AEROSMITH Frontman Dumps Longtime Manager
- July 17, 2009
AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry's wife has confirmed via Twitter that the band's lead singer, Steven Tyler, has left the Boston rockers' longtime handlers, HK Management, and signed a separate deal. "Steven has new management," Billie Perry wrote. "We [and] the [rest of the] band still have the honorable Howard Kaufman/Trudy Green", who have managed AEROSMITH since 1999.
Tyler, 61, is now being represented by Union Entertainment Group, which also manages NICKELBACK, CINDERELLA, LYNCH MOB, HINDER and LYNAM).
AEROSMITH bassist Tom Hamilton is sitting out some dates on the band's current U.S. tour as he recuperates from non-invasive surgery, according to the group's publicist. Filling in for Hamilton is David Hull, who played bass with the group in 2006 when Hamilton was recovering from throat cancer. It was not specified what kind of surgery Hamilton had, or whether it was related to his battle with cancer three years ago. Hamilton recently told The Pulse of Radio that he's been doing well. "Feeling good. Feeling really good, yeah," he said. "I've got to go in and get checked every now and then, but so far, so good. I'm going from six weeks to six weeks, so you know, I'm pretty sure I'm cool, but you never know. You might go in there and they'll say there's some kind of trouble going on."
Hamilton is the third member of AEROSMITH to go down in the month since the band began its tour. First, guitarist Brad Whitford sat out the first few weeks of the trek after having surgery to relieve bleeding in his skull from a car injury. Then Tyler apparently injured his leg onstage on June 29, forcing the group to postpone its last seven shows, including weekend gigs in Florida.
The extent of Tyler's leg injury was revealed by drummer Joey Kramer in an interview with Philadelphia radio station WYSP earlier this week, where he told host Danny Bonaduce, "There's two big muscles in your legs, one's the quadricep, and he ripped that muscle. And it's painful, it hurts; for the first couple of days, he couldn't even stand up or walk or anything."
AEROSMITH resumed the tour this past Wednesday night (July 15) in Atlanta, with Whitford rejoining them.

Based on the Atlanta show, they have apparently removed doing the whole "Toys" album from the set. To give them credit, for what they did, they did it very well. But, I was expecting the "Toys" album, and I was expecting more than a 70 mins. set for my $105. But, the venue was absolutely packed, so I'm sure they got on the bus after the show and laughed all the way to the bank.

Joe comes out on stage by himself and plays/duals with his virtual self from the video game Guitar Hero: Aerosmith that is playing on the big screen over the stage.
And, ZZ Top sounded fantastic. I saw them a year or two ago in Atlanta, and they were very mellow, but the other night they seemed really into it.

you have got to be kidding me? I guess I shouldn't be surprised...they are selling product DURING their shows. I loved this band, one of my alltime favs up to a point, still produced live up to now, but I get so disgusted with the layers of selling out, musically especially. Jaded, Don't wanna miss a thang, all the bubblegum. Even Perm Vaca & Pump seem lame to me now(though I liked them when they came out)....70's ASmith compairs with all the best rock/hardrock ever....playing Guitar Hero, ON STAGE, bogus. People should boo. Let them know that that is not cool....I mean, Joe Perry was like Keith Jr, just bad a$$.

And by the way, ZZ Top ALWAYS sounds great. Truly one of the last great american rock bands!

hey jerkoff. dont be talking down on aerosmith, you want to come on here and spew whatever you feel like the human garbage bag you are when aerosmith was selling out arenas long before you were even alive. i suggest you take your ill mannered attitude and find somewhere else to troll.
as for the guitar hero on stage, i think its pretty cool to give fans a chance to do that. if you dont, you can fuck right off. the guy that happened to win the contest to be able to do that happens to be a friend of mine, a very successful youtube pioneer with an internet tv show that thousands of people watch every week. your only claim to fame, BSlash24, is that maybe 1000 aerosmith fans will see your stupid remarks and maybe 100 of them will countercomment the way i am, shutting you down effectively. long live aerosmith, truly one of the rock greats.

This tour was SOLD on the concept of 'Toys in the Attic' in it's entirety. If you were shocked by the ticket prices that was to convince you this would be something special to see. In a bad ecconomy you charge $100 and up under the guise of them doing 'Toys' all the way through, and it only seems to have actually happened ONCE!
Now they've decided to entirely abandon even trying that in favor of latter-day shit like 'Eat The Rich' and 'Janies Got A Gun' that people have to sit through every year anyway?
Add to this, no Brad Whitford, and now no Tom Hamilton?
Oh, but we get to see Joe Perry playing Guitar hero - THAT makes up for it.
Sorry, don't care if your buddy won or not, how many people would have paid that kind of money to see these guys if they advertised the show honestly:
AEROSMITH - Maybe (or maybe not ) playing Toys in The Attic all the way through (though it's highly unlikely they'll be able to pull it off) with no Brad Whitford or no Tom Hamilton (depending on when you go. BUT - you'll get the 80's/90's cheese like Falling in Love is Hard on the Knees and JOE PERRY PLAYING GUITAR HERO!!!
I think this tour would have sold even worse than it already did.
BTW, I am actually a fan for many years, but enough is enough now. This is not cool.

Maybe I ought to clarify. Joe was playing a real guitar not the game controller. The scenario reminded me of the cuttin' heads dual from the movie Crossroads between Ralph Machio and Steve Vai, if anybody still remembers that? The real Joe Perry with his real guitar came out and played a basic lick. Then, the virtual Joe Perry on the screen mimicked the lick. Then the real Joe Perry with his real guitar played a more complicated lick. Then the virtual Joe Perry on the screen mimicked that lick. This went back and forth for a few "rounds." Then, the real Joe Perry with his real guitar played about a 3 min. rum including some slide and Pete Thownsend-esque windmills. The, when the virtual Joe Perry on the screen tried to mimic it, he messed it up and then there was a virtual explosion and he was gone.
I wouldn't pay $100+ even to see Jimi Hendrix come back from the dead and play guitar hero. How much money do these guys need? They should be ashamed.

Aerosmith has sucked since they got clean and sober. I know that's harsh, and I mean, from a personal perspective of course i'm glad that they are clean, but since 'Permanent Vacation' this band has been a joke, and their records have been shit, especially when stacked up against the amazing 1970s records! And now you get what, maybe 3/5 of the band at a show? Seriously, pull the plug, at least on this tour, they're not healthy enough to do it. And go back and make a great record, and maybe people will care...

guess what, and Shawny should realize this, members of AEROSMITH have been tired of the direction they've gone in. I've read numerous interviews where Brad Whitford laments their EXTREMELY commercial & poppy direction, musically & non musical. They've all wanted to do an album where they return to roots & Steven, and probably the label, put a stop to it....
even watching the making of Pump, I get disgusted. Jon K, the A&R man listens to "Janie's got a gun" & it was more out there. He says something like "it has promise, but needs a catchier bridge"...and they catered to them. Can you image if someone said that to Jimmy Page about, say Kashmir. "hypnotic tune, but where's the catchy chorus, I don't hear a hit"...Aerosmith had the cache to tell them to shove it. Steven wanted the cheesy US Magazine glory though.

good lord. your links are fantastic. I'll look forward to hearing your interviews tonight, see if you're as pompous as you come off out here. 2 bit wanna be. Don't take yourself so seriously, like you've made a huge mark...otherwise, I probably would have respected you, given a shit and thought, "wow, cool". Cuz if you didn't just paint people with a brush, you'd realize some positive people have opinions because they cared about a band......anyone saying "hey thats' my friend that won the guitar hero contest"...I get douche chills just reading that. Like some priviledge donkey with a sweater tied around his neck.....I will check you out. thanks for putting me down & letting me into your world.
You sir, are the "King of Konfrontation!" I like it..
To Aerosmith's credit, they did "Honkin on Bobo" on their own terms. They fought the record company over it, even though the execs said it wouldn't sell. Unfortunately, it didn't do well. But it was the closest thing we got to vintage Aerosmith in years..
I am a lover, not a fighter! but I respectfully post, sometimes "call a band out", but isn't that what this forum is for? Its not like Joey Kramer reads my post, goes into a deep depression & writes a book about it?....hmm....but i don't like being called a Jerkoff by someone that thinks they are something special...if it was some typical metalhead blabbermouther, I would have laughed it off. I am not King Contrary man though. This guy Tempsound is a hypocrite.
I agree, I liked Honkin' on Bobo, the spirit of it. I bought it. It rocked, I'd like some original sounds in that style. Steven did sneak a pop song or 2 on it, but I was hoping they were hearing the fans(older fans) plea to give the Pop band a rest.
I do think most bands 55+ don't bring it either live or studio, especially the singers, they you have to conceed alot to really enjoy the show, the song writing dries up...but Aerosmith, I felt still had the chops, Joe & Steve still had energy live, Steven sounded the most like he did in his heyday of all the old rockers. Look at Plant or Jagger, shells of themselves. (No Tempsound, I'm not a hater, just realistic).....
so I had hopes for ASmith to regain the magic for one last album. Kick the song writers to the curb, write their own blues based rock, some raunch n roll & really do it....if the song writing comes up short, oh well. (I read Geffen allowed them to write on their own for Done w/Mirrors, when it sold low, they said enough)....cheers! I've posted too much out here, getting freakin' riled by a goofy poster.

As far as singers go, the exception is Cheap Trick's Robin Zander. At 50+, after years of smoking and drinking, he is still right on the money. I swear he is a freak of nature. For a band that's been around for 35 years, their material is still pretty solid. More than the others of that age that I've grown up listening to (i.e. Aerosmith, KISS, AC/DC, ZZ Top, etc.).
there's a guy out here pretending to be a bigger AC/DC fan btw, AC/DC#1 is their name! an Imposter!
Zander does sound good, I've seen them 2 times, both in small theaters. he doesnt tax his voice as much as tyler, brian Johnson, etc. but he's solid.
ZZ Top, who I love pre Eliminator could carry on sounding great for years, cuz their brand of blues/rock can be pulled off as older guys....I saw Ac/DC for the first time ever this year, they sounded better than I expected, but angus was most definitely slowing down....and I just sort of realized, that young balls to the wall energy gets you fired up watching live, and translates to the music I think.
MOst Dio fans say he still brings it at a very advanced age. There are exceptions. Van Halen was a sluggier version this last tour, but I think I'm in the minority.

I couldn't agree more - I don't think you said anything wrong in the first place. Aerosmith have been spotty through the years and this tour is just an utter train wreck. It's sad, really. But then this guy gets all bent out of shape because it was HIS friend who won the guitar hero contest. Like you so eloquently put it, that means absolutely, 100%...NOTHING to the fans & people at the show.
Whatever...you get all kinds on here. Here's hoping this band gets it right or bows out before they're too far behind.

Maybe Joe Perry will call you right at home!.....and if he read my post, I said it was disappoint a BAD A$$, one of my alltime guitar heros, is playing Guitar Hero on stage. This Shawn at Tempsoundsolution.com is sitting there in his pleated Dockers, "rockin" to Hootie & the Bluefish, maybe 9 Lives by Asmith if he's really feeling frisky, and thinks he's something cuz he switched from Dunkin' Donuts to Starbucks. And this Friday he'll scurry out to meet his Youtube Pioneer friend at a faux Martini bar, and help tie his sweater just so around his neck before entering said location. They will both jump & highfive cuz Pioneer won the Guitar Hero contest by Aerosmith....
I see, I'm supposed to be behind this contest cuz your friend won, maybe I'll just stop playing guitar & get guitar hero....you all should love Huey Lewis & the News cuz my friend won tix to their show back in 1987. Pure comedy, this Shawn at Tempsound. we should all check out his website tonight. Maybe their a comment forum. We could write a whole skit on douchebags like this....
I love this, if I don't think its cool that Aerosmith give fans a chance to play guitar hero on stage, then "Fuck off". No, I don't think its cool, not even REMOTELY....what about the other 20,000 fans sitting there watching this that don't KNOW this Youtube Pionfuckineer playing guitar hero at a show they paid $200 for seats. They DON"T want to see this bullshit, so fuck off. And Aerosmith, Joe Perry, anyone in the Aerosmith camp, many fans think this is lame, guitar hero on stage is insulting, as was "jamming" with Britney Spears.
I have a new Claim to fame Shawn, calling you out. Maybe calling your Youtube Pioneers Internet show & prank calling, "whoa, what do we have here, Joe Perry's just called in to congratulate me for winning the guitar hero contest, Hi Joe, what a honor to have you aboard our local access cable show, we have THOUSANDS of views, Joe, what's on your mind"....No Shawn, I'm not a Youtube Pioneer. I still have high hopes for Aerosmith. They are finally dusting off combination! I never thought they would, and at this point in their career they don't have to.
Bobo was a great album, a stop-gap maybe, but hopefully a change in direction.
What this looks like to me is some internal squabbling, should they be a pop band or a rock band. Remember that there were also some good tunes in the 90's, and they did have the success that they (or steven at least) craved.
Keep in mind that these guys should all be dead, and it is predictable that they would have health problems at some point.
When everyone is well again, and the battles have been fought and won, it will be interesting to see what this band comes out with, if anything at this point.
