METAL CHURCH Calls It Quits
- July 7, 2009
|
|
Seattle, Washington-based metallers METAL CHURCH have released the following statements: "To all of our fans and friends... "We regretfully announce that METAL CHURCH is calling it quits. "The performance at Rocklahoma will be our last show. We have had to cancel the shows scheduled for August and that, among other things, has led us to have to make this decision. "There has been far too much frustration and disappointment in trying to keep moving forward. The collapse of our record company, SPV, has made it next to impossible for us to continue in any kind of professional manner due to lack of tour support. This decision was not made lightly. "We do have unfinished business in the studio, and with any luck we will have something that will be of interest to METAL CHURCH fans in the near future. "We would like to thank all the fans that have stuck with METAL CHURCH through all these years, the lineup changes and the ups and downs. "We can't tell you how much your support has meant to us, we appreciate each and every one of you. "It's been a great ride." "This Present Wasteland", the latest album from METAL CHURCH, sold 920 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. METAL CHURCH last year announced the addition of guitarist Rick Van Zandt ( THE END, ROTTWEILLER) to the group's ranks. He replaced Jay Reynolds (also of MALICE), who left the band for "personal reasons." Fan-filmed video footage of METAL CHURCH's August 14, 2008 performance at Bourbon Street in New Port Richey, Florida can be viewed below.

1) Don't blame the label, you guys have sucked since the 80's
2) Metal Church was finished in the 80's. It has been a part-time project band for one or two of the guys since the 80's. So MC called it quits a long, long time ago.
The first couple of MC records were classic. That was the end.

One of my all time favorites. I was a big fan of the Mike Howe era. Blessing in Disquise, Human Factor, and the much underated Hanging in the Balance were all staples for me! Loved the song 'Watch the Children Pray' too. Now that is how a metal ballad should be done!
Their recent stuff not quite up to par but it was still pretty good and was nice to still hear new stuff from them.
RIP - Metal Church!

the first album is probably _the_ best thrash album ever made. for sure among the top ten album of all times (in my book).
the dark is also fantastic and blessing* isn't bad at all. but after that.... well. sorry, not my cup of tea.
I sort of had hopes for the new album, but it was more of a fantasy hope than anything else I guess.

Sometimes you gotta knock it on the head and call it quits. Like everyone posted above, I put them with Flotsam and Jetsam. First two albums from both those bands were absolutely rip your head off killer classics. Then they just kinda ran out of steam.
Start-start the fire. Bring down the hammer. Start-start the fire. Burnin on forever.

Thanks for all the years of great music and memories! The bashing of Metal Church by some people above is really uncalled for. Like all bands, some albums are better than others (BID and The Dark are my faves), but Kurdt has kept the band's sound very consistent and at a high quality. Even the albums with Ronnie singing are good, certainly better than Masterpeace. Thank you, Kurdt!! Hope the Vanderhoof and Presto Ballet albums keep coming. Keep TSO sounding great on the road, too!

Like many others I loved the first couple of albums, but lost interrest after that. I got to see them live on the "Operation Rock ' n' Roll" tour back in 1990 with Alice Cooper, Judas Priest & Dangerous Toys. They were a very good live band.
As disappointing as it is to see a good band call it quits, it's good to see that they had the good sense to know it was time, unlike so many of the crappy 80's bands touring right now.
"Watch The Children Pray" is a metal classic!

Man, this band meant so much to me for so many years. The first two records are literally must owns for all Metal fans. Sadly, the last time I saw these guys was with Metallica in late 1986 at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY. They were supporting The Dark, what a great record. Start the Fire is Metal at it's best.
Watching my youth slowly fade away (especially as of late) like this, is pretty fucking beat. I can only imagine how these guys feel. WTF??

On a serious note, Metal Church was a GREAT band. The time David Wayne (rest in peace bro) was in the band was the best. "Metal Church" and "The Dark" will ALWAYS be classics!!!! You guy's never got the right push to make you king of the hill & that's a shame. Many other bands got more exposure & spotlight ect....that didnt deserve it. Metal Church did.

if 4000 more people would have bought their latest album instead of death magnetic, they had a reason to carry on and find a new label. or a label would have found them. who knows - When hetfield & company call it a day the mainstream will maybe refer to our tunes as metallica music and not as heavy metal? even though metal church may have lost it (as a result of poor sales to a certain degree), we do not deserve better if we do not give a shit about the basis. go buy demos!

Yes, MC were probably "past their prime". Their 1st two releases are classics (always will be) and weren't equaled. But they produced some FINE metal over the years, even w/ the other vocalists.
In this day and age (downloading, very few who buy cd's), stuff like this is bound to happen. Sad, but inevitable. It's a harsh new world out there...bands have to be either a) VERY creative or b) VERY popular to survive.
Thanks for all the great music guys...

Like most fans here, I was huge METAL CHURCH fan for the 1st 4 albums. The 1st album was an awesome blend of classic metal with thrash, "The Dark" reminded me of a JUDAS PRIEST on amphetamines, "Blessing in Disguise" should've put them shoulder to shoulder with METALLICA or SLAYER, and "The Human Factor" should've made them MTV stars. I lost track of them after 1992 or so. Still, this is sad news. Surely among my top 10 thrash bands of all time. R.I.P. !

Sorry, you get what you put in. MC was a part time band for years. kurt was making money doing sound for TSO like Chris Caffery was playing for TSo etc. If you want to play in a metal band and sell cds or downloads and tour, you have to put in 100%. THese guys didn't and this is exactly what is to be expected. That is life. It's not as if you took a hard working 100 PERCENT DEDICATED metal band and pulled their career out from under them. They were but not since the eighties so dont feel bad for them., MC gace up a long time ago,. It was a fun part time job.

their first album ranks as one of the greatest albums in the seminal speed metal/thrash movement. no, they weren't truly thrash but they injected a sense of speed and aggression to classic metal in a fresh way that helped shape metal history in the early 80s.
to me The Dark was a weak follow-up but Blessing was good and The Human Factor was exceptional.
i gave up on the band after that but picked up the Masterpeace album (the last one with Wayne, i believe) and, cheesy cover aside, it was great. if you like Wayne and don't have it, get it.
but their first album is a stone-cold speed/power metal classic and every song on that album is amazing. "Beyond The Black" and "Metal Church" are, i believe, two of the best underground (or mainstream, for that matter) ever.
you can criticize their image (never their strong point compared with other thrash bands; they didn't look "heavy" or "evil" enough to compare with other thrash bands and they were far too ugly, or at least pedestrian, to compare with mainstream metal bands), you can criticize some less-than-stellar albums since the classics, but one things is certain to true fans of metal...
"Metal church, unholy church, who'll be the sacrifice Metal church, the only church, don't you know the time is right Metal church will find you, can't run very far Metal church inside you, knows just who you are"
Requiescat in pace

this was gonna happen when they announced Ronnie Munroe's new solo band (which is a great band nonetheless) Everytime a frontman/vocalist has a side project it usually results in his main band splitting up. The last 3 albums are just amazing even though Kurdt Vanderhoof is the sole original member. Metal Church cancelled their show in ft worth tx a few years back and never made it up. and i cant make it to rocklahoma so now I'll never get to see Metal Church live!

Great band! I will miss them a lot!

I can't understand how anyone could suggest The Dark as being "weak" ... that album is amazing, as is the classic debut. I like the first two Howe records too, but they're not on the level of those first two IMO.
Maybe someone can do a documentary on MC like they did for Anvil, and their fortunes can reverse. Oh well, they had a good run and can always claim a couple of classic albums to their name.
Thanks for the great music guys. I'm grabbing my cd of The Dark right now. TON OF BRICKS!!!!

Watch the Children Pray, Ton of Bricks... loved early MC. Bought the latest album, didn't really like it, nothing stuck. The one before that had Mirror of Lies which rocked but not much else. They are going out with their heads held high leaving a great legacy.

As much as they have sucked since the eras of Wayne and Howe their early work will forever be treasured and it's sad to see them go.

Unless Newstead tried out for Metallica two years before Burton died. Maybe if more people could have got past the first couple of albums Metal Church made they wouldn't have to quit. They definately deserved more.

Read the facts. Actually I thought the Country Club was his SECOND gig it was 1986. I remember feeling sorry for the Church boys because we said.."how the hell are you going to come on after that?" Much like when Metallica opend for Armored Saint at The Palladium right after RTL came out.

Sad when a band quits, but I lost interest in them when Mike Howe went, like someone said before.
