NEIL PEART, LARS ULRICH, MIKE PORTNOY Honored At This Year's 'Drummies' - July 12, 2009
RUSH drummer Neil Peart has garnered his third consecutive victory as "Drummer Of The Year" in this year's Drummies. He was also named "Best Progressive Drummer."

Enter Music Publishing, publishers of hip, drum magazines worldwide, conducts the Drummies every year, with voting open to anyone from February to May. This year, 5,310 votes were cast in 41 drum/percussion categories ranging from "Best Drummer" to "Best Drum Advertisement."

While Peart has successfully demonstrated his popularity in the last three Drummies, his margin of victory was less than in the last two years, according to Phil Hood, publisher and co-founder of DRUM! magazine. Runner-up Travis Barker gave Peart a serious run and had been the most frequent winner (three victories) prior to Peart's popularity. Thus, Barker remains a very influential, popular drummer as well.

According to Hood, "Peart's success probably stems from the resurgence of RUSH's popularity over the same time period that he has won the Drummies. There's no doubt that RUSH's hyper drive back into mainstream success has propelled Peart to these victories," he notes.

All winners and runners-up in the 41 categories can be viewed in print in the August issue of DRUM! magazine and online at this location.

Gotta love those popularity contests. It's the only way Larz would ever win "best" anything when it comes to drumming.

some of these drummers haven't even laid down any music in the past year. i love peart, but i mean i wouldn't pick him as drummer of the year unless he played on an album that deemed him worthy.

and Lars has failed to impress since Justice.

you would figure all these voters would be listening to more drummers than the high profile ones.

Lars? best metal drummer? Put freaking Tomas Haake in there.

And since when does Travis Baker even come close to Neil Peart?

This is more a popularity contest than anything. Otherwise, how do you justify Lars Ulrich as best metal drummer? That's not to take anything away from Neil Peart - everyone knows he's the best and untouchable! But awards like these are seldom based on proficiency and mostly about popularity.

I'd be fine with never hearing about Peart, Portnoy, or Ulrich again. Sure two of them are great drummers, but, Jesus Christ, there are other drummers who are just as good.

It seems at least 5,000 people voted these as the best. Pretty much outnumbers the ones of you that disagree!

Maybe someday you'll realise that your opinions are disagreed with by the majority!

5,310 votes is a microscopic percentage of those who have an opinion about "best" drummers. That's why these so-called contests are biased and flawed from the start. The votes are not based on the majority, but rather the exact opposite.

Drumming is not about coming up with the hardest part to play or how fast you can drum or how many notes you can fit here.
Lars writes awesome drum parts plain and simple!!! Parts that fit the song, yes there was a time when he was more progressive ala the justice album. When I still listen to that album to this day his drumming on there is still better then any metal band around today. Also the best drum sound ever recorded!! Lars just isnt' into the double bass like he used to be so what he still kicks ass!!!

John Stanier, Danny Carey, Gil Sharone, Aaron Harris, Tomas Haake...come on, there are so many other drummers that should have gotten these awards. Not to say that guys like Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and Josh Freese aren't amazing drummers, but there are so many other drummers who are doing very innovative things with the art and deserve some recognition for it.

COMMENT | If You Don't Like The Winners Express Your Opinion By Voting

For all of the people, who are pissed or upset about the winners, the question that I have for you is this: Did you vote? The Drummies, as noted above allows anyone to vote. Here's the text:

"Enter Music Publishing, publishers of hip, drum magazines worldwide, conducts the Drummies every year, with voting open to anyone from February to May. " (See above story.)

Thus, you don't have to be a subscriber to DRUM! or work in the industry. Voting is open to anybody. DRUM! has been around for along time; there was no "rigging" the results. It was all based on votes from the 5,000 + drummers, musicians, who decided to express their opinions about best drummers/ ads, etc.

So, be pissed and vote next year. Have a nice day.

COMMENT | Again, If You're Angry - Vote Otherwise Don't Diss Other People

I posted earlier regarding this story. I wish that some of these angry people would just vote. None of them are saying that they voted. Polls like The Drummies always bring out the negative in people because they think they know everything. And, what makes a great drummer or artist is one, who realizes that there is something always new to learn. Buddy Rich and other drummers, Bonham as well, would always be obsessive about learning.

So, once again, if you're angry, why not take that anger and think about who you would vote for next year. Time flies you know...

Good day.

As noted above, Travis Barker was a runner-up in DRUM! Magazine's "Drummie Of The Year." Now, DRUM! reports once again on Travis in its October Issue. One of the many highlights of this story are the pictures of Barker's new drum set that flies. Ironic considering his near-death airplane crash several years ago. For more info, visit
