TONY MARTIN's HEADLESS CROSS: North American Tour Cancelled
- July 9, 2009
|
|
Former BLACK SABBATH singer Tony Martin's previously announced U.S. tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the SABBATH album "Headless Cross" has been cancelled. Martin says, "We are so disappointed." A statement from Frank Welcker of Shakers Management Group reads as follows: "Due to personal and creative differences, Shakers Management Group truly regrets to say that the HEADLESS CROSS tour will be canceled. All ticket refunds will be handled by the venues. "All parties involved express their deep sadness that we couldn't come to terms and we wish to apologize to all the fans and venues for any inconvenience this may have caused." It is not presently clear if there are any plans to reschedule the dates. Martin's band, which was to be called HEADLESS CROSS, was set to include the following musicians: Tony Martin (BLACK SABBATH)- Vocals Rolf Munkes (EMPIRE) - Guitar Jamie Mallender - Bass Danny Needham (BAILEY'S COMET, RAZORBACK) - Drums Geoff Nicholls (BLACK SABBATH) – Keyboards BLACK SABBATH released six albums with Tony Martin on vocals: "The Eternal Idol" (1987), "Headless Cross" (1989), "Tyr" (1990), "Cross Purposes" (1994), "Cross Purposes Live" (1995) and "Forbidden" (1995)

First this tour was announced less than 2 weeks before it was to commence, then the tour was routed across North America in a path that omitted most major concert markets. Hopefully they can go back to the drawing board and put together a more sensible itinerary, as there are a fair amount of people in the U.S. and Canada that would come out to see this I think.

I expect low ticket sales didn't help much either. Anouncing a tour 2 weeks before it starts for a band of this size is pretty stupid.

The Tony Martin era of Black Sabbath is the best...in my opinion...very dark and heavy.
"The Eternal Idol" and "TYR" are ultimate metal classics.

from a guy who was in Sabbath at their lowest point commercially, not TOO surprising that it went belly up! that said, he did make a few good albums with Sabbath, although 'Forbidden' may be Sabbath's absolute low point, what an abysmal album!

Like the Headless tour, little to one cares. Although Headless Cross was a good album, each show probably would only average 75 people in N. America.

Will all three people who purchased advanced tickets get refunds?
I remember planning to go check out the Martin era Sabs on the Headless Cross tour, but that was cancelled due to poor ticket sales, despite a lot of advertisement in the local papers.
Marting era the heaviest? Now that was pure comedy gold. It was certainly the cheesiest. :)

I love all Sabbath time periods, own everything. Hope this happens again at some point. Some of the critics here are real fuckin assholes. Tony Martin came in at a time when Sabbath was at its lowest. Dio had left, and the excitement that Ian Gillian brought after Dio had faded. All there was, was the Seventh Star album (with Glenn Hughes singing), which is a fine album itself, but certainly could not compare to what had come before it. Sabbath was hurting. An in stepped Tony Martin. Sounding a bit too much like DIo for some, but being a very competent singer with his own touch. He fought for years to bring Sabbath back. The Eternal Idol (1986), Headless Cross (1987), TYR (1990). All those albums were fucking awesome. But touring wise, the numbers began to shine by the time of TYR. Sabbath had regained a lot of what it had lost. Then, without warning, then DIo reunion happened with Dehumanizer (1992) which is a fine album, but certainly sounds a lot more like what DIO was up to at that time than what Sabbath was doing. Of course, as we all know, that time period with Dio didn't last. I was at the 2 night Costa Mesa, No More Tours tour thing in November of 92. No Dio. And Sabbath got their mini reunion with Ozzy on the last night. Rob Halford Sang for Sabbath during their sets for both of the nights. That was awesome, but it wasn't Dio, and it wasn't Tony Martin who by that point deserved to be there. SO then, Sabbath goes back to Tony Martin, patch things up, they do Cross Purposes (1994). That was a pretty decent tour that produced a live video (can be found on dvd though I think it might be out of print). Then they sack Tony Martin again, I forget why. I think it was a premature attempt at an Ozzy reunion or something. ANyway, that doesn't happen and they try to get Tony Martin to come back again. He's pissed, but does his final album with Sabbath, the album Forbidden (1995), which is pretty much the worst Sabbath album. It does have some great things on it though.
Then we have the Ozzy reunion. And now the Dio reunion (which makes me very damn happy). But Tony Martin was a huge part of Sabbath, 5 albums plus the live video. He's a nice guy and deserves better than he got dealt. And the sound of Sabbath during the Tony Martin time period (particularly Eternal Idol through TYR) is really something of a continuation of the sounds that are on the albums Heaven and Hell and The Mob Rules.
The Dio time period will always be my favorite, but Tony Martin really did some fine work with Sabbath.

I was hoping this would come about. Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath has it's share of great tunes. I remember seeing a press release or something from the "management" behind this tour. It might've been on Myspace, I'm not sure where it was. But it seemed pretty unprofessional. This has gotta feel like a total Spinal Tap moment to the band. Maybe if they had a single or had been paired up with a bigger band... Really though, It was fucking poorly organized right from the start. Advertising a tour with no actual dates.

No, these were not the brightest + best Sabbath albums, but Martin was there for this band when the chips were down (and got treated pretty much like an employee throughout his tenure). I certainly wish the best for him and this effort...I might even be tempted to check them out (so long as Ticketbastard / Jive Nation doesn't jack up the prices too much).

How this for a tour? You could book Tony Martin, Tim Owens, and Blaze Bailey they could play all the songs from their era with their respective bands and even play like their fav 2 actual well known songs that they had to do in concert. Now that would sell tickets because it would be worth it!!!
The Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden tour... sort of..

I bet this has something to do with that lawsuit by 'Ozzy (coughSHARONcough) against Tony for part of the Sabbath name, and therefore royalties from use of the brand name... which would seem (to me) to include this tour as it's being advertised.
If 'Ozzy' wins the suit, they would have to fork over $$ from every gig to Ozzy Inc.

I love Tony's work in Sabbath and would have liked to have seen him live. But a tour in America to be honest seemed like a lost cause. After all America seems to have just figured out there there was a Sabbath past Ozzy with Dio. Don't think America on a large scale is ready for Tony Martin. Of course I'm referring to the average numskull in America who is clueless. For those of us who appreciate all of Sabbath, well there is not enough of us here for a Tony Martin tour to work. I hate to say that. Plus this tour was planned out pretty poorly. The show in GA. was competing with Whitesnake/Priest, now that wasn't throughout very well was it. But I do hope it could be worked out somehow. Martin's Sabbath albums are the best thing that band has done since Mob Rules'. I am a big fan and would love to see him live.

I love Tony Martin, think he's a kickass vocalist, and love the stuff he did with Sabbath. That said, I think this tour had cancellation written all over it from the announcement forward.
But, do come to America, Tony - if Michael Schenker can bring his group to bars and clubs across the country, after years of cancellations and no shows, there's no reason to think you couldn't do the same. No, you're not going to get rich doing it, but, if you want to establish a solo career, you've got to do it by getting out here and touring the country, back and forth, over and over again. You don't want people forgetting your important contribution to the greatest heavy metal band of all-time.
It'll take some work, and you'll probably have to lose some money first, before it starts to trickle back in, but, it's a worthwhile endeavor, and there are thousands of us fans waiting to see you make it happen. Don't give up!

I could never get into him. It felt like it was too little too late. I went back and listened to it again today and its better than I remembered. I think I'm a little more open to that style of singing now.
Either way I think they would have done a lot better with him if he had been a little more evil or mysterious and also if he had been able to play in front of a consistent lineup. I'll check the shit out again and see how it goes. I'm surprised to see so much praise for him.

After a couple of Heaven & Hell tours Dio will be back off to do another Dio band album. Tony I. will never play with Ozzy again, now that Ozzy has sued him. With all that in mind I can kind of see Tony, Geezer, and maybe Bill, doing some shows with various other previous Sabbath singers. They may not be huge shows, but it gives them the chance to heal some old wounds while allowing them the chance to play some songs they've been unable to do with in years.
