Paul Marshall, afternoon radio personality and program director for 98.9 The Rock in Kansas City, Missouri, conducted an interview with Zakk Wylde ( BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, OZZY OSBOURNE) earlier this week. An excerpt from the chat follows below. Q: I need a statement from you. What is going on with all the rumors and all the crap with the Boss [referring to Ozzy — Ed.]. Zakk: "I really have no idea. 'Cause I call up and go, 'What's going on here?' I was just like, 'That ain't cool, dude.' I go, 'If you're gonna can my ass, say it to my face. Don't be doing this shit behind my back; that ain't cool.'" Q: So there was a tense moment there with you and the Boss? Zakk: "I have no idea. I guess we're supposed to hook up in August and do this goddamn show [at the BlizzCon convention in Anaheim, California]." Q: The last time they tried this was "Down The Earth", and that record [wasn't that great], so I'm guessing if Zakk's not involved, it's not a good Ozzy record. Zakk: "I have no idea. I'm just like... You could play with anybody you want. Put it this way... It's like my wife... You can be with any guy you wanna be with. But you know what?! If you're gonna be banging a guy in our bed, at least let me watch so I can enjoy it. Let me in on the skinny... what's going on here. That's just not... I don't give a [bleep] what anyone says, it ain't [bleep]ing cool. It's like, hey, you know what?! You're just [bleep]ing on me in a back [bleep]ing alley right now and [I'll] rip your [bleep]ing head off if you're gonna pull this shit. We'll [bleep]ing find out." Ozzy told Classic Rock magazine in a new interview (stream audio in YouTube clip below) that he's on the lookout for a new guitar player, apparently to replace Wylde. Ozzy appeared late last month as a guest at Slash's headlining concert in Norway, where rumors indicated that he was lining up ROB ZOMBIE guitarist John 5 to take Wylde's spot. Ozzy didn't deny the rumors, saying, "Well, I'm getting a new guitar player as we speak, and everyone has been saying to me for a long time, 'Get Johnny 5!' And I tried him at one time and I didn't really give him a chance. We'll see, I don't know." As for why he wanted to break away from Wylde, who has played with Ozzy on and off since 1988, Ozzy said, "I haven't fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk's got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like ( Wylde's band) BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. I just felt like I wanted a change, y'know?" Ozzy also indicated that he was auditioning a guitarist from Greece, but declined to give further details. The former BLACK SABBATH singer has been working on his latest solo album at his home studio in Los Angeles, He said that Wylde had recorded material for the project, but added, "I don't know if I want to use it." Wylde seemed unaware that he might be out of a job, posting on his Twitter account, "This is news to me." Wylde joined Ozzy in 1988 on his "No Rest For The Wicked" album, replacing Jake E. Lee. He has played on every solo Ozzy album since, although he was replaced in the touring band from 1995 to 2001 by Joe Holmes. i think that we are getting these interview comments as stories and i am not sure how accurate the timeline is. One said, a week ago, end of last month and a couple weeks ago.... seems like someone is trying to make something out of nothing and if that's the case....... this is bullshit.
If Ozzy wants a new guitarist..... do it. Zakk has options.
I don't blame Zakk one bit for being pissed. But the swearing is old.
I know someone is going to mention something about Zakk and his pinch harmonics...... that's his style, much like Eddie VanHalen fingertaps in every song.

I am the biggest Sabbath fan you'll find and I realize the importance of Ozzy's part in Heavy Metal. But the guy has turned into a backstabbing clown. First he allowed his wife to trash Iron Maiden in a childish way with eggs! She is a mature adult? Well she was under pressure, after all everyone was there for Maiden and not her husband. Then he sues the creator of Heavy Metal and all around nice guy Mr Iommi. And whether you like Zakk or not, after 20 or so years you owe the man honesty and direct communication.
You don't see many legends today acting like Ozzy, for example, Iommi, Butler & Dio, Brian May, Steve Harris, Brian Johnson, Angus, Roger Glover, Rob Halford, all classy individuals with respect and integrity. If Ozzy gets John 5 as rumored for his new guitarist, expect to hear some nu/industrial/Manson sounding garbage. Of course we can still listen to our Sabbath/Priest/Maiden which is really the holy trinity of Heavy Metal don't you think? Who needs Ozzy, who in all honesty is just a plastic dummy sitting on Sharon's lap while she moves his mouth to form her words!

I'm NOT a Zakk fan, and I think an above poster makes a good point when he notes that maybe Ozzy is really desparetly trying to stay sober this time and having a drunk like Zakk around won't help, but still, TELL him that. The man has given you 20 years or so of his life (and of course benefitted quite nicely, but still!), if you are changing guitarists, just tell him. Initially is sounded like Zakk wasn't all that hurt, just like 'if he wants to play with someone else' great. But the longer it drags on, the more Zakk has a point! Call the dude Ozzy! Or better yet, retire. Your legacy is intact, you can't cut it live or in the studio anymore, just walk away and enjoy your millions!!

Ozzy is the biggest dick in metal - he sounds improbably enough, like the sort of child Mustaine, Ulrich, Blackie Lawless and Axl Rose would have. I've a feeling his new revenue stream is giving lessons to bands like Anthrax in being consummate assholes.
I mean check out his track record - wiping out Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake's parts on his first two albums - mutilating them in the process, suing Iommi, insulting a much better far more relevant band (Iron Maiden)...the list goes on.
And before the 'it's not Ozzy, it's Sharon!' brigade starts, shut the fuck up already. None of this can happen without Ozzy's active approval. Irrespective of how good or bad you think Zakk is, he's played a HUGE role in Ozzy's solo career, written some of the best songs and until recently never said a word against him. He deserves a LOT more than this 'dismissal by interview to Classic Rock' bullshit that's been pulled on him.
Also was i the only one who thought 'I Don't Wanna Stop' from Black Rain sounded like it was being sung by Bender from Futurama?

I'm sure Zakk was a nice, sober boy when he joined Ozzy's band. He has given Ozzy his youth, and has been a loyal contributor for a long time. Perhaps Ozzy may be partly/mostly responsible for Zakk's boozing.
Ozzy owes it to Zakk to be straight-up with him. Taking responsibility for yourself and your behaviour is one of the steps to continued sobriety!

Zakk really needs to clean up his act. I'd love to know what happened to the quality musician known as Zakk Wylde. Book of Shadows was a great solo album, but now its just the usual chug, pinch harmonic deal everytime.
The only thing more obnoxious than his playing lately is his annoying shtick as the drunken biker. It's a shame because I used to have a lot of respect for him.

Ozzy is done. Black Rain stunk. His covers album stunk. Every album since NMT has stunk. Zakk, on the other hand, has created 2 masterpieces in my opinion, Book Of Shadows and Hangover Music Vol VI. Yes, they are both all slow songs, but they're awesome albums front to back. Blessed Hellride, 1919, Mafia, all pretty good as well. His only stinker imo is his latest one, with the nuns on the cover. Other than that, great track record over the last decade or so. Pride & Glory was great as well. Ozzy ? well, not so much. Seems like he takes what Zakk offers, waters it down to the lowest common denominator, and tries to make it poppy sounding. With Zakk keeping all his good/better ideas for himself, hopefully he'll make some more killer bls albums, instead of wasting what might be good with Ozzy.

I think a while back he was a really talented musician, but he's really seemed to lose what he had. I thought his solo album Book of Shadows was amazing, but that was years ago. He still has a ton of skill on the guitar, but his songwriting is abysmal now. It's so repetitive and phoned in.
He just writes stuff with no meaning or feelling...like it's just a job. "Write 20 songs in a week, knock it out, then go on the road." I think he actually said something exactly like that once.

If hes gonna get rid of zakk he should get Metal Mike that played in Rob Halford's solo band. He fuckin rules and he loves metal like nothing else in his life. he would be perfect for ozzy. and as for ozzy sayin his shit sounded too much like BLS, zakk barely had anything to do withg any writing whatsoever in the past few years. it was all outside writers. so......

Listening to Zakk is always worth a chuckle or two.
He talks like the schoolyard bully, but as a late-30-something man.
Too bad Ozzy's ego would likely prevent him from hiring Dougie Aldrich on guitar. He'd be the best axeslinger since Jake... and, in some ways, could give even J.E.Lee a run.

As we speak, it sounds as though Ozzy's already auditioning guitarists (to replace the Zakkman) behind his back. WTF? No official word, no replies (and I doubt it was even true that Zakk visited Ozzy at all to talk this over). If anything, Zakk's manning up telling the Boss to be a man and not a puppett to $Haron. WHOEVER the guitar player is....it'd be short-lived, that's guaranteed. Jake E. Lee? (you ppl serious?....the guy's doin fine on his own on Shrapnel (if I'm not mistaken)...would he wanna be around backstabbers like Sharon, again. Let's not forget he hated the site of Ozzy back then, and still managed to make two good albums. And Marty Friedman??...the fuck you idiots are on, he's perfectly making good music in Japan, and happy and content at that (listen to his material nowadays). No Zakk Wylde....Ozzy's done. If Ozzy's got some decency left, then make one last album with him. Other than that, Zakk's better off.

I'm confused. So Zakk wants to watch Ozzy fuck his wife? He wants to kick his ass now, that much is clear. Its kind of funny, since Zakk is such a troglodyte at times. I love his playing and his music, but the guy can be such a self-righteous, narrow-minded buffoon. Black Rain sucked ass and sounded like an overproduced, Rob Zombie commercialized piece of shit. I was suprised Zakk had his part in it. However this plays out, I hope Ozzy finished his career with one or two more strong albums. And Zakk, keep it up with BLS.

with the post earlier about trying George Lynch. He can write riffs, solo and knows how to use that pinch harmonic for when he will have to do it every other note during the live set.
Do any of you guys have jobs? If you weren't happy or thought it was time to move on would you quit then look for other work? Or would you look for other work, go on some interviews, weigh the positives and negatives and then decide if you want to leave your job for this new company? That is really all Ozzy is doing in reverse. He has been very loyal to Zakk over the years. He kept Zakk on despite the fact that he can't write for shit anymore and that Ozzy records sound like BLS. Ozzy gave BLS opening slots in Ozzfest every year. Zakk has been riding Ozzy's coat tails for years and the crazy gravy train may be over. It was going to end soon anyways, move on.

I have a feeling you might know where he resides. Also, from the words you're using I think you already know it's over and would rather have the role of being fired so you can blame them (which would be easy to do). I'm all for Ozzy getting another guitarist. Maybe if he tries something fresh, it can ressurect HIS flagging career. Or maybe he'll stick with one-trick-pony Zakk to be "safe" so Zakk can continue to put 83 pinch harmonics in every fucking solo like he always does. Yawn.

It was reported on more than one heavy metal site(including Blabbermouth), that this is what happened. (This is a cut and paste from Blabbermouth July 8th, 2005....so don't hold the spelling errors/typos against me)
when grohl had the probot project going on he had a show in l.a. at either the whiskey or the mint, some smaller club venue anyway. it might've been probots first gig since it was before the video and all that shit. supposedly lemmy was going to make an appearance and possibly even play, but although he was involved in that one hit song of theirs with the video, he wasn't involved on any other tracks and he was in now way part of the touring act, so this gig was special.
well, to no one's surprise, a bunch of bls l.a. and san francisco chapter members came in, as well as zakk who came separatly, i might add, with friends. probot took stage and played five or six tracks and by this time all the bls guys were trashed and pissed since they hadn't seen lemmy yet.
when lemmy's track came up and he wasn't there, grohl hopped up on the mic and tried to get zakk to come up and play. the guitarist was going to move to the bass and play lemmy's part so zakk could basically do whatever the fuck he wanted. the bls fans were totally for it, but zakk just smiled and said no and that was the end of it. they ended up playing the song normally with some tech filling in for lemmy.
but some of the l.a. bls dudes started heckling grohl. they were chanting for lemmy, then for zakk, and when the song started they threw a few bottles up on stage, hitting the tech playing the bass and grohl stopped drumming. mark lanegen from qotsa and the screaming trees had been singing, and when he saw grohl get up he started telling the bls guys to settle the fuck down. grohl was yelling shit at them, but you couldn't hear what he was saying because he didn't have the mic. words were exchanged and grohl threw a drumstick at one of the guys and spit on him, all the meanwhile lanegan is calling the whole ordeal like it's a boxing match. the bassist and the guitarists are playing some weird shit kind of laughing at the whole thing.
zakk eventually comes in from the side. he walks between the stage and the crowd where the bouncers are at and tells the bls guys to cut it out. then he gets up on stage and he's talking with grohl a bit. before you know it grohl is back behind the drums and zakk is strapped in to some gibson just tearing the place apart with a welcome to the jungle cover. all the bls guys are happy and the whole situation is defused until after the show.
some of the bls guys who had been throwing shit at grohl somehow got behind stage insisting that they wanted to apologize to grohl for everything. meanwhile he's hanging out with zakk and by this time lemmy had showed up. some techs are around and the other guys in probot are there, but lanegen had already left. grohl was cool to the guys until one of them spit on him. grohl had been really trashed so he punched one of the dudes. zakk jumped in and pulled grohl aside trying to break it up.
unfortunately grohl tripped over some cables on the floor and he thought zakk was trying to fight. grohl got right up and decked zakk, chipping on of his teeth and sending him down. zakk was like "wtf?" and ready to punch grohl until grohl hit him with a left hook and knocked his ass out cold. then probots own security jumped in and broke the whole thing off.
it was all a misunderstanding and zakk and grohl put it aside, so there was never any real commotion to be made, but yeah, grohl knocked the fuck out of zakk wylde.
heavy metal motherfuckers!

I agree Ozzy is being a dick to the guy...but seriously.....name me anything Zakk has done with Ozzy since No Rest for the Wicked that has had a killer riff or lick you just couldn't get out of your head. There is nothing like the Randy Rhodes...hell, not even anything really as good as Jake E Lee had with Bark at the Moon.
I think it's time for Ozzy to go with someone new and talented. Zakk plays mostly the same recycled riffs and solos over and over now. Maybe if he got off the sauce and stopped talking like a hill billy (he's from New fuckin Jersey) he might write an album like the 1st BLS or even like Book of Shadows....but I'm even tired of his BLS stuff now, never mind that last crappy over produced Ozzy cd.
Either get an established MartyFriedman/George Lynch type....or discover the nest great guitarist like he used to do.
