SATYRICON: 'Lords Of Chaos' Book Is Inaccurate Story That 'Exploits' History Of Black Metal - July 3, 2009
Vocalist Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven and drummer Kjetil-Vidar "Frost" Haraldstad of the Norwegian black metal band SATYRICON have expressed their disgust over the reports that the "Lords Of Chaos" book is being turned into a movie.

Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind's book claims to depict "true events" and revolves around the black metal sub-culture that spawned a wave of murders and church arsons across Norway in the early 1990s.

Jackson Rathbone, the teen heartthrob from "Twilight", has reportedly agreed to play Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) — the former BURZUM mastermind who served a lengthy Norwegian prison term for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) and setting fire to three churches — in the "Lords Of Chaos" movie.

Making his English-language debut with "Lords Of Chaos" will be hot Japanese director Sion Sono.

Stuart Pollok of Los Angeles-based Saltire Entertainment, Ko Mori of Eleven Arts and Oh Jungwan of Korea's Bom Productions are producing the film, which starts shooting in Norway in mid-September.

Speaking to Pål Nordseth of Norway's Dagbladet.no, Satyr said, "Now that the focus on black metal finally has shifted towards the actual music, this gossip journalism in the shape of a book is made into a movie. Since 'Lords of Chaos' is an incredibly bad book, I can only assume the movie will be bad as well."

He continued, "It is sad that such an inaccurate story, written by someone who doesn't understand black metal, has become a book of reference. And it is sad that someone is willing to go that far to exploit the history of black metal."

Frost added: "This is a parasitic phenomenon."

Both musicians stressed that they do not want to give any extra publicity to the movie. They also flat-out declined to comment on Varg Vikernes' recent release from prison.

Three years ago, plans had been underway to make the "Lords Of Chaos" book into a film. However, the producers lacked funding at the time.

Now, however, with funding underway, producer Pollok was in Cannes in May to promote the project.

Regarding hsi decision to make the film, Pollok told Dagbladet.no, "It is a fascinating topic, a great visual world to depict, and a fun portrayal of Norway. Black metal is possibly the largest cultural export of Norway in the past twenty years."

In his manuscript to Norway's Hans Fjellestad, Pollok revealed that the film will be based on actual events.

It will be a story of youth and youthful energy, said Pollok, but he emphasised that the film will fall under the teen film category, and that it will be a psychological horror film.

The events that came to pass are interesting and fascinating, said Pollok.

Pollok confirmed to Dagbladet.no that he will also be casting Norwegian actors.

Svein Andresen of Film Camp, which is responsible for the Norwegian recording locations and production, stated, "What happened has been widely known to the public for a long time, and is now known worldwide. This was a gang that declared war on society. Actually, it is not surprising that Norwegian filmmakers have picked up on this piece of history."

In a 2004 statement posted on the Burzum.org web site, Vikernes slammed the "Lord Of Chaos" book as "a pool of mud," insisting that "the vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!" He went on to say, "This book serves only one single purpose and that is to create a myth around my name and to mystify me. If that was their objective they have indeed succeeded with their work. Well, the book seems to have served one other purpose too. The authors have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies. What could have been a righteous revolt has been made into some pathetic, embarrassing, brain-dead, impotent and traditional poser-culture best exemplified by bands like DIMMU BORGIR — and indeed VENOM!"

The director actually said " a fun portrayal of Norway" i don't think many who were effected by that would think it was fun, but whatever.

I read this book and thought it was pretty enjoyable - of course I can't say what was true and what wasn't but I still think its an interesting book if you are curious about the genre and are a metal fan - cheers

This is bullshit. Most of these guys are adults now and have families and live by the law of Norway and they are going to have their past dragged up and exploited. Bullshit. This is why juvenile records are sealed assholes.

...with at least some degree of literacy and ability for critical reading will realize that "Lords of chaos" is a sensationalistic piece of tabloid writing. The attempts to analyze the events and put them in a sociological context fail miserably, and the thing is poorly written with a lot of factual mistakes, misqoutations and spelling/grammatical errors.

It's an entertaining read, but what's bothering me is that a whole generation of newcomers use it as a reference to black metal, fueling a mythology that never existed. Of course, it can be argued that a lot of the bands at the time, especially Mayhem, were no strangers to revising history and making things seem different than originally intented, but still...

End of rant.

I'm all for some movie about my prefer music style, but as any thing, if it is done wrong, it should be hated.

I think that the Satyricon's guys were trying to say, or anyway what I would like them to say, is that Black Metal doesn't get down to some guys who killed or suicide themselves and burn church. Fuck, Varg music is unbearable, and this guy was just a stupid kid, as there are many stupid kids doing stupid things in the States. Oh, by the way, I hope the movie (and book) mentioned that there are a bunch of churches in Norway that are made of wood, this is why they burn so easily (for those in America who was wondering how stone made church could burn).

This pisses me off.

For one, the movie shouldn't be made, especially if actors who know nothing about black metal and what it stands for are going to be playing in it. Two, black metal wasn't created to become a movie or anything else huge in entertainment; it started out as an underground music concept and should STAY underground. Black metal fans and bands have done a good job expressing their views through their music by not getting involved with the business aspect of it which is killing the art itself.

I hope Satyricon and many other Norwegian black metal bands protest against this. I personally think Varg could care less about the topic...

It was already a book that created tons of controversy, so why should they keep inflating the matter further?

I'm pretty sure Varg is a changed man, and changed for the better. I feel for both Varg and Satyricon guys.

Fuck that actor, the book's authors, all these people that won't even listen to this kind of music. I might not understand what happend any better but at least I respect these musicians... Hellhammer, Fenriz, Satyr, Varg, Samoth, all those survivors.

The book is indeed a pile of rubbish, basing most of its stories on exceprts of interviews and sensationalistic remarks. The movie that will pop-out of it will not make it any better, I am sure. The only thing missing to smear Black Metal for good was such a movie and it will poison the masses soon. Hopefuly the movie will be a commercial disaster and that the kids won't stick to the core ideas of Black Metal... unless they all swallow the crap and start burning their local churches...

Now that would be mass entertainment!

we all know how influential teenagers can be .
all this movie will accomplish is drawing attention to something that's best left forgotten.
Those old days specifically the murders are what killed off the main momentum of musically driven black metal.
The last thing we need are a bunch of new wanna be run of the mill or even shit musicians running around knifing guys because of this movie.

"teen heartthrobs from vampyric soap operas meddle with the false satanic pretentiousness of grin Norwegian Black Metal, as performed by various closet jockeys, to depict a highly dramatized piece of #%#% ! What interest could a film like that have unless it is done in a documentary style and how "fun" could it indeed be ?"

In all my years of reading this site, that is the single greatest thing ever written on it.

Never read it for that reason. The whole church burning shit, killing, etc. is pop trash. As Satyr says it is with the past several years that it is the music the is the focus and not the drama. Although burning a church is pretty feeble anyways (imo). Things are pretty historic looking and artistically constructed. Granted I could give two shits for Christianity the whole thing reeks of sore losers to do something now. Hell, a lot of use later generations had to deal with the Christ game via the crusades so nothing unique about Norway's condition. They just were able to link it to some killer music so hails for that. I dont think religion has to be actively sought to destroy, it seems it is doing a fine job doing it on it's own. As long as your government gives you freedom (Fuck yea USA \m/ and Happy 4th) then I can't see pissing and moaning about much. Perhaps Norway forces people to make 1st communion? :)

but its not the black metal gospel. the whole facist topics in the latter half of the book only help in portraying what norway was like (in the writers mind, at least) in the time people like satyr were concieved and raised. case in point--to understand the late 60's movement in the states, you have to understand the ultra conservitism of the 50's and how we got there.

the movie will only fuel the desire to hear the music and learn the truth. 2nd case in point--take the doors movie. lots of lies and rubbish, but ollie's take on jimbo exposed a new generation to the music of the doors.

what i'd like to see is someone like satyr/ishan/hellhammer write
a book (or a collabrative effort) on the scene.

first off excellent comment 67jeb. I feel a sickening cold feeling in the pit of my stomach if Lords of Chaos does infact turn into a movie with that fucking pretty boy tween hearthrob from twilight. Black Metal is becoming commerical enough as it is now were gonna have 14 year old girls running around the mall in corpse paint with twilight shirts on. Oh the humanity.

It is the closest glimpse film-wise of Varg and other musicians in Norway.

I don't think "Lords Of Chaos" should be made. Even if the "Based on a true story" tag is shoved in front of people's eyeballs.

Lords of Chaos is fiction. It's as fiction as most of the statements made by early 90's norwegian black metal bands and their hangarounds. Strange that they wanted to create a myth back then, but now that they have all grown up...they don't want the myth anymore? Oh...the myth didn't turn out exactly as they wanted it to. Well, Lords of Chaos is indeed a fun read, and i am sure the movie will be fun to watch, as long as you bear in mind that it is fiction all the way.
