ANTHRAX Guitarist Denies He Told MUSTAINE METALLICA Planned To Fire ULRICH

According to a short message that was just posted on ANTHRAX's official Twitter account, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's claim that ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian told Dave that METALLICA was planning on firing drummer Lars Ulrich in 1986 is "not true." The post adds, "Little does anyone know but Lars actually owns the [ METALLICA] name. Good luck ever kicking him out." In a brand new interview with RollingStone.com, Mustaine — who was a member of METALLICA for less than two years in 1981-1983 — was asked if, as far as he knows, it is true that on the last METALLICA tour Cliff Burton was on before he died, the band was planning on firing Lars Ulrich at the tour's end. "That's what Scott [ Ian] told me," Dave replied. "He said that when METALLICA got home, that James [ Hetfield], Cliff [ Burton] and Kirk [ Hammett] were going to fire Lars." In April 1983, after METALLICA had driven to New York to record their debut album, Mustaine was officially fired from the group — allegedly because of his heavy drinking and personality clashes with founding members Hetfield and Ulrich. The band packed up Mustaine's gear, drove him to a Greyhound bus station in Rochester, New York and put him on a bus bound for Los Angeles. From ANTHRAX's official Twitter account:

I'm sure Scott is just kissing Metallica's ass in the vain hope that Anthrax will someday be booked as an opener for them.

Some savvy promoter out there could make enough money to retire if he could organize ONE concert, muchless an entire tour, that featured the Big 5 thrasbands of the 80's...Metallica/Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax/Testament, all on one stage. Any money he made (and it would be tons) would be well earned considering the logistics of fitting so many egos, feuds, and whatnot into one show, but the fans would eat it up.
To make it fair to all bands...give them all the same set list lengths (say, 1.5 hours or so). If it could be logistically done, said promoter would be rolling in dough, as would the bands involved.

I don't blame Scott for answering so quickly! That was a dumb question for anyone from RS to ask. The guy does still have some sort of reputation to keep. I'm not discrediting anyone who has played with them, but Lars and James pretty much have been the driving force behind Metallica. Getting rid of Lars may have been a fleeting thought, but that's it.

Dave is NOT the own who has constantly brought Metallica up in interviews over the past few years. It's almost always the interviewer, or some "fan" who submits a question related to it.
And why? Just to get Dave riled up in the hope that he talks some shit and gives the interviewer a memorable quote that he can use to get everyone to read his article.

Cliff Burton had a lot of control, if he wanted Lars gone it could have happened. In 1986 Metallica wasn't that big a name nor was Lars super rich like he is now so they could have booted him out. Even if he owned the name maybe the other guys were going to quit, I don't know that's just conjecture on my part.

I thought he said he was done talking shit around the time of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. I looked up the trademark information and it says that the name is owned by Lars, James and Kirk (surprisingly). So Scott is talking out of his ass there. And back in 1986, they weren't nearly as big as they are now. It wouldn't be too far out of an idea that they'd be capable of firing Lars.

I realize that Scott has a few problems, like being an asshole an all that, but I really think that he is incredibly talented in his own right. Back in the day (the 80's is now officially "the day") we were starved for any information at all on our favorite bands...having to rely on Rip magazine and...oh yeah, Shit Parader, Circus, Metal Mania...fuck, we were lucky that towards the end we had a monthly magazine called Thrash Metal! It should not come as a surprise that Mustaine is lying, he has done that several times regarding his own band members and their contributions, also about "the hills ran red" (song which he claimed turned out to be Lepper Messiah, but was in fact never used on a Metallica record) in regards to song writing credits.

1. Mustaine was ASKED and he answered. He didn't bring it up. Journalist use him for controversial for quotes – I just wish he wouldn't bite but that's Dave. Almost (too) honest.

In the published (brief) statement, Ian does not deny that he told this story to Dave Mustaine. He just says that the story is not true. So Ian probably did tell Mustaine this story, and Mustaine thought that it was true, but Ian was just pulling his pants (or simply lying; just ask any of the past Anthrax singers about Ian's tendency to spin the truth).

Anthrax will never tour with Metallica anyway so at least have some self respect and stop sucking everybody off. Maybe you should worry about getting another singer for your band Scott Van Anthrax. I don't know how many people who post here were actually around when the Big 4 came on the scene, but talking shit about each other was common place and encouraged. It was competition and funny to all of them. It is never really taken very seriously by any of these guys. Dave knew what he was doing and was probably just having a little fun with Scott and Lars. They are all friends. People take this shit way too personal.

It takes a certain kind of immature man child to sit in front of a camera and in an interview discuss conversations he had with the rest of the band 26+ yrs ago with respect to firing Lars- true or not as if that's relevant in the context of what's happening now and then to throw the jab at Kirk about nailing his girlfriend. So petty,unnecessary and weak. If you take all the interview clips in print and on video along with the SKOM movie clip you can only perceive Dave as a guy who feels left out in the cold it's all so stupid because he's very successful and perhaps more so when it's all said and done because he has autonomy over Megadeth and if you look at it purely by the numbers Metallica has 100M+ in sales and Megadeth has 20M+ in sales. Sure Dave's had to make that money with a few more records than Metallica has but once it all trickles down Dave has earned his fair share of the pie ( roughly 20+% )

.....that is partially true. However, he could do as any reasonable adult would do, and just say "no comment" and move on. He seems to RELISH when these questions are brought up. He acts all Steven Adler-ish about it. If he didn't want to answer, he wouldn't go on and on and on at length in these interviews about the Metallica topic. If it bothered him so much, he'd have a clause in any interview agreement that says "no Metallica questions".
Fact: talking about Metallica in interviews gets him more mainstream press than talking about his own band. How sad.

Dave still has passion for his music, his vocals and still great, and his band is top notch. I can't say that for James' vox, Kirk's lead playing these days, Lars' drumming, or the song writing. I liked Death Magnetic but they are far off from their better days as techical players and songwriters. Dave is still at the top of his game in those respects. I could care less about what the man says.

METALLICA was a name that Ron Quintana came up with for his zine before he used Metal Mania, at Lars' suggestion. Lars took the name METALLICA for himself. Having delt with Mr. Quintana I'm sure he never made a fuss about it when it happened, just the opposite he was glad that Lars was using the name because Ron did everything for METAL in the 80s (okay for metal, chicks and the dog). Ron has always been a very generous, down to earth, NICE guy. If he had extra tickets to a show or passes or a spot on the list and for some reason a friend or even a casual aquaintance needed to get in he would make sure you were in the door. When he would have his "stoop" sales on Haight Street (actually around the corner from Haight) if you wanted a cd or record he'd always give you a great deal or just give you the music for free - I can't count the times I heard him use the phrase "you NEED this" while handing out a rare 45 or disc. Did Lars EVER pay Ron for the name? Probably not and definately not as much as Lars has made from it. Has Ron ever complained publicly? No, he has too much class. Hail Ron!

As far as throwing Lars out that would have been funny. I'm sure LArs woould have been able to hook up with people who had been thrown out of Laaz Rockit or some of the "also rans" in the Bay Area and make a nice little project for himself. I would have loved to have seen BOTH Lars and Kirk go to be replaced with Jim Martin and Mike Bordin of couse this could have only happened in '85 or early '86. Hetfield, Burton, Martin and Bordin, that even SOUNDS heavy when you say it. Of couse it didn't happen and Lars did not get thrown out so we can all put away are "what if pipes".

It’s old news that Ulrich owns the Metallica name. He started the band in 81, for crying out loud. He had a spot on Metal Massacre I BEFORE he had a full band and a song. The guy’s determination, business savvy and work ethic are LEGENDARY. Yeah, firing Lars to continue as Metallica would have been a fruitless endeavor.
As for the Mustaine/Ian shit…This shit would be interesting if it was relevant to TODAY. It’s fucking 26 YEARS AGO. Blabbermouth, let it go!

To the moron who said Testament weren’t that big or influential, please stop the revisionist history that you obviously know nothing about (you must get all your news and historical facts from the Blabbermouth message boards or one of those European metal mags).
If you expand the Big Four to the Big Five, you absolutely do put Testatment as the 5th because they were the fifth biggest seller out of those 5 (and in recent history has probably surpassed at least Anthrax if not Slayer as well). Exodus and Overkill, while very integral and older bands by about 5 years, they NEVER reached the sales heights of any of the Big 5 overall. Yes, they are part of the pantheon of Thrash Pioneers, but when the term “Big” is used, it is in terms of overall sales (i.e. awareness by the general public) and influence (i.e. sited influence by peer and upcomingbands). Testament were in some ways the most technical of those Big Five, and their influence to metal overall cannot be ignored. I’ve heard more bands that sound closer to Testament than those who sound like Overkill or Exodus, and I’ve been listening to thrash since 1987.

I can't see them getting rid of Lars at all in those days, he was still good! He was the only one that could give an interview in the early days without sounding like a 7th grade kid. James was way too shy, Cliff didn't give a fuck, Kirk, need I say more, so really, Lars? Totally doubt it, only Hetfield and Hammitt can answer this one.

to work at a radio station and Lars called trying to license the name Maytallica to the stations to use in May promos (like the Rocktober gimmick that everyone uses). We laughed at him, especially when he thought it was a good catalyst to St. Anger airtime.
Lars made himself out to be known as more of a cartoon than a musician anymore. Dave is just a tool and needs to move on. Metallica wouldn't have lasted more than 2 albums with Dave in the band. Too many egos in one band will kill it, they needed to crop off the excess bullshit. The firing of Dave helped create 2 great 80's thrash bands instead of one flash in the pan.
I have no idea who is telling it how it is here. Dave contradicts himself all the time and once I heard someone ask Scott what he thought of early Metallica albums compared to the Load era and he said the old stuff was "before his time". Maybe that was just Mancow lying again about his guest audience. Now Mancow, I know he is a lying piece of crap.
