BILL STEER On Possibility Of New CARCASS Album: 'At The Moment, It's Simply Not Practical' - July 10, 2009
Paul Groome of Drop-d recently conducted an interview with CARCASS guitarist/FIREBIRD frontman Bill Steer. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Drop-d: Your guitar playing style differs greatly between CARCASS and FIREBIRD. Did you find it difficult to change your way of thinking back to CARCASS, or was it like fitting into an old glove?

Bill Steer: It was actually. I was really apprehensive. I didn't know if I was capable of playing that style of music. But it ended up being just like flicking a switch. I just locked right back into it. I later realized that, because of so many gigs and rehearsals and recording with CARCASS, it was sort of programmed into my muscles. So it ended up being quite easy. The most interesting thing was getting back into that whole scene though. It's a whole other world that I hadn't been involved in for such a long time. And also playing to huge audiences, which was very weird for me.

Drop-d: Yes, I had heard that Jeff [Walker; bass, vocals] and Ken [Owen; drums] were very aware of the influence that CARCASS had on the metal genre but it was something that really surprised you…

Bill Steer: Yeah, it's true. I really was quite sceptical about the whole thing, and then once we were out there….wow! What a shock! I realized quite quickly that in some ways CARCASS are more popular now than we ever were in the old days. And also it's attracting a lot of younger people who were scarcely alive when we were doing our thing. Which is really great…I mean, if the music stands up THAT well with people who don't have a nostalgia factor, they just like the records from hearing them recently, that's all to the better.

Drop-d: Did you find the chemistry between Jeff Walker, Michael Amott, Daniel Erlandsson and yourself when you first got back together to jam?

Bill Steer: Well, it started off with Michael and I just getting together in his kitchen. That was just the first step. Rather than get a whole band in a room, and find out that it doesn't work or whatever, we thought, let's just try this one-to-one without any pressure. And it was fine, yeah. I've played with several guitar players over the years, but with Mike, I really felt there was something going on. We would spur each other on. He would come up with some great riffs, and the inspiration I would get from hearing him playing would get me going… Those older records were full of moments like that.

Drop-d: And would it be enough get CARCASS back in the studio?

Bill Steer: At the moment, it's simply not practical. I wouldn't rule it out entirely. That's just foolish. I mean, I think I was quoted once as saying, "I'll never play in CARCASS again," but here we are… But ARCH ENEMY are extremely busy, and there's a fair amount of pressure on Michael and Daniel to limit their involvement with CARCASS and concentrate on their main thing, ARCH ENEMY. So I really think something drastic would have to happen before CARCASS would release a new recording.

I had the pleasure of living out a dream of mine by seeing Carcass this past March...I got into them when I was 14 or 15, around the time Swansong came out and the band dissolved...this was one band I was convinced I'd never see live!

To top it off, I met the entire band (except for Ken of course), got my albums signed, and got pics with them all. They were some of the most friendly, down-to-earth characters I've ever met, and I've met quite a few metal musicians. They hung out with the die-hards who were willing to wait for them (well over an hour after the show ended) for quite a while before they had to take off. Best part was it was Jeff's 40th birthday, so getting to wish him in person was a real treat.

Even if they never play live again, I can die a happy man. However, if they do, you can bet I'll fucking be there.

Great Band. I agree, just tour every so often. I saw them on the Gods of Grind Tour in Germany "back in the day".

In the music biz this means "it's gonna happen, we're just warming everyone up with publicity, after being away for so long"

I'm listening to their song Death Certificate off their album Heartwork at the moment. It's sounding really cool so far. I wonder when or if they'll enact upon this possibility of a new Carcass album.

By the way, if none of you have seen me around before, it is because this is my very first post on this website.

They sound great live, saw them 5 times. Bill Steer was the only nice guy to me. Actually talking and taking pictures. Amott just kept to himself, and Erlandson only cares if you have tits. Jeff was kinda cool to an extent. But a new album would sound more like new Arch Enemy then Carcass, and Arch Enemy isn't worth shit anymore. To me its just not Carcass, its 3 guys and a fill in drummer. I think if they did do a new album it'd be better if they got someone who was a part of the original scene. More of a common thread of history.

I love Carcass but a new album could only be disapointing. Much as I'd like it to be, it's not going to be Heartwork mark II. Even if they wanted to make another Heartwork after all these years they just aren't the same people or the same musicians.

At the Gates & Sleep had the right idea. Give the old songs a proper final airing, put the band to bed and move on.

I can't think of any really great bands who've been broken up for 10 years plus and then come back with an album that lived up to their history.

At The Gates and Carcass need to release a proper live DVD from these tours if you aren't going to release new music. Some of us have jobs that prevent us from going to shows since they are all on fucking weekdays around here.

I agree it`s probably best left...Carcass were turning a bit dodgy towards the end of their career anyway and individually they`ve never recorded anything since that`s up to much...I`m not sure a new album would be so great.

i like arch enemy and all but what metal record company/exec. or manager in their right mind would pressure Daniel and Michael to limit their involvement with Carcass? they gotta realize that this would be one of the most anticipated metal albums in a very long time.

but I totally agree that At The Gates probably couldnt have made anything that would stand up to SLaughter of the SOul nowadays. but think about it, Carcass's last one (swangsong) was a dissapointment for many fans. Picture now if they released something along the lines of (in my opinion their best album) Necroticism.

Cool interview.. I hope they do record something, they sound awesome now! Probably just waiting for more money? And yeah.. there'd be no Arch Enemy without Carcass, I can't imagine anyone thinking Mike would be dumb to put more time into Carcass if its for real!

Come on Bill, make it happen! A new Carcass album is long over due, the world needs it! Arch Enemy can take a break for a year or so :) - all due respect to Arch Enemy, great music and all, but it's fucking CARCASS we're talking about here, a legend that needs to be continued while you still can. I've listened to Nectoticism more times than any other album on the planet, and it's STILL an awesome ride every time I listen. It's STILL better than all the other shit out there. PLEASE for the love of great music MAKE ANOTHER ALBUM!
