ANVIL Opens For AC/DC At Gillette Stadium; Video Footage, Photos Available - July 29, 2009
Canadian heavy metal legends ANVIL played their first show as the support band for Anglo-Australian rockers AC/DC last night (Tuesday, July 28) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Fan-filmed video footage of ANVIL's performance can be viewed below (courtesy of "imojoimojo"). Photos by Tom Couture are available at this location.

ANVIL will also open for AC/DC on July 31 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and August 6 at Magnetic Hill in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

ANVIL guitarist/vocalist Steve "Lips" Kudlow recently told National Post about playing with AC/DC, "Doing the gig is the easy part, getting the gig is what's tough. I last saw AC/DC with my 11-year-old at the Air Canada Centre. Now, he'll get to see me open for the band in the States. It's bombastic, man. Really, really incredible stuff."

ANVIL landed the gigs based on the overwhelming response to and incredible buzz created by the critically acclaimed documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil".

"What it came down to is the fact that AC/DC will benefit because they're the guys who extended a hand to help ANVIL out," Lips said. "I don't know if they saw the movie or not. I just know a decision was made by Angus [Young, AC/DC's guitarist] and he wanted see ANVIL triumph and succeed."

"All this stuff that's happening to us now could never have happened if we didn’t play for more than thirty years," Lips added. "I got to tell you, man, it couldn't happen at a better time in our lives. It bought me a retirement fund, if nothing else."

ANVIL, considered a major influence for a generation of hard rockers including METALLICA, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, and GUNS N' ROSES, was the subject of a critically acclaimed, must-see rock-doc, "Anvil! The Story of Anvil", directed by Sacha Gervasi. And in the process, the film has made the group (led by Kudlow and Reiner — both founding members) a household name. But the group's story will certainly not end with the film.

On September 15, "This is Thirteen" will finally see proper national distribution on CD and vinyl via VH1 Classic Records. The CD will feature the newly recorded, never-before released bonus track "Thumb Hang". The collectible double vinyl LP boasts newly re-recorded versions of ANVIL classics "Metal on Metal" and "666". The album, originally recorded in 2007 and produced by Chris Tsangarides (JUDAS PRIEST, THIN LIZZY), was primarily available directly from the band via their web site and at their concerts.

According to RollingStone.com, ANVIL is currently re-recording several other classics with producer Chris Tsangarides, which will be included on a forthcoming "Anvil!" soundtrack. "What happened was the label that owns the old material wanted so much money to license the songs, that it became ridiculous," explained Lips. "In fact, it was far cheaper to go in and re-record in the same studio [Phase One], with the same producer, and re-do the songs. The new version of 'Forged in Fire' is amazing — I think the original version was played too fast. Remarkably, we're getting a second chance to record the songs."

Other freshly re-recorded tunes are "Winged Assassins", "March Of The Crabs", and "School Love". "It's going to be a true 'Best of Anvil', in a way," added Reiner.

I've been an Anvil fan since Metal on Metal came out. I saw them at the Rockpile East (Doublerinks arena on Barton Street) in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1984 or possibly 1985.
This is great that they're finally being recognized. However, I'm leery of bands that try to 're-record' their own songs. Just check out Exodus's new 'Bonded by Blood'. The new one doesn't even compare. It's missing the raw punch and the youthful sponteneity of the original. It's too bad the dicks at Attic records decided to take the old songs hostage for huge cash.

"The video game says 'play me'
Face it on a level
but it takes you every time
on a one on one"

WTF ?
- what language is this ?

And, oh yeah ANVIL needs a second guitarist. their sound and stage presence is currently weak

Did you see the reaction they got? Embarrassing. All the calling-in-favors that this Gervasi producer does sure won't help this band out. The live show is horrible and they do need that second guitar player. Not sure where Reiner thinks their songs could get airplay on radio?! No chance. I would go back to the original lineup and write a good cd.

The crowd did indeed notice them, and to me they sounded pretty good. They were very thrilled and honored to be playing in a stadium that size, and they played with a lot of enthusiasm.

someone should tell these guys to hire a guitar player, that way lips can play rhythm and sing without having to do it all.

Crowd reaction seemed underwhelming in the video. Anvil need to polish their sound and get another guitarist ASAP! What may of worked in the bars doesn't transfer well to big stadiums.

Just because a band is playing metal and is around forever does not qualify them to something owed. IF THIS BAND had been playing good metal since the first 3 records (back in the early 80s) then fine, but even Reiner just said they hadn't played anything "radio" ish for 25 years.

There are alot more deserving bands to respect more and support but I guess being a Spinal Tap wannabe is more important than making good music in the last 25 years. Then again, obviously they can't so the movie thing was their only hope at anything music related.

Attic records no longer exists. They went under and Unidisc bought everything. They are the ones holding the original recordings hostage.

Band sounded good. The whole night made me proud to be a rock/metal fan. To see a band like Anvil who has struggled for so many years lifted up to play in front of thousands and thousands of people was awesome. And to see a band like AC/DC play with such enthusiasm after so many years in the business was also amazing.

All in all, the whole thing was pretty breathtaking. Had never been to a stadium show before. What a night.

and Anvil were great. It was coool to see and hear them playin in fornt of so many people. They were not ignored by the crowd. I got to talk with Lips and Robb several times throughout the day backstage before and after the show and they were so excited to be playing such a huge venue. They were bursting with excitement and their excitement and enthusiasm was hard to miss.

Robb and I spoke for easily 20 minutes about drums and drumming, music and how what music offers to people is such a special thing. "It aint about the money" as Robb told me.

I personally heard several members of AC/DC's road crew go up to each member of Anvil and their crew and extend an offer to help and/or "anything you need, just let us know. We're here to help you" That was a class act on their part.

Im glad I got to see the show and I personally was very happy and excited to see Anvil on this show. I wish them all the best.

Also, I know they are not a heavy metal band, but the other opening act- The Answer are really pretty good. I see why they are on the whole tour with AC/DC.

Who Made Who is one of my AC/DC faves. I think those lyrics pertain to the movie Maximum Overdrive, but I could be wrong. Don't rip on Anvil that much. Any of us would open for AC/DC in a heartbeat.

Seriously...you can't figure out what the lyrics are talking about?! Jeezus....they quite simply infer that the man made machine is now smarter than the man, hence the back talk to the machine...Who Made Who? Aint nobody told you?
