ANTHRAX Singer Too 'Ill' To Tour, Well Enough To 'Twitter'

Although ANTHRAX singer Dan Nelson has yet to publicly comment on his mysterious illness that allegedly forced the band to cancel the first three shows of their latest European tour, he has posted several cryptic messages on his Twitter account in the last couple of days which suggest that there may be more to this story than has thus far been revealed. In addition to deleting his "DanNAnthrax" Twitter profile ( cached Google page) on July 16, he has posted the following messages on his "DanNelson76" account: July 16, 3:47 a.m.: "Funny, I don't feel so lucky...Wonder what everyone is talking about??" July 16, 4:28 a.m.: "is done." July 17, 7:54 p.m.: "loves his family and friends more than ANYTHING." On Friday, July 17, ANTHRAX issued the following statement regarding the European concert cancelations: "The members of ANTHRAX regretfully announce that the first three shows of their European tour scheduled to begin tomorrow, Saturday, July 18th, are canceled. Yesterday, lead singer Dan Nelson unexpectedly informed the band that he was seriously ill and unable to travel or perform at this time. Options for the balance of ANTHRAX's European tour dates are being addressed posthaste. The members of ANTHRAX are devastated by this unfortunate turn of events and ask all of their fans to join them in wishing Dan the speediest of recoveries." Affected dates: July 18 - Sonisphere - Hultsfred, Sweden July 19 - Vega Jr. - Copenhagen, Denmark July 20 - Columbia Club - Berlin, Germany ANTHRAX's new album, "Worship Music", will be released in Europe on October 23 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD, which was mixed at a New Orleans studio by Dave Fortman (a former member of UGLY KID JOE who has also worked with artists such as MUDVAYNE, EVANESCENCE), is the band's first studio effort in six years and marks the recording debut of Nelson. About ANTHRAX's new singer and CD, drummer Charlie Benante previously stated, "This album has been in the making for two and half, maybe three years. After the reunion tour ended, we all went our separate ways. I started to write songs again, but I had no voice for them in mind, I didn't know who would be the singer. So Scott [ Ian, guitar], Frankie [ Bello, bass]and I got together and just started putting some songs together. This was pretty much the way 'Spreading the Disease' was done, too — we wrote those songs without a definite singer in mind. Then, in October of 2007, I was talking to Rob Caggiano [guitar] who said he found this guy in Long Island who he thought would be really good — Dan Nelson. So I did some research, called him up, and flew him out to Chicago." According to Bello, it didn't take much time to realize that they had found their man. " Dan brought in the obligatory 'breath of fresh air,' but it really WAS. He has a killer voice and he's a good guy, and really fits ANTHRAX. The guy sings like nobody I've heard — I'm really proud of what he's done. This is the new ANTHRAX — yes, it does sound different, but it's in the same heavy/melodic vein. I don't compare it, I just see it as, 'I love the challenge of having a new ANTHRAX.'" "While making this album," added Nelson, "I found that if I just tried to approach my vocals from the heart, to not overthink anything, I could bring a fresh, heavier yet still melodic approach to an already brutal style of music. Being the singer of ANTHRAX has already proven to be a great opportunity to play with great musicians." Shortly after the lineup was solidified, Nelson was welcomed into the ANTHRAX fold via a true baptism by fire — opening up a pair of sold out shows for the mighty IRON MAIDEN in California. "The second night, we're backstage," recalls Ian, "[ IRON MAIDEN singer] Bruce Dickinson came over to our dressing room to say hi, and he says to me, 'Your new singer, Dan, is amazing. I was watching you guys from the side of the stage last night — he totally fits you guys, he's perfect. His voice is incredible and strong. I loved it!' And I was like, 'Would you come inside and tell Dan? He'd love to hear it from you.' We walk in the dressing room and I'm like, 'Where's Dan?' And I hear from the bathroom, 'I'm in here, taking a crap!' It was so great — not that we're looking for validation, but when Bruce Dickinson comes up and is congratulating you on your new singer, it's a pretty cool moment." Dan Nelson and Charlie Benante were interviewed by the "Metal Eye" show on Z1 TV when ANTHRAX performed at this year's edition of the biggest Croatian music festival, T-Mobile INmusic festival, on June 25, 2009 at Jarun lake in Zagreb, Croatia. So, the new Lazz Rockit is good? Really good? Thats interesting. I gotta say, I thought Know Your Enemy was just fucking killer; one of the most underrated thrash bands of that era. Most Dangerous Game, Self Destruct, Euroshima, damn, that whole album was just brutal,melodic and well written thrash.
As far as Anthrax, shit, thats a buttstain. Whatever that means....
Oh, and for Metal Church fans...you MUST get WAYNE's "Metal Church! The band is called WAYNE (of course it was fronted by David Wayne himself) and its just wicked Metal. Probably the best "Metal Church" since The Dark. Really heavy, killer guitat sound and all the songs are catchy as fuck.
From what I understand, Vanderhoof got all pissed that David named his solo album "Metal Church" and that was the end of that. Anyway, its on Itunes....you will love it I swear.

Saw Anthrax recently with Nelson, guy was awesome...really hope this doesn`t mean anything. He`s a much better singer than Belladonna who has quite a limited range ( and wtf Ripper??? Sure the guy can hold a scream but he has no emotion in his voice at all...he`d murder Medusa! ).

These boys need to get on the horn and seriously start apologizing and sucking up to John Bush if this kid is indeed out of the band already.
I love the old stuff with Joey and all but seriously, Bush was the man for that band. The time with Joey had passed and they were fucking stupid to come off the momentum they had built with We Have Come For You All, their best album since 1993, and do that stupid reunion tour with Joey and Danny. They fucked their fan base, they fucked their singer and then Joey and Danny fucked them in the end...big surprise.
I was looking forward to this new album with Dan but in reality, it should've always been a new album with Bush.

It was an odd situation, the reunion. Scott did say that without it the band were dead and there`s no doubt it did put them back on the map. But then, from memory, they were selling out decent size venues on the WCFYA tour, the album was well reviewed and there seemed to be something of a buzz around it. If that line up had stayed together there`d probably have been another couple albums by now and they could have worked their way back into the limelight without all this bullshit. I enjoyed the reunion gig I saw but I`d rather have had another couple of albums with Bush.
Either way, I do hope this story turns out to be fuss about nothing, looking forward to the new album and I can`t see them surviving another singer change. I`m pretty sure Bush wouldn`t go back now after the way he was fucked around and I`ll say it again...fuck no to Ripper!

...this is tabloid "journalism" at its worst. This site was the first to introduce this kind of writing to the metal community, and it was a very clever move, as everyone (me included) loves a bit of gossip, but this is a bit too speculative.
There a big difference between flying overseas for high profile shows and posting some line of text on Twitter. For all we know, he could be in bed with a serious disease sending a text message on this cell phone to his Twitter account. To blatantly imply that this would somehow contradict the fact that he is too sick for playing shows is a bit too far-fetched.
If - for example - the guy was caught rehearsing with another band or playing a cover song gig at the local pub, THEN we'd have some basis for speculation, but this? Nah....

Anthrax has a new lead singer man, and if you can't see that this band is incredibly powerful and re-energized, I don't know man, maybe Rock is done for. Maybe your jealous and pissed off because you could never do what he does, who knows, but for fucks sake, you don't like a band, don't listen man, but to berate and abuse a band or any man when he's sick or down, just shame brothers, shame on us all! This is a great band now to many of us. Joey, John, whoever are not in the band anymore. They have other bands man, go see 'em... Better yet, you want to get in a band with John or Joey, call 'em man, this way people can say dumb shit about you as your putting your heart and soul into you art too. One last note, hope this band actually pays no attention to the garbage written by the "can't do's" of the world that need to post here to be seen and recognized and definitely get well soon Dan Nelson! Many more want the new 'Thrax then don't... The shows prove it!

It looks like there is some internal turmoil in the band for what it's worth.
Why wouldn't Dan Nelson and/or Anthrax stand up and APOLOGIZE of having to cancel a few dates AND/OR having to use a replacement singer for the European trek.
Something doesn't add up.
I guess we will soon get to read Ripper Owens doing the tour and replacing Dan Nelson's vocal tracks on "Worship Music".
And remember where you read it first.

Charlie and/or Scott had a better track record with their treatment of singers. Back when Joey joined the band, they constantly said stuff like 'Joey's voice is what separates us, he can actually sing'. Then he left/got fired, and all of a sudden it's 'John gives us the power we needed in a singer' and taking shots at Joey. Then they crapped all over Bush, and Bush handled it with more class than they deserved.
Now maybe this is all no big deal, and hopfully for Dan it isn't, but I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they booted him either.

The band will preserve either with Dan or another singer. The band's press release states: "Yesterday, lead singer Dan Nelson unexpectedly informed the band that he was seriously ill and unable to travel or perform at this time." Looks like he may be sitting out the entire tour, as they are trying to figure out how to carry on the rest of the tour. We don't know the full story, and we probably never will. Scott and Charlie like to keep the band's personal matters to themselves, which they are more than entitiled to.
It really sucks to be put in that position of having to scramble to pick up someone's slack unexpectedly like that. I hate it when it happens to me! Imagine if you were on the eve of a major tour and this happend! I hope Dan isn't dying or anything. But if he is just got a cold or something, he needs to pull his shit together, put aside any differences and sing for ANTHRAX! So many people depend on Dan for a paycheck - the band, the road crew, the guy collecting tix at the venue, etc.
Obviously there's something else going on here.

Judging by that interview footage, this new singer guy is a complete dumbass. Get your act together if you're gonna be a part of an established band, otherwise stay in your garage. Anthrax is way over-rated anyway, Charlie and Scott are both great players, but if i want to hear good thrash I'll just listen to Slayer or old Megadeth.

I`ve just watched the interview and not sure why everyone is hating on Nelson...he`s clearly been drinking and doesn`t seem overtly un-likeable or anything? Just a fairly typical metal guy...too much hating in the metal community for some reason, don`t know if it`s just jealousy or what.
I`d like Anthrax to come out and say something about this now, been 12 hours, they must be aware that BM have posted this stuff.

Yes, we all know flying and performing on a stage is different to sitting at your computer and talking about your life in 160 characters.
Speaking of twitter though, the last message he left, sounds to me like he's not sick at all. 'I care about my friends and family more than ANYTHING' or whatever it was. That sounds like a swipe and I'm guessing the target was Anthrax's big kahunas.
It's fairly simple to me...
If Dan was really sick, his Twitter messages would be remorseful and he'd be reassuring his fan/fans that they'll make it up to them.
The band would also be behind any statements on twitter or otherwise, but their official statement has undertones of hostility, with phrases like, "unexpectedly informed us".
Now, just on that note, how the FUCK else do we find out that somebody is ill?
If this does turn out to be a new chapter of Anthrax drama, no-one could say they didn't see it coming. Scott and Charlie should have rented 'ROCKSTAR' starring Mark Wahlberg, as it demonstrated the pitfalls of hiring a nobody to sing in an internationally renowned act...
I guess we'll see pretty soon, just what the hell is going on...

I used to love Anthrax but I'm glad I don't have to listen to Ian and Charlie talk about how Worship Music is the best CD they've ever recorded, new singer has brought so much to the table, blah, blah, blah...
I have been traumatized by this band. I don't even know what classic Anthrax is anymore.

Dan Nelson is a fucking poser! Listen to his interviews, read his Twitter posts and watch the videos out there......he might have a decent (a little too generic for me) voice but as the frontman of an established band like Anthrax, he has NOTHING to say and NOTHING to offer! It's all fluff poser bullshit. He comes off more like a pro wrestler than the singer a great metal band. Saying things such as: "I like whiskey.....METAL!" is a joke. My personal favorite is one of his Twitter posts : "(I) just owned it in Holland tonight" Hahaha.....talk about egos! Is this guy for real? Who says shit like that? Would you EVER hear John Bush talking like that? What about Anselmo, Mustaine or Hetfield? Of course NOT! I'd rather hit myself in the head with a fucking hammer than listen to a Dan Nelson interview.
As much as I was looking forward to the new Anthrax album, I really hope this guy is out and they get John Bush back immediately. It's they're only shot at moving forward. Dan Nelson is making a mockery of their legacy at this point.

deflepplin...I prefer the Belladonna era Anthrax to the Bush era but I think technically Bush had a much better voice. ALthough Anthrax were at their peak between 85-91 their biggest hit was actually Sound of White Noise ( in the UK anyway, it was the only Anthrax album to hit the top 10 ).

than Belladonna? You really think that? That seems silly considering Bush could never do justice to Joey's stuff. Joey had a really good range and a sense of humor that can't be beat. I like John Bush, but its really a no-brainer. Joey was what made that band interesting.
I saw the almighty Clash of the Titans tour in 90 in Jacksonville FL, and Anthrax kicked the shit outta Slayer and Megadeth. At least on that night. Joey was in top form and singing his ass off. Alice In Chains were pretty good too.

Anthrax was never HUGE...with Joey or without him. They never played arenas like Metallica, Megadeth or Slayer unless they were opening like they did with Maiden headlining. They were always a club/theater sized band in the States despite having a couple gold records and I believe, one platinum one.

Anthrax played arenas in the UK...definately played the NEC and were selling out the Hammy O before Slayer were. I saw Anthrax back in `87 and Slayer in `87 and `88...no-one could touch Slayer back in those days.
I think Anthrax have sold around 10 million albums which is about the same as Slayer...although most of those were a long time ago whereas Slayer have been more consistently popular. Which suggests that Anthrax were the bigger draw in the 80`s.

Be honest before John Bush the band was quite cheesy compared to the other thrash bands of the time... the had the whole Notman thing along with rap/rock combos and songs like "I'm The Man", etc. Not to mention Joey's voice was nothing special compared to countless others at the time. When they got John Bush the band grew some balls and actually sounded serious. They weren't just some skater band anymore but grew into a legit metal band. By firing him they ended their career.

Not gonna lie, the stalker-ish analyzation of Dan's Twitter page is a little weird.
Anthrax haven't made a good album since Sound of White Noise...I've heard Dan sing and he's not too bad for the more Bush style, but if they were really interested in continuing to make good music they would have kept Joey, but that doesn't change Scott Ian's status as quite possibly the coolest person on Earth...so its all good with me.

If you think Anthrax with Joey wasn't serious...I could see where your coming from if your talking about the really early shit but State of Euphoria and Persistance of Time are great heavy metal albums that rank up there with the best of them...and the charm of Anthrax was that they were fun...that was what made them stand out, they were funny dudes who weren't afraid to mix it up and goof around. Were I in a metal band as successful as them, I sure as hell would release some "goofy" side songs and albums...
