DAVE LOMBARDO Says There Are 'Rumors' Of A SLAYER/MEGADETH U.S. Tour - Aug. 8, 2009
Bob Suehs of Rock N Roll Experience conducted a short interview with SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo at the Camden, New Jersey stop of this year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival on August 7, 2009. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Rock N Roll Experience: With a lot of the '80s hair bands, you see a situation where they have one or two original members still in the band and the rest are "new" members. If one of the core members of SLAYER were no longer in the band, would the band carry on?

Dave Lombardo: Well, that's really hard to say. Obviously, if it's Tom [Araya, bass/vocals], I think it would be very difficult and maybe the easiest position to fill for them was when I left; they just got another drummer and continued. But I don't see it quite that easy, maybe, with getting another member in SLAYER. I mean, you can't replace TomTom is Tom, the sound of his vocals... and the guitar playing is the same way. You could probably find some guitar player that could mimic what Jeff [Hanneman] plays, or what Kerry [King] plays, but it wouldn't have their soul or their spirit in the way that they play, so you could copy it, but you can't really duplicate their performance.

Rock N Roll Experience: I actually saw the Clash of the Titans tour years ago with SLAYER, ALICE IN CHAINS, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX. Would you ever consider doing a Clash of the Titans reunion tour with the same billing?

Dave Lombardo: Maybe not with that lineup, but there are rumors going around that we might be doing something in the States with [Dave] Mustaine... with MEGADETH.

Rock N Roll Experience: So is the feud totally patched up now? Because there was a feud [between] Kerry and Dave Mustaine.

Dave Lombardo: You know, there was, but I don't really think there's anything going on right now, because we did, like, four shows with MEGADETH up in Canada and Kerry didn't come across Mustaine at all, so I guess everything is OK.

Rock N Roll Experience: So when you left SLAYER, did you get the same satisfaction in your music that you did with SLAYER?

Dave Lombardo: Absolutely! Yeah, I loved doing the stuff with Mike Patton, I loved doing the all the avant-garde music that I did and the jazz stuff, the classical stuff, some of the movies that I did, but that doesn't stop... things are continuing. Right now I am in the process of closing a deal to put some drums down on a skateboard video for Volcom Entertainment, for Geoff Roley; he's like a famous skateboarder, so it's really exciting. There's a movie that I'm gonna do soundtrack stuff for when I get back home... rhythmic, tribal kinda shit.

Rock N Roll Experience: So would you ever do a Dave Lombardo solo record?

Dave Lombardo: Yes. It would be very avant-garde, very left-field, very strange, very weird and it would revolve around drums alone and rhythms and maybe moods and textures, but everything involving drums. I mean, it's in the works — I am working on it — but I don't know when I'm gonna release it... hopefully by 2010. Who knows?

Cool, at least I'm not the only one who is rooting for a return of the mighty Clash Of The Titans. Shit, they ALL have new albums co,ming out, just like back in the day. Its like the planets are in alignment or some shit! Except for Anthrax of course.
shit happens!

Can't wait for the dose of reality "THE KINGS" get when they're only booked into 3-5000 seaters and the vast majority don't sell out.

Must be a shame when you have to open for a 90s hasbeen on a package tour to even see decent crowds.

Arrogant- You're pretty much right. The truth is a Megadeth/Slayer co-headliner doesn't do much better than either band on their own. Probably 5000 tops and that's going to be the exception rather than the rule.

They're touring somewhere else together, too, right? Aside from Canada? It's not going to be "Clash of the Titans," and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a few younger bands, that everyone here is going to bitch about. It's definitely not going to be 80s thrash bands.

Alice in Chains. Megadeth is a shell of their former selves, and Slayer is the same show every night for the last twenty odd years. Anthrax, it would depend on whether or not John Bush returned.

As for Alice, the new singer is awesome live and the one time I saw them with the new guy was FAR better then the three times I saw them with Layne. The only titan left standing out of the classic lineup is AIC.

I was at that shit oh so long ago and it ruled. Fucking ruled I tell you all. Now if it were to be the same line up...Not so much. I still like all of those bands (But I don't give two shits about new Anthrax music) but none of them are what they used to be on their own or collectively. I don't need an attempt at a trip down memory lane when the real thing was so damn good. But have at it for you guys that want to see it.

Dave is the Champ.

My favorite drummer of all time.

I'm a guitarist, and grew-up on a steady diet of Slayer, and naturally love Jeff and Kerry's playing, but man for some reason when I listen to Lombardo-era Slayer, it's the drums that kick my ass more than anything. That's saying a lot!

Never leave Slayer again Dave! Keep doing all the other stuff too, just don't leave Slayer to do it! \m/

(No disrespect to Paul whatsoever, but shit man, there's only one Dave Lombardo!!!)

Dave's playing is the sole thing that keeps me somewhat interested in Slayer. He's always brought so much groove to the band, even during fast parts which is something I can't explain in a rational way. To me he's like the Bill Ward of thrash, and considered I'm a huge fan of BW that's saying a lot!

But, I have my patience that Slayer does small club shows instead of these package shows like Mayhem.

Slayer needs to do longer sets. Let's hope this rumor happens Slayer with Megadeth, and crossing my fingers Anthrax tags along also!!

he prolly kicked RC off not only cause of the satanic beleif but they don't draw fans and $$ like slayer does, Dave's not stupid, he knows potenitial moneymakers when he sees one, and Slayer is a no-brainer to do a tour/festival with. Love Slayer, but i'm kind of getting bored with Lombardo's playing. for my money i like Bostaph and Hoglan

COMMENT | Both are bands are perfectly matched

because both bands can't play for longer than an hour. It's lame. Metallica and AC/DC put on a better and longer show. Megadeth/Slayer is a ripoff.
