KISS Drummer On New Album: 'No Ballads, No Slow Songs, No Filler'

KISS drummer Eric Singer has issued the following update via the band's official web site: "You wanted the best? "Well, the wait is almost over... "I have been hearing KISS fans say for a longtime that 'All's we want is NEW KISS music'... Well, sometimes wishes do come true! "Last December, Paul [ Stanley, guitar/vocals] called me up saying he wanted to make a new KISS record. He seemed very keen and was very specific about the approach to our latest endeavors. He basically said he wanted us to make a KISS record and music in the purest sense. Meaning no outside writers, the BAND plays on everything, and we use vintage equipment. "Guess what? The end result is everything I could have hoped for. "I have to say this has been the most fun and pleasure making a record I have ever been involved in. The chemistry and overall vibe really made for such a great atmosphere and the playing, sounds and songs just really capture what KISS is all about. Classic rock & roll. "As we were working up song ideas, everyone was very in tune and conscious of our goals at all times. Gene [ Simmons, bass/vocals] and Paul would retrace their steps from the past and focused on paying tribute to their roots of the early styles of classic KISS by paying close attention to the way they sang and the sounds of the instruments. "The camaraderie between everyone and especially Gene and Paul really made it easy for all to bring the best out of each other. " Paul took the reigns and headed up the project like the leader that he has been for over 35 years but, this time with a renewed, inspired and very patient style (he is a great dad after all). He really knew what he wanted from each of us individually and collectively. "We did the 11 new songs in small batches by getting into a rehearsal studio first to work up ideas. We then would move to the recording studio. The recordings would entail all of us playing 'live' together in the room. As we captured each performance, we would then add extra guitar parts and usually put a guide vocal on the track so we could live with it for a few days and make sure the tempos and vibe was right. "By the way, we used NO click tracks on this record I am proud to say. We really went for capturing the live feel and essence of each song. And, Paul, Gene, Tommy [ Thayer, guitar] and myself are the only musicians playing these songs. A true band effort and performance! "As for the songs? Well, no ballads, no slow songs, no filler... The band really has come full circle. Just pure straight-ahead rock and roll that has all the elements that made you love KISS from day one. Everyone sings lead on a song ( Tommy and myself) and even trade off vocal lines and parts throughout the record. "Believe me, the wait IS over and well worth it! "I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we did making it...

i love how the members of ki$$ keep emphasizing that the members of the band actually wrote and play on the whole album - guess what ki$$ - that's what rock 'n' roll bands are suppose to do! it isn't anything special and the fact that you have to mention it shows how much you suck!
and how many of the songs on this album will end up being played live in the coming months/years? my wager is none. know why? because no one who goes to see ki$$ today gives a shit! the ki$$ fans want the predictable, same old live show they've been doing since 1978! christ, why do you think thayer and singer are dressing up like ace and peter - because the ki$$ fans wants to see the same old ki$$!

How does KISS rip off the fans? No one has a gun to anyone's head telling them to buy this or that....it's called supply and demand. If there were no demand for KISS merch they wouldn't sell it. The quality of the stuff is always top notch (look at the KISSOLOGY series...awesome) and they always put on a damn good show for the price of a ticket....so what's the problem?

These headlines always seem like a cattle-call for a bunch of ass wipes to come in and yell about how much of a has been band they are. If you don't like the band and only want to bitch and complaine --- FUCK OFF.
This is going to be a great album and I CAN NOT WAIT. Paul
Stanley is the heart of this band and always has been. If he's got the reigns I've got no worries. It will rule. And when it does kick mucho ass.....not a fucking one of you BLOW-HARDS will come back and say...."Uh oh....I was wrong. That cd is awesome."
I know I just put a target on my back. But fuck off. I'm right. And when you fuckers are wrong....you won't be back. I've saw it a million times.

I didn't see where anyone wrote that KI$$ was ripping off their fans. But I think they deceive their fans - for example, by hyping an album that, by their track record, will likely stiff (they did the same thing with Psycho Circus and it sucked), and dressing up Thayer and Singer like former members.
KI$$ also hypes their own demand - the present concert tour of casinos and fairs in Canada is only selling well in a few cities. Yes, they did a big tour in South America, but that market is starved for rock acts and I'm pretty sure that any rock and roll band with a big show would do well there. That's why KI$$ went there in the first place. KI$$ is all about hype.
I agree that KISSOLOGY was a terrific idea, and long overdue! The series was well done, but again the majority of it was focused on the Gene/Paul/Ace/Peter era and reunion because that's what the KI$$ fans want!
Here's the problem - as a fan of KISS, I'm tired of being fed the same product over and over and over. You're right, it's my choice whether to buy it or not, and I for one am not buying. Because all KI$$ has to offer today is a retro vibe that was tired many years ago!

i remember all the blow-hard ki$$ sheep harping on and on before psycho circus came out - "oh, this is going to silence the critics once and for all", "this will be the best album since 'destroyer'" - and now, all the same fuckheads won't even talk about psycho circus.
the same thing will happen with this album - it will tank, the ki$$ sheep will retreat until $tanley and $immon$ hype them up so they can stand behind some other piece of shit that will also tank. it goes on and on and has been since the 70's. so keep pumping it up ki$$ sheep so we can all laugh our asses off at you again in six months when the new album is collecting dust in the bargain bins and used cd shops!

good for you and "your opinion" I'm a KISS fan, don't speak for me. Peter and Ace ARE NOT IN KISS ANYMORE. This is KISS Mach 5. as for all the bashers....let us be....we want and look forward to this album...if you don't like it or the band...fine...go listen to the Jonas Brothers or Hoobastank or whatever else floats your f-n boat. Gawd I've never read such a bunch of negative bunch of shit from so many wanna be critics.

and it's about fucking time. I'm sick of all the crappy Nickelback/Staind/Seether/Halestorm garbage that's flooded radio for the past eight years or so. Dammit, can't they write just one good song? No. But KISS can. KISS is responsible for some of the greatest pure rock'n'roll music ever recorded, and I am happy they are trying to recapture the magic. Who cares if they make a ton of money selling caskets and toilet mint with their likenesses on them, if you looked that fucking cool you would too! Quit bashing them if you don't like them and let those of us who appreciate who KISS is enjoy them for what may be the last time. I will be there to buy the new cd, and I will see them live, and no punk here will stop me from enjoying myself. Peace.

I don't know why there is so much animosity towards these two guys. They are both superior musicians & people. What groups are there that have all original members left? If you only listen to, buy new product from or go to concerts with gropus with all original members I guess you don't get out very often.

I've been a KISS fan for 30 years...Although alot less as of late..
I agree with most comments here except for 3..
1. If you think KISS fans want to see Eric dressed as Catman and Thayer dressed as Space Ace you are fucking crazy! This is as lame as it gets. These guys should have their own makeup like Eric Carr did.
2. If you think we wanna see the same setlist over and over your crazy too. Let alone see the same fucking costumes..I know Eric can hold his own singing but KISS fans dont really give a fuck about Eric or Tommy singing and watering down a record..There's a reason these guys dont sing in the first place..Because it sucks...KISS wanted from the beginning for all 4 members to sing, i.e. the fucking Beatles..KISS are not the goddamn Beatles last time I checked..And yes, they're always trying to re-create the past (Psycho Circus anyone!) Doesn't work....Personally one of their best albums was the Carnival album that was the last without makeup because of its current sounding music.
3. I couldn't disagree more with a recent post as to the KISSOLOGY series..Several parts with Ace and Peter have been edited out (Tom Snyder interview for starters) and being that KISS claim to own every form of video in their "Vault". The collection pretty much is a dissapointment..You can find better/rarer shit online and in the form of bootlegs...

Damn! "Guitar God"( if in fact you are one.)...relaaaax! I do agree with you on the Carnival of Souls album. Look Paul and Gene OWN the "likeness's of Cat and Space Ace.....Peter and Ace signed that shit away..they didn't have to but they did. I've been fan for the same amount of time as you, It doesn't matter to me who the fuck wears the "Cat" or the Space Ace mask". KISS is really Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons,(mostly Paul in my opinion) They tried to get Ace and Pete back....IT DIDN'T WORK. Yeah blame Paul and Gene..for whatever (you and everybody has a theory) the fact is Tommy and Eric are IN KISS, have been for longer then the original 2, and if you think about it this way, its a pretty good tribute to the guys who first wore that shit. The next KISS album is gonna be a KISS album....just like the new WHITESNAKE is a new WHITESNAKE album...do you know who's in Whitesnake now?? other then Dave Coverdale??? cuz it's certainly NOT the "original" Snake! and theres a TON of other bands that are doing the same damn thing. Kiss does not produce good music, what they do is put on an exciting show. They should just forget about albums, and just do what they do best: put on face paint and blast pyro.

Eric Singer is a CLASS ACT and a great drummer. He's played with the best in the world. Also a great guy.
I don't condone wearing Peter's makeup but Gene is the boss and this is his job. We all do things every day at work we don't wanna do because they're the ones who PAY US.

if it's true that the new album features only Paul, Gene, Tommy, & Eric. Although that's how it should always be, we all know that it's not been that way for a loooooong time.
Singer's interview makes me very eager to hear the new disc. And knowing that Tommy & Eric are gonna sing will make it kinda interesting. I'll buy it day one.

Listen the reason why Eric stressed that, only the 4 of them played on the album was simple, because in the late 70's and very early 80's they to hire studio musicians to come in and play the parts of Ace and Peter cuz they just weren't up to snuff. It's bullshit that back in the day they sold us albums as kiss but it was....how do you haters put it......a bunch of scabs playing on the records. But they still put all of there faces on the albums and made you believe it was kiss, so right then and there made me believe that kiss was a product bigger than the individuals in it. Reading the book in the box set opened my eyes quite a bit to the world of kiss. In reality the bottom line is this.....Tommy and Eric can play rings around Ace and Peter, just check out the live stuff from the psycho circus tour compared to anything lately, they just played slowed and sloppy and peter just simply couldn't play. Now Ace might be able to still do it, but Tommy is carrying on the spirit of Kiss. I'm fucking ecstatic over the new album. Bring it on Kiss. I'm fucking with you, and NO they don't have to sell me a line to buy it, cuz i'm a fucking fan for life.

carnival sucked, cause it didn't sound much like kiss.
Psycho Circus ... on the other hand sounded like a collection of solo tracks with a bunch of very strong numbers..... in there... i didn't mind it at all, and thought it was rather good actually !!!

if KISS deliver 4-5 MEGA ANTHEMS this will sell decently... if it's a supermarket deal as well, they will stock this in great numbers.... pre-purchasing copies....

The awnser is simple.. Go to Florida and hire a private detective. Find the Brothers Hoffman, Eric and Brian of Deicide. Make them members of KISS. The two greatest metal guitarists of all time. That would be an awesome KISS!!

First of all Eric Singer is the best drummer Kiss ever had so what gives with all the crying about makeup. Most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Not liking a band because of who is or isn't wearing makeup.
Eric Singer played on Revenge and Carnival of Souls in replacement of Eric Carr (RIP). I think that legitimizes him as an important member of the band. Those were both good albums. Eric Singer was then replaced by Peter Criss who is not a good drummer. So Eric Singer got kicked out because of Peter Criss and then even after Peter Criss got kicked out because of Peter Criss, Eric was gratious enough to come back and bang some skins. Give the guy a break. Besides, he does a pretty fucking good job at Black Diamond.
I've said this before, if this wasn't a band that had ever worn makeup... NOBODY would give a fuck that Ace and Peter were gone. NOBODY. They both stopped contributing anything worthwhile more than 30 years ago. Psycho Circus was weak assed for the most part and having Ace and Peter back did nothing to prevent that.
When Eric Singer plays and you are in the audience, it looks like you're watching Peter Criss and he just got really good all of a sudden.
I'll base my opinion of this album on its merits, not who isn't playing on it.

the Kissology set would be better if Paul didn't go back and over-dub his vocals on the show from Australia ( vol. 2)
And funny how on the commentary section there's no sign of Ace or Peter.
And no one outside of the serious fanbase knows that Tommy and Eric are not Ace or Peter...so yeah I consider that a rip-off.

If you saw one Kiss show you've seen them all. I saw them back in the 70s with Priest as the opener then saw them again on the reunion tour. I hope they do something new because it is always the same show. Make-up, pyro, breathing fire and spitting blood was pretty entertaining back in 1976 but now it is nothing shocking. They should update their live act and set list and give the fans something new to go see. The 3D shit was lame and barely worked so don't go there.
Also, Gene hardly played on any of the albums since Hotter Than Hell. He barely played on Destroyer. I know he plays it live but he definitely didn't play or write the bass line on Detroit Rock City. Paul has been the only consistent member of Kiss. Gene is the one they should replace. At least in the studio and songwriting process.

Gene and Paul's band. Ace and Peter were there when classics were recorded. Great musicians. They had demons that caused them to sabotage themselves several times. (Ace seems to have his at bay at this time.) Gene and Paul have made great music with other musicians. My issue is with those that consider Tommy Thayer to be a great guitarist. Why? Eric C, Eric S, Bruce K and Vinnie V ALL contributed NEW material to the band. Tommy has copied Ace, maybe a little Bruce, and ghosted on a CD or two. HOWEVER, hopefully, with Paul's direction, he shall do a passable job on the new CD. (Based on BnB, I am not sure. Saw them a few times and was not impressed.) We shall see. I hope for the best.
