MACHINE HEAD: Video Footage Of DEMMEL's Collapse At SONISPHERE Finland Available - July 27, 2009
Video footage of MACHINE HEAD guitarist Phil Demmel collapsing on stage on Saturday (July 25) during the band's blistering set at the Sonisphere festival in Pori, Finland can be viewed below. Although Phil had to be helped off stage, he quickly regained consciousness and issued an apology to the fans "for cheating them of their last song." He told Team Sonisphere a short time later, "I feel I short-changed the fans and really want to make it up for them. Thanks for all the concern."

This is not the first time Phil — who suffers from a rare condition called cardiogenic syncope (which means that the heart sometimes fails to pump enough blood to the brain, resulting in the sufferer blacking out) — has collapsed on stage. MACHINE HEAD was forced to cancel the last two shows of its European tour with SLIPKNOT last December after Demmel blacked out during the second-to-last song of the band's set in Sheffield, England.

In a February 2009 interview with HeadbangersBlog.com, MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn stated about Demmel's previous collapses, "It had been happening a bit on this last tour, most dramatically in Paris where, for no apparent reason, at one in the afternoon, he collapsed face first into a wooden table and broke two glass ashtrays on his chest and had to go to the hospital. For the most part, none were public or onstage, so they weren't publicized, but we're very concerned, worried, and a little scared about what's going on. It's confusing. And because it's so random, frankly, it seems dangerous. The doctors he's been seeing, in my opinion, haven't been doing enough, and the advice they've given him is ridiculous. But he seems to be feeling good, and it hasn't happened since then, which is a great sign. He's working to change his habits and to be a little healthier (eating, exercise, stretching) but other than the first few days out, his habits haven't really changed much."

Classy audience.
Also, the band handled it well.

The other guitarist looked pissed when he realized what had happened.

Let's hope that Phil takes care of this, and makes whatever changes needed to live a healthy life.

Sending chills through my spine. (:-[

Looks like this will be a little hard...
I wonder if they'll decide to replace him...
So sad...
He could hurt himself, he had a bal fall in the equipment...
Imagine if he was driving a car...

No offense to Phil and Machine Head but as much as I hate to think about it, I think Phil will be leaving the band sometime in the near future because of his condition. Hopefully, he will find a way to remedy this. More power to this guy!

i don't get it, i don't think the crowd would be upset if they just performed as a 3 piece. even if they just did some punk covers or something? with this happening occasionally it would be professional to have something prepared rather than just calling off the show.

i really hope phil stays with the band, but they need to get a back up plan for when it happens.

wrong. i would stop the show if my band member collapsed again, a life is more important than a fucking concert. the crowd were spot on and understood the reasoning behind the shortened show.

'hey guys, lets carry on performing to please the crowd, rather than tend to our brother/band mate'

I Agree With "martallica" I mean If you Have Guitar , Drums , and Bass... You Can Play!!... Play Anything!!,... Something!.., The Fans Deserve It,...
And I Love! MH, And I Understand the Band Being Tight, as in All or Nothing, But if they only had to play ONE more song... Play a Cover! if You Have Tool... "The Show Must Go On!!"

This guy should quit.

I mean, he's great. He plays is ass off, he really can deliver. Machine head kills on stage with him. But health is the most important thing, and though it would be a huge disappointement, he really has leave and take care of himself. I heard that this kind of fainting can lead to other troubles, way more dangerous for his life.

Plus, everytime he's gonna get on a stage from now on, everybody will be like "well, is he gonna fall down today? who wants to bet?"

good luck phil

Health comes first and there are two options: either the guys make Phil VERY CLEAR that he MUST SERIOUSLY follow the doctors' instructions to really avoid this in the future (or try to do so), or he must leave the band otherwise. The situation is very damn serious, life is at stake here, wtf?

Of course I wish you the best Phil, but you have to be seriously aware of your condition, you are not a kid. This is for yourself as a human being, your life is in danger.

It was the last song of the set and if your bandmate collapsed on stage I'm sure your first thought would be lets go back out there and play some more tunes. You two are idiots... heartless idiots at that.

I guess they should let him collapse and jam some more right even though he could die from this? Yeah it would be so awesome if he was dying backstage while you performed a few cover songs. You guys make me sick.

No way, no how. There's way too much 2-guitar-driven stuff going on, plus Phil covers a lot of Robb's slack during the vocals. Fair enough, the guy's screaming his head off, and anyone who sings and plays knows the playing suffers at least some.

I agree with Send Me All Your Drugs (you can have 'em when I'm done with 'em, btw...;-), if Phil absolutely has to bow out, getting Logan back would be amazing, especially for longtime fans. But I believe there was/is a LOT of bad blood there, so sadly, it probably won't happen.

Besides, Logan has been busying himself as a studio guy these days, so I doubt he'd wanna get back on the touring horse.

"Although Phil had to be helped off stage, he quickly regained consciousness and issued an apology to the fans "for cheating them of their last song." He told Team Sonisphere a short time later, "I feel I short-changed the fans and really want to make it up for them. Thanks for all the concern" "

he quickly regained conciousness, it was their last song..what did you expect them to do?? there was nothing mentioned on how 'quickly regained conciousness' was as in a time scale..anyway, what the fuck does it matter? if your in a band, your bandmates' health come first, after collapsing on stage..the crown reacted superbly, they supported the bands reasons for ending the show a couple of minutes short.

He's Not Dying!, ...It's Happened to him Allot of Times On and Off Stage, He Passes Out and Regains Consciousness Shortly there after, In the Vid You can Clearly see Rob Pissed off when it happens, They Should be like "Not Agaaaaiinn!!" I mean, I'm Not Heartless, but if They are gonna cancel the show Every Time this Happens! They've got a Huge! Problem, They Should Start Thinking about plan B, Which is a shame because I Love Phil but Rob said in an Interview that "He (Phil) Really Hasn't Changed his Habits" well He should start taking care of Himself, or He'll be Out for Sure.

We are ALL dying everyday and like it or not him passing out like this is cutting off oxygen to his brain and blood as well which is causing damage... maybe small but over time it could get worse... he could have strokes, seisures, etc. So yeah could be a bummer down the road if this doesn't get under control.

freaked me out seeing that clip..
because I would wake up 3 minutes after the blackout..
and would have a 2x4 imprint from hitting a bookshelf or a table with my forehead..and then thank my college buds that they took care of me.

As much as it pains me to say it..
Phil might need to consider retirement if he cannot keep his shit together. It is completely obvious that Adam and Rob are frustrated by it all from their latest response.

Fraid' so dude

Admittedly I customized the shit out of the 3 I own. But the neck action has always been ideal for those good old 80's early 90's'eqaue "chainsaw", speed riffs. the string positioning isn't as bouncy / percussion-like. easier to drill into your chords etc

Save the expressive fiddly stuff for the Fender. But do love the Jacksons for their Rhythm riffing

I know there are other great axes out there, but the jackson era was the era I came-up playing through and it's kinda stuck
