SLAYER Guitarist KERRY KING: In Memory Of DIMEBAG
- July 7, 2009
|
|
SLAYER guitarist Kerry King, a close friend of the late "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott ( PANTERA, DAMAGELAN), had the legendary axeman's guitar in the studio during the recording process for SLAYER's new album, "World Painted Blood" (although he didn't use it it during the sessions), still with the same strings that were on it the last time Dimebag played it. "The one thing that made me look at my lead playing a little differently was when Dimebag passed away," revealed King. "Not that I'm going to fill Dime's shoes because nobody can do that, but I paid more attention to my leads while recording this album. I wanted to make them more memorable in memory of Dime." A short clip of King talking about lead work on the new SLAYER CD can be viewed below. For nearly three decades, bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, guitarists King and Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Dave Lombardo have proven over and over, whether in the studio or on the concert stage, that there is SLAYER and then there's everyone else. And they're about to do it again, first with the band's co-headline spot on this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and then with the late summer release of their ninth studio album, "World Painted Blood" ( American Recordings/ Columbia Records). Some dozen new songs comprise "World Painted Blood", which was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. "World Painted Blood" was produced by Greg Fidelman, who's spent time in the studio with METALLICA, THE GOSSIP, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, SLIPKNOT and others, and executive produced by longtime SLAYER colleague, Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project. Recording "World Painted Blood" was a unique experience for SLAYER who has historically begun the recording process with all songs written and fully rehearsed. This time, in part to make sure they could work with Fidelman, they had ideas, but did the bulk of writing and song development while in the studio. "Writing in the studio was a new idea for SLAYER," said Fidelman. "I think the fact that the songs were still new and fresh to them, and they hadn't been playing them for six months in rehearsal, kept the vibe and excitement in the studio very high."

nobody will ever fill dime's shoes, and if Phil, Rex, and Vinnie could get along to get into the studio, I'd bring in Zakk, he seems to be the only one who could do a respectable job.

Is this a Joke????? "I paid more attention to my leads while recording this album. I wanted to make them more memorable in memory of Dime." I guess before this he was playing the guitar without any attention, who is Kerry laughing at?? He didn't do anything in the memory of DIMEBAG.

No, you're a joke. Way to try to dissect the man's words and twist them into something negative so that you would have the opportunity to say something. We all know that without keyboard courage you really don't have much to say in your miserable life at all, do you? So sad, really.

His solos will probably be the same as before but with a pinch harmonic or two. Kerry King's solos aren't exactly worth writing home about.

you are the stupidest mother fucker on blabbermouth. You cant seem to think things through without making the most rediculous statements. Its getting really fucking anoying and im calling you out on it. Must love trolling here, im sure thats how you get off.
Now to your rediculous comment that no other guitarists can play the blues but Dime. I can name a lot, but whats the point, so I'll name one and be done with it (especially since you said they suck without a certain singer) Jerry Fuckin Cantrell

take some fucking lessons, not channel the spirit of a deceased friend. I'd just like to hear a K.K. solo without that goddamned whammy bar! try tone over tricks. silly rabbit!
Dime playing the blues? When? Where? never happened. Sure lots of his solos had feeling, but not bluesy in any sense. he never lived by the blues motto "less is more".
i have been playing guitar for over 30 years, and have been listening to much more talented guitarists than Dime. Ever heard Vinnie Moore? Tony MacAlpine? Both are ALIVE, and have been putting out the best stuff for years. Vinnie is the best player, hands down. His tone, his emotion, his skills have never wained.
Kerry has always been a rhythm player. Slayer has always suffered as a result of his guitar wankery.

i cant understand why when there is an information about KERRY KING always appears a lot of stupids with their stupids comments, slayer is the best band ever, i love all slayer records, all slayer solos, kerry and jeff are a great couple of guitar players and made histoy with their riffs and solos, tom araya is the best frontman in metal, he only has to look the audience and smile and the crowd gets crazy, and what can i say of MR DAVE LOMBARDO, the best metal drummer and the only one who had a name outside metal too, so i cant wait for the new record and im sure i will not be dissapointed SLAYER RULES !!!!!!

Ok, Dime died... we got it. He put out some great records... so noted. He was one of the best metal guitarists... check.... he was tragically removed from the world by a looser... got it.
Can we move on? We need to focus on appreciating the metal guitarists we ALREADY HAVE, and the new ones up and coming!
We can NEVER build a metal empire buy building on the graves of our dead kings... I love Dimebag, but am getting so sick of people stroking themselves over his death over and over. He's dead. Lets move on and make some metal, and honor his death, if thats the goal, but making more and better metal!

Nothing against dimebag, he is one of my favorite guitarists ever and did have much more soul in his playing than most metal guitarists, but if you're talking blues he shouldn't be in the conversation (and I have a feeling he'd tell you this himself if he could). If you want to hear versions of the blues where there aren't "too many notes that aren't saying anything" find yourself some albert king, freddie king, albert collins, hendrix or srv. Even Page and Iommi were MUCH closer to blues than darrell was. As a guitaris myself I can say without a doubt that just playing something bluesy occasionally is not the same thing as playing the blues.

SCAMBOOGERY "...Tony MacAlpine"
Right on - excellent choice.
And Spot on comment about King - rhythm is the man's strong point. Too much wammy playing during his solos - true. I find Hanneman to be the better soloist. But to be fair, live, the two do work well in the trade-off sense.
