OBITUARY: 'Darkest Day' First-Week Sales Revealed - July 8, 2009
"Darkest Day", the new album from Florida death metal legends OBITUARY, sold around 1,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (Note: Internet/digital sales **ARE** included in the SoundScan totals.) The CD landed at position No. 32 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"Darkest Day" was released on June 30 via Candlelight Records. Vocalist John Tardy previousy said about the CD, "It came out really sick and I cannot wait for you guys to hear it... it is heavy!!"

Check out the album artwork below. The band once again worked with artist Andreas Marschall, who created the art for "The End Complete", "Frozen in Time", and the group's last record, "Xecutioner's Return".

"Darkest Day" track listing:

01. List of Dead
02. Blood to Give
03. Lost
04. Outside My Head
05. Payback
06. Your Darkest Day
07. This Life
08. See Me Now
09. Fields of Pain
10. Violent Dreams
11. Truth Be Told
12. Forces Realign
13. Left to Die

An e-card for "Darkest Day" is available at this location. It features audio clips of three songs from the CD —"List of Dead", "Blood to Give" and "Payback".

Guitarist Ralph Santolla previously said about the new material, "The new stuff is HEAVY, some of my favorite OBI riffs yet. Trevor's [Peres] guitar sounds huge and menacing. If you like OBITUARY, you're gonna love this record."

OBITUARY will release a new concert DVD, tentatively titled "Live Xecution In Bad Berka 2008", later in the year via Regain Records. The footage for the disc was filmed at last year's Party.San Open Air festival, which was held August 7-9, 2008 in Bad Berka, Germany.

Commented bassist Frank Watkins: "We did over 30 festivals last summer and the Party.San festival was the very last and best one for OBITUARY... Fortunately, the show was filmed."

OBITUARY last year released the "Left To Die" EP via Candlelight Records. The CD contains four songs: two new originals, a new 2008 studio recording of "Slowly We Rot", and a cover of "Dethroned Emperior" by CELTIC FROST. The EP also includes the band's popular "Evil Ways" video.

i predicted 2000 copies, but only 1,200??? How do these guys survive?

glad they released the album though because it's much better than their last 2. More of an "End Complete" / "World Demise" feel to it which is awesome.

agreed that the album cover is lame, but the music is all that matters here. This album is a lot slower pace than their last few. The couple of albums that came out after Slowly We Rot best resemble the riffs and pace of this one.

The only main difference here are the guitar solos which I'm not all that used to with Obituary.

one more quick note. This one is a lot more like Frozen in Time than Xecutioner. Personally I think that's a good thing.

The new album is perfectly solid but for me, I just don`t need another Obituary album. Everything they`ve done sounds so similar...I`d play this half a dozen times and then just go back to listening to the first 2 again...same as I`ve done for just about all their other later albums!

I agree that this sounds more like the same. I don't sense any progression in their work.
I think Cause of Death is still their definitive album.

Amen.

I don't think the album cover has much to do with music and compared to a lot of Photoshop bullshit it actually isn't that bad. I guess people aren't used to seeing "real" artwork anymore. Overall it is a decent cover but not the best.

I think Obituary needs to take a bit of time off from recording they are just releasing album after album and including the Tardy Bros release seems like a new album is out every other year or sooner. It has gotten stale and seems like they have ran out of steam.

Bands are supposed to constantly release albums. Look at the early years of Priest, Ozzy, Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth, Crue, Kiss, Saxon, Dio, AC/DC, Ratt etc....

Its supposed to be like that

I liked the new album quite a bit - well worth checking out. You can normally get to listen to stuff on lala.com - they should have the entire new album up for streaming soon.

This is easily one of Obituary's best albums, and a top 10 so far this year. Worth the price of admission just for the solos and the fucking heavy drum sound.

1200 copies the first week lol.. which mean tops by week 4 its not selling at all. you have about 50 to maybe 100 fat kids that watch this band play a night . basically because they suck!!! go listen to some real metal like metallica or killswitch engage or megadeth !!!!! and leave this shitty band where they belong.. floating in the toilet waiting to be flushed with a big steaming pile lol!!!!!!!!!!!!

killswitch suck, metallica havent made a good album since MoP, you just cant compaire them to Obituary.

i feel the sales reflect the promotion the label did for it. i was looking forward to gettin this but i forgot when it was coming out. Suffocations new album is out on the 14th, i can tell you that cuz im seeing ads for it everywhere, unlike this album.

Not to start any real trouble here... but I didn't realize this is a dead genre. I also was unaware that killswitch engage can pass as so called 'real' metal, while the one of the creators of death metal are apparently only destined for a crap heap.

OBITUARY rules because they are Obituary only. Santolla adds a good touch with his solos.

I'll tell you why the numbers are so low:
a) people steal music off the Internet and don't support the bands that need it (and don't buy enough merch).
b) no music store in my city (and it's a major one) has this disc available to purchase. Fuckin' distribution!

as mentioned above the sales are likely not very good due to distribution. I went to my record store and I had to order it so I am still waiting for my copy to come. I hope I dont gotta do the same shit for the new Suffocation.

I am disappointed with the first week sales for this album. It's just sad how bad downloading is now a days. I was really shocked when Cannibal Corpse sold 9,600 copies in their first week! That is really good for them. Hell, if people couldn't download music. it's hard telling what Cannibal Corpse would've done their first week! Make double that!

I really miss the old days before all this downloading bullshit. I like the music being accessible but I don't like it how people can just down load everything because it really makes it hard for the bands to survive. That is why band touring more. It's the only way they can make their money now. (I'm not in a band either)

Obituary needs a better push though. I love the new album. If they could get on some bigger tours as support it would help them just as it's helped Cannibal Corpse. I hope they keep going. I missed Obituary when they were gone and are glad they're back!

Let's face it, the 90s are gone and Obituary left a good part of its fanbase there. I always liked them but the new material triggers no reaction from me. It's just OK. I do not accept 'just OK' and therefore I will not buy the albums. Their 'classic trilogy' remains a must but everything else, sadly, is disposable.

If the band keeps releasing stuff to justify touring well, so be it; That's theyr paychack. I hope everyone still has an outside income.

Obituary really kicks ass, no matter how many records they sale or not, the important is the quality of the songs. I'm sure the new shit is gonna be just as good as Xecutioner's is. IT'S GONNA KICK ASS!!!!!
