Former WARRANT Singer JANI LANE Officially Charged With DUI - July 11, 2009
According to TMZ.com, former WARRANT frontman Jani Lane was officially charged with DUI and hit-and-run.

The 45-year-old singer was busted on June 17 when he allegedly hit a parked car in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles. Lane refused to take a sobriety test.

If convicted, Lane could get six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

He was set to be arraigned yesterday (Friday, July 11).

When asked in a May 18, 2009 interview with "The Johnny Dare Morning Show" how he managed to "get straight," Jani replied, "It's just a matter of deciding you're done, in my opinion. I mean, that probably oversimplifies it, but really, really and truly you have to go, 'You know what? I'm done with this. I don't like feeling like this, I don't like living like this.' And it's also nice to get the creativity back, which is impossible to flow when you're unconscious."

Lane originally left WARRANT in 2002 to pursue a solo career. He released a solo album, "Back Down to One", in 2003, but shortly after was admitted to a rehab center for alcohol and drug-related exhaustion. He also appeared on VH1's reality series "Celebrity Fit Club".

WARRANT announced in September 2008 that it was splitting with Jani Lane six months after the band first reunited with the troubled vocalist. He has since been replaced by Robert Mason (LYNCH MOB, CRY OF LOVE, BIG COCK).

why is it only $1000 but a full 6 months in jail? not that ppl ever do the full time mind you, but I'd rather pay more and do no time. He'll probably just end up on a new version of celeb rehab with Adler and the crew. at least he didnt hurt anyone thank god...

Audie Pitre was my best friend, and although alcholism may be a disease, people make the choice to get behind the wheel of a car drunk. They choose to get in the car without a designated driver and take off driving knowing they can kill someone. Knowing that is like taking a pistol sticking a round in, and playing russian roulette. So to say that it's o.k. or excusable that Jani Lane did this again after he's done it before, just because he has a disease is bullshit. He CHOSE to drive drunk, so tell my best friend's son That it was o.k. that his dad and grandparents are dead because of someone's "disease" and see if he thinks it's o.k.

As much as I appreciate Jani's ability as a songwriter, and the fact that he's a hell of a performer when he has his shit together, good for him to get this. He deserves it, and I am sick of celebs, even has-beens, thinking they are above the law. Good thing he didn't injure anyone, a la Vince Neil.

He didn't leave in 2002. He left briefly in 1993 for seven months to go solo when Columbia Records pulled the plug on the tour and then they dropped the band after he left. He left the band in January 2004 and took along four other member of Warrant to be part of his solo band.

It's a long way down since the excellent Uncle Tom's Cabin and the entire Dog Eat Dog album for that matter. That old Aerosmith tune 'Jani's Got A Gun' may be weirdly topical soon. I hope not. Shame to see them fall.

Man I remember my DUI, fucking sucks!! Was a full year of classes, fines, fees, court dates, breathalyzers, and I'm in a more lax state when it comes to DUI laws, AND i didn't hit anybody lol.

... all of you demonizing someone the minute they get charged with a DUI are guilty of grossly oversimplifying as well. There is a broad spectrum of what the law considers drunkenness, and at the lower end of that range - .08 BAC - it's highly arguable whether that person is any more impaired than someone driving while talking on a cell phone (evens a hands free one) or someone driving on 2-3 hours sleep.

Now, knowing Jani's history I don't doubt that he was way over that and being flat out stupid but I find the knee jerk moralists when it comes to DUIs are typically people who don't drink or have a wife and kid so they're forced to do most of their drinking at the house anyway. Those people can afford to look down on someone who gets a DUI because they're never in a position where they have to make that decision anyway.

In a word, Jani definitely needs help but don't paint all drinkers with that same brush. DUIs are classic laws that are infrequently and selectively enforced and so they can afford to set the bar unreasonably low because only a small number of people who drive after a few beers will ever get busted for it... hence the lack of public outcry to get these BAC limits upped to a reasonable threshold. But until then, from a moral perspective you have to take it on a case by case basis and not assume everyone that gets behind the wheel after happy hour is a would-be baby killer.
