ANTHRAX Splits With Singer DAN NELSON; JOHN BUSH To Fill In For U.K.'s SONISPHERE
- July 21, 2009
|
|
ANTHRAX's manager, Izvor Zivkovic of Split Media, has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET: "As announced last week, thrash legends ANTHRAX regretfully cancelled the first three dates on the second leg of their European tour due to new vocalist Dan Nelson's unexpected illness. An additional seven European dates are also cancelled, those scheduled from July 22 to July 30. " ANTHRAX is thrilled to announce that they will play the August 1 Sonisphere festival in Knebworth, England, with their good friend John Bush [ ANTHRAX's singer from 1992 to 2005] joining them for a very special one-off performance. "The members of ANTHRAX have confirmed the departure of vocalist Dan Nelson. In light of this development, ANTHRAX's slot on the U.S. SLIPKNOT dates set for August and September, has also been cancelled. ANTHRAX is already actively considering lead singer candidates, and looks forward to hitting the road before the end of the year." *** UPDATE: According to ANTHRAX's management, the band's new album, "Worship Music", which was previously due in Europe on October 23 via Nuclear Blast Records, will now be "pushed back to a later date." It is not presently clear if Dan Nelson's tracks will be erased from the CD, which was recently mixed at a New Orleans studio by Dave Fortman (a former member of UGLY KID JOE who has also worked with artists such as MUDVAYNE, EVANESCENCE).*** Dan Nelson: ANTHRAX (with John Bush) performing in Chicago in February 2005:

Don't care, they've sucked every since Sound Of White Noise anyway. They went from being thrash legends to writing radio-friendly rock with no inspiration or memorable songs.
They pulled a Metallica - to put it simply. I view this the same as I viewed Jason Newstead leaving...not a big deal.

John Bush is a cool dude for doing this. He is still my fav with anthrax. Sucks the new album was recorded with a one off singer though. Maybe this will speed up the release or post pone it. Be cool if John redid the vocals. Fuck, might as well have Belladonna re do em too considering how spread out this band is now. The bizarrest CD release. 3 CDs, each CD with a different singer. I can only assume that what another poster alluded to that Dan dint like life on the road much but who knows.

So does this mean that they are going to re-record the album with the as yet unfound new singer? The only other option would be to find a Dan Nelson clone or just scrap it all together. Too bad they couldn't dig deeper into their pockets and pay Bush to do the Slipknot tour that would have been one hell of a show! I'd like to see Bush with Anthrax again but not at the risk of losing Armored Saint who in my opinion have always been better than Anthrax - the Belladonna stuff was cartoonish and before that they were just a faster Judas Priest influenced band along the likes of Malice or Savage Grace ie: nothing special. If METALLICA had not parted ways with Johnny Z then there would have been no motivation to make Anthrax as big as they got in the 80s. Let's face it Anthrax has always been money over metal.

Well, that's it for me. I've been a fan since 1986 (when I was old enough to start saving up for tapes). I've purchased all their albums, go out looking for rarities, have purchased T-shits. Now, we have this fantastic new singer fired and an album that's been teased useless. Thanks, guys! Who's going to buy that album with a singer that hardly anyone (compared to your other vocalists) has heard not even in your band anymore? NOT ME! I may very well just hock all my 'thrax CDs. The dream is dead, guys. Thanks for ruining your band.

Canceling with Slipknot will just buy them time to re-record the album with Bush and go out next year.

I saw them with Dan at the Sonisphere in Hockenheim. He really did a great job after what I've heard last year on youtube. Someone taught him how to sing quite well.
What are you people talking about anyway? Neither did Dan rip off Anthrax nor did they fire him (according to their website). He got seriously ill and had to quit... maybe even cancer or something equally bad.

They should stop looking for singers or they will be looking for the rest of their days. Never being able to find one that satisfies them or will but up with their shit. They should respect the fans and stick with John, he could do double duty. If they made the right agreement and didn't get pissy John could return and also stick with Armored Saint. I wonder what they will do about the new album. All they where talking about was Dan and how much the album kicked ass, so much for back with a vengeance!

I'm a huge fan of these guys, and have been since the 80's. I have seen the band live with 3 out of their 4 singers (Neil Turbin is the one I haven't seen), and I can honestly say that John Bush is the greatest man for the job. Having said that, I did see the band with Dan Nelson in London last month, and he was great - the band seemed ready to launch a new era. So it is very sad that the band are now in this position. Despite all the shit that is flying around here, Anthrax are now sitting in a fucked-up situation, with an album ready to be released, and a tour cancelled. It's such a shame...
Still, I'd love to be at Sonisphere for that show though!

Ok so something sketchy definitely went down. Dude is definitely not "sick". You don't bring your old singer back and immediately look for a new singer if the dude you have stuck with for a year and a half all of a sudden gets sick.
You say something like "We are totally bummed that we can't play these shows. Out of respect for Dan, at this time, we will divulge the nature f his illness other than to say that we feel it's not right for us to go out without him. We appreciate everyones support and as soon as Dan is better we will get back out on the road and make up the missed dates. Thanks for your undertanding in this matter as we support Dan as he get better."
Thats what you say if you're singer is actually sick.
On the anthrax website the little animated gif on the right hand banner no longer has Dan on it. They rarely update anything outside of the news section on the site so an executive decision along the lines of "remove that piece of shit from anywhere on the site" musta came down.

If neither one of them, then call it quits.

Glenn Danzig!!
Glen "Elvis on Steroids" Danzig can't even sing his way out of a wet paper bag. His music sucks for the most part, and in no way would he fit in with Anthrax. He needs to just stick with what he does bast, and he does it in his own band.

...my first thoughts go out to Dan Nelson. I truly hope he manages to recover from whatever has temporarily knocked him down. He's a fuckin' killer vocalist & I was looking forward to hearing the new era of Anthrax with Dan representing the Metal.
I hope the band release the album with Dan on vocals and don't get some other guy to re-record them. The band chose Dan for a reason & unless there's any bad-blood going on behind the scenes that we haven't been told, I think out of respect the band should keep Dan's vocals on the album.
The band most likely are keeping quiet about Dan's departure and are allowing him some privacy (to get his head round his current heath status), it's not up to Anthrax to spill the beans and they probably want to leave things until Dan himself is ready to let people know what's going down. I think we should respect that & not start shooting shit over some bullshit internet rumors and filling in blanks that are not there.
The band have some serious touring scheduled and at this stage it would probably cost them a fortune to cancel dates already booked. As much as I don't like John Bush's vocals, I have to salute the guy for putting past differences aside and helping the band out temporarliy during the tour.
I wish Dan, John & Anthrax all the best and hope they all acheive what they need to...

Please come back to anthrax, and pull this beast out of the ditch! Have 2 bands going at once, Armored Saint, and Anthrax! Best of both worlds for me! Belladona sounds (and has always sounded) like a bucket of F-ing Ass! Except for that last album, Bush-era Anthrax is the f-ing best they've ever been.

Well, If Dan is sick, and that's the only reason why is he not in the band anymore, why did you guys hurry up and remove him from your site as bandmember? Really compassionate...
Joey was, at the times, the best fit volcals for Anthrax. In the 80's and early 90's they made their best material with him. Nuff said. Later albums are nowhere near that music quality.
Hope Bush will stay in Armored Saint. He fits there perfectlly. Better than with Anthrax, IMHO.
But money is money after all...

let's hope Dan isn't seriously ill and that it is only a cover for things not working out for whatever reason. You know, sort of how ill handled the cluster that was "Joey & Spitz reunion" and Bush together. Then Bush got dismissed b/c Charlie & Scott were thinking Joey and Spitz were on board, then that blew up in their face and they burnt their bridge with Bush. Would be amazing and show what a class act Bush is if he went back after the treatment he got. Maybe they'll go after Tim Owens next.

Anyone with half a brain can see that Dan Nelson is not sick, it was an excuse the band made up to buy them some time while they tried their best to talk him into not quitting.
Bands do this all of the time. Back before Black Label Society's very first US tour in 1999, a press release was issued saying that the then-drummer Phil Ondich had broken his arm jetskiing - but that was because there was a lawsuit going on with the album cover because it was a ripoff of Johnny Walker Black Label. He didn't break his arm, and in fact, would never be caught dead on a jetski.

Bush would be great, but it's a hard sell: fans win, Anthrax win because they have a great frontman back, but does Bush get anything back after getting shit on? Perhaps the last laugh...

Anthrax...Scott, Charlie, Frankie, and either Spitz or Rob on lead go on tour. For the opening bands they should have DEATHRIDERS, Belladonna, and Armored Saint. That way each singer can come on stage and do a set of the songs they recorded during their tenure with Anthrax. Turbin first, Bush second, and Belladonna being a member of the most popular version of Anthrax closing out the show.
This would be a winner and I would Definitely pay good money for this show.

The only issue with Belladonna coming back is he'll want Spitz and Caggiano gets fucked again.
Everyone always talks about Bush but Caggiano got equally as fucked over.
I loved Spitz back in the day with his Ninja Turtle guitars and all that but he should be banished to shitty metal purgatory for allowing that deuxmonkey crap to surface.
Keep making clocks. Keep Caggiano. He's a 1000 times better guitarist anyway.

Most of you fuckers are acting like Anthrax got rid of Dan Nelson when could very well be -- and appears to be -- that Dan Nelson left Anthrax on his own volition, hence the "I'm sick, I need some time" off option. So when a guy quits on you, especially a new guy not yet fully vested, hell yeah you're going to remove all traces from him and especially if he's leaving you in a lurch (i.e. forced to cancel long-preschedule international shows).
Shit's sad, man. I was looking forward to the reamining Big Five of Thrash to join Testament and Metallica in the resurgence this year. I'll just have to settle with just Slayer and Megadeth this year because Anthrax has become the Van Halen of Thrash.

For people who think he was "silly" or whatever, you are morons, or you must've got into Anthrax late in the game. Shit, listen to each of his albums; most of it is pretty dark stuff, old school thrash.
His voice is unique, which is a major why they got popular to begin with. Bush sounds ok but pretty average to me.

Fuck everyone who is talking shit. Nobody knows what went down with Dan (you weren't there). Also, going back in history nobody knows EXACTLY what happened with John or Joey. No disrespect to either of them guys. I am just saying nobody was there. I have always been a fan and will always be. Everyone says this and that. EVERYONE WHO TALKS SHIT HAS NEVER PROBABLY EVER BEEN IN A BAND BEFORE. Wanting to make your band work and make it last is fucking harder than being married (especially if you are established and that is your job). Everybody has to be on the same page. You think that he is not in the band just because he called in sick to work. IF ANY ONE BELIEVES THAT THAN THEY ARE SO FUCKING STUPID!!!!. I am not talking shit about Dan because I am not there. Should the other 4 guys in ANTHRAX have to stop because of 1 person.NO!!!!!!!!!!! If any of you guys that are talking shit were around in the 80's, then you would know of the big 4. Anthrax was one of them. Now how about if you were part of that movement. You were one of the members of Anthrax at that time. What would you do. You would still be doing metal just like Anthrax (Shit, look how many members Megadeth has gone through. 6- 7 guitar players, 5 drummers, 3 bass players. These are the one's we know about. And yet Dave is still pushing Megadeth). Nobody should have to give up their happiness and stop doing what they love because of a bad situation. Who know's what the future holds. So to everyone who talks shit, FUCK OFF. You don't know nothing about metal. Stay STRONG FELLAS. And by the way John Bush said this 15 Years ago. "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger" He said that way before every mother fucker started saying it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe people are buying this "sick," shit. It's pretty obvious, and has been since the initial announcement, that he either got cold feet or something. I'm not a fan really, but this wasn't Scott Ian dicking him over. Looks like he walked out. And, if he were really ill, the band WOULD have made a statement about and asked for "fans prayers." There's no question about that.

I mean come on, do you think you will ever see a band like Armored Saint open for IRON MAIDEN like Anthrax did and with Dan Nelson even! It's a business decision for Bush and the guys in Saint are probably just now shitting their pants. Bush's bruised ego is finally healed and now Anthrax are ready to rock again.

I just had a feeling something was going on here.
As far as releasing the album with Nelson's vocals on it...they probably shouldnt. it would be kind of weird to have his vocals on it if he isnt even in the band anymore....as this is a new album and not a live album. This isnt the Yngwie Malmsteen band. The vocals are a critical part of the music. as it is with most metal bands. they should just get a new singer and then re-record the album or at least the vocals. If the vocalist is just too different from Nelson then itll probably take some time to re-record it as theyll probably have to arrange things differently, possibly have a different tone, etc. they may even need to scratch alot of entire songs altogether. or they could just go the safe route and get a singer who is similar to him.

It is apparent that there are fans of Joey, fans of John, and a few who liked both for their individual style/skills and whatnot. Personally, I like the stuff with Joey better than the Bush stuff, but I can appreciate what they were doing with Bush.
In comparison, I propose Joey was like Bon Scott era AC/DC. It was with him that they got famous and wrote mad, killer albums. He was a bit of a cad (Like Joey) and had a great sense of humor in his personality and lyrical style. I personally liked Bon era stuff better, but dig Brian's tenure too.
Interestingly, AC/DC started off with some guy named Dave or some shit. This era is similar to Neil Turbin, only Anthrax put out a seminal album with Turbin, whereas this Dave guy never recorded an album with AC/DC.
In any case, the Belladonna era was the best Anthrax. Shit, they are best known for their songs from Disease and Among the Living. Caught in a mosh is their signature tune, which Belladonna sang. They were one of the Big Four with Belladonna. Fuck, Among the Living is their Master Of Puppets.

The REAL reason he is "sick" is because he went top shelf on the band tour bus. They couldn't figure out why it smelled to high hell for several weeks. They changed the waste tank and even considered dumping it over an overpass of Dave Matthews fans on a Chicago boat. Alas, they couldn't find the smell and simply put - who thinks to look in the bowl above the toilet??
This is where Dan Nelson roasted a massive pipe and it pissed the rest of the Anthrax members off so much, they fired him. Again, my grandmothers - bookie's - nephwe's - aunt's - happy ending giving massage therapist just reported it was on the radio.

Armored Saint fans are worried that if John rejoins Anthrax, it will mean they won't get their new Armored Saint record. I don't think it would affect Armored Saint much at all! They already have a new record almost completely in the can, and they already have stated numerous times that they don't plan to do any fullscale touring ANYWAY! So you'd still get your record and maybe some one-off Saint shows like usual, and we'd also get some new kickass John Bush fronted Anthrax.

If he was seriously sick? Like throat cancer or soemthing? Then I dunno. WTF? Just split with the singer? Never heard of this kinda thing before.

Joey is the singer that belongs in Anthrax. Hands down. But I'd accept John.

OK, as a true believer in the Anthrax way, what in the fuck is going on here guys? Of course Bush is better than Belladonna, and he has every right to say "yes or no" if they offer him the position. Total class act on John's behalf, and I would expect nothing less. He is a legend, and he just proved it again.
As far as Dan Nelson goes, What the hell happened and how did it come to the point of having a "come back" album in the can, and nobody driving the bus? I will say that for the first time in a very long time (when John left the band), I feel dissed by this as a fan. I just want some fucking Anthraxian thrash with some sort of singer that sounds tough, not like a helloween/journey hybrid.
Fuck it ....bring back NEIL TURBIN. Start from the start.

By "sick" they must either mean drug problems or some sort of mental problem where he can't be on the road without going nuts or something.
If he was truly sick you would imagine they would stick with him for at least a couple of days...

Why all this talk of "re-record it with Bush"? Scrap it all together and come up with something new with him.
After they all take turns tossing his salad for the bullshit before.

I got into Anthrax in '85. While I do enjoy Bush as a vocalist, I only like one Anthrax album with him singing. But Belladonna? I like every single record he did with Anthrax. Try doing that math and see if you still want Bush back.

On the advice of counsel I have remained silent to the statements issued by Anthrax in recent days and now must address these issues to my loyal fans and others. I want to set the record straight. I was never seriously ill or sick at all, as reported in Anthrax’s 7/17/09 press release. This extremely inflammatory statement hurt me tremendously. This statement misled fans, friends and family members into believing that I was seriously ill when I was not. I was not aware such a statement was being issued and it came as a total shock to me, as I’m sure it did to all of you. It was the other band members’ decision to cancel the tour dates, not mine. I was ready, willing and able to do my job. After issuing the press release the other band members decided, on their own accord, that I had “resigned” from the band. I never resigned from the band. Even in view of this action and stance taken by the band, as late as earlier today I made it clear that I was ready willing and able to continue to fulfill my obligations. After that offer was made the most recent press release was issued which announced my “confirmed” departure from the band. I was not aware of the contents of this release until after it was issued, nor was I aware that Anthrax was canceling the European and Slipknot tours. I regret any disappointment and confusion this situation has caused. I want to thank my loyal fans, family and friends for all their support and their many messages, emails and calls. My counsel has been instructed to take any and all appropriate actions to address this situation.
Dan Nelson

they canned him for reasons other than him doing something really fucking stupid and wrong (i have a hard time believing the reason someone posted in this thread) then this band is the most fucked-up, dysfunctional metal band ever. they would be totally lacking in basic human decency and respect if this is the case.
now, if Dan did indeed shit on Bello, then it is funny and it will be the biggest regret of his life.
i've done some stupid shit drunk, but never did i shit on someone to get kicked out of a legendary band i should be lucky to be in.
that said, i have a really hard time believing the shit story. but if it is a lie, i'm sure the person who made it up is revelling in the rumour mongering.
we'll see if Dan fucked himself out of the best gig of his lifetime or if Scott and company are totally shitty people and can't deal with anyone decently.
cheers.

80 percent of everyone couldn't stand his stage presence.
In interviews, I wondered when someone was gonna smack him and say shut up, pay attention, and be professional.
I think it is a good move. This gives them the chance to find the right guy. I believe it's better to wait and refine, and put out quality then rush a cash grab.
Dan is talented elsewhere but a trainwreck for Anthrax.
Good move.

As I said before, this band NEVER ceases to surprise me. As deth said, this band has sucked balls since TSOWN (I´ve heard all of the albums after that in order to form an opinion) and now Bush is back for one show after all they´ve done to him? Amazing, the last straw would be that he continued.

I wouldn't see them with this new, now departed guy.
I've seen them with Bush and Belladonna. Bush is good, Belladonna is better - if they just paid Joey what he's worth then there wouldn't be a problem.
Hopefully Bush is earning big dollars for this cos he deserves it.
In terms of "Big Four" and embarrassment with lineups etc it goes:
Slayer > Metallica > Megadeth = Anthrax
Megadeth is pretty fkn bad in this area too.

Well, that's the question on everybody's lips, but are we as fans/critics/haters etc really entitled to know that?
I'm 38 and anyone around my age and older, who were listening to and appreciating Anthrax back in the 80s and early 90s, did so without the internet.
Back then, this kind of melodrama, not just within Anthrax, but with any band from that era, simply didn't reach any of the fans, because it was easily kept private. By the time we heard or read about anything like member departures etc, it had been filterd and edited and printed into magazines like Kerrang and Metal Hammer etc.
Personally, I don't think we are ENTITLED to know the truth, but shit always rises to the surface and the truth will reveal itself eventually.

I get tired of hearing that SOWN was the only good thing out of the Bush era. Have any of you clowns ever heard We Have Come for You All? That, IMO, is the strongest work that they have done since SOWN. Belladonna was good for the 80s but be honest with yourself. How dated does Among the Living sound? I couldn't get into the cheesy subject matter of Judge Dredd or Indians. Calling it their "Master of Puppets" is ridiculous. Regardless. I wish these guys the best of luck. I would like to hear Worship Music regardless of who is singing....but I would like to hear Bush.

yes, again, i agree.
im 35, have been into metal since the age of 9(back in 1984) and dont remember stories like this back then, yes i do blame the internet aswell
the thing that pisses me off, is that people judge Dan for his performance on stage, because he is different and trying to make an impact with his new fans..in interviews he is confident, but people knock that and call it arrogant. i dont find his personality in anyway negative for Anthrax, this is the third singer in 5 years, its obvious to see that the problem doesnt lie with Dan, but the Anthrax themselves. i thought his contribution was spot on, he was trying. as for previous singers, John Bush for example..it was one of the most disgusting ways of treating someone in your band who was more than pulling his weight..they made 4 superb albums with him, more so Sound of white noise and WCFYA, to me they were Anthraxs' best albums to date, they evolved to be more diverse, but still be heavy. Anthrax have fucked up big time so many times and are/have lost fans rapidly because of the fiasco created by themselves. as an older Anthrax fan, im gutted to see this happen over the years

Yep, I hear what you're saying. It's disheartening to love a band and to have that love tarnished by bad behaviour.
John Bush is such a nice guy and if what we read is true, then he is certainly the better man in this situation. I'm sure he has his a price though, which isn't a bad thing at all. He SHOULD be asking for a truckload of money, based on what went down a few years ago. Creative tension can always turn into creative intensity and just because they don't all love each other, doesn't mean they can't find a common ground to produce good music. I'd like to think John Bush will stay on. I think it's the only way Anthrax will be able to continue.
As for Dan and all poop jokes aside, I think his lack of career history made him a bad choice from day one. I totally see the drawcard of a 'nobody' getting the chance of a lifetime, but it's not a good idea, when millions of dollars are at stake.
If they wanted to give a 'no name' a chance, they should have got somebody like my friend who is 39, who sings like Bruce Dickenson, who IS a 'no name' but who has worked in the music industry since 1985 singing in metal bands and songwriting for others. A guy like him wouldn't be taking dumps on band members and is finished the trashing hotel room phase of his career as well.
But, Anthrax seem to learn by trial and error and that sucks, because there's a reason that bands have PR teams and why they don't hire somebody's neighbor to come sing for them and with said PR team, we wouldn't all be sitting in harsh judgment here.
I'm behind them in getting rid of Dan. I'm behind John rejoining Anthrax too. But these guys need to lay off the cheeseball press that they do. It makes them look foolish and if the amount of press Scott does determined the band's success, they'd be bigger than the Jonas Brothers.
To me, Anthrax will always be the thrash-band-with-a-heart. Their shows were amazing, their goofball onstage antics were really well received, back in the day and the Joey Belladonna era, for me, contributed to defining who I am today, as it was the music I grew up on.
Anthrax need to dig deep and start remembering what made them great in the first place, because they're not great now. I don't care about coffee or poker tournaments and to me, all those things say to me are that Anthrax don't KNOW what is defining them anymore.
They're turning into Motley Crue on the drama scale though. They so badly need to get off the radar for a little while.
Aaaand...I rest my case. :)
