigger band consistently and sell more tickets worldwise. Why do you think Dave has to be so boastlful and insecure and always says things to show that he has money?
Cause he doesn;t have what he should have and wants to have.

Secondly, I didn't see anything in this interview that could be perceived as Dave just being an asshole, it seemed like a fair interview to me. Thirdly, Slayer could very well be the more successful band, which would be a shame, because Megadeth's back catalogue I find to be a lot more varied and interesting.

Hey Dave,

If you continue to hype this new CD up like currently are and it doesn't live up to the expectations.... guess what buddy? People are going to criticize. Now if your CD doesn't live up to the hype YOU have given it... then YOU aren't cool. Fair is fair. If the CD is as you say it is, there won't be any criticism (sure some will never be happy, comes with the territory) but if it doesn't then you may not want to check out this site for a while.

Sincerely,

Megadeth fan

p.s. Personally I can't wait for this CD. Megadeth and Alice In Chains in the same month!

p.p.s. I like how Alice In Chains has not hyped their CD, they've just said "it sounds like Alice In Chains". Good enough for me! All of those studio updates were basically the guys fucking around and so very little hype. Makes the expectations that much easier.

I love how fuckers on this board all of a sudden have Ph.Ds degrees in reading the past and coming up with revisionist history. Kerry’s beef with Dave is exactly as Kerry has stated it for 25 years. Dave, though an awesome guitarist, was (and arguably still is) a pathetic human being who’s just a dick to all around him. And on the flipside, Dave’s beef with Kerry is because Kerry saw through all that shit and decided to stay with Slayer instead of trying to do both because he wasn’t even thinking about leaving Slayer, he started Slayer). Dave wanted Kerry to join full-time, but Kerry was only helping out temporarily. Kerry said, nah, you’re a dick, I’m outta here. Dave got pissy as he usually does because his daddy didn’t love him and he’s 12-year old little tyrant….still.

I swear you fuckers wish you had jobs at some tabloid so you can write out all these little fantasies and myths of how you THINK things went down. Fiction can be fun boys and girls, but it ain’t reality.

I was listening to Addicted To Chaos today after reading and contributing to Spin's Top 20 Bob Dylan songs, and the Spin list sucked, but, the subject comes up, who is a better songwriter than Bob Dylan?

Well recently, or fairly recently, Jason Becker was talking about recording a new album, though due to his condition he said it would probably sound like Bob Dylan's "Meet Me In The Morning" with that crazy, slow slide guitar. I stuck up for the Ramones because I really love Dee Dee Ramone's Rockaway Beach, "Chewin out a rhythm on my bubble gum..."

Though at the time, I was listening to Addicted To Chaos "Am I a weak man, are you feeling strong?" and I was thinking, what does it take to be a GREAT song writer. You know, like Bob Dylan is considered to be, though since Beck slaughtered Bob Dylan's "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" knowing when to leave something alone is so much of developing feel.

Now, we have Megadeth. Far mightier and greater I think, than say, that other band. I think when you compare lyrics, Dave Mustaine is I think, the far better song writer, the far better musician.

Anyway, sorry this post is so non-linear...
