JASON NEWSTED: 'I Don't Think It's Proper For SEPULTURA To Go On Without The CAVALERAS' - July 2, 2009
Former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted, who made a guest appearance on SEPULTURA's 1998 album "Against", believes that it's not "proper" for the Brazilian metal band to carry on without either of the founding Cavalera brothers (Max and Igor; on guitar/vocals and drums, respectively).

During a guest appearance this past Friday night (June 26) on the "Bone Metal Zone" show on the San Francisco radio station 107.7 FM, Newsted was asked by host Nikki Blakk about his involvement with SEPULTURA. "Yeah, I did one song on the 'Against' album with them," he replied. "I played six-string bass on it. We recorded it at The Chophouse [Newsted's home studio]. They came and stayed for a few days, and we rocked out, and that came of it."

He continued, "I've played a lot of music with Andreas [Kisser, SEPULTURA guitarist] over time — I've done real projects with him that we released to people and all that kind of stuff.

"Andreas is one of my very, very favorite people."

When asked for his opinion on Andreas' decision to continue SEPULTURA without Max and Igor, Newsted said, "No matter how much I love Andreas, I don't think it's proper for SEPULTURA to go on without the Cavaleras — one or the other; I would rather have it with both, but if we can't have that, I really don't think we should have anything."

He added, "I'm interested to hear Andreas' solo album, however, because he's very talented. He has a new record out — it's a double album. I haven't anything from it yet, but I know from recording him a lot of times that he has a lot... a very deep well. He's very talented."

Newsted performed with SEPULTURA at the Barulho Contra Fome (Noise Against Hunger) concert in August 1998, which was also the first gig of the "Against" tour. This performance included additional guest appearances by the Xavantes tribe (who'd featured on "Roots"), Mike Patton (FAITH NO MORE), Carlinhos Brown, original SEPULTURA guitarist Jairo Guedz and Coffin Joe.

This just in for someone who obviously does not pay attention: Rob does do backup vocals. He did back up vocals on Death Magnetic and does them on stage every night.

When you’re trying to talk shit about someone, try to keep it factual so you don’t come off looking like a major douche.

Yeah, because all bands should just totally implode and die because one motherfucker can’t or won’t go on.

These two situations couldn’t be more different.

In the case of Metallica, Cliff was a big part musically, but he was not one of the founders or one of the controlling heads of that band.

Sepultura was formed and headed by the Cavaleras since day one.

Apples and oranges, son.

I haven`t liked anything by Seps since at least 1994. Either way, some bands are defined by certain members and Newsted is right to say the Seps aren`t really the Seps without one or other of the Cavaleras. Same as Motorhead wouldn`t work without Lemmy, Maiden without Harris, Megadeth without Mustaine or Metallica without eitehr Ulrich or Hetfield.

It`s clear that Newsted and Kisser are friends, I`m sure Kisser knows how Newstead feels about this so I don`t see how it`s out of order.

As for Newsted leaving Metallica, I respect him for it. Staying when he wasn`t feeling it anymore and taking the paychecks would have been far worse. Besides, he got to play with Voivod for a few years, one of the greatest bands ever!

Your opinion is weak just like your name. Max rules. Roots is already a classic album, and Max is one of the originators of extreme metal. His voice represents the music - in your face aggression and violence. Hey, its not for everyone, but for you to diss Max like that, I had to respond, even though this means nothing. I just wanted to let you know that your weak and Max would piss on you.

Both brothers left the band on their own free will. One to do nu-metal, one to do rap and dance dj-ing.

The band does just fine without them. I have seen them with Derrick (usually the people that say this or slam the band now HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM LIVE WITH DERRICK), and I was a skeptic at first, but the shows I saw he fuckin' smoked.

Anyways, I don't see what the big deal is. Idiots do nothing but talk shit here all day, but when it's a musician giving his honest opinion, everyone freaks out. He's entitled to think whatever he wants. And he's really not wrong. Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos A.D absolutely destroy anything that came afterwards.

I think you're misunderstanding the context of my comment.

Newsted had a stellar career with Metallica because Metallica sallied forth under the realization that as a band, as an idea, Metallica much bigger than the sum of its parts.

Same applies to Sepultura, Napalm Death, or any other big-name acts where the original "founding" members are largely or completely absent from the current lineups.

For Newsted to say something like that about Sepultura when he himself was a replacement for an original (founding, schmounding....Cliff was on the first CD) member of Metallica is just stupid.

The Sepultura line up that we have today didn't happen when Max, Igor, and Jairo T for that matter quit the band and were replaced with Derrick, Jean, and Andreas....it was an evolution. First they traded out Jairo T for Andreas(who has spent the last 20+ years in Sepultura since) and then 10 years later with that line up Max said, "Hey, fuck you guys, I don't want to be here anymore, waa waa waa, Gloria Gloria Gloria, waa waa waa I quit"!

Then they regrouped and even took a year or so of jamming together and writing new material with just the 3, even toying with the idea of Andreas taking over lead vocals. When it became clear that it wasn't an option for Andreas to do both lead vocals and essentially handle all the guitar duties, they went on the search for a new singer...enter Derrick. And now, 10 more years passes with that line up...

And NOW, after 25 years of the bands existence Igor, the drummer leaves the band...and this is the time that people want to start griping about how "this isn't the true Sepultura" and blah blah blah. This is it...Sepultura, like it or not. And I for one think they have every right to carry on without Max and Igor...why? Because this didn't happen overnight. It happened over the course of many years! And, both Max and Igor left on their own accord.

It's a band, not a solo project...these things happen, get over it.

Likewise, Sepultura was really not worth your attention (unless you were part of South American underground scene) until Andreas joined and started to chip in his two cents. Max and Igor both chose to leave Sepultura. Why should the others give up on something they have been a part of creating because others choose to leave? Max was a big loss as he was the voice but Igor leaving is the deciding factor in disbanding Sepultura? Jason is entitled to his opinion but fortunately his opinion doesnt mean squat. I mean, if Igor stayed and Andreas, the other prolific member of Sepultura besides Max left the band and they went and got Joe Shmo, then they'd have a problem...THAT wouldn't make alot of sense. a band member's vital role in the band should depend on seniority, and how much input they have to the songwriting (music & lyrics). a band member's importance should be based on these things. so, 2 founding members are no longer in the band. should this mean that the rest of the guys should have to hang it up? I don't think so.

for example... let's say in a few years that Paulo decides to leave the band. they should still deserve to continue as Sepultura with another bassist.

And Igor of today is nowhere near the level of the Igor of the Beneath the Remains/Arise era, so I don't really care that he quit.

Then when we hear the triumphant reunion of the Calaveras, and it pretty much sucks.... I am once again reminded why I don't care that they left.

If we are going to talk about Sepultura "evolving" to its current line-up then the same thing must be said about the Current GnR line-up that everybody wants to bash for not being "the real GnR". As I recall, there was a lot of evolving going on in that line up over the years, both before and after the "classic line up". Nobody thinks they should still be called "Guns N Roses"....and I think thats what Jason is saying about Sepultura.
