MEGADETH: New Song 'Headcrusher' Available For Free Download
- July 7, 2009
|
|
MEGADETH's brand new track entitled "Headcrusher" is available for free download at the Roadrunner Records web site (free e-mail sign-up required). It can also be streamed below. "Headcrusher" comes off MEGADETH's twelfth studio album, "Endgame", which is due on September 15 through Roadrunner Records. The CD was recorded at the band's brand new, self-built studio in San Marcos, California — Vic's Garage — which was named after the legendary and iconic Vic Rattlehead character. "Endgame" track listing: 01. Dialectic Chaos02. This Day We Fight!03. 44 Minutes04. 1,320'05. Bite The Hand That Feeds06. Bodies Left Behind07. Endgame08. The Hardest Part Of Letting Go... Sealed With A Kiss09. Headcrusher10. How the Story Ends11. Nothing Left To Lose"Endgame" was helmed by Mustaine and acclaimed British producer Andy Sneap ( EXODUS, NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD). Sneap also manned the boards for 2007's "United Abominations". According to a press release, "Endgame" "boasts the technicality, ferocity and snarl that's synonymous with MEGADETH and Mustaine. It's a violent masterwork that represents Mustaine's best work in nearly two decades. In a musical world dominated by bands that make generic, blanket statements, 'Endgame' finds Mustaine, once again, making informed and substantial lyrical declarations about the state of the world we live in." Commented Mustaine: "Thematically, I've never been known to be a silent bystander in a world that needs our participation. As more is revealed about our former President's legacy, a little-known yet staggeringly frightening document which was signed into law, named 'Endgame', has been uncovered. The album 'Endgame' is the most energetic music offering I have penned in over a decade and is far more believable than knowing someone signed 'Endgame' — the document — into law. The album is also the perfect 'ass-kicking' music to listen to once you are done reading the aforementioned document!" He added, "This new album is my proudest moment since the famous (or infamous) 'Rust in Peace' album. With this album, I am also very excited to be introducing my new lead guitarist, Chris Broderick, to the world. I have always felt lucky to have had top shredders in that position, but after touring with Chris in support of my last album, I couldn't wait to get into the studio and see what he could do."

Yes, this song is great old school Megadeth! As for the lyrics they fit the song for what it is, I am not concerned. The rest of the album will have better lyrics I am sure.
I really think this is going to blow their last 2 albums out of the water! I know the last teasers were 'Sleepwalker' and 'Kick the Chair' two of the better tracks from the last albums but I really think the rest of the album is going to be even better than 'Headcrusher'. Especially considering it's the 9th track on the album!
Can't Wait for Endgame!!!

Well, it's not the greatest Megadeth song by any stretch but, it's still a good solid effort. Sounds a bit like a RIP song but needs about 4 more riffs, two more solos and another minute. I hope for some epic songs on the album and some more clean instrumental intro's like off PSBWB. Lyrics were ok - I think DM is just having some fun these days. Sort of reminded me of the tongue in cheek gore of Black Friday.
I was impressed by the solo at the end though - not so much that it was an amazing solo - but, it's clearly a Broderick solo, and he hasn't gone for a million notes per second, as I've seen him do for Jag Panzer and Nevermore - it's a bit like a Friedman solo in parts and yet he still brings his technical mastery to the table.
I'm quietly impressed and very expectant.
What a great day. Heard the new AIC tune and now this... awesome.

I guess it must be hard to make any kind of metal that is fresh these days. If a band returns to their roots they are uninspired, but if they try something different they are criticized for being in the vein of numetal.
I guess the key to remaining relevant is not to reinvent the wheel just to write a collection of solid well written songs which improve over the last effort. In this case I think Mustaine blew his bullets when Marty left.
I actually can't wait to hear the new slayer album if kerry king isn't writting everything.

im a pretty huge megadeth fan... own every album. All you people saying this is old school rust in peace and peace sells...come on. This is anything but. Personally i didnt think this song had ANY flow what so ever. The chorus riff is BORING!!! Last time i checked, RIP songs had 35 solos in each song. lol. whatever you wanna call that little thing at the end, was pretty weak. Have any of you listened to THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED...now theres a good fucking metal album for todays day and age. Kick the chair is still on my top fav songs. and now it seems like everything mustaine writes is from tapes he made during those sessions. I know people are excited, i was too.

As a Deth Fan - AND I love Cryptic Writings and The System Has Failed just like the old school stuff - I feel let down.
Uninspired, I expected sth catchy with insane riffing, weird arrangements and technical superiority. What we get is a Kick the Chair/Sleepwalker rip-off - a bit heavier than the last one, but still no Mary Jane or Polaris.

I really think if the first half of the song was as good as the second half they would have a home run. From like 2 minutes on it's really fucking crushing. Outside of that it sounds like a leftover from UA. Since 1992 all I expected are three really great songs off a Megadeth album, and the rest are at least highly listenable (outside of Risk IMO). That being said, writing one good song in an entire career is an accomplishment. At his age, I applaud the effort.

agree with you on the Metallica thing, they wrote few good albums and topped it with Master of Puppets, the black albums was a sellout, but Hetfields voice is the most commercial voice of all the trash singers so they are more likely to be liked by people who just listen to the hits or the "normal" people. and they havent done anything good in almost 20 years. and saying this sounds bad???? the sound on most Megadeth albums are very good and many times better then on any Metallica album, they could even get Death Magnetic to sound good, but still it was an ok album, but this Megadeth song is probably better then any song on Death Magnetic.

Like someone else said, mediocre song. You can't just thrash the hell out of the E string and blast through the song with double kicks and instantly have a great metal song.
And Dave's vocals are complete garbage. Maybe if he sang with a little feeling and power like he did back in the day it would be better.
I think someone posted above something along the lines of "Fuck you. Headcrusher is a great song. If you don't like it, I'd like to see you write something better. Nya". Haha. Whatever. I don't have to have the capability to design a better car to say that Chevy Malibu's are shit. I don't have to be a construction engineer to know that the big bridge that collapsed here in Minneapolis was poorly built. But I do know that if more time and effort and creativity/brainpower were put into those respective products, they would've been a lot better.
The song is average and uninspired. But my hopes are still high because it's a later track on the record and if they follow their normal format, the best stuff will be in the first half. Well, besides Psychotron, obviously. There's a phenomenal gem found on the second half of it's respective album.

This is NOT a great song to release as a first single. Sleepwalker was a very cool song with a great riff, this is boring and done to death. The first few songs of UA were good, but the rest was uninspired filler nonense. The System Has Failed was solid through and through. I surely hope the rest of the new album is more inspired, melodic and heavy where it needs to be. Im not asking for a RIP II, just for a solid album like TSHF.

One of the worst things I have heard this year so far. Where is the definition of the song? Fast doesn't mean better, or oh look I can put few more notes over there doesn't mean that you wrote truly unique song. Where is the feel? Damn, rap and pop music are putting out better songs nowadays compared to this "song". I mean so many years of experience in songwriting - and the result is this???

Gosho, the song may not be the best thing Megadeth has put out, but your comment is so absolutely retarded, I just don't even know what to say to it. If you truly think this is the worst song you've so far this year, and you think pop and rap songs are better, than I can truly say to you, go listen to your Britney Spears, and Linkin Park.
Zakkimal, I agree with you on UA to an extent, as there were lots of filler, but some decent tracks sprinkled throughout the album ("Black Ice" turned out to be one of my favs on the album). But disagree with you TSHF. I think the first half was great, but the second in my opinion, fits the description you gave for UA, haha.

Agreed with most that this is generic and bland by Megadeth's standards but still good nonetheless. 3/5. Sounds like Mustaine was just having "fun" on this one. 1:35 to 2 min... sounded weird to me...didn't fit with the song imo. Nice solo work. IF another track is similar to this one or worse...then it doesn't live up to RIP/Countdown...as Mustaine has been promising. BUT, we'll see come Sept. 15th.

I find that incredibly hard to believe, even if you are let down by the song itself. I cannot even imagine "Birthday Sex" being a better song than this. And that's not even because it's a rap song, but the fact that it's a TERRIBLE song. I've heard better music from Jay-Z that shits over that song.

Are some of their new albums up on the cutting raw edge like their earlier stuff? No, because these are different times and those were the days when that awesome stuff was coming out. What bands like Megadeth and other older metal gods offer is a dependability to deliver the goods in a style that they themselves have made, brought into existence. If you want something drastically different, cutting edge go listen to something else, someone else who is trying to do something else that is different/cutting edge for today. I think you'll be hard pressed to find stuff though, but that is just my opinion. If you want something like Megadeth but more like todays stuff, then try Kalmah, or one of those bands. They are awesome at what they do. But they obviously were born out of bands like Megadeth. I listen to all sorts of Metal, but I prefer the roots, the old gods. There is no surpassing them. So, if Megadeth or whoever, comes out with yet another album/song that sounds similar to what they have always done, FANTASTIC! I want dependability. I like innovation in my favorite long running bands but only when its subtle. And that is what the old gods provide. Its like if a movie is going to have a sequel, or several sequals. We want the sequel to be good, to add something, be a next new chapter, but not be so radically different that it doesn't really fit the series. Bands put out albums have to do this constantly! You complainers try doing that for 10 or 20 consecutive albums or whatever! I'll stick with the old gods. When/if new gods come along that are fucking worthy enough (Opeth, Arch Enemy), then I listen, but it's rare for me to find many new gods. Long live Iron Maiden, Dio, Sabbath, Megadeth, etc!!

I don't see why there is so much complaining...this is a vintage Megadeth song. Sure it's a little short, but look at Rust and Piece...the song "Take No Prisoners" was only 3:27, and "Poisen Was the Cure" was only 2:57; but they were still killer tracks nonetheless! Not to mention all the songs from Slayers "Reign In blood" that are all under 3 minutes!
The point is, an album has to have a variety of song lengths and structures...I'm sure there will be some longer ones on the album itself; they probably picked the shortest one on purpose just to give people a teaser and not reveal too much.
And Broderick's little solo at the end is awesome! He sounds a lot like Jeff Loomis to me (imagine the shredfest that would've occured had he stayed in Nevermore? Wow!), but maybe a tad more melodic.

Those of you that say this sounds like Sleepwalker need to get your ears cleaned out. This is the closest they have come to sounding like their old days than they ever have. The guitar tone is far better, the riffs heavier and thrashier.

I don't really see any similarity to this new song and "Sleepwalker." I mean, at all, really. And I never really cared for "Sleepwalker" or much of UA, unfortunately. I don't think I've even picked the album up much after it came out. I've listened to their back catalogue numerous times since then, however.

I hate these new Megadeth songs...Nothing memorable about this song. United Abominations stunk so will this. System had great memorable songs. And was the best since Countdown, These last 2 are bleh.

something new? Megadeth was new 20+ years ago. and they keep on being MEgadeth but when they changed a little with Risk for example the real fans didnt like it. but this song is Megadeth, if i wanna buy MEgadeth album i want Megadeth!! and if i want Iron Maiden or something else i just buy there albums. i want MEgadeth when i buy Megadeth. Megadeth are still Megadeth and they are like noone else, thats also why AC/DC and Maiden also get away with it. they are always themself and very good at that

Metallica doesnt play thrash anymore, weak chord proggressions, megadeth kills them with their albums, any albums,
also,,fucktheworld420,,, you keep mentioning the album Cryting Writings from Megadeth,,I love Megadeth,,but that album is probably one of their weakest,,but they still rock,,

There's a reason why The Four Horsemen is much better known than The Mechanix, because of ridiculous, childish lyrics such as this. Not a single memorable hook in the entire thing. You can't even tell where the verse ends and the chorus begins. Looks like this will be just as forgettable as UA.

Dave needs to start getting smashed again. I never thought I'd see the day when Mustaine would run out of things to write about but it seems to me that that's what's happened.
What the hell is this song about? A device used for crushing heads? What happened to the days when Dave's lyrics were interesting? The vocals aren't much chop either, it sounds like he's making it all up as he goes. The same issue pretty much ruined UA - Full of great tunes with shithouse lyrics and woeful vocals.
Come on Dave, you can do better.

WTF do you want from Mustaine? This certainly is incomparable to Risk and TWNAH. It clearly displays Mustaines technical and thrashing riffage. I think that with TSHF and UA he/the band has progressed tremendously, in the right direction. So what if he's a born again or a coffee jin jitsu black belt megalmaniac... it's Dave Mustaine offering up some modern day Megadeth that most fans seem to dig too. (It is too bad as to how he phrased his Canadian Carnage experience with Slayer). Anyways, even through my laptops speakers, this song has me jonesin for the arrival of Endgame. I say all the Clash of the Titans bands need to regroup and give fans another package, only this time throw Metallica and Machine Head into the mix and leave out AiC. Pantera would have fit nicely too, f#$kin Gale, I hope he's trapped in purgatory. Sorry, my imagination got the best of me. Back to topic, bring on Endgame. \m/ \m/ HAIL MUSTAINE

...I'd say Megadeth's last consistently good album was "Cryptic Writings"..and bash all you want, "Risk" had a lot of good stuff on it, albeit different..I wasn't impressed with "TWNAH" and "The System Has Failed" had the first track and "Kick the Chair" and not much else that moved me, except maybe "The Scorpion"..United Abominations, as stated above, started off brilliantly with "Sleepwalker" which is definitely one of the best Megadeth songs ever..then however the album seems to lose steam real fast..The problem is that their last few albums have one or two songs that kick the shit out of you, and about 8 or 9, not so much..I actually went through my entire back catalogue and ripped all the kick ass Megadeth songs and sold 'em all back, cause I never found myself making it all the way through 'em..This new track "Headcrusher" fuckin' rips though..I can see myself jammin' this one while cruisin' down the road on a sunny day and pissing off the old lady at the red light..I will sample the album before I buy it though, because it might just be the next "Sleepwalker" and be the only real asskicking song on the album..I like Megadeth and their output has been WAY more consistent than Metallica during the '90s, but their albums have not been consistent throughout..End Of Rant..

I see alot of comments regarding dislike for Daves vocals on UA and now on this one. After thinking about it I can tell you WHY. We can all agree Dave isn't the best singer in the world BUT hes UNIQUE. And thats what makes Megadeth what it is in a way, along with his songwriting/guitar playing of course. Dave doesn't sing any more. He talks/growls. THATS the difference I think everyone is complaining about. I'm a fan from way back. I love most ALL Megadeth (with the exception of Risk, but theres a couple good songs there too IMO... just not typical Megadeth). So that being said, I too am not a fan of his new singing style. If he "sang" more on these new songs it would be far more.. well.. MEGADETH. Who cares if he can't sing well... he's what makes Megadeth. It's what helps make those old songs classic IMO. Just my two cents of course, but I think Dave needs to stop talking through songs. It sounds forced at times. It doesnt "groove". And sometimes hes cramming so much into a vocal line it sounds ridiculous. And enough of the voiceovers already. Its being overused.
Like I said I love Megadeth. Always have and always will. But if he'd change this one little thing, it would be for the better FOR ALL OF US. Long live Megadeth! First day Endgame buyer no matter how he sings (or doesn't as the case may be LOL) :)
