EXODUS Guitarist GARY HOLT: Next Album Will 'Blow People's Minds' - July 2, 2009
The German edition of Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with guitarist Gary Holt of San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS at this year's installment of the Graspop Metal Meeting, which was held on June 26-28, 2009 on the festival grounds of the Boeretang in Dessel, Belgium.

When asked about EXODUS' plans for a new studio album, Holt said, "Hopefully we're hitting the studio around November 1 with Mr. Sneap [British producer Andy Sneap; MEGADETH, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY]. It's gonna be sick. We have four [songs] recorded [and left over] from the last session [for 2007's 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A'], and I've got, like, nine [other tracks] I'm working on, and Lee [Altus, guitar] has a bunch of stuff. But this next album is gonna blow people's minds."

Regarding the upcoming CD's musical direction, Holt said, "There's a couple of twists on this. I try not to repeat every album. I mean, we did 'Tempo Of The Damned' [2004], [which was] a little more old-school, and we did 'Shovel Headed Kill Machine' [2005], which was really brutal and fast, and then 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A' [2007], [which] was, like, longer and more epic songs. So this album's gonna have some different stuff to it. Maybe a little more dual-guitar stuff, 'cause I've been playing with Lee for quite awhile now — a little more dual-guitar harmony shred stuff. "

A new two-minute trailer for "Assorted Atrocities", the forthcoming EXODUS three-disc DVD/CD set, can be viewed below. Due late summer, the package will contain the band's July 2008 performance at Germany's Wacken Open Air festival, plus a 105-minute documentary following the band through the last five years of touring as well as about 45 minutes of bonus footage, with photo galleries and all of the group's promotional videos. The set will consist of two DVDs plus an audio CD of the Wacken performance.

EXODUS will perform its classic debut album, "Bonded By Blood", in its entirety each night of the band's Thrash Domination 2009 tour in Japan in September. Also appearing on the bill are KREATOR, TESTAMENT and HEATHEN.

British extreme metal drumming legend Nick Barker (CRADLE OF FILTH, TESTAMENT, DIMMU BORGIR, BRUJERIA, ATROCITY) filled in for EXODUS' Tom Hunting during the band's recent European tour with OVERKILL.

In a recent interview with Away-Team, EXODUS drummer Tom Hunting stated about the band's decision to re-record its seminal 1985 debut album, "Bonded By Blood", and release it under the title "Let There Be Blood", "Well, that is something that we had talked about with our former manager, who runs a record label also, and at the time we were doing that, when we agreed to do that was before we even recorded 'The Atrocity Exhibition... Exhibit A', but it was something, you know, we wanted to put those songs out there...not...not as a competition with 'Bonded By Blood', the original, but just more like a companion record and to kind of show what the band sounds like now and what they could expect to hear those songs to sound like live now because it's with the current lineup. And, I mean, we're happy with it. It came out great and we didn't spend a lot of time on it like we did on 'Atrocity' because, you know, we like to spend more time on the new material obviously, plus we should know them songs, we've been playing them for, fucking, twenty-seven years now or something crazy. I really do this, my personal...I really do this for the creation of the new music. I like when a riff is first spat out to me, to the time we record it, you know, it's like building a sandwich."

Here we go, this is the first of what will be about 250 posts from Mr Holt about how the new album is going to "blow us all away".
Well as long as it's not as derivative and uninspiring as the last one and they get back to "Shovel" territory I'll be happy.

Less interviews more studio time please!

I agree, Holt bigged up the last album as the defining word in extreme metal and it was rather un-inspiring. I don`t like it when a band gives too much hyperbole about a forthcoming album as it just gets hyped too much. Still...Exodus are legends and I`m looking forward to it...just hope it`s a bit more interesting than the last one.

I second you here.... Mr Holt always acted this way..since the "pleasures" days... this is so ridiculous...

I was just about to come and post something along the lines of, "Oh brother, here we go again...Gary Holt, Exodus' biggest cheerleader trying to hype the world up about how great the new Exodus album is going to be", but it looks like everyone beat me to it.

Seriously though, it's great that you have a new found lust for life when it comes to your old band but ease up a little. You guys aren't exactly re-inventing the wheel here. It's all just textbook Exodus, which at best has always been just below par.

Exodus certainly aren`t "below par". Bonded By Blood is one of the all time great thrash albums and Pleasures, Fabulous Disaster and Tempo are all top drawer thrash. The new singer is a bit generic sadly, they could do with a proper thrashy style singer back...but he is great live and sand those old BBB songs well on the re-recording so hopefully he`ll adapt his singing style a bit for the next one.

Below par? Do you listen to heavy music?

I know i will get slaughtered here but to me Shovel Headed is their defining moment. Everything is executed perfectly. The band sounds like a freight train. I love the classics as much as everyone else but man. that record is everything I love about Metal; it's fast, brutally heavy, vocals are killer....and the riffs? Humongous. I cranked that record for almost a year straight in my car, everyday. Excellent shit!

Below par. And yes, I do listen to heavy music(why the hell else would I be here?), and have owned a fair share of Exodus in my time(even Force of Habit...yeck!). I just think that compared to other bands in thrash, and just heavy music over all, they kind of paled in comparison. They had, and have a great thrash guitar attack and rhythm, but vocally and lyrically they were always a bit on the silly/ridiculous side to me. And even as far as the riffage goes, that's all they've got...a good agressive attack. There's not really that many memorable riffs to pick from(I said not that many, so don't go back through your Exodus catalogs and point out examples of great riff; I know they have some). In general the song writing has just been so so to me...just my opinion.

I personally like Atrocity A better than SHKM. I think the song writing is better, and Dukes has settled into his own style. Looking forward to Atrocity B

Aren't all bands claiming out loud that their next album will blow people's minds and, once it gets released, deception sets in and all expectations goes down the drain?

Be a little more conservative and let people do the praise on their own...

I think they have some metal left to offer the world. I think the last two records have been an attempt to find Exodus' sound with the departure of Rick Hunolt and Zetro. SHKM wasn't good, and I liked riot act and bedalm123 off of the last one. They're getting better, not worse with the new lineup. Regardless about the cd quality, they are unbelievable live. Tom Hunting is worth the price of admission on his own. Exodus slays!

How else are they supposed to market their material? We as fans know that some albums are better than others & so do the bands after the album is finished.

We all want our work to be successful whether its making a record or fixing a sandwich for that matter. It's called having pride in our work.

No hostility though because all that "this is our best album" shit gets old from a fan's point of view. I mean is SOLA really better than the first 2 Crue albums? Are DOWN II and III really better than DOWN I? Is the new Megadeth record better than "Rust" or "So far"? Certainly not.

The new Anthrax will not be as good as "Among The Living" "Fistful" or "Euphoria" anymore thyan the next Priest record will be as good as "British Steel" "Stained Glass" or the mighty "Painkiller".

Thes are not mattters of opinion and the bands themselves know it as well. You can't recreate magic. You can only come up with something fresh and exciting that hopefully you and the fans will like.

that last two were heavy and tight and had moments but some magic was missing for me. they were good, but not great.

and i love Gary and Exodus as my moniker implies.

so, i hope this new one is a step up.

Gary always talks up whatever is going on now. He has stated how no one can touch Rob Dukes, when in reality he is very mediocre. Souza kills Dukes on the mike. Exodus has lost a lot of their identity and memorability. I love Gary's riffs and I'll keep on listening, but he has taken too fuckin long for 'the second half' of the Atrocity installments. Exhibit A will already be two years old by the time they get back into the studio. WTF!

Gary Holt's style of playing and writing is the heart and soul of Exodus. Exodus may have changed and modernized their sound due to newer band members but Exodus will always be Exodus. I just hope that they play a longer set and headline their next tour. Seeing them open for Kreator was amazing but Exodus played like what seemed 15 minutes.

Textbook Exodus? Are you out of your damn mind? The last 3 albums (not including Let There Be Blood) are so much better than anything post-Bonded By Blood. Why do you think they never play any of that other shit from the 80's, because nobody wants to hear it! Exhibit A was just amazing, maybe not so much Garden of Bleeding lol.

Can't wait for the new album.
