LAYNE STALEY: Eighth Annual Tribute & Benefit Concert Announced - July 11, 2009
LIVE's Ed Kowalczyk and SECOND COMING have been confirmed for the eighth annual Layne Staley Tribute & Benefit Concert, set to take place on August 22, 2009 at Showbox Market in Seattle Washington.

Every year in mid-August, Layne Staley Fund celebrates Layne's birthday by putting on its annual tribute and benefit concert. The tribute team takes extra care to create a close, personal experience that shares its love of Layne and its message of hope to everyone by having special guests and surprises throughout the evening.

Raffles, a silent auction, and the merchandise booth debut the official Layne Staley Fund tribute poster, t-shirt and calendar designed especially for the tribute year.

Proceeds from the tribute, merchandise sales, raffles, and donations go toward funding heroin recovery in the Seattle music community.

Donations made to Layne Staley Fund during the months of May, June, July, and August will go directly to bringing the headlining bands to the eighth annual tribute.

Donations can be made on here or mailed to:

Layne Staley Fund
P.O. Box 40531
Bellevue, WA 98015

On what would have been his 42nd birthday, Layne Staley's family, friends and fans will come together to celebrate the life of the former ALICE IN CHAINS lead singer, who died of heroin addiction in 2002.

The mission of Layne Staley Fund is to provide hope, awareness, education, support and treatment funds for heroin recovery in the Seattle music community.

Proceeds raised at each year's tribute are donated to Therapeutic Health Services, Seattle, Layne Staley Memorial Fund, an endowment which now stands at $85,000.

People know heroin is bad, bad stuff. Why people even start using that shit is a mystery to me. The only message of hope from Layne is "I hope you don't start using this shit, like me."

Drugs are stupid. I just don't see the appeal and I've seen people do coke and crack...really disgusting shit. Never seen anyone do heroine in person...again real stupid.

Layne Staley was an amazing talent and left us way too soon RIP. Saw AIC on the Dirt tour...awesome show.

Strange how AIC is not on this bill. Anyway the band Live is very underrated and I'm sure Ed will perform a great tribute.

COMMENT | Layne was weak. The band must move on.

my cousin lived next to Second Coming's guitarist. His wife was getting rid of him because he wasn't making it anywhere and was walking around in "rocker gear" in his late thirties and what not. Looks like she was totally wrong, as they are now almost headlining a tribute show next to a singer from a band that used to be huge! Ha! Showed her.....
The new Alice In Chains is fucking awesome...holy shit...RIP Layne

why would anyone waste time and money on a tribute to a junkie?sure he made some good music but chose to live the life that killed him.everybody has problems and he chose to deal with his by putting a needle in his arm.even the most stupid of people have to know nothing good can come of doing that so no tributes from me. if they want to get a message out they should play his music then show a picture of his body to show what happens if you choose to do drugs.spare me the bleeding heart stories about why people do it,how many must od' before you ficure out it might not be so cool to to do drugs?

Man, I gotta say, you seem to post on the same threads that I do, so I guess that means that we sorta dig the same music, and thats cool. BUT, other than that, you really are one of the most emotionally stunted, ill-informed, ignorant and immature posters I have ever seen on here. Flaunting the fact that you are not an addict means shit. You have absolutely ZERO empathy for the problems of your fellow man...this in itself shows a profound lack of intelligence. I am guessing your age to be very early twenties (I hope) because that is probably par for the course and there is hope for you yet. But in reality, I'm guessing you are in your mid to late thirties by now, and that your emotional and intellectual immaturity can only be repaired by years of intensive therapy. Good luck with that.

NO ONE IS PRAISING LAYNE AS BEING A HEREO AS YOU SAY. IT'S SIMPLY A TRIBUTE BY PEOPLE WHO CARED ENOUGH ABOUT HIM TO REMEMBER HIM AND HIS TALENTS. LAYNE MAY HAVE CHOSE TO STICK HIS ARM BUT DON'T DENY THE POWER OF ADDICTION-IT WAS PROBABLY HIS BIGGEST REGRET. YES YOU ARE ENTITLED TO POSTING AS IS EVERYONE ELSE ON BLABBERMOUTH, BUT TO POST SOMETHING AS JUDGEMENTAL AND NEGATIVE TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE LAYNE'S LIFE WAS SOME KIND OF WASTE IS A CHEAP SHOT. WHAT MAKES YOUR JUDGEMENT SO ALMIGHTY?.....I DON'T DO DRUGS AND RARELY DRINK BUT I WOULD NEVER JUDGE ANYONE EXCEPT BY THE WAY THEY TREATED PEOPLE AND FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND LAYNE WAS A GOOD PERSON AND TREATED PEOPLE WELL...

Nice posts, you fucking child.

Ignorance is not an excuse for the closed minded posts you have spewed upon us here. Addiction is a disease, not a choice. Layne tried like hell to quit, you obviously have no idea about him or his struggles with drugs.

I guess people that get cancer shouldn't be honored after they die either under your warped sense of thinking, should they? You dumb fucking redneck?

deflepplin--there is no way this guy is in his early 20's....guys in their early 20's generally don't listen to good music like AIC. This fuckstick is in his mid 40's, lives in his mom's basement, and hasn't touched a vagina in at least 15 years.

There is more to people than their addictions you idiot. I guess we should all define Layne as heroin addict and not brilliant vocalist for a great band? What an idiot you are. If you knew how many "addicts" or drug users were in the bands you love you wouldn't have many left to choose from. The guy never glorified drug use and filled his lyrics with dark twisted tales of why you SHOULD not do it. It was stupid that he chose to do heroin but it does not DEFINE who he is as a person and what he accomplished. It is a fucking tragedy because of this drug he is gone and it is a tragedy he could not over come his demons or addiction.

As others have said you seem to miss the point of everything and seem like a total heartless scumbag with zero compassion for human life. I'm glad your so proud to be a douche bag. Congrats!

Cancer = disease
Chemical dependency = disease

No choice in the matter for either. Yes, you can avoid cancer by doing (or not doing) certain things. Yes, a drug addict makes a choice to use or not use.

Your moronic comments regarding a fucking BENEFIT CONCERT to assist those in need are uncalled for and immature.

using laggerlugger's train of thought cancer is kind of tricky.... if someone was say a smoker or worked around materials that could be cancer causing and got cancer... using laggerlugger's train of thought that would make them no different than a heroin user since they made the choice to smoke or work around those chemicals. Laggerlugger you sound like a idiot shut the fuck up and post on another thread already. You refuse to understand the simple point of this whole topic and sound like a moron.

Maybe if I used all caps and dumbed it down for you, you might understand..

PEOPLE CELEBRATE LAYNE FOR HIS MUSICAL TALENT NOT HIS DRUG USE...

THIS TRIBUTE SHOW IS USED TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF USING DRUGS AND ALSO RAISES MONEY TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED LOOKING TO GET CLEAN.

There now maybe you can get through your pea brain the WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF THIS POST AND STOP RANTING ABOUT YOUR LACK OF A BASIC CONCEPT!!! GOD DAMN IT YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT!

HOW MANY PEOPLE ON HERE NEED TO TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT UNDERSTANDING THE POINT BEFORE YOU FINALLY REALIZE IT??!! FOR FUCK'S SAKE ARE YOU RETARDED OR SOMETHING?

I am 21. I listen to great music. I don't listen to whatever Mtv, VH1 or any other nationally-televised music channel says is good. I listen for myself. I still think AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, MotherLoveBone, etc, etc were great. Fortunately enough, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney still exist to this day. I have not heard the new AIC, so I shall not make any statements for, or against it. I like Ozzy Osbourne, but his wife is a useless hack. Zakk Wylde may be technically talented, but all his riffs sound alike these days. How about that video of him at the NBA playoffs beating his chest as if he were a gorilla??? Yeah, exactly... How many of you on here like Dream Theater? I am reviewing their new album for my campus radio station, 88.3 WMTS. I appreciate each member being uber-talented, but their music bores me to death at times.

I loved Dream Theater up until 6 degrees of inner turbulence after that Dream Theater started trying to be thrash metal or something and Mike Portnoy started doing terrible background vocals all the time which to me has ruined many of their newer material. Every time I start to get into a new song of theirs here come his terrible shouts that just take all the emotion and power out of everything. I keep trying to like their last few albums but other than a few decent tracks here and there it is pretty bad. Still respect the hell out of them as musicians and John Petrucci is my favorite technical guitar player but the songs just aren;t cutting it lately. Mike Portnoy please just play drums again and stop the background shouts they RUIN the songs.

Dream Theater, in my opinion, is the best band to continuously make great music for the past 17 years -- admittedly, I'm a guitar player and am completely in awe of John Petrucci in all obvious technical aspects. But it's his songwriting that is the most amazing. Look at the best songs on any DT album and they're all written by JP. Their last few albums are very good, but unfortunately there are some songs that do get skipped over -- especially on Systematic Chaos....HOWEVER, I think In The Presence of Enemies (parts 1 and 2) from that album is one of the best songs in the DT catalog, highlighted by some of JP's masterful slow/feel parts. Anybody that thinks JP is all flash and no feel really needs to look deeper -- one of his best solos is Lines in the Sand from Falling Into Infinity -- another slow emotional piece that almost brought me to tears when I was running my marathon earlier this year.
They're definitely an acquired taste, but once the hooks are in, that's it. This is not a band whose songs you will appreciate on a first, second or third listen -- the music is so complex that it takes time to separate, but that gives it staying power so it never gets boring.

I actually played the Seventh Annual Layne Benefit, at Showbox Sodo, last year. Of all the gigs I have ever done, that was the most powerful. I am a recovering addict myself, and right before we went onstage, Laynes' mother brought about 50 recovering addicts onstage to announce their clean time, and the entire crowd recited the serenity prayer. It was one of the most powerful spiritual experiences I have ever been a part of, and it was all because of addiction- Laynes', and the thousands upon the thousands of people who might be served in some small way by Laynes death. Laggerlugger, you just don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

In his last interview, which was given in early 2002 months before his death, Staley admitted, "I know I'm near death, I did crack and heroin for years. I never wanted to end my life this way."

"I'm not using drugs to get high like many people think. I know I made a big mistake when I started using this shit. It's a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning, and I'm throwing up all the time and shitting my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It's the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body."

Spare you the bleeding heart story. RIP Layne. It seems to me that with true talent, often comes tragedy. How sad.
