SLAYER's KING Says He Is 'Offended' By The 'Silliness' Of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's Live Show

Joe Bosso of MusicRadar.com recently conducted an interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King. During the chat, which is available for streaming and/or download at this location, King discusses the making of the band's new album, "World Painted Blood"; his B.C. Rich signature series guitars; and he even answers some of the readers' questions. When asked about the reports that SLAYER once threw KILLSWITCH ENGAGE off one of its tours, King said "We actually didn't get able to. I tried. Because I'd never seen 'em live, and then I saw them live at some, I don't know, maybe at Kerrang! Awards over in Europe. And I'm just offended by the silliness that goes on on stage [on the part of] the guitar player [ Adam Dutkiewicz]. He puts his foot in his mouth all the time and he says stupid shit, and I just didn't think that side show should be on my stage. So I pulled the plug on the spot, but on that particular Jägermeister tour, we didn't have any product and they did, so Jäger kind of insisted, and I went... They're all friends of mine, so I said, 'OK, I'll deal with it.' [But I] still don't like it." Kerry's comments regarding KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's live show were not the first time a veteran heavy metal musician has slammed the Massachusetts band for their unconventional stage presentation. In the February 2008 issue of Sweden's Close-Up magazine, SOULFLY/ex- SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera described the experience of seeing a KILLSWITCH ENGAGE live show. "I went to see LAMB OF GOD in that States and they were alright, but KILLSWITCH ENGAGE opened and it was the gayest show I've ever seen," he said. "I was like, 'I'm not part of this scene, it's fucking gay.' They were acting like they were U2 and I was like, 'Hmm….' The attitude was so ridiculous. I don't know these guys, they're on my label [ Roadrunner] and all, but it was completely disappointing and gay. Like really lame, such a lame band live, everything about the whole attitude. LAMB OF GOD came out and destroyed them and I don't even like LAMB OF GOD that much, but they were so much better coming after KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. I was like, 'If that's what the scene is about, hey fuck it, it ain't got nothing to do with me.'" SLAYER has just made another track from its upcoming album, "World Painted Blood", available for streaming at Shockhound.com. The limited-edition single, a Kerry King composition, is titled "Hate Worldwide", and is available exclusively as a CD-single at Hot Topic stores beginning today (Tuesday, July 28). "It's a really cool track, and Tom's [ Araya] voice sounds incredible on it," said King. "The last line in the song's chorus is '..spread a little hate worldwide,' and that's what we've been doing for 25 years." "World Painted Blood" was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. The CD was produced by Greg Fidelman, who's spent time in the studio with METALLICA, THE GOSSIP, THE (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, SLIPKNOT and others, and executive-produced by longtime SLAYER colleague Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project. SLAYER — bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, and drummer Dave Lombardo — is currently co-headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival with MARILYN MANSON, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, among others.

A man that wrote a song called Hate Worldwide doesn't like someone. Kerry is an excellent metal guitar player but Adam is a much better musician. There is no question that Killswitch doesn't even come close to Slayer but the guys in Killswitch are definitely more musician guys than just doing what comes naturally types.

All the guys in killswitch are stand up dudes, that are funny as fuck, and really pleasant to be around.
He has fun on stage.. and he should, because his job, is fucking playing guitar every day. If that were my job, I'd be doing the same thing. You don't have to be all serious all the time..
I dunno, but when I started playing music in bands and stuff, I started because it was fun, not because some fat, bald, shitty guitar player was gonna tell me what I could and couldn't do on stage... just my 2 cents..

Mastodon kicks both their asses, live and on record. I can't believe bands like Mastodon and Clutch aren't bigger in terms of the exposure Slayer and KSE get through publications like Blabbermouth and Revolver Magazine. Slayer hasn't been relevent for years and KSE are just another emo screamo duche bands. the singer's alright, but should focus on actually singing more.

... I agree with Kerry King. I'm not a Slayer fan and I often thought of Kerry King as a douche, but he is actually spot on with this one. Saw Killswitch for the first time recently. I was really looking forward to seeing them as I like their music. But I literally was embarassed for the band over how this ass clown Adam was acting on stage. It wasn't cute, it wasn't funny and it takes away from the band in a major way. I'm 38, so perhaps I'm a bit too 'mature' to understand it, i dunno. But what I do know is Adam's antics has turned me off of Killswitch Engage completely.

People should have fun in whatever they do or it's really a waste of your fucking time. Kerry, if you had more fun with your playing, your songs might end up being half as good as Jeff's for once. Jeff IS having fun and so is Adam from KSE. Don't spite them because they are enjoying life and you spend your time grumbling about it. IMO, once you stop having fun with your axe, you should put it down. Nothing pure will come from it otherwise.

Metal is about conforming to an ideal image that is widely accepted as being "metal". Straying from said conformity, in any way (such as Adam D's stage antics), is completely unmetal, and apparently embarresing.
Remember kids - if you really want to be metal - listen to the same music, wear the same clothes, and act just like kerry king. further, if you're in a band, don't do anything goofy or smile on stage. Try to emmulate the way other bands act as much as possible - I can't stress that enough.
Conformity = metal. Blend in with the crowd!

adam d is the shit, and even though their more recent stuff is a little bland in comparison to the first three albums, they have way better songs than the repetitive boring crap slayer's been coming out with. and when killswitch has a not so good song playing, at least adam d makes it entertaining. slayer can't do the same. I agree, though, lamb of god does put on a better live show.

Stop fucking bitching Kerry King. Your metal show is boring no matter how good you are. You all just stand there (or in Tom's case sit on a stool). You are just worried about being upstaged by a more energetic band even if they're not as metal as you, as was the case with Unearth (who I don't even care about) until they dominated the stage opening for you guys. If you want to have nothing to bitch about keep touring with boring, tired acts like Manson because you know that a band like Lamb of God (who you also have a strong distaste for) will feed you your lunch onstage.

It is not about being better or not, it is about ATTITUDE. I saw these guys with Korn one month ago and I couldn't agree with Kerry more. He is literally telling the truth: that guitarist with that goofy thing hanged on his back raises his feet up to his mouth, moving like a stupid fuck, acting like a fucking clown. I couldn't believe my eyes when I was seeing him. Aren't the rest of the guys in the band ashamed? Kerry is a loudmouth, but he tells things as they are, and in this case I agree 100%.

I have always been a killswitch fan, and the only thing that is a bit annoying is adams stage show, it gets more stupid each tour.I remember seeing them when he was injured and couldnt play a couple of years ago, and it was the best time I have seen them. joel doesnt get as much credit as he deserves, while adam if goofing around joel is playing all the riffs.
I dont agree with kerry king though, cos he can talk about putting his foot in his mouth, with the shit that spurts out of his fat mouth, and hs boring guitar solos that all sound the same.

I don't like Killswitch's music at all...never did.
I saw them open for Slayer on the tour he's discussing (either Jager '03 or '04, I believe), and the crowd was fucking wild for them. This was in Massachusetts, where Killswitch is from, so I suppose this could be forgiven.
The sad part is they got a more enthusiastic crowd response than Slayer did, which is NOT forgivable.
At any rate, I've been cursed with seeing them live at least 4 or 5 times as opening acts and on festivals, and I'm mystified by their popularity. They do precisely zilch for me.

i'm bummed that no one has posted about Max Cavalera, Mr. open minded world music musician, calling the KSE guys 'gay' in a negative way like 5x. Gay is an insult Max ya moron, if you didn't like them use a different word. Max is an ass.
That said, Adam is a little over the top, KSE is obviously a band interested in putting on a 'fun' show but i do think Adam's antics distract from the music at this point....

Kerry King's guitar solos bore me. :) I've seen Slayer live a dozen times....basically it's the same show over and over (they play Reign in Blood pepper with a few songs from their other albums). We saw Killswitch Engage recently and the guitarist was wearing a pink tu-tu and the singer was telling jokes...not cliche metal, but actually very entertaining. We had a good time at that show. It was refreshing. Adam D. does not take himself seriously (unlike King who is so serious he is campy), but he is actually a very talented musician and producer. Kerry King should talking shit on his "friends" and turn his eye towards himself. Max C. should be nice too.

well, Adam D is really talented, but I do agree that the hot pants jean shorts and cape thing is a little weird. Yeah, he's enjoying himself, but it looks really put on.
Kerry can say whatever the fuck he wants to. He helped create "Reign In Blood".

It's obvious to EVERY PERSON ON THIS SITE that when Kerry King says "it's fucking gay" that he is not implying "that is homosexual" . . . it's just a word that has become another version of "that fucking sucks" or "that's fucking LAME".
Kerry King is a member of one of my favorite metal bands EVER. He is, whether you like it or not, also the BUSINESS MIND that has kept Slayer relevant and still very present in the metal scene through the years.
If you don't like what he says, why do you people bother READING AND POSTING about HIM??? If you hate him so much, ignore him and he'll go away.
Problem is, he's not going ANYWHERE until he wants to so you can fuck off. I can't WAIT for World Painted Blood . . . the single they've got streaming over the net yesterday was great . . . it's one of those weird things where it's so over-the-top negative that it actually makes me laugh. I love it.

According to Kerry, all music should express no fun on stage? Give me a break. Killswitch's live show is great and amusing, where's the problem? Should every note of music be somber faces and seriousness? What about fun?
I forgot, Kerry King hasn't smiled since 1976. I like Slayer a lot but because there's a metal band that doesn't perform like they just attended an infant's funeral doesn't make that band wrong or "silly."
Honestly, what's sillier, guys having fun on stage playing music they love or a grown man with a head tattoo and no ability to have fun?

if you dont like them, then move on. See another band or dont see em again. Just cause you dont like em, dont mean others wont. Grow up

KSE first album was good, but everything after wasn't too hot. Howard Jones is a good singer but seems like less feeling in what is going on now. As someone above stated, they are more just musical and seeming less feeling in what they play.
I can see how Kerry can find the stage show goofy.

Well yeah Killswitch have fun onstage. Actually i like both bands but lately i got MUCH more into bands that have fun on stage, bands that SHOW that they have fun and interact with the crowd.
I hope you never see a Danko Jones show, Kerry. You'll die of a heart attack when you hear him talking in between songs.
Even some Black Metal bands are more fun and much more enjoyable than Slayer. Slayer shows have become so goddamn predictable that i don't even go and watch them when they are playing on festivals that i attend

I don't blame Kerry - I was at that Kerrang awards show (it was Hackney, London - Dime was there too, same year he died I think so prob about 2007...) that Kerry was at and KSE played live. I'd never seen them live before either, just heard and not liked their stuff. I remember at the time thinking that they absolutely were complete shit, so generic, and really appeared to be taking the piss out of metal completely. Akercocke played at same show and the contrast between the two bands couldn't have been greater.
If I was KK I wouldn't wanna share the stage with a comedy metal act either, KSE belong on a tour with The Darkness from what I could tell when I saw them.
Think about it, bands like Faith No More fuck around all the time on stage, but it goes with the music - KSE's music just doesn't sound like it would be played by a comedy guitarist, the musics all angry and serious. And then the whole thing just smacks of fakeness and insincerity, regardless if that's the case or not.

is that why you were at one of their first shows with Howard upstairs at the Worcester Palladium just standing on the stairs and watching the band play. The next day Killswitch just happened to be out on tour with Slayer, imagine that. In fact, I went to the show with KsE and you and Tom both stated from the stage how happy you were to be on tour with Killswitch. Oh and interviews from that time period have you stating that you enjoy being on tour with the bands like Killswitch because you don't listen to a lot of the newer metal and you felt KsE was one of the few young bands worth taking out?
And to all the shit talkers, I've met Adam D multiple times and have seen KsE at least 7 times since 2002 and Adam is always awesome live and always a great guy to shoot the shit with. He's always willing to sign something and he always has fun. Really sounds like a douche to me.

KSE doesn't belong on a stage with Slayer because they're a completely different animal. It's like having Weird Al open up for Nirvana or Michael Jackson. KSE is for kids who would rather play Guitar Hero than pick up a real guitar. Kids who feel more comfortable laughing at a legend like Dio than admitting that they connect with his music.

1. KSE have as much to do with "rappers" as your brain with thinking. KSEs attitude has nothing to do with Eminems. But Max "Jumpdafuckup" Cavaleras attitude is just like that.
2. You consider yourself a defender of real Metal, then why do you go to fuckin Wacken? There's a lot of other festivals in Germany that are much more true in a positive way. Wacken sold out so badly, it's a fucking shame
3. You hate KSE and you like In Flames? In Flames is like the definition of a band that got really really weak and turned away from their roots to become what you call "the evolution of metal". Face it: In Flames nowadays are in fact very close to KSE, just not as good live.

Adam D is a stupid fuck for sure, but that doesn't mean Kerry "I've got a god complex" King has to pretend that he's the new sheriff in the town of Metal. Slayer, like killswitch is, or at least should be called a "gateway band" Meaning a band kids listen to between getting into Metal that doesn't blow assholes and whatever bullshit they listen to before that. The problems I have observed are that Killswitch has whored themselves, both musically and financially, to keep relevant to scene kids and thus have the money and popularity to stay around filling youth's ears with sub-par metalcore. As for slayer, apparently there are enough Budweiser Swilling rednecks out there with enough extra change they didn't spend on Meth, Swastika tattoos, and child support to keep them in business.
I appreciate the contribution of both bands to my own musical preferences, but beyond that both bands are, in my humble opinion, overrated and undertalented.

Jesus, it's hard being a Slayer fan sometimes. Kerry is a fantastic guitarist but that's where it ends. He should not be allowed to do anything except play guitar.
In truth, I don't really like KE, but Max' comments proved to me what I've known for years: He is a fucking douchebag. Everything is 'gay' and 'lame', coming from a guy who has shot to fame by learning how to play three chords, and rhyme 'eyes' with 'lies' and 'mind' with 'blind'. Hardly an achievment worth crowing about. And the whole 'I love God' thing when he was in his Pineapple-Head phase - What a fuckhead. Soulfly sucks, and Sepultura are better without him.

No disrespect towards Slayer and their accomplishments, but they are about as boring as you can get on stage. They are a bunch of statues and doesn't do shit to get the crown into it. Does Tom even speak between the songs? I've seen 'em three times and I remember everyone being really boring, even though I love some of their albums.
Killswitch Engage isn't really my cup of tea music wise, but I think they are an very entertaining live band. Adam D is awesome in my opinion. He's funny as shit, and so fucking talented. When I go see a show I want to be entertained, I want to get pumped up and I want to have a good time. Killswitch is really good at getting their audience pumped up as shit. They do whatever it takes to get the crowd crazy. Slayer on the other hand, they just play their songs and solos and doesn't even move around. Kerry King can go suck it.

2-Yes In Flames last couple of albums sucks compare to the older stuff

If Kerry King has an opinion on someone, he should go up and say it. Sissies hide behind the media. Keep it out of this.
I've seen worse than Adam D. I mean, Mikael Akerfeldt is the Adam D of the progressive world and you don't see many people going all up in arms on what he says/does. I'm not trying to critique anyone on the music styles, for that's not the way to go about this one. From what I see, it's just that King is being a sissy and ratting out problems to the media.
